Beautiful hostel right of the river with fantastic views! Very helpful staff, especially Andy, who is always on hand to provide great advice and tips on where to go! Will also help organise trips around the island, I recommend the day kayaking trip! Also has a great restaurant with delicious Asian and western food!
I had an excellent experience and stay at CrazyGecko. Andy (the owner) is a great guy, very friendly and he makes you feel like home. The family that runs the place together with Andy is very nice. My bungalow was super big and clean, had a very nice decoration and style. I also had Huge balcony with hammocks to chill and wit beautiful river view. Another highlight was the restaurant, the food was delicious. I recommend it 100%
We haggled half price off the original quoted, but still 100,000 for the water front bungalows, I now gather this could have been cheaper. The room was really lovely though, more hotelesque than backpacker unlike most on the island with a lovely enclosed bathroom. Thank you. The windows onto the river front make the rooms brighter than most bungalows with great views. However this did mean the room got particularly hot and it was impossible to be inside during the daytime past 8am (fan only). This may be better in the cooler seasons. To be fair, there is no sleeping in anyway as the locals are up early, which is fair enough, but the boat starting up underneath our bungalow before 8 every day was a bit annoying. The mosquito net does not fit around the bed in our room either and there were uninvited colonies of ants that found us delicious. You have to expect nature here and the beds are very spacious, that was just the downside, maybe it can be changed? The balcony was nice, room well appointed and the Laos host great. The restaurant sold reasonably priced food that was delicious. The young girls cooked and took our order daily and did a great job. I felt a bit sorry for them being alone to do this, especially when the restaurant was busier. Understandably it is a different culture to Europe, but I was surprised by their solo responsibility for a professionally run place, I hope they are well rewarded. Overall I would recommend highly. You pay for what you get and this is a pretty, well appointed accommodation in Don Det. …
We had a great few days in a funky family room. We loved our time there - the room was very clean and comfortable, we enjoyed the hammocks on our gorgeous balcony and Andy was able to help with everything. The restaurant does delicious food as well - we'd highly recommend staying here!
Great location! If you have the choice: take one of the new and lovely bungalows at the riverside. They are completely new and very good equiped. And its just amazing to lay in the hammock and look over the mekong. Andy and Rahel are great hosts and they have many good ideas what to do while staying in paradise. Don‘t miss the sunset cruise they are offering - it‘s gorgeous.
We highly recommend this place! It is quiet and the rooms are wonderful, we had a riverfront bungaloo. Andy could help us with almost everything and they all are really friendly! Their food is also really tasty and fresh. Try it out! :-)
I ate there twice because it was near my guesthouse and it’s usually a good sign to see many people eating there. They have an extensive menu with Asian and Western dishes for affordable prices. I tried the spring rolls first, the vegetable fried rice the second time. The spring rolls were very good, I liked them yet in the dipping sauce there were small mosquitos bugs ( I know it might look like pepper, it was not ). There is nothing wrong in giving the same bowl of sauce without throwing them away, but it would be better to store them or cover them. The fried rice had nothing exceptional but was still good.
We didn’t stay at this hostel but had lunch here and it was amazing! So cheap but so tasty and delicious! I had the lentil and pumpkin curry with beef and sticky rice, which was so good and I would definitely recommend it!
Things you need to know: - Painstaking reservation process. I sent an email on the website and got a respond, a day later, from “Andy” saying he was out of town and I needed to call the location “Crazy Gecko “ directly. I responded back to “Andy” and it took several days before I heard back again. After 4 attempts of calling the property directly via international number, I managed to get someone on the phone and take in my reservation. You cannot book online! - There is NOTHING peaceful about this place. Do NOT expect to sleep in later than 7:30 - 8:00am...there surrounding locals and especially children are extremely loud! Screaming, crying and wailing is a full time occupation for them. Bring earplugs AND noise canceling headphones. Same thing during the day, the sounds of hammers and construction going around the bungalows is constant and literally obnoxious to no end. So much for hammocks & nice views, you can’t even enjoy them with a bit of peace. - There is no hot water for showers. I’ve had “warm” water only once during my 4 days at this location. - Rodents’ droppings in the room and bathroom. You can also hear them at night. - The café/bar/lounging area advertises “good music, good drinks”. Didn’t hear music once and staff is more occupied with their daily routine outside of Crazy Gecko than actually looking after the guests. Every time you go to order something, they run from their house to the counter to attend to your needs. Sometimes, they even send the kids to take in your order. Most of the staff struggle with English, communication isn’t easy at all. At some point, I didn’t bother anymore and just went to hang out in the busier part of town. -WiFi signal is very weak, almost non-existent in the rooms/bungalows. If this was my business there would be changes happening “tout de suite”. This place has huge potential but is just badly run. You don’t feel like you’re a guest in the establishment, you feel like you’re a nuisance! I realize this review is harsh, but it is proportional to the level of annoyance and dissatisfaction experienced during my stay and people need to know what they are signing up for. Don Det (and 4,000 Islands) truly is a gem. Will I be back in the future years? Absolutely! Will I stay at Crazy Gecko? Most certainly not! The 80,000 kip / night did not warrant all those inconveniences. Do your due diligence and compare with other guesthouses, you will find much better value for your money.…
We ended up having dinner in Crazy Gecko each of the four nights we stayed in Don Det given the great food and good service we experienced there each time. The owner and his staff are all hospitable, and quick to offer menus, take your order and check in on you mid-meal to ensure everything is OK (but not in an annoying, overbearing way). Menu offers a good selection of local and western dishes at reasonable prices. We had breakfast and lunch in many other places on the island during our stay but this place was hands down our favourite place to eat.
