We stayed at Schanze for 1 week during January 2020. A great member of staff called Joe picked us up from the Iyama train station in a van. The location was perfect, being only a couple of minutes walk to the Nagasaki Gondola.
We were under the assumption we had separate rooms, however the 5 of us (5 adults) ended up all in the same room - not exactly what we would like. But it was ok! We had our own drying room downstairs, so we didn’t have to share the squished one upstairs which was lucky!
They delivered breakfast foods to our room every three days, so we could make our own in the room with the kitchenette. Bread, eggs, bacon, fruit, yoghurt, packet noodles, coffee pods, juice and milk. Really great!
They also supplied us with 2, 5 day lift passes for half the price. And upon request we could do washing at anytime.
The staff also helped us book dinners for our time here in Nozawa, because you can’t get dinner at most places without a reservation. Definitely book dinners for your time here. The restaurants get booked out fast.
The staff are very accommodating, and I would recommend this place to anyone coming to Nozawa!

We got a traditional room with an en-suite, it was cozy and I couldn’t be happier with my stay there. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful (special thanks to Francisco). Everthing was clean and the futons were comfortable. The best part about this lodge is that it’s the closest accom to the snow, it’s super close and it’s almost possible to ski directly to the lodge. Thanks Schanze, would defiantly come back!

Really helpful and knowledgeable staff, gave great advise for ski runs and dinner locations. Schanze probably has the best location in the area. Breakfast was awesome too. Definitely my top choice on my next trip. I’m will be back!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Schanze. Nozawa is an amazing ski resort-beautiful, deep snow with powder. On arrival, we enjoyed the hospitality & local knowledge of Eugene. He recommended and showed us on a map various places we could eat dinner (or lunch), the different types of onsen and how they work. Eugene continued to give us friendly advice and provide support during our stay (and cooked up some local specialities one evening-mmm!) We enjoyed meeting other guests in the common lounge/breakfast dining areas. Breakfast was ample with a variety of foods.Kelvin too was most helpful.
We were happy with our traditional room which overlooked the ski slopes and ski jump.
Overall a fantastic experience!

Stayed at Schanze on a first time ski trip to Nozawa and selected it because of the "ski-in ski-out" features. It did not disappoint being only a few minutes walk to the main gondola. The lodge does have a drying room but we chose to use the storage facilities at the ski-hire place next to the gondola (gives a 10% discount to Schanze guests!)
The village of Nozawa is located on a reasonably steep slope - base of the ski area. A lot of the accommodation is at the base or lower down the slope which means either getting the bus up to the car park at the top or lugging the gear up! Schanze is at the top which makes it a sweet journey to the gondola each morning.
ROOMS: We (father and 18 year old son) had a Standard room with attached Bathroom. I was wondering how we would go with the futons on tatami mats but was pleasantly surprised. The rooms are compact (particularly the bathroom) but adequate. The room has a heater with instructions in Japanese - ???? It would be helpful if management organised some instructions in English as heating on a ski holiday is important. We did work it out but ....
FACILITIES: There is a common room come dining room which is where breakfast is served. This was a good place for a chat with other guests and even a card game. Breakfast was good, something different each day!
MANAGEMENT / STAFF: Top marks to Grace and Kelvin who were extremely welcoming and helpful. Grace was genuinely interested in making your stay a good one. Schanze is not a 'five star resort' but offers adequate accommodation in a great location. We would stay here again if returning to Nozawa.

The only thing that was good about this lodge was Grace, one of the hostesses. Our stay at the lodge was not a pleasant experience. Every night was a sleepless night: mattresses and pillows as thin as paper. Japanese style futons are not like this! We battled every day and night with the heater since no one in that lodge can speak or read Japanese to help with the instructions. Breakfast in the morning was overcooked omelette: as dry as the desert and with only one pathetic string of cheese and one tiny strip of ham. I’d like to see that self-acclaimed cooking certificate...

Nozawa Onsen is a beautiful town juxtaposed with beginner friendly ski slopes. Schanze Nozawa is located perfectly between both. We spent 4 nights at the lodge and enjoyed our experience.

Our room was decently sized and we had tatami mat flooring with futons for beds. The beddings were nice and thick, and we could rest well each night. There are also ample shower and bathroom facilities. Strong water pressure and hot water was available in the showers.

Each morning we had a wonderful breakfast available to us (bread, fruits, jam, cereal, coffee and fruit juices etc) and there was a varied option of daily cooked foods (like poached eggs, french toast etc). It was the perfect meal that kickstarted our day.

The staff were really friendly and helpful in giving us advice about all sorts of things, from which Onsen is recommended or which ski slopes were good for us to try out. We had a great time mostly due to their encouragement (to try out some slopes we were hesitant to at first).

We had a truly wonderful time and would love to return to Schanze Nozawa again soon.

We had the best time at the Schanze which made our trip to Nozawa just perfect! Ride in/out...we literally rode to the road out front! No time wasted getting up the mountain or home.
The staff were so friendly, helpful and happy so it was always a pleasure arriving back there. Brekkie was great...from pancakes to omelettes to cereals and toast.
Rooms were warm and cosy.

The main street is only a short and easy 5min walk so the nightlife and restaurants are really close! I would definitely recommend the Schanze and am intending on returning next February!

The pic attached is of the Gondola in the background and only about 10metres walk down to the Schanze...perfect 😊

Stayed at Schanze for the second time in Feb 2016 and wow.. this place could not be more conveniently positioned.
I was here 5 nights this time and we chose to stay here as its only a 2 minute walk to the Nagasaka Gondola but still close enough to the town centre to sneak out for a good meal or a few drinks after a big day of snowboarding.
The closest bar is actually only 2 doors down the road and the closest onsen is 5 minutes away.
Rooms and shared washrooms were always clean and the lounge atmosphere was great. We met lots of fellow snowboarders & skiers.
Staff here are great and ensure that guests are well looked after although if you are vegan, your breakfast options are limited (bread & jams?)
Will definitely return here soon !!!!

Almost hesitant to write this as you can tell by the time it's taken me to do it.
I don't want to tell you all just how good it is at Schanze.
Rob and the girls made our stay with 3 kids a most memorable one.
Proximity to lifts is a bonus, clean, great breaky and very helpful.
Will be back next year.... If we can get in!
