This is our 4th time coming to the Ridge and it was awesome. The place is stunning and from an accommodation perspective the rooms and beds were super comfortable. The buffet was delicious and sets you up for a great day skiing or just taking in the local eateries. There are many great amenities such as ski locker area and a laundry. The staff were are so friendly that they drive you to dinner and suggest where you should have dinner. The games room is a great place for the kids to go and chill out and play games. The antlers restaurant is very convenient as well. Overall the ridge is a amazing place and a place we always enjoy returning.

We had an amazing stay at The Ridge. Staff were super friendly and helpful (special shout out to Dimi, Elli, Liv and the rest of the restaurant crew and chef). And thanks to James for shuttling us around when needed.
Easy dining at The Antler within the Hotel, good breakfast with great coffee, and a relaxing lounge/bar area where we quickly met some super nice guests. Easy 5min walk to the lift each day. Close to Rhythm Ski Hire and a lovely Onsen if you’re so inclined.
Room was clean with lovely view.

Our family of 4 spent wonderful 10 nights at The Ridge in January 2013. The service and standard of accommodation was outstanding, and I am sorry it has taken me so long to finally write this review.

The most outstanding thing about The Ridge was the service. Nikki, Chris and the team worked incredibly hard to make every guest's stay something special. It is a small hotel, so the team are multi-tasking all day, but they are also keenly aware of guests needs. They recommended and booked restaurants and Snow Monkey tours; they ran a daily shuttle to the supermarket (as well as the chemist and ATM if required); they lent the kids tools to make snowmen; they dropped us at restaurants in the evening, and the Happo bus terminal; they even made vegemite toast specially for the kids one morning when we wanted to catch the early bus to Cortina (before the breakfast buffet was in full swing). Having said that, the team would get the breakfast buffet running earlier on powder days to ensure that everyone could get out early - very much appreciated by all the skiers!

We dined at The Ridge's Antlers restaurant at least 3 times because the food was outstanding, and exceptional value. We ate sensational Australian lamb and tender Wagyu beef dishes for under AUD$30 (as the exchange rate was at the time). Even the bar snacks were of a very high standard and good value (delicious burgers).

Hakuba is very spread out, but I really liked the location of The Ridge. It is a short walk to one of the Happo One base areas, and there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance (but make sure you book before venturing out - many do not accept diners without a booking, even if the restaurant is not full!) It is right across the road from the Mominoki bus terminal, where you can catch a shuttle to many ski areas or to the Happo bus terminal. The Snow Monkey bus tour also leaves from the Mominoki.

We stayed in adjoining rooms, one with a kitchenette (microwave, portable cook top). Both rooms had fridges, the room with kitchenette also had a bath. The rooms were comfortable and spacious, and beautifully furnished in Western style. We arrived having just spent 5 nights in a traditional Japanese Ryokan, and The Ridge was a very welcome and extremely comfortable relief.

When we were there, almost all staff were Westerners, and English was virtually the only language used (I think the housekeeping staff spoke Japanese). If there is one thing you should think about before booking The Ridge, it is that you won't be getting a lot of exposure to Japanese culture here. We had immersed ourselves in Japanese culture at other times during our trip, but we were in Hakuba to ski, and staying in an extremely comfortable Western style hotel with outstanding Western food and speaking English ensured that we made the most of our time on the snow.

Our first impressions were very positive because of the great location and hotel facilities. Where it started to unravel was the average level of service that you would not necessarily expect for a hotel of this standard. Clearly staff are predominately recruited from the hundreds of young seasonal travellers who's primary objective is to ski rather then provide quality service. This is all ok but it does take away from the experience. There were lots of small examples (eg, not enough places at breakfast; one over worked staff member on duty; general indifference when asking for tips on the area etc ... ) over the course of our stay that left us feeling we would probably not return to The Ridge.

Stayed here in January.

The place is really picturesque and very close to ski fields. Rooms were spacious and beautifully laid out. Great lounge and nice kids/games room. Breakfasts were good and dinners (when they arrived) were delicious. Hard to see the claimed western/Japanese fusion on the menu though.
While some of the staff were good (in particular Luke who was superb) the overall policy of 1) employing Australians with very little knowledge of Japan; 2) employing working holiday Australians/New Zealanders with a working holiday attitude to match does not really cut it when charging extremely high prices. I was intrigued to see the rave reviews from other guests about staff - we must have got them on a bad week.

