Love this place and kurokawa onsen area. There’re 2 outdoors onsen separate for male and female, 2 public indoor for male and female and 6 private onsen. The whole building are lovely and clean. Service is amazing. Food is impressive. There is a beautiful river in the middle of 2 buildings, amazing scenery.

Front desk staff was not as friendly when we checked-in and enquired; we didn't feel welcomed. Other staffs were great. Prefer the private onsens. For the outdoor public onsen: was not opened until 7pm on our check-in date, spider webs, no shower, small and simple changing area. Room was nice.

We have just returned from 5weeks touring Japan on holiday and I would have to rate our stay at the Yamabiko Ryokan as one of the highlights of trip!

As we drove in for the first time there was almost a welcoming commitee out the front in expectation of our arrival and they all welcomed us by name! We had 3 people fussing around as I was parking and unloading the car and several of the friendly staff gravitated towards my children to help and entertain them. We feld so comfortable, welcome and at ease. It was almost as though we were family!

The Yamabiko Ryokan is just beautiful. We had a huge Japanese style room with lovely river views (as requested) from every window and the delicious Kaiseki meals were served in private Japanese style rooms in the main building over a covered bridge across the river.

My family are uncomfortable bathing in an onsen in public but that was not a problem here at Yamabiko as there are 6 private onsens (all in the building) which are easily accessible and used on a 'first come first serve basis'. We tried 4 of the private onsens and each one was individually just stunning, right next to the river. Having never tried one before - my children just love onsen now!

Only stayed 1 night and yes it was expensive ~AUD$1200/night for a young family of 4 but we planned for this expense months ahead and enjoyed every minute. Would definitely return. When we left the children almost felt that they were leaving family behind!

We booked this particular ryokan partly because they have this lovely giant Newfoundland dog named Momo as their mascot, and partly because they have 8 different onsen on their property to choose from.

We stayed in the Kikyou (the "Bellflower") room, an airy, spacious and spotlessly clean tatami room - but the oddest thing to us was that there is no shower/bathroom. There is a toilet (plus sink/vanity) but since they expect you to wash yourself at one of their eight onsen they didn't see the need to install individual bathrooms in their guestrooms. Still, it was weird for us.

There are 2 communal onsen here (male and female) and six "family" onsen where you can lock the door and use them privately on your own or with your family on a first come first serve basis.

We only had time to sample three family onsens and they were all gorgeous. We also found time to play a couple rounds of ping pong terribly - though it was a lot of fun.

Two meals (dinner and breakfast) were provided and as kaiseki dinners go, this was top-rated. At the price of AUD$450 for two people, this was easily the most expensive accommodation for us in Japan this trip, but the whole experience was wonderful and we enjoyed ourselves very much.

Yamabiko has about 5 private onsen baths which guests can reserve for own use. Each bath has a different design & good view. It has each a man and woman bath plus an outdoor bath (man & woman separate) too. The ryokan itself is good enough for me to do onsen "hop-around". The staff are friendly and the meals are very good (served in private room). I personally would rate it above average. As it is located off the main streets (and just a few mins' walk to the main streets), it is quiet and secluded. Kurokawa onsen town is especially lovely in autumn. The bridge linking the main hotel to the bath area has nice views. If you are not into onsen, Kurokawa town itself is nostalgic and a good one night getaway.

This Ryokan is worth the 3 hour bus ride from Fukuoka. Its a remote place but i think if you have even the slightest love for nautre, yoy will truly appreciate the forest there, river flowing right in the middle of the ryokan where you will enjoy beautiful scene at the bridge. Carefully chosen interior and exterior design all of them are of Japanese traditional design is all amazing. There are certain things i would like to tell you.

Things to consider before choosing this Onsen (hot spring)

1. Do you really enjoy Onsen? The place ( Kuamoto) is a remote onsen town, 3 hours journey from Kukuoka where you will not have anything much to do. If you are going there, choose to stay max 2.5 days unless you have HUGE love for hot spring. ( i stayed there for 1.5 days)

2. They provide very traditional fine Japanese dining and breakfast with high level of excellency BUT warning to ppl from USA, alot of Japanese food might be 'slimy' for you: Mochi, Japanese Pudding, Tofu etc. However the quality of food is undoubtfully amazing with alot of care. You will FEEL the care from the service they provide. I can guarantee that.

