The breakfast and dinner included with the stay were superb as well. The meals are served in the typical Ryokan style: rice, a variety of dishes and something interesting to tie it all together! The menu changes daily but it typically looks like: day 1: DIY tempura + freshly grilled fish, day 2: steamed pork shabu shabu. However, do note that the ingredients are seasonal so they may vary depending on which month you visit.
There are two onsens, a public one and a private one. I do believe that the private one requires a booking to be made while at the hotel. The onsen is quaint and simple, for a nice shower and wind down after a long day of adventure. I cannot recommend this place enough, definitely check out this place if you have the chance!
Stayed one night and we were very comfortable.
The Onsen is good.
The set meal was excellent, a DIY tempura with sashimi pickles veg etc. The grape ice cream was lovely ( and I'm not a fan of ice cream).
The futons are prepared whilst you dine
The local beers are good.
Breakfast was again in a private area and a set of courses. Excellent quality. I really enjoyed it. Introduction to further new (to me) flavours and food items.
The family who run the hotel are delightful and pleased to help. The owner found time to wave us off.

One can choose to use either the private outdoor onsen (which has to be booked) or the public indoor onsen (that does not require booking). As the private onsen does not have shower facilities, one has to wash up in the indoor onsen or in the room before proceeding for the private onsen. However we found that as most guests choose to use the private onsen, the public onsen was quite deserted and very much like a private onsen!
A member of our family was a vegetarian (which was informed to the hotel upon reservation), and the cook (the daughter's husband) was able to prepare delicious vegetarian meals for her, and the spread for both dinner and breakfast for our family included the freshest local seafood, meat and vegetables.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, right at the edge of the wilderness of the Shiretoko National Park. If you are looking for some peace, solitude, fresh air and sweeping vistas, you will find it here. We caught sight of wild deer and foxes numerous times, as we drove to and from the hotel. We regrettably did not see any of the famous bears who inhabit the national park.
The only thing we would mention is that perhaps the kitchen ventilation could have been better as the smell of cooking permeates the hotel during mealtimes. However this is not something that we were too bothered about.
The only thing I would like to mention for other travelers, is that if you are fond of fruits, and milk products you should bring them with you. The breakfast and dinner mostly comprise of fish, sea food, vegetables. Though it was absolutely fantastic to eat, after two days, we were craving for some fresh fruits :)

The hotel staff couldn't be more helpful. They helped us with check-in, grabbed *all* of our bags to our room before we had a chance to say no, showed us around the facilities and offered introductions to different dishes at dinner and breakfast.
The room was pretty much of what you'd expect in a Japanese ryokan - they convert the sitting area to the sleeping area while you are having dinner. The room spotlessly clean and felt very cozy. We did experience problem with the hot water (varying from scolding hot to freezing cold liberally), and the hotel seems to stop the heat at around 10pm and the room was very cold at night.
There was an in-door public onsen and two outdoor private onsens. The open-air onsens are about 20m from the main building and the changing room was open-air as well, so make sure to put on the puffer coat and snow boots (all provided by the hotel) in the winter.
Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and had plenty of local or home-made dishes. Making tempura ourselves was a great experience.
If not for the water temperature and the heating issue, this stay would have been perfect. Regardless, I will stay here again next time I visit Shiretoko.

"Only two levels - we had upstairs with a slightly better view of the sea rather than directly facing the road."Read full review
