The Dragon Hotel, often celebrated for its historical charm and cleanliness, particularly in the bathrooms, falls short for many guests in terms of value and modern comforts. While the service is generally recognized for attentiveness, some visitors have encountered inconsistent and unprofessional interactions. The rooms, despite being clean, are criticized for being outdated, noisy, and in need of maintenance.
Additionally, the atmosphere's character is marred by noise issues and a need for updating. Despite its aesthetic appeal, reviewers suggest that the hotel's amenities and dining experiences do not justify the pricing.

Detailed Reviews
The Dragon is situated in a delightful town which is worth a visit for itself. Now, the hotel: rooms are difficult to access as all are up steep stairs and there are no lifts as the building cannot (?) accommodate them. This is a nightmare for all but the fittest, particularly when you are also toting luggage. There are no ground floor rooms so the hotel is entirely unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues - anyone with even mild walking difficulties would have a problem. My room- a double - had a high unreachable window (used a coat hanger to open it!) and the furniture was ill-assorted and mis-matched. There was some old ‘brown’ furniture, scuffed and stained, no wardrobe just an odd hall-stand affair with a few wooden hangers but no skirt/trouser hangers. All very odd and not nice. The room was clean but drab .
The bathroom looked like it had been refurbished nicely. Hah, despite appearances, the shower experience was dismal as the water pressure is woeful. Apparently the hotel literature mentions this as if to excuse it! This is the C21st guys- there are remedies! The toiletries provided are a dual purpose shampoo/body wash (not acceptable for women) and conditioner in the shower and liquid hand soap at the basin. All good quality and smell delicious - but don’t make up for the other shortcomings. And no shower cap despite being shower-only, and no body lotion.
The evening food offering has been streamlined (dumbed down I’d say) since my last visit to easy, predictable choices whereas there was a much more imaginative menu previously- disappointing - and I wouldn’t want to be staying more than one night as I’d be pushed for choice. Breakfast choice was very good however and service throughout by the young staff was excellent.
The hotel has changed hands and prices hiked with no justification by way of improvements. The pool has been closed, despite the fact there’s still a photo of it on the website and its billing on the hotel’s external sign. There are lots of hotels in old and historic buildings that have modern amenities - the Dragon needs to drag itself into the C21st!

What a warm and professional welcome we had from the team at the Dragon.
We were travelling on a short break with elderly parents so I had some questions and concerns before and during the visit that were all addressed promptly and courteously. From the reception team to the restaurant and bar staff, everyone was so very friendly and helpful. We got the impression of a well trained team who enjoy working in this characterful hotel and also enjoy working well together.
The hotel itself is very interesting and its location in this historic town is perfect, right at the centre above the quiet square.
We had fabulous food there on our first night. Great menu choices although would have liked to have seen more light fish and chicken options and GF choices.
In terms of decor, well done for the fantastic array of beautiful photos of local scenes from the locality throughout the hotel. They portray a real 'sense of place' of this wonderful area - so much more inspiring for us visitors rather than random artwork.
Downstairs was lovely, tastefully fitted out and freshly painted.
Our rooms were generous sizes (deluxe suite overlooking the square and premier room over the courtyard) and comfortable, with lovely colourful cushions and bedspreads. Rooms were quiet (we visited on a Monday and Tuesday).
The paintwork was a little faded in the bedrooms, which kind of fitted with the historical setting but if I'm honest, it could have done with a fresh coat of white paint in the Premier room to brighten everything up. A maintenance visit to sort the odd bulb out in bedside lamp, wobbly shower tap, hard to turn off tap (premier room) wouldn't go amiss.
All in all though, this stay was.memorable for the right reasons - the care we had from the staff, the historic building and the fascinating history of Montgomery itself.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
The town itself is a bit of a timewarp and a bit sad - lots of closed shops. Hotel itself was part of that experience. Nothing really wrong, just very dated in how they did things. I was only in a single room but the furniture and fittings were all very retro. Best bit was the cleanliness - bathroom in particular, I have never seen the chrome elements so shiny and glass around shower so clean anywhere, Savoy included! Dinner was also a retro experience, the way the waiters functioned, the menu, the wait for a glass of wine that only arrived after I had finished both starter and main. Really difficult to know how to rate but on the basis that I wouldn't go back if I was wanting a room in the area, then I have plumped for 3 star...

We called at lunchtime and were showed to a table in the bar. Staff were very nice and efficient, there were quite a few full tables. The furniture is the mis matched old furniture that most places use these days, however, the chair covers were grubby and badly stained, the table was very sticky, ( we have noticed this in a number of places in the locality and assume that it is the spray cleaner used). Although the table had been wiped down, we noticed old food between the boards which was quite off putting. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad which comprised of bagged salad leaves, small pieces of chicken, hard boiled egg, too much dressing for my liking but the “croutons”were actually a piece of fried sliced bread cut into strips! Again, the chicken goujon salad had too much dressing. The chips were ok. The outside looked like it needed painting and repairing. We walked passed the Bistro on the way to the bar, this was closed but had tablecloths and looked much more presentable, but if the food is from the same kitchen then wouldn’t recommend.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review with us. We are very sorry to learn that the standard of your food during your visit did not meet your expectations, for which we apologise. Whilst some of our kitchen team may be new apprentices or still under training, there are on occasion small mistakes made which is to be expected whilst someone is learning, however we do endeavour to make sure this does not impact our overall standard of food. We would like to extend our sincere apologies that on this instance this was not the case. If you would like to discuss the matter further, please feel free to call us on 01686 668359 and ask for Jo.