3. No problem even if you have tattoos.
There are 2 public outdoor Onsen and about 7 indoor private Onsen rooms ( approximately usable for max 4 ppl at once) you can enjoy. I did personally asked them if tattoo can be an issue and the answer was no. ( the guy at the front did say "yes" but that was due to his lack of English :p )

So if you choose to stay at this Ryokan, there are things to do before visiting Japan

1. Make an appointment at their website to pick you up at the bus stop. When you contact them, they will ask you when you arrive there at Kuamoto Onsen station.

2. You MUST arrange the bus from Fukuoka to Kuamoto (the ryokan place).
If you havent made the reservation, bring your passport and make one at Tenjin bus station. (Try Hakata bus station too but i am not sure with this one)

Before visiting Kuamoto

1. They provide dinner and breakfast, but not enough alcohol. Bring them with you before you get on the bus to Kuamoto. Just keep it in the fridge. You will thank me for this after hot spring begging for icy cold beer (they do have a small selction of drinks).

2. If you are coming from regions with alot of hot spices ( Mexico, Sichuan of China, Korea, India etc) i recommend you to take an spicy instant noodle with you. The food is excellent but they are all so 'smooth'.

We stayed in this ryokan one night and without dinners and breakfast. It's clean place, like all places in Japan, but is looks like little bit old fashion place. There are many onsens, one outside and 5 private, and it's nice. All onsen are open 24 hours. But beyond the onsen the place not very recommend. The staff very kindly and the room big but all things in old style. I had the fell like is very old and old fashion place;)

I have stayed in several ryokan in my previous trip to Japan and this is by far my favourite. It overlooks a river and the place is sparkling clean. Room is big for our party of 5! There are 6 private Onsen / family bath who we enjoyed. There absolutely no need to look for attached bathroom. The outdoor Onsen has a very nice setting. The Onsen street has some nice little shops. There are limited food options so best to book with breakfast and dinner which was of very high quality and served in private room. We enjoyed so much we wanted to stay an extra night but they were fully booked. Kurosawa Onsen area is a little hard to get to without a car though. Pricing in this area is a little steep but worth the price. I highly recommend this ryokan if you are undecided which one to book in this area.

We stayed for two nights at Kurokawa area. At the second night we came to Yamabiko. Our luggage was delivered to Yamabiko by our previous hotel so we walked along the main street and reached Yamabiko's rear door around 3pm. The reception was surprised to see us and was not ready to give a warm greeting. So we waited at the lobby for some time until we were shown the room.

We had a double room for 4 adults and 1 infant, which is very big. The dinner and breakfast was such a feast that we couldn't eat anything else! It is not only plenty but also very delicious. We love the view from the window which you see mountains and the river. The main outdoor bath area isn't as big as seen in the picture, which was the main reason that we booked this hotel. So it is a little disappointment. But they have 6 small indoor bath rooms which we enjoyed a lot with our family.

What impressed me the most is their care for the infant. Although they charged the baby's stay (baby requires no extra bedding or food), they provided a lot of items that you might need to travel with baby, including baby chair, which you can take to the bath area, baby shower items, yukata, they even prepared one double bed with baby's pillow in the middle! We are grateful for their care and details.

Centrally located in Kurokawa Onsen Town, Yamabiko Ryokan offers a large rotenburo, open to the public, and about eight private Onsen baths, which are available to be used by couples, as the doors can be locked. Our room for our recent three night stay was right over the river, and was very spacious, airy, and light-filled, a very lovely suite. Staff were very courteous, helpful, and friendl, and the housekeeping was excellent. Dinners were Kaiseki style, featuring multiple courses of delicious food. Breakfasts were also very substantial and delicious. This is a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxing stay in an Onsen Ryokan, while hiking on paths around the surrounding mountains!
