Stayed here for three nights at the end of a two week tour of Costa Rica. I'll start with the positives about the resort. The hotel location is beautiful, surrounded by forests and quiet beaches. The rooms are good sized and well designed and have plenty of wardrobe and cupboard space. The bathrooms are good sized and offer all that you might expect from a 5 star hotel. Unfortunately, for us and many of the group that we travelled with the negatives about this hotel outweighed the positives by some way. The hotel runs on the most outdated and unfriendly bureaucratic system. Checking in at breakfast for instance means that there is always a queue of people waiting to be seated. One person checks yours names against a hotel list and then takes you to a table, leaving the queue unattended. The tables are not all available as the hotel tries to fill their prefered areas first instead of allowing people to sit where they wish. Breakfast offers a good variety and is of good standard. Getting more than one coffee capsule each in the rooms per day requires a visit to reception or the concierge desk and then a discussion is required instead of simply supplying the room with adequate supplies on a daily basis. The room at first appeared a very good standard, but on closer inspection revealed that it required a much deeper clean than it had seen for a long time. Dust was sitting on many surfaces and the floor was just swept rather than mopped. This became evident when I stepped on a sliver of glass near the bed whilst in bare feet. The staff were generally friendly although it seemed as though they were acting under management orders to say no to requests in order to save pennies for the hotel. One day our room was not cleaned and at 4:30pm I made the reception aware of this and told them that we were out for the evening and requested that the room be cleaned while we were out. At 10:30pm we returned to find the room had still not been cleaned and my complaint to reception was met with a promise to send a cleaner along to the room now, which was obviously inconvenient and we declined. We ate in two of the restaurants in the hotel, the "sports bar" and the "Asian fusion" . The sports bar had been turned into a buffet, $35 per person, plus tax and service resulted in $98 per couple for poor standard food with very little choice and one beer each. Overpriced, low standard and a clear attempt to get our group out of the restaurant as soon as possible so that could close at 10pm. The Asian fusion was a much nicer experience, better food and service and a much more value for money. In conclusion, the hotel setting is wonderful, but through the bureaucratic management, poor service and low standards of cleaning we would recommend that people choose a different hotel if looking to stay in this area.

Hotel's Favourite
To be clear, we are Marriott people, so we start with a high degree of familiarity and satisfaction with the hotel chain. With that said, this was a first-rate destination for our first trip to Costa Rica. PEOPLE: The staff is very professional and downright friendly. We had more good "chats" with staff who were knowledgeable and seemed eager to teach and showcase their beloved Costa Rica, it made the stay all that more enjoyable. Cristian at the pool explained the green coconuts are eaten differently and called "pipas." Maria showed us where the biggest iguana on the property lives (he's 3 feet long!) and explained that the critters are indigenous, plentiful, and beloved features of the property -- the biggest ones get names. Yolanda explained that the delicious hot sauce we kept getting with our breakfast eggs was a local specialty and a house recipe. AMENITIES: We took advantage of some of the amenities, including free use of mountain bikes to explore the property. On one day we took a free guided bike tour and saw howler monkeys, deer, and a huge blue crab hilariously trying to hide from us by tucking itself under the parked wheel of one bike. We also got massages in the spa and they were some of the best we've ever experienced. SERVICE: Pool service is good, as is restaurant food. The quality of the service is excellent -- several of the staff said they love working there and love engaging guests. So don't be afraid to strike up a conversation. COVID TESTING: You will be required to produce a negative COVID finding from a proctored (witnessed) COVID test administered no more than 24 hours prior to your return flight's departure. Marriott provides these, and their team comes to your room to administer them. They are $65 apiece, but well worth it. WILDLIFE: Critters are everywhere. We were in a suite with a plunge pool, which attracted all sorts of little guys -- lots of insects, crabs and geckos that would come to eat them, an *enormous* flying water bug that we learned is nicknamed a "toe biter" that we did not enjoy seeing, and iguanas, who seem to frequent it in the middle of the night and poop on the deck! BEACH: The immediate beach is ... okay. The sand quickly gives way to a rocky shore, but there is't much in the way of life in the tide pools at low tide. If you walk south (left from hotel) down the beach, just past a bluff you will find a beautiful beach, deep with shallow water, that goes on for miles. It's not visible from the hotel and therefore easy to miss. Don't miss it! Decent shell collecting and crab watching. GETTING THERE: Getting to Guanacoste was a bit of a pain -- it's a 5-hour drive from San José, so if you can fly into Liberia, do so. We didn't and sorta regretted it, because the drive there was harrowing. We got in midday and after clearing customs, renting a car (watch for the dirty trick there -- stories of attempted swindles were all around us, and we have our own), we hit the road just in time for the afternoon (torrential) rains to start. Between that, the local driving customs, and impending darkness at the other end of the trip, we were stressed out and exhausted when we came dragging in at around 7 pm, well past the 6 pm sunset. They drive on the right side of the road there, which is good, but the standard speed limits are lower (max of 80 kph, which is about 48 mph), and the road is shared with cars, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and the occasional domesticated animal. Motorists pass in harrowing acts that we would never do in the US -- but it works, even though it takes much adjusting. Be patient and vigilant behind the wheel. Gas is expensive. The last mile of road before you hit Marriott property is a bone-jarring mile and a half of dirt road that is in such terrible shape you can't just say it's a washboard road with big potholes. It can take 10-15 minutes to drive that mile and a half. We learned that the Marriott and local governments each contend that the other is accountable for this road maintenance, so neither tends it. As a result, tour drivers refer to the "car massage" one gets with every crossing of this stretch of road. NEARBY: The JW is outside of the beach town of Tamarindo, which is a 15-30 minute drive from the property, depending on the condition of that dirt road. It's a cute beach town, but a little junky and kitschy to some people's tastes. It does have a beautiful beach, with lots of waterfront establishments ideal for watching sunsets, and lots of great souvenir shopping. Along with the standard gifts for our kids, we got ourselves a beautiful mango wood bowl for a very reasonable price. This is a great property!

