This was my fourth stay over several years in this small, friendly and simple biz hotel. Room 406 is a single- bed room facing more or less south and overlooking the tracks. It’s a bit worn, but everything functioned well and it was a very good value. The bed was comfortable and the window opens enough for some good ventilation. Despite freight trains whizzing past all night, I slept well. If trains bother you, get a room on the other side, they are actually much quieter -- but I think they are mostly twin rooms, meaning more expensive. The bathroom is classic compact business hotel style, with less shelf space than usual but with a temperature- control armature, always a welcome feature. The breakfast was excellent. It was a Japanese set meal with an excellent portion of spinach and sesame seeds, salmon, a very good omelet, dumplings, sausage, potato salad, and of course, miso soup and rice. Though there was really no choice, it was homemade and the mama-san taking care of things was really nice. The “coin laundry” is behind the kitchen – the staff take you back there, you throw your kit in the machine, they push the buttons and ask for 300 yen and 40 minutes – longer if you include drying time. The hotel setting is not romantic, wedged between the train tracks and the Sapporo Drug on the town’s main street (not Route 5). But it’s basically right at the station and convenient to restaurants, konbinis, shopping and the like. The staff have prepared a nice map showing everything that’s around. BTW, there’s an excellent coffee shop / restaurant next to the Gurkha on the station plaza. This place is called the Horaku and has excellent curry, steamed scallops and a very nice staff – give it a try. I hope, when the Shinkansen stop comes through Yakumo in 15 – 20 years, that the Fresco is not shoved out of the way! Since the main part of the station is on the Fresco side, chances are it will survive. Fingers crossed, I hope to keep returning.

I stayed here twice, in July and in August, on a long- distance bicycling tour with one of my sons. The hotel is a classic business hotel, not fancy but functional. The first stay we got room 215, a twin room. The view out the window was of the back of the Sapporo Drugstore, not much to see. The next was 313, high enough to see over the adjacent building and to the sea. The room (both were identical) was clean and functioned well. There is no WiFi, but an RJ-45 cable. The hangers are along the wall, e.g., no closet. There is a fridge, desk- level AC outlets and a coffee – tea service. The bathroom was classic business hotel, but even a bit smaller—but still, good form and function for not much money. Breakfast was a set Japanese menu, which was well- done. It’s tucked between the Sapporo Drug Store and the tracks of the Hakodate Main Line. Most of the trains stop at the nearby station (110m from the hotel’s door.) The passenger trains don’t make much noise at all, but the JR Freight trains also go through and can make some noise. The rooms facing the drug store would be a bit less noisy. There is also a hotel annex on the main road opposite the station’s parking lot and taxi stand. On the corner there is a very good Yakitori restaurant. Eventually the Shikansen will stop at Yakumo at a new station in planning. (The Shinkansen will make its first Hokkaido appearance at the Shin Hakodate Station in March 2016 and reach Sapporo some time around 2030.) The staff were friendly and efficient And the town, judging from our interactions with them, are very welcoming of their guests. The town is only 19,000 people but they have a big heart. I really liked the place. All in all, the Fresco offers good value for the money, and the people are very supportive. So if you will be in Yakumo, it’s recommended.
