Travellers' Choice
Richard’s Cabanas Privacy in a green and serene country environment on the edge of Tissamaharama. A tranquil cool oasis in which exclusive and secluded garden cabanas are surrounded by trees, shrubbery, and an array of indigenous birds attracted to the passing stream. Our swimming pool is kept in sparkling pristine condition. Smartly furnished, spotlessly clean rooms with wide verandas and spacious en suite bathrooms with hot-and-cold. A/C: wifi that always works! You can choose from pool-side rooms in the dining room area, or others in a more sequestered area nearby. Parking provided and arrangements made for drivers’ accommodation nearby. Delicious home-made food cooked to order and eaten either in our open sided thatched roof dining room or on your patio, as you wish. Immediate access to walks and cycle-rides through paddy fields to explore nearby lakes and temples. We can organize safaris to the national parks, camping, bird watching trips, airport shuttles and island-wide tours. Tissa is the nearest town to Yala and Bundala National Parks which are each less than is 20 km away. Kataragama Temples are 18 kms and Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport 19 is kms away

We stayed for 2 days in Richards Cabanas. The hosts are very very friendly and offer a beautiful place and delicious meals. We had Rotti and Curry and Rice with vegetables out if their own garden, all organic, of course self cooked. The garden with a nice Pool is beautiful, bananas, coconut palms and Mango trees around. The hosts organized a Safari to Yala for us. Everything was well prepared, we had breakfast and delicious lunch with us. Kalu our Safari Guide did a great great job. He explained and showed us great places and we had enough time to observe the animals. If you going for a Safari ask for him. So finally, we highly recommend this place and hope to come back soon. Thanks to Ajith and his whole family for a great time.

Property's Favourite Review
We had two rooms in the new new addition to this beautiful boutique hotel. Absolute bliss, We loved being surrounded by a gorgeous fruit orchard with hammock, sparkling clean pool, birds to watch, and adjacent to a parrot-green rice paddy. The new open-sided Restaurant serves delicious Lanka and Western food and is reasonably priced. The rooms are spacious with large comfy beds and dreamy soft pillows. Decor blends minimalism and comfort. There are papasan chairs for lounging and reading on the verandas. Best of all: the staff. Amila and his Dad are warm friendly people who do everything to make one’s stay easy and enjoyable. This is a family with vast experience in Yala guiding and taking tourists to different parts of the island. They arranged three trips for us, all reasonably priced, with careful driving and fantastic surprises along the way. Will not spoil by telling everything. Ask Amila or his Dad if you are interested in exploring the Thissa region. Maury is also a relative and I highly recommend asking for him to drive you through Yala. He is attuned to the ways of wild animals and has a sharp eye for spotting tracks of leopards and for sighting all creatures from the tiniest bird to the most humongous elephant. We saw two leopards and a bear in one day: a rare occurrence and a treasured memory caught on camera. This place feels like home and you can bet we’ll be going back to visit again next year. Thank you for the best stay in Sri Lanka

We approached Richard Cabanas for a 1 nights camping trip in the nearby Yala National Park. His knowledge of the park is exceptional and arranged for us a rustic camping trip further into the park than any other place we could find. We also stayed at his Cabanas which is delightfully serene with a pool surrounded by mango and banana trees, so nice to relax to after the safari. Hands down a big recommendation from me.

Tissa offers excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting and the staff at Richards Cabanas helped us to enjoy that to the full. On our first day we took advantage of their free bikes and local map to spend a wonderful morning bird watching on the tranquil shores of Yoda Wewa. The following day Amila arranged a morning safari to Yala NP (starting from the hotel at 4:30 am). Although Maury was not available they organised a very experienced guide for us who really knew the wildlife, especially the birds, and capped a superb safari spotting an enormous range of animals, by being the first to find the only leopard seen in the park that morning. Highlights of the hotel are the lovely pool, the delicious food both for breakfast and dinner, and the beautiful garden settings. Owing to its small size it really does provide a lovely peaceful haven in a busy town.

Tissa is a wonderful place, with national parks like Yala and Bundala nearby. What better place to stay here than Richard's Cabanas: a couple of lovely cabanas surrounded by trees, animals and friendly people. The cabanas are well equipped, with good beds, water cooker, fridge, and a very nice seating area outside. The pool is new and surrounded by fruit trees. You can have a nice lunch or dinner here as well. Bikes are available, and the area around the cabanas is very nice to exlore (rice fields, an enormous stupa and trees with hundreds of flying dogs that fly out when the sun sets). The owner is fantastic: he is very friendly, is knowledgeable about Sri Lanka and Tissa and will help with any question. While we were there an accident happened to a neighbor and he supported her in every way. We were impressed!
