We chose this hotel as we read great reviews about the view and food and we were not disappointed at all. The room provided us 'front seat' view of Mt Fuji. When we planned to stay here for 3 days, I was worried that there was not enough to but there were lots to see and do around the area if you appreciate nature - walks, caves etc. Best way to explore is to rent a car. We drove here from the airport and with an English speaking GPS, it was really easy.

There are 2 onsens here - one public which you can visit anytime and another private which you need to book in advance especially for mornings and evenings slots. The view from the private onsen is spectacular too especially at sunset, so do plan and book early.

The room is traditional Japanese style room with tatamis, futon and a sitting area. What I love most is the little balcony with sofa seats where you can sit and enjoy the view while reading a book or have a beer. However, do note that since it is a traditional ryokan, the bathroom is very traditional too - clean but rustic. They do provide shampoo but if you are particular about your toiletries, do bring your own. Yukatas are provided to wear around the hotel, yes you can wear it for dinner too.

Food here was really good. I love variety and I was not disappointed as shown on pictures below. But be sure to indicate that you want a full board meal ( which inclde breakfast and dinner) when you book. They do not prepare extra portions so if you change your mind when you arrive at the property, they would not have anything for you on the day itself

It is also good to learn a few basic Japanese phrases as there is only 1 person in this hotel that understands limited English but everyone here are very friendly and helpful. Overall we had a wonderful time and would like to thank Saki-san for taking great care of us! Love it!!!

The staff were friendly, welcoming and knew enough english for us to get by. We had a traditional double room with a view of the mountain. There was hot tea and biscuits waiting for us in the room on arrival, and we were able to slip our legs under the table with its heated blanket - very nice on a cold day.

We opted for the meals included option, which was well worth it as both breakfast and dinner were works of art. There many dishes, all beautifully presented. They had no problem catering for my vegetarian needs and mine was just as fabulous as my travelling companions. Breakfast was also a big deal.

The room was huge; traditional mats as flooring. While we were eating they made up the beds for us. We were provided with traditional yakuta robes, which we wore to go and use the hot tub. I also made use of the bath tub that was in the ensuite.

There are open air hot tubs on the roof, use of which is included in the room price - you need to book your time slot. We opted for a late evening soak, but if you did it during daylight you can soak while viewing the mountain.

I personally found the decor a bit old fashioned (clean and well presented), though my travelling companion just viewed it as traditional Japanese. By Japanese standards this hotel is good value for money, the views and food are fantastic.

Location:
The hotel is situated on Shoji lake, which is the least touristy of the lakes. It was quiet and had fantastic views of the mountain. We were there for only one night so enjoyed walking around the lake, and walking up a nearby hiking path to a spectacular viewpoint. If you are there longer then getting around would be a problem without your own transport. Being able to see the mountain from our window was amazing.

We got a bus from Shinjuku in Tokyo to Kawaguchi station - about 2 hours. These are frequent and cost 1700yen each way. When we arrived at 11.45am we found that the next bus to Shoji lake was not until 2.33pm. Buses were not very frequent, maybe because it was out of season. We left luggage in storage lockers (600yen) and explored the town and Kawaguachi lake while waiting. The bus from to Shoji cost 1080 yen for a single journey - collect a ticket on your way in, then the screen tells you how much to pay when you get off. If stopped at the front door of the hotel. When we wanted to leave the bus times were inconvenient; we would have had to leave very early, or catch a bus from other side of lake - 30min walk. The hotel staff volunteered to drive us to that stop free of charge, thus we were able to spend the morning hiking to a viewpoint.

My wife and I spent the first night of a 4-night Fuji 5 Lakes tour at Yamadaya hotel on 2016/4/25. The reasons why we chose this hotel are: 1) Every uest room has the magnificent view of Mount Fuji in the back, her parasitic cone of Mount Omura (大室山1486m) in the front, and their mirrored image in the Shoji Lake, just like a mother embracing her child 「子抱き富士」. 2) Hotel is close to the venue of Shibazakura Festival. 3) Fujikyu bus stop is right in front of the hotel.

The rating 5 is valid for this 3-star hotel. If this is a 4-star hotel, I would only give 4 because it is little bit dated. The hotel is kept very clean. The service of this family-owned hotel is great. The traditional Japanese style breakfast and dinner are well prepared and very delicious. We would recommend to reserve a window side table and enjoy the scenic view while having an early dinner around 6pm.

In addition to public open air onsen, hotel guests could also reserve a free 30-minute from one of the two private open air bath. You can immerse yourselves in a sense of happiness while taking the open air onsen bath and enjoying the scenic view of Mount Fuji with the one you love.

To get to this hotel by bus, one could either buy the ¥1500 2-day pass valid for the north-wast 4 lakes of Kawaguchiko, Saiko, Shojiko and Motosuko (For more information, visit the Japanese Website), or buy the ¥2550 2-day Fujigoko passport, which also includes the south-west area of the Yamanakako, Oshino Hakkai, and free train ride between Kawaguchiko station and Shimo-Yoshida Station for the famous red pagoda (For more information, visit the Japanese website). The information of these two 2-day pass is not available in the official English website. To get to the Shibazakura Festival from this hotel, you could take the bus line from Kawaguchiko station to Fujinomiya/Shin-Fiji station. However, you need to pay the fare between Motosuko and Shibazakura Festival site, which is not covered by the 2-day pass.