My wife and I booked a trip to Europe in March of 2020. Everything cancelled except our down payment. We decided to use the DP on a tropical vacation when Chicago is miserable! Through the tour group our choices were Panama or Costa Rica. We chose CR! We normally would stay at an inexpensive hotel but with the credit we decided on the incredible JW Marriott. From the second we arrived we were treated like royalty by the friendliest people we have ever encountered. Not once did we ever hear a negative word OR saw a negative reaction on any employee's face. There were certain people that made our stay perfect. Gabriel checked us in and out and was extremely helpful. Michelle, Greddy and Astrid in the Concierge office were absolutely the most knowledgeable and helpful people my wife and I ever met. They are patient, sincere and the kindness group you could ever know and talk to. We walked into their office at least once a day and each time we were greeted with big smiles and a sincere willingness to help us. The Resort was very impressive but the people there is the true reason we had a wonderful experience.

Enjoyed our stay at the JW Marriott! The rooms are large with plenty of amnesties—water, tea, toiletries. The pool is beautiful and you never have to scramble for a seat. I believe they are doing construction on a restaurant so places to eat were fairly limited and costly as you would expect. The pool service is easily distracted. However, there are plenty of wonderful servers—Neigel, towel service always greets you w/a smile; Jose was wonderful as well and Kevin, who made a point to remember our name! Edgar made the best mojitos!! You can book a shuttle into town easily so car is not necessary. We did one tour-boat cruise, which is a bird lovers dream. I was excited to see the monkeys. As I said, food options are pretty limited as you are secluded out here. The raw beauty of the ocean and surroundings makes it well worth it!

We had a wonderful first trip to Costa Rica, thanks to JW Marriott! The resort is beautiful with a huge meandering infinity pool. We loved how it provides some activities: Yoga, Bike Tour, Latin Dance, Cooking & Mixology classes. While we enjoyed greatly the 9 am Yoga class, being held on the beach, the best spot ever—ocean before you, forest next to you— & a lovely instructor, Adriana, we do wish it’s held earlier, perhaps at 7 or 8 am. The Bike Tour at 10:30 am was really tough, riding on gravel road up & down at times and under scorching hot sun! Definitely should have it in the morning! Few restaurants were opened while we were there but the food were good & reasonably priced. We preferred Tamarine Restaurant simply because it has more choices compared to Sabanero. Azul Pool Cafe is great with beautiful views & delicious food! We loved the breakfast too, lots of fruits & nice local cuisine. We tried the spa once, it was good. The sunset is gorgeous—watching the sun goes down is our favorite evening activity! From Mansita Beach, you can walk to the left & have lunch at Lola’s Beach Bar, amazing place—love the vibe, the wood furniture, the trees & the food! Or you can walk to the right & see some nice boulders. We took an excursion tour & tried zip-lining, water-sliding, mud-bathing & horseback riding. Exhilarating experiences! So cool! We also took a shuttle to Tamarindo Beach Town. We walked the beach, shopped a little, had a great massage but a terrible lunch with the most overdone lobster! 😅 Overall, it was a 5-stars resort! Love Costa Rica!

This is an amazing resort. It was so beautiful and relaxing. The staff were some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered. We took part in some resort activities like cooking, mixology, evening bonfire marshmallow roasts. We loved it all! I want to especially mention the yoga teacher Adrianna, she was so good at welcoming everyone and making the class accessible to all the participants. I’ve been doing yoga for a long time with many different leaders and she is at the top of the list. She has a very shiny spirit. 👍

We stayed six nights at this hotel. They upgraded us to a beautiful corner ocean - front suite. I highly recommend the yoga classes. Adriana is so joyful and made yoga very calming and centering. The howler monkeys were up in the trees this morning during our yoga session! The spa is also beautiful. We had a great massage and relax time. It’s the end of the low season so the restaurant hours were a bit odd. The resort was only 20% occupancy which has its pros and cons. Service was friendly but on Tico time (slow). The staff went out of their way to serve us though. The staff are so friendly! Food was good and reasonably priced for a resort. Servings were huge. We purchased the rate with breakfast included which was a great option. Breakfast buffet is $30 per person. The beach is very safe and walkable since the whole area is within a gated community. The beach in front is rocky but to the left there’s a great beach. Water is so warm! We saw and heard lots of birds and monkeys. Keep in mind that this resort is 30 minutes from the closest town, Tamarindo. A short part of the drive in is a bumpy dirt road. The hotel grounds are beautiful and clean. We left the resort two days and stayed the other days. Long Beach walks, relaxing by the pool, working out in the well-equipped gym. There are daily activities like yoga, nature walk, Latin dance, etc. We went on two tours. Both booked through TAM tours on site. One was Jacaranda Boat tours in Palo Verde National Park - that was great. The other was Marlin Del Rey catamaran sunset and snorkel tour. It was just ok. No fish, and bad visibility. We did enjoy the people, food, drinks and sunset. Overall I recommend this resort!
