Located in the tourist hotspot of the island, Ban Dondet within walking distance to the boat pier. Lots of restarants and bars are easy to reach.
The location (and island) is peaceful and quiet at night, nothing around you but the sound of the jungle.
Baba was very welcoming and helpful. No problem to get a kettle for your room if you need. Rooms are nice, balcony with river view and all you need.
No breakfast but there are many options around.

This is one of those reviews I was not going to write as from a selfish view I would hate for it to be full the next time I want to visit, however Basil the owner of this brilliant hotel deserves every booking. So the hotel, it’s perfectly located seconds from the restaurants, it sits on the footpath that meanders across the island and is next to the river, we had amazing views of this from our balcony. The room was spacious and had everything we needed except a safe. The hotel is clean modern and very well maintained. If and when we return to the island we would definitely book here.

Very good and nice guesthouse just outside the crowded center of Don Det. Spacious and clean rooms with nice furniture, great bathroom en kingsize beds, although a bit hard - fot those who love it. Otherwise you simply mention it and staff will try to solve your problem. The riverview, of course, is outstanding.

Decent choice for Don Det but on retrospect I would have paid a little extra to stay in one of the other hotel-style accommodations on the island. Good points were the view of the river, the effective aircon, decent wifi, the cleanish room and having your own balcony. Downsides are the rock hard mattress (and just two thin pillows on a massive bed) and the balcony furniture being two hard wooden chairs. I really craved somewhere to lounge / relax in comfort when staying staying here. A couple of big cushions would make all the difference! Nowhere to refill water bottles at the accommodation itself (they provided a large bottle of water each day, but I try not to use extra plastic if I can avoid it), but the restaurants and bars opposite allow refills for a small fee.

To all fellow travellers (particularly women travelling solo), please take the time to read the following review and to view the attached photographs:

I booked 2 nights at the Baba Guesthouse (1/12/16 - 3/12/16) and on the morning of the second day while checking my online banking I realised that the property had charged my card twice, once in full at the time of booking and again in full at the time of check in which was pending.

I approached the owner and showed him my bank statement and asked that he checked his records and cancel the pending payment. He seemed most upset saying 'this has never happened before' - I gave him some time to investigate and I went back to my room.

After around 10-15 minutes I went to the reception again - in a very aggressive manner he told me that he only had 1 payment from me and that I was wrong. I tried to explain that this was because the second payment was still pending and would likely clear later that day.

He just repeated 'you are wrong' - I tried to show him my bank statement again to help difuse the situation but he grabed my wrist and tried to pull the phone out of my hand. My first instinct was to pull away and protect my phone, he took a swipe at me and then pushed me to the ground!

As you can imagine I was terrified, I was in tears, in shock at his appauling reaction which was not provoked in any way. It was a woman who was either his wife or a worker at the guesthouse who shouted at him to stop and pulled him away.

I was distaught and went out on the dirt path to try and get someone's help, it was then that I realised that my knee was already bruising and I had quite clear grab marks on my wrist - one of which was bleeding! I showed him what he had done to me, no apology, he just stared at me.

Fortunately a young man approached me, he could see how upset I was and asked if I needed any help. He stayed outside my room the whole time while I packed my bag, it was too unsafe for me to stay. I'm a single woman who is travelling on my own and quite frankly was traumatized and very upset.

As we left the young man handed the owner the key for my room and told him that what he had done was wrong and bad for buisness, to which the owner just laughed at the two of us.

After I left the owner decided to report me as a 'no show' to booking.com which is obviously a complete lie and likely some weak attempt to cover his tracks.

Since the assult I have been in contact with booking.com and the embassy in Lao to take matters further - he can't get away with such disgusting behaviour!

All I would ask is that people think twice before booking at Baba Guesthouse. It does have a lot of good reviews but take the time to read the owners response to the negative comments.

To be perfectly honest, Ban Dondét is a beautiful island and there are plenty of other guesthouses offering perfectly good accommodation at half the price and without the violence!