My wife and I would definitely come back to this reasonably priced hotel with gorgeous view.

Impressive food, Great View of Mt. Fuji and lake, and Open Air Onsen

This traditional Japanese hotel (Ryokan) appears to be run by a family of three generations. It is located right by Lake Shojiko, which is said to be offering the best view of Mt. Fuji.

How to get there: The hotel is small and at an isolated location. If you don’t have a car, you should arrive at the transportation hubs such as Kawaguchiko Station or Fujisan Station early in the day. After around 5pm, there will be no bus and you will have to take a taxi which will cost a fortune. I took the bus from Kawaguchiko Station bound for Motosu Lake, it cost me around JPY1100 to get to the hotel. To reception closes at 6pm, that’s another reason why you should arrive early.

However, the hotel is really worth the effort and cost for the transportation. The dinner (kaiseki-ryori) is a Japanese style feast to both the mouth and eyes. The sashimi is extremely fresh. Kaiseki-ryori is said to be representing the paramount of the Japanese art of food so it is definitely worth trying at least once. The breakfast is lovely as well. The Japanese style room is very clean, with tatami floor and view of the lake and Mt. Fuji. The tea table and chairs by the window offers a great place to drink some tea of sake while appreciating Mt. Fuji. At night, you could see the moon in the clear sky, and the moon river glittering in the lake, with Mt. Fuji as the background. The open air onsen on the fourth floor could be booked for private use for up to 30 minutes.

The family members who run the hotel are very friendly. One of them, a gentleman, speaks good English. He was very kind and drove me and other guests to Lake Motosu the next morning. When we finished dinner at around 8pm, I could see the staffs still working hard in the kitchen doing cleaning. I really wanted to thank them for working so hard to make my stay there so comfortable and pleasant. I had great experience at this lovely hotel, and will hope to come back again for a longer stay.

Stayed for 2 nights
1. Room is well-kept and comfortable.
2. Great view
3. Supply of hot thermal flask, twice a day.
4. Gorgeous presentation of meal and lip-smackingly good traditional Japanese spread for breakfast and dinner. After the first dinner, it had me looked forward to the next kaiseki meal.
5. The private onsen needs to be reserved at half hour slots. Not to be missed!

1. My ryokan does not come with a shower area only toilet.
2. No hot water at the sink so this can be pretty freezing during cold weather.
3. Inconvenient. Although there is a bus stop just outside the hotel, location is about 45 mins bus ride to the train station and there are designated bus timings.

Overall, it is a pleasant and interesting experience.

I stayed there with my husband for just a Saturday night get away. The hotel is quite far from Kawaguchiko station (about 50mins by public bus) and the bus only runs about 5 times per day up til early evening 5ish and first departure is just before 11am. Cost was 1120 yen each way. (Our bus returning was about 30 minutes late). Although quite a long ride, the view is well worth the trip. Right from our room balcony, we had a clear view of the entire Mt. Fuji with the river reflection in front of it. The ryokan is very old and quite run down, but kept clean. There is a private bath that you can book for 30mins which has the same view of the mountain. There is also a public bath on the first floor, but I did not use the facility. We booked the dinner banquet and breakfast ahead of time and was satisfied with both meals. (Note that the breakfast is not your typical western breakfast- it was rice and salmon). There is no wifi in the rooms and you must have a local Japanese service provider email address to gain access in the lobby. This turned out to be a positive for us, because we went to bed at 8:30pm! and was able to get up at before 5am to see the sunrise. The place seem to be run by a family (mother, father, daughter and grandfather), with a couple of hired help. The daughter spoke English well and everyone was very friendly. Whilst the room price we paid was relatively high, it was about the same as other ryokans around the lake. The only negative is that smoking was allowed in the lobby and restaurant.

I was looking for a hotel near Kawaguchiko with Mt. Fuji view, onsen and good food at a reasonable price - I think Yamadaya Hotel meets all these requirements.

We arrived at the hotel on 20 May and was disappointed when the sky was cloudy with no sight of Mt. Fuji. We thought of leaving the next day but the owner promised that the next day, sky would be clear and we would be able to see Mt. Fuji from our room. We decided to take his advice. Indeed, the next day, we were so excited to be able to see Mt. Fuji as the backdrop of Shojiko lake.

Food here is delicious and lots of variety. The young lady staff who serves us at the restaurant is very friendly and caring. She always brings a kettle of cold water for us to replenish our water bottles.

When we leave, the driver sent us to the nearest bus stop so that we could continue our journery.

Good location with the bus stop right in front of the hotel. Self drive is good, free parking. Family run with good service though the place is a little bit dated. Nostalgic experience for a 3 nights stay here. Very calm and serene with Mt Fuji right in front of you. It has a lift that's very important, no need to climb stairs with heavy luggage.

Had an unblocked full view of Mount Fuji from the room and Lake Shoji. Woke up and caught the sunrise from the comfort of the room.

Room was a basic ryokan, do not expect much but the small balcony overseeing the lake and mountain was a nice touch.

Dinner and breakfast were above average and true to the standard expected of traditional ryokans. There's parking space if you are driving, worth 1-2 nights' stay for R&R. There's onsen (public & private) if you are interested.
