we decided to spend the money and get the full package of private hot tub with full meals because we needed to experience an authentic Japanese inn once in our lives, and don't regret spending a cent...I could not fault the service or establishment in any way, and the food was exceptional...the old town is picturesque and the whole experience...

Firstly I'd like to thank every single person at Hotel Kokuya. It was literally a perfect experience at Shibu-Onsen. We had another Ryokan booked for the dates we'd be in the area. However when we got to the place, there were no one to receive us. After trying to reach the owner of the place we've asked help to the...

I stayed at Shibu-onsen Kokuya in early April with a friend on our whirlwind trip to Japan, and between this stay and our hang-time with the local macaques, this was my favorite part of the trip. I truly don't have enough good things to say about Kokuya - they were so welcoming, right from the check in where they gave...

We had an exceptional stay at Kokuya. Everything was well organised & it's runs like a well-oiled machine. We were collected from the station on time by shuttle van. We like how the Japanese are very punctual & everything runs on time. It might not suit guests who are looking for a lot of flexibility; but we were staying 2...

Private baths in hotel was great for the shyer guest in our group. The fluffiest goose down duvets to sleep under.

We stayed just for one night at Kokuya. We had booked a room with a private bath and had chosen to include a Japanese style dinner and a western style breakfast. Upon arrival we checked in and were very surprised (but excited) to hear that we'd been upgraded to a nicer room that was closer to the main areas of...

One of the most special places I've ever stayed. Lovely ryokan with very friendly staff who pay attention to the smallest details - for example my husband is very tall so they immediately supplied him with the right sized slippers and kimono, and in the evening when they laid out our futons his was a special extra long one. Definitely...

Extremely nice place in Shibu Onsen. The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. The Onsens in the Ryokan were a great way to relax after walking around all day in the cold or after skiing. The hotel will provide complimentary transport to and from Yudanaka station based on your schedule.

Stayed here for two nights and it was amazing! We got a room with private outdoor onsen bath on the balcony. Could've just stayed in there all day! Would highly recommend getting any of the rooms with your own onsen bath. Even without a private onsen there are many baths within the ryokan that you can use, all with different...

We went to the Snow Monkey Park and wanted to stay in an onsen hotel nearby. Instead of going to the better known onsen town Yudanaka, we chose Shibu Onsen because it seems to be more compact and has nine public bath houses that come from different sources and with different medical effects. And the street is well-lit even at...