Thank you for taking the time to read this review - I would appreciate your support

Response from BabaLaos, Gérant at BABA Guesthouse
Responded 21 Dec 2016
Dear readers, please be careful and very skeptical with this review. First of all, be assured that the facts have been transformated and the opportunist pictures definitely added to deceive. Not only these worrying images have absolutely no link with our property, but even their relation with the guest's experience here must be proven. Those injuries exhibited in photos may come from any accident or collision during a travel, a bicycle fall for example or a collision during a kayaking tour. It seems very likely that the review has been edited to inspire fear, to dissuade travellers to book with us and to damage our reputation. The article 87 of the Penal Law in Laos severely punishes such kind of practice, and this writer probably faces a big deal by stating she was assulted by the owner, who is actually a woman, not a man. We are professional, friendly and ready to help, unfortunately, there had actually been a few sparks between this person and one of our employees, due to communication problems. This happens, nevertheless we have to be very CLEAR on two things : first, the reasons of such a contention, and then the verifiable facts of the story. The guest was the first aggressive and anxious person, spreading her nervousness in the reception, because she believed she had been charged twice. No mistake has never been done by us in the accountancy of this guest at any time, and from the beginning her claim is just inadmissible. We scrupulously archieve all the papers and bills of our clients, we check all the transactions very carefully to end up at this incontestable conclusion that the guest paid the normal price in a single transaction. Our bank is categorical, and be sure that if there had been a problem really, we would have been quickly noticed and imperatively requested to provide adequate justifications. But since the money was normally taken from the reservation, no refund could logically be granted to this buyer. Our refusal deceived the guest so much that she savagely put her mobile phone in the face of our employee, who spontaneously reacted by sweeping her arm with his hand, in order to get rid of it. Since the traveler's review talks about a "reaction which was not provoked in any way", it seems necessary to precize the origin of the sparks, since the offensive gesture came from her, first, and not from him. Laos is a country where honor is important and respected, and the head is a part of the body which is not recommanded to approach. Sadly, this unwise person learnt this lesson to her detriment. Whatever the intensity of her contrariety, whatever the strength of her emotions, there is absolutely no reason to create a fiction by fantasizing physical hurts. This person has not been pushed, nor hit, nor assulted, we don't know where this bruise comes from, and there was obviously no blood in her wrist when she left the reception. There were a few witnesses during the event, among them the owner of the guesthouse and the neighbours, and since Lao people are very honest and reliable, be sure all of them would be very happy to help providing the truth concerning this case. It's probably not necessary to be a doctor to diagnose this solo traveler hysterical, perhaps also depressed with a certain tendency towards victimization. We respect all opinions and would accept any bad review as long as the content is verifiable. Unfortunately, this is not the case here, so we strongly recommend you to stay extremely vigilant and suspicious, and above all to cross these reviews with those from other websites like Booking, Agoda or Airbnb. For direct support, contact us through our personal website dondet.net Thank you.

The main road on Don Det as soon as you get off the boat at the harbour is not the best first impression of the island, however things got better very quickly as we walked along the sunrise side of the island. Both of us commented how nice one of the guesthouses up ahead looked compared to many of the other we had walked passed, when we reached it luckily for us it was in fact BABA’s!

BABA’s was a gem of a place to stay. It was very clean and tidy. The room was big plus we had a great view from our balcony of the Mekong river. The owner is really friendly and helpful and I would definitely recommend staying here.

The hotel is a few min. from the boat landing on Don Det. The room was relatively large, but apart from a small stand, it had no closet or any place to store our belongings. There was a large fan (no air-conditioning) & mosquito net. Breakfast was not included. I found it unusual that we were required to pay for our entire stay (3 nights) in advance.

While visiting neighbor island Don Khone, we found a much better room, with air-con, in a much better location (c.f. Sengahloune Villa), and the price was exactly the same as what we were paying here. We informed the manager (owner?) of Baba Guesthouse that we would leave after only 2 days and he became aggressive and unprofessional. In 20+ years of travel, I have never encountered such unprofessional behavior from a hotel manager. Only after lengthy, unpleasant bargaining did he agree to my suggestion of refunding us half of the money for the unused night.

