Detailed Reviews
We chose The Sailors Rest because of its location to the centre of the village and its waterside location.
The communal entrance area is clean and tidy, as is the room.
The room has a small quiet fridge, coffee making facilities and a good TV. We found the WiFi a bit hit and miss, but seems to connect overnight.
The room is small, but big enough for two.
If you need one, bring a shaver adapter - we got caught out as there is not one in the bathroom or anywhere in the room.
When we arrived the room was unexpectedly cold, though the corridor thermostat (which in some cases controls more than one room) seemed t show the heating was on and warm enough. You have to read the welcome booklet to know that the radiators may all be set to off and you need to turn them on. I’m more used to rooms being ready for occupation, so it wasn’t something I anticipated. Reading through the booklet, it does suggest this may be the case though.
The location is very good for nearby cafes and restaurants, for the shops, great views across the bay, and close to the largest car park in the village too and pleasantly close to the Hockings ice cream van :)

This place is just perfect. We stayed in Room 2 which has a sea view, it's well equipped with a decent coffee machine and a fridge. I liked that there was a fresh jug of water in the fridge along with fresh milk. The bed was incredibly comfortable and it's decorated to a high standard. It just has a great feel about it. We will definitely be staying there again.

A gem at a budget price! We got the last room available advertised as NO VIEW. Well, while my husband is out running, I have a gt Sat on the bathroom window ledge admiring a gorgeous view. Chilled the drink in the handy bedroom Room fridge. The place is spotless, beautifully decorated. Excited to go to the parent-hotel The Royal George for dinner soon…£140 including breakfast in late July on a Saturday night is very good value.

So we were invited to a friends wedding, the reception being at the Royal George Appledore. Checking around for accommodation and I found the sailors and booked it.
Before arriving you get a code for the front door and for the key safe to get your keys. On arrival we parked in the car park up the road (On street parking is hit and miss). Our room was room 5 with an amazing view over the quayside.
The room was spotlessly clean and had all the essentials.
However the windows rattle in the frame, if you need them leaving open, and the shutters don't, we used a hair bobble to keep them closed. The room was on a slight tilt and you could feel this laid on the bed. The bed was 2 Single divans pushed together, not a major issue to make a double.
However the pillows were very thin and I had to fold them over to try and get comfortable.
Also if you book breakfast, be prepared for a stroll as this is served in the Royal George a 5-10 min walk away depending on your legs. So I think an addition to the room could be an umbrella as on our second morning we got caught short.
Overall for what it was it didn't detract from our stay, and I would recommend to anyone staying in Appledore to give it a try.

We booked a 'Superior King En-Suite Room' (Room 5) what we got was not superior in any way, not spacious and poorly furnished. There was a built in wardrobe that you couldn't fully open the door of or it hit a bedside table; there was only one bedside table and reading light because there wasn't room for one the other side of the bed, no meaningful storage or drawers for clothes - there was one shallow drawer I would describe as a sock drawer. We ended up leaving our clothes in our suitcase and holdall.
In a superior king' room I would expect a couple of chairs to sit down - wrong. On the website there were two photographs, one of a spacious room we expected with chairs, another of a bed in a really tight space but cleverly it did not show you the rest of the room - or lack of. Even the bit of space where all the plug sockets are on the wall didn't exist as that's where the table with the coffee machine was.
The bathroom was small but adequate and we could live with that; however a sliding bathroom door due to the lack of space doesn't allow you much privacy.
We were also both concerned at the fact there was no fire exit anywhere in the building and it has rooms on 3 upper floors. One way in, one way out! All fire protection equipment and procedures were in place and would be fully compliant, but we felt uneasy.
You don't interact with anybody, you get a code to get in and there is no reception or staff on site which we knew, but didn't particularly like. It maybe helpful if, when you walk to the hotel for breakfast the staff there showed any interest and asked if everything was OK.
That's the worst over. On the plus side location is great, the refurbished building is generally to a good standard. I enjoyed the walk to the hotel for breakfast although my wife wasn't so keen and we got wet one day.
I always leave positive reviews where warranted but I'm afraid this is how we felt, which was very disappointing.

Have stayed at the Sailors rest twice now, the most recent last weekend. Can’t fault the place. Lovely rooms overlooking the water with carefully chosen decor and no two rooms the same. Lovely bathroom with rainfall shower and tea and coffee facilities with a mini fridge in every room.
Best of all rooms are dog friendly making them perfect for a get away in North Devon with lots of dog walks and good food.
Breakfast is a short stroll down the road at The Royal George where you are made to feel most welcome and we have never had a bad meal there. Can sit for hours watching the estuary traffic taking it all in (dog friendly again).
Can’t wait to return!

Upon entering the front door, open the door Infront of you, then on your right the key safe boxes are on the right wall to your immediate right.
If you are looking for the milk in the room, it's in the fridge.
Stayed in room 5, not a lot of room if the beds are set to twin. Nice view.e

Stayed here recently. Lovely clean room with everything you need and a nice big comfy bed. Ideal for Appledore Quay, and shops. Breakfast is provided by The Royal George Hotel only a few minutes walk away. Breakfast was delicious and the service was superb.
As a added bonus all the bedrooms and doggie friendly. Overall spend two wonderful nights here- well happy.

Wonderful 3 night stay with my dog at The Sailors Rest. Exceptionally clean and comfortable room with a lovely view. Room facilities were to a high standard ie wonderful shower and very comfy bed and nice quality bedding. There is also a good size fridge in the room I had. (Rm 2) I had to keep the window shut as my dog took exception to some of the noises outside which meant the room got quite hot but there are 2 fans thoughtfully provided in the cupboard.
Some noise one night from the apartment above as the guests moved about but once they settled it was fine.
Breakfast over at The Royal George was amazing and great value.
Highly recommended and I hope to return again sometime.

We booked our room a bit late so ended up in the attic type room but it was fantastic. Full of character, beautiful views from our spacious bathroom out into the estuary. We sat on the windowsill and chair to admire the view with a cup of tea. Nice touch having fresh milk in the fridge to go with our hot drinks and a bottle of water.
The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of room around the bed bearing in mind we were in an attic. Beautiful beams to add character too.
Plenty of hanging space and drawers too.
The bathroom was immaculate with a fantastic shower.
We will definitely be coming back.
Thank you.
