Detailed Reviews
We enjoyed an early Saturday lunch, food was great ,tasty, interesting menu and food arrived promptly and hot. Wine was perfectly cold and staff gave us taste of one of the beers to make a decision. Decor is great and the refurbishment sympathetic, nice space ,airy and light even on a rainy day.
Good to see friendly familiar faces of staff who used to work there, we will be booking again when the family are next over.

We stayed for 2 nights in the Rowan which we chose because of the decor. It was beautiful - we loved the colours. The bed was so comfortable and the suite so cosy. The rooms had been renovated to a high standard. We felt that the room was a little hot for our liking but we do like a cool bedroom. The only 2 little things to improve on - provide back bacon instead of the very crispy streaky for breakfast and ensure that the mirror and area behind the bathroom sink is cleaned daily. The staff were super friendly and we will definitely return, hopefully later this year when the weather is better.

I found the establishment as a result of a Sunday Times article and as I was visiting Chester I spent a night here. Even my most humble room had a high level of fit out with a good king bed (why would anyone want anything smaller?), excellent linen and a large walk-in shower. As a former award winning inn owner I know a thing or two about how things should not be.......and the Bear Inn seems to have got it all right.
The staff were chatty and on request provided fresh milk for my tea as well as noting my supper reservation.
I slept very well but found the duvet a little too warm for my liking. However a window was opened and the snug bug in a rug mode followed. The setting is quiet and my humble room which was in the coach house which made it even quieter. One thing I cannot abide as a traveller is hearing other folks do whatever they do when they are away. I could not hear a TV, amorous coupling and even the door closed quietly.
Go stay and on your visit eat at the inn as it is really wonderful and excellent value for money. A Michelin worthy dining experience that also leaves your tummy feeling full.
VERY IMPRESSED!

As readers can see I wrote a glowing report on The Bear a short while ago. I stand by that report. Last night we returned with our friends and sadly discovered a sharp practice which means The Bear has lost a customer, me.
We were shown to our table and all tables at The Bear Inn have 2 bottles of mineral water in the center. We had another enjoyable meal until the time I asked for the bill. There on the itemised bill was an entry of £5.00 but conveniently failed to identify clearly to what it related, When I asked to what it related I was told it was the charge for the mineral water. That is to say the mineral water I had not asked for, the mineral water we had not touched !!! It was still in the bottles, the seals so obviously intact. Our friends had the same charge on their bill. When I complained I was told to reduce my payment accordingly. I do not know how many tables they have at The Bear but it’s a nice little earner. I just wonder how many other diners have failed to pick up on this. If something not asked for is placed on the table I do not expect to be charged but when it so obviously hasn’t even been touched.

Response from Melanie Board, Owner at The Bear Inn

Dear Julian P When we seat guests for lunch or dinner, our first question is ' Would you like still or sparkling water for your table?' You have the option to decline either . At the bottom of our menus it clearly states that Purezza Water is charged at £1 per head for unlimited chilled, filtered still or sparkling water. £1 per head - I recently went to a restaurant which charged me £5 PER BOTTLE of Wenlock Edge sparking water. Now , if you had objected to this, you had every right to request that it be removed from your bill - instead you have decided to give us 1/5 for 'sharp practise?' Please Julian P, get real - we are by no means trying to hide the fact that we supply a great service of filtered, chilled, still or sparkling water for your entire lunch or dinner for ONE POUND per person unlimited. Sharp Practise is insulting especially when hospitality is on its absolute knees and we are trying our hardest to supply 30 people with jobs and just a great product and service to Hodnet and North Shropshire. Your comments are insensitive and completely unnecessary and the fact that you wont visit again is completely your loss.

My friend and I stayed here on a weekend trip to visit Powis Castle in Wales.
For an unassuming country inn, we were so impressed with the Bear's recent renovation, character, luxury, and style, all at very affordable prices. I stayed in the Juniper Suite, which had a living area on one floor and the bedroom on the one above. The rooms were so comfortable and modern, but with an authentic country house charm. I especially loved the random but well selected books in my room.
The restaurant was terrific as well, with artfully prepared and plated dishes, friendly service, and a good wine list. It was great to see such a local vibe, with the lord and lady of the manor next door joining for dinner as well!
Our only complaint was the music. For a place that's clearly put so much thought into its branding, its menu, its story, and its decor, the choice of bland Top 40- music seemed uninspired. A thoughtful playlist of something like British rock, old jazz, or even chill hip hop would be much better!
We'd certainly recommend The Bear

We have just returned from a night away at The Bear Inn. This was a trip I planned over Christmas as it was a birthday treat for my husband. During this week there had been a press review and the photos had been amazing! Making me more excited to visit this weekend.
Well we weren't disappointed, upon arriving in the car park we knew this would be a special stay not even Storm Eunice would spoil it!
Every member of staff were friendly and receptionist who showed us to our room (in the coach house) was lovely.
We checked in to our room and then went down for dinner, first having a drink in the bar. A bar area full of character and original features, then to the restaurant serving modern British food. At an exceptional standard, we had main and pudding and both courses were faultless. Waiting staff friendly and very attentive, and while dining you must make a visit to the most amazing bathroom!
In the morning, breakfast served in the restaurant, and a welcome treat of pre breakfast which was a lovely addition whilst your breakfast is cooked.
This is a place you must visit to truly appreciate the beauty of the building and the food. Well done on creating such a gem.
We look forward to returning.

This was one of the nicest hotels we have stayed at. We were on a visit to the area for an overnight stay and could not complain about anything. The room was so comfortable .with lovely beds. The meal in the evening was excellent with complimentary bread with mint butter was unusual, as was the breakfast with the complimentary fruit yoghurt and the mini croissant and pastry and the Eggs Benedict was cooked perfectly with unlimited pots of tea. All the staff were very helpful and very friendly. Would not hesitate to stay there again.

+1
Absolutely fabulous from start to finish, we stayed two nights recently for a 90th Birthday celebration. Our room, Alder, was in the main building , overlooking the courtyard. I thought it might be noisy but it wasn’t at all. It had a very comfortable 6ft bed, and a bathroom with walk in shower. Nice toiletries are provided, ( by Bamford), towels are large and fluffy and the shower was great with a good head of pressure.
The food is so impressive, the service is excellent, and very friendly, and I would highly recommend it.

We went to The Bear Inn for dinner in the first week of opening and had supper in the amazingly renovated pub. It was a pleasure from start to finish. We were well looked-after and it's wonderful to see this historic venue so beautifully reimagined. The menu was really varied and all in all it's a brilliant atmosphere and experience - we will definitely be returning soon!

Wow, what a transformation! A really well thought out renovation which is so sympathetic to the area.Early days yet but the foundations are set for it to flourish. Staff are clearly enjoying working here and so good to see Sharon operating in the restaurant, a real asset to the hotel. Chloe the manager spent time having a chat with us and made us very welcome. We only popped out for a quick lunch and were pleasantly surprised by our choice of simple fish and chips, all perfectly prepared with an interesting choice of spices and herbs. Service excellent I wish the whole team good luck going forward, and we’ll be visiting again soon.