In the end, the room itself was ok, and it did have a nice view of the river (if you overlook the constant stream of tourists walking by), but it wasn’t good value. Finally, given the manager, I can’t recommend this hotel at all.

We enjoyed Don Det a lot, but we liked Don Khone even more, perhaps somewhat due to our ages (43 & 47). Don Det is definitely more of a backpackers’ place and simply has more visitors than Don Khone, which is a bit quieter and, for us, even more relaxed. In any case, the 4000 Islands are definitely worth visiting.

Response from BabaLaos, Gérant at BABA Guesthouse
Responded 20 Dec 2016
Dear traveller, if you want to book 3 nights here, then you need to pay 3 nights in advance. This is basically the principle of a standard "reservation". Kind of guaranty, and as soon as the night is charged, then the room is exclusively guaranted to you. As reliable professionnals, we never cancel any reservation already granted to a particular customer, even if another traveller makes an attractive request with a better offer. Of course, anyone is free to move, but if you pay 3 nights in advance at the Baba guesthouse, then it is like a contract you sign with us. Sabotaging this contract which includes the acceptance of our policies is not only dishonest, but also a wrong practice that we can't support. And that's why the refund could not have been accepted, unfortunately. Due to the disappointment not to be reimbursed, you started to follow the employee of our guesthouse in every step where he moved, like a jellyfish or a leech. Our staff is calm, patient and comprehensive, but after 30 minutes of exhausting insistance, your oppressive behaviour certainly ended up embarrassing him in the restaurant where other guests had their breakfasts. The decision to grant you a small amount of money came from him and his free will, though, please don't consider this exception as a normal due. Your review also makes the promotion of our competitor, the Sengahloune Villa in Don Khone. We won't say anything bad about these friendly neighbours. However, we would like to inform you that your writing certainly contravene the Tripadvisor guidelines, which explicitely exclude any commercial for other properties in the specifical content of each review. If you want to say good things about the Sengahloune Villa, feel free to visit their own page, but be aware that the Baba guesthouse is definitely not the proper place to advertise distant hotels. Here, we always improve and work efficiently to make the place better. For your information, we installed the air-conditionning in all our rooms since November 2015, private refrigerators and new furnitures since 2016. Concerning Don Det compared to Don Khone, these two islands are more or less similar with equally all kind of travellers on both sites. After the electricity connected the houses in 2010, the comfort of the accommodations increased everywhere, and the various profiles of the numerous travellers have logically evolved too. For more information about the 4000 islands, visit dondet.net.

We stayed at Baba's Guesthouse for 3 nights. It is a new guesthouse and we could definitely see that. It is a really nice place to relax. For us it was the perfect relaxing end to a two-week trip through Laos. The rooms are clean, tidy and decorated with a huge mosquito net. There is free and good wifi in the rooms. The service is good, very friendly staff. It is located close to the pier and has a nice view on the river. I would definitely recommend this guesthouse!

Really nice guesthouse,it's all new, rooms and bathrooms are very big and clean. There is a small balcony with every room which has rives view so it's really nice to relaxing. We were planning to stay only for 1night before moving to the other island but we liked it too much so we stayed another extra 2 days.

There are a lot of accommodation choices on Don Det, most of which are very basic rooms or bungalows overlooking the river (some with a fan). If you want a really large clean and comfortable room with an AC option, then a few extra pounds is probably worth it at BABA guesthouse. Beautiful garden, your own personal balcony and a very pretty terrace over the river. A short walk to lots of restaurants and bars, but nice and quiet in the evening. We loved it

Hi, Not having aircon was not a problem during the end of December, but I guess it depends on the time of year. We were not disturbed at night at all. I'm not sure where the so called party area was, but we did't see or hear of it at all, even if Baba is situated fairly far north on Don Det. Best regards Malin