What a shame!! beautiful village, stunning location. cosy looking hotel.
Food was lovely, really delicious evening meal. breakfast, not so much
Rooms awful. paper thin walls, very very badly needs updating. bathroom was dreadful. Staff all ok but no real customer service, they all looked really grumpy, they were pleasant enough but got the feeling they'd rather not be there and guests were a necessary annoyance. No extra pillows, mattress uncomfortable. we both had trouble sleeping as we had no option than to listen to the guests staying in the adjoining rooms. Please don't be fooled by the website bedroom pic, did not look like this. We stayed in a cupboard!! This hotel has so much history and so much potential. A bit of TLC would go along way and make a huge difference

A lovely old hotel with black & white frontage perfectly situated in an old Welsh county town.
Everybody was so helpful, the booking was made very efficiently, and I got a call back to follow up a voicemail question. Happy to take dogs, though in the end we decided to leave ours in the car.
Great staff, very friendly, in reception, the bar and the restaurant. Food was great, including the best poached eggs I've eaten in years (so rare). Good selection of local beers in the bar, with separate rooms including one with comfy sofas.
Rooms are probably all different sizes, so they rate them differently with different prices. Excellent value compared with the new normal.
All-in-all an excellent stay in a great location: good reason to stay overnight in this picturesque town.

We recently organized a wedding at the Dragon. Suffice to say that the event was quite excellent. The staff were friendly and extremely accommodating to all of our guests. The food was excellent and the service second to none. Particular mention here must be made for the Wedding Planner, Lesley, who provided a quite outstanding service.
The rooms are an eclectic mix of sizes and styles but we virtually took over the entire hotel and all of our guests were pleased with their accommodation and the overall cleanliness of the rooms. This was not the first time we have stayed and so we booked with confidence, having had an excellent experience previously. This is a little gem of a hotel, in a delightful location and I recommend it to other potential guests without reservation.

Just don’t bother. Having worked in the hospitality and customer facing industry for years I’ve never had so many repeated negative experiences as I have had at the Dragon Hotel I’ll never go back again.
Booked in for dinner. I ordered a Steak, medium rare. Arrived well done. Sent back, 2nd steak arrives fine. Go to pay. Told I have to for 2 steaks! Mortified. No apology from staff or management.
Then our next visit. Try calling for hours for our calls not to be answered. We take a 25/30 minute drive out for our dinner, find a table and go to order only to be told they’re not doing food. No social announcements, no signage outside, no return phone calls. Until, I made myself very apparent that I was so disappointed with my experience again, after I left the general manager managed to find my number in the several missed calls, only to tell me I wasn’t welcome back.
A word to hotel management. Please train your staff with a degree of customer service. I’d expect a general manager to deal with an issue face to face. Not go through a missed call list and hide behind a phone call.
Also please train your staff that lying to a customer will only make a situation worse. Being told they were rushed off their feet all day, however said manager was stood chatting to customers for at least 10’minutes isn’t being rushed off your feet.
Anyone wanting a great meal and excellent customer service probably doesn’t want to book the Dragon.

I can’t fault this lovely place
Staff on reception are so helpful and friendly
Room is clean cosy and very comfortable… please upgrade the hairdryers…
The food is outstanding here, all seemingly locally sourced ingredients and cooked to perfection, I only wish I could have tried some cake in the afternoon with my beautifully made latte!
Breakfast is first class!
They are doggy friendly and she was welcomed warmly with staff always asking if she’d like a water bowl. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Such lovely people.
You have to stay here if you’re visiting mid wales…
I was on business but have decided I will return for leisure in the fall to see the countryside and all its autumn colours
Thankyou to all the team here for really making us feel welcome!

We stayed here for a short break with our little dog. We found all the staff to be very friendly but particularly the young girl on reception who was always helpful and cheerful. The Saturday was extremely busy with a walking event taking place in the town and live music in the hotel in the evening. She was even having to collect glasses for the bar and she still found time to help us out. She worked a 15 hour shift and was very professional with everyone, we thought she deserved a medal!
Our dog friendly room was clean and comfortable and although close to the bar the noise seemed to stop around 10.30pm. The water pipes seem to make a bit of noise at times but it is a very old building with lots of character and you can't expect anything else.
The food in the Bistro was excellent on the 2 evenings we dined. There was a good selection for breakfast, fruit, cereals, yogurt and a choice of cooked food.
Montgomery is an ideal place for walkers, the town promotes local walks with plenty of leaflets to guide the way and the hotel is an ideal place to stop with your dog.

Hi,
I am just checking our availability and on 23rd July we only have a single room available.
Late check-ins can usually be accommodated - please give the hotel a call and we can try and help.
Kind regards
The Dragon Hotel team
Dear Mr Bressil, the room you have booked does not include dressing gowns and unfortunately that room is not one of our dog friendly rooms and I cant move you as we are full this evening.
Kind regards Sarah