When we arrived and had phoned ahead from Nagano station for our pick up at the Hakuba Bus terminal, all the guests from other hotels were picked up on time whereas we had to wait 15 minutes for the manager who on arrival did not apologise and watched us load our bags into the van.
The cleaning of rooms was sporadic and the service in the restaurant almost reminiscent of Fawlty Towers with 90 minutes wait for dinner when there were only 4 other diners in the restaurant. While the staff were happy to drive us around to various locations, the lack of local knowledge of the manager was noteworthy. When asked for recommendations for a local Onsen, her response "I don't know, I'm not really into them" was surprising.

As our friend who works in the industry noted the hardware was great, the software needs work.
Despite this, overall this was a really comfortable place to stay but a very western experience. If you want something a little more Japanese including attitude to customer service, I'd go elsewhere.

The staff at the Ridge were the best & so helpful during our week long stay there in mid January. We were 2 families travelling together & had booked the 4 bed apartment. Unfortunately one of the children was sick & Nadia & her staff were wonderful, organising medical help, driving the child & his parent to the local doctor & looking after all of us so well by organising ski/ boarding lessons for our group of 8, dinner reservations & supermarket runs. We had dinner in the restaurant 3 times & ate hearty cooked breakfasts every morning before heading out for a day of skiing/ boarding. Our apartment was warm & comfortable with 2 bathrooms & toilets, a full kitchen, laundry & lounge area & comfortable beds. We could walk to the Happone Skifield from the hotel & also catch the free shuttle bus a 2 min walk from the hotel. The ski locker & drying room were located in the basement & the best part was at the end of our stay, our ski rental equipment was picked up by the rental company. It was all so easy & we would not hesitate to come back & stay at the Ridge if we are staying in Hakuba.

This hotel has everything you want from a ski resort! Nice and cosy bar with an open fire place. The hotel rooms with a small entrance hall where you can hang off your wet clothes and shoes. Nice western rooms with nice schampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the bathrooms. It’s walking distance to the ski rental shop Rythm and some of the restaurants. You can also walk to the first ski lift. The ONLY complain I have is the breakfast. It’s not so many choices. I would wish for more variations of bread, cut fruits and berries, maybe some bacon and scrambled eggs. But all in all, I can strongly recommend this hotel. The staff was super friendly!

If you judged 'The Ridge' on great location, good well designed accommodation, obliging staff you would rate it as a five out of five, but you can find many other establishments that meet this criteria. If you rated 'The Ridge' as premium accommodation as indicated by the price and as value for money you would rate it as a two out of five. To classify the Ridge as value for money, and justify the high tariff senior management need to address the following:-
- For the price there should be complimentary transport to ski lifts or at least a bus pickup at the front door
- Wi-Fi that doesn't saturate to unworkable the majority of the time.
- Satelllite TV connection that seems limited to mostly Japanese domestic TV, repetitive BBC and Steven Segal re runs.
- Other in room entertainment is a selection of badly outdated DVD's
-There is a need for a proper barman that can mix cocktails, and
- a much more imaginative breakfast menu and presentation that goes beyond a repetitive Bain-Marie

When we set out to make accommodation reservations in Hakuba we found it to be a struggle. We have enjoyed so many Nth US and European family ski holidays - skiing Japan was a completely new experience. We knew we wanted western comforts (Apres Ski is high on my list), yet still wanted to feel part of the local atmosphere. The Ridge fulfilled all of our needs. Well appointed (drying room, large accommodation rooms, comfortable beds, great restaurant and bar). The walk to the slopes was an easy 5 mins stroll and the bus to town and other ski fields is at the end of the drive. This property is more pricey than many in the region - however I believe it is worth it if you like comfort and good service with your ski!

My husband & I stayed here for 7 nights and in a Mountain View Room. The room itself was very big and had a lovely view. The bed itself was quite soft though which I found quite unusual for Japan. The shower & toilet where very tiny however the shower had plenty of hot water and good water pressure. The staff were lovely and it was great to relax after a day of skiing in front of the fire and have Brendan pour your wine and provide entertainment. Staff are more than happy to recommend & make reservations for dinner. Short walk to the bus stop for Ski Lift access and the Ski Hire Shop and there was one lift down the road which was only 5 minutes away. We had only one dinner here before we went to a private Onsen and I must say it was the best burger (yes I know how could we order a burger in Japan) I have had for a very long time. Breakfast was included in our room rate each morning and while it was ok it was disappointing it was only a western style breakfast. After staying in Kyoto and having a traditional breakfast each morning I think this would have been a nice touch to our stay. All in all a great to place to stay and very stylish.
