As we drove in for the first time there was almost a welcoming commitee out the front in expectation of our arrival and they all welcomed us by name! We had 3 people fussing around as I was parking and unloading the car and several of the friendly staff gravitated towards my children to help and entertain them. We feld so comfortable, welcome and at ease. It was almost as though we were family!
The Yamabiko Ryokan is just beautiful. We had a huge Japanese style room with lovely river views (as requested) from every window and the delicious Kaiseki meals were served in private Japanese style rooms in the main building over a covered bridge across the river.
My family are uncomfortable bathing in an onsen in public but that was not a problem here at Yamabiko as there are 6 private onsens (all in the building) which are easily accessible and used on a 'first come first serve basis'. We tried 4 of the private onsens and each one was individually just stunning, right next to the river. Having never tried one before - my children just love onsen now!
Only stayed 1 night and yes it was expensive ~AUD$1200/night for a young family of 4 but we planned for this expense months ahead and enjoyed every minute. Would definitely return. When we left the children almost felt that they were leaving family behind!
We stayed in the Kikyou (the "Bellflower") room, an airy, spacious and spotlessly clean tatami room - but the oddest thing to us was that there is no shower/bathroom. There is a toilet (plus sink/vanity) but since they expect you to wash yourself at one of their eight onsen they didn't see the need to install individual bathrooms in their guestrooms. Still, it was weird for us.
There are 2 communal onsen here (male and female) and six "family" onsen where you can lock the door and use them privately on your own or with your family on a first come first serve basis.
We only had time to sample three family onsens and they were all gorgeous. We also found time to play a couple rounds of ping pong terribly - though it was a lot of fun.
Two meals (dinner and breakfast) were provided and as kaiseki dinners go, this was top-rated. At the price of AUD$450 for two people, this was easily the most expensive accommodation for us in Japan this trip, but the whole experience was wonderful and we enjoyed ourselves very much.
Things to consider before choosing this Onsen (hot spring)
1. Do you really enjoy Onsen? The place ( Kuamoto) is a remote onsen town, 3 hours journey from Kukuoka where you will not have anything much to do. If you are going there, choose to stay max 2.5 days unless you have HUGE love for hot spring. ( i stayed there for 1.5 days)
2. They provide very traditional fine Japanese dining and breakfast with high level of excellency BUT warning to ppl from USA, alot of Japanese food might be 'slimy' for you: Mochi, Japanese Pudding, Tofu etc. However the quality of food is undoubtfully amazing with alot of care. You will FEEL the care from the service they provide. I can guarantee that.
3. No problem even if you have tattoos.
There are 2 public outdoor Onsen and about 7 indoor private Onsen rooms ( approximately usable for max 4 ppl at once) you can enjoy. I did personally asked them if tattoo can be an issue and the answer was no. ( the guy at the front did say "yes" but that was due to his lack of English :p )
So if you choose to stay at this Ryokan, there are things to do before visiting Japan
1. Make an appointment at their website to pick you up at the bus stop. When you contact them, they will ask you when you arrive there at Kuamoto Onsen station.
2. You MUST arrange the bus from Fukuoka to Kuamoto (the ryokan place).
If you havent made the reservation, bring your passport and make one at Tenjin bus station. (Try Hakata bus station too but i am not sure with this one)
Before visiting Kuamoto
1. They provide dinner and breakfast, but not enough alcohol. Bring them with you before you get on the bus to Kuamoto. Just keep it in the fridge. You will thank me for this after hot spring begging for icy cold beer (they do have a small selction of drinks).
2. If you are coming from regions with alot of hot spices ( Mexico, Sichuan of China, Korea, India etc) i recommend you to take an spicy instant noodle with you. The food is excellent but they are all so 'smooth'.
We had a double room for 4 adults and 1 infant, which is very big. The dinner and breakfast was such a feast that we couldn't eat anything else! It is not only plenty but also very delicious. We love the view from the window which you see mountains and the river. The main outdoor bath area isn't as big as seen in the picture, which was the main reason that we booked this hotel. So it is a little disappointment. But they have 6 small indoor bath rooms which we enjoyed a lot with our family.
What impressed me the most is their care for the infant. Although they charged the baby's stay (baby requires no extra bedding or food), they provided a lot of items that you might need to travel with baby, including baby chair, which you can take to the bath area, baby shower items, yukata, they even prepared one double bed with baby's pillow in the middle! We are grateful for their care and details.
"Had a room near to the river; river sound is apparent but not noisy especially when the are closed."Read full review
