Detailed Reviews
Like much of the rest of the world my wife and I had been without a vacation for some time. While we would normally take a winter trip South, we were forced to look within Canada for another option due to covid regulations.
After some research we decided to try Vancouver Island. As an avid golfer, I wanted a place that would give me a chance to play. I was thoroughly impressed by our experience at the Westin Bear Mountain. As a Marriott Bonvoy gold member I was upgraded to a top floor room with an amazing view of the surrounding landscape. My wife and I were sold on this property the minute we stepped out onto our balcony.
Everyone we spoke to was very friendly and accommodating. The front desk staff especially were great and happy to help in any way. I can't fathom how anyone would take issue with the service at this property. You're either too demanding or maybe a bad attitude doesn't get you the same positive feedback.
The rooms were super clean and comfortable. Very nice size and we loved having a balcony. As I said, the views are amazing and we loved every minute. There were sanitizing stations all over the place and everyone was following covid protocols. We felt very safe and appreciated the cleanliness of the hotel.
Some things to be aware of so that your expectations aren't unrealistic. We are still in the midst of a pandemic, so of course some services/things will be limited. You have to book your time in the hot tub to limit the people so you should book that well in advance. Dining options are also a bit limited so either be prepared for a smaller menu or order from someplace like Skipthedishes. You also have to request your room to be cleaned in advance. This is common sense, it's surprising people actually complain about this. It can be annoying sure, but it is the reality we find ourselves in. When the pandemic is over I'm sure we will be back to normal procedure.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Westin bear Mountain and would certainly return. Please be realistic. We are still in a pandemic and not everything will be available as we are accustomed to. When the resort is back to normal operations following this, I can't imagine how great it would be. We had a fabulous time despite any limitations. The service is excellent, it's clean and the setting is beautiful. Thank you to the staff for your hard work in challenging times and we look forward to a return in the near future.

I was at Amatista for the first time a few weeks ago after visiting Sante Spa many times in the past. I had heard there were extensive renovations and have to say I could not have been more disappointed. The women’s change room remains “gang” change style, never have I encountered this group change situation set up at an upper scale spa. The showers are the same with ill fitting plastic shower curtains with no private changing space in them, just hop out into another group style area when done. One private changing room for the entire area where a small bathroom once was, quite unbelievable really.
Using COVID as an excuse for the completely deprived lounge area situation was also puzzling. Warm bottles of water (being placed on ice in the summer would have been a simple, inexpensive, thoughtful, and much appreciated touch) and that’s it, does not approach a luxury spa day in my experience. Maybe chilled high-end waters, even some different flavours, and some individually wrapped snacks (organic trail mix, dark chocolate, organic apples for example) would have enhanced the experience.
Back to the spa itself. It looks like the mineral pool got a much-needed scrub but that was about it. Same is true of the sauna and steam room but both (out of use due to the pandemic) were still dated, unclean feeling, and unwelcoming.
I have recently been to Tigh Na Mara and Kingfisher Spas, whoever is managing Amatista would be well-advised to pay them a visit. They offer a much more thoughtful, generous, and pampering spa experience by a giant margin (although your bathrobes rock and definitely win in that category). Happily my masseuse, Katie, was wonderful and saved the day.
I was truly hoping for something a little more upscale for our Bear Mountain community. At the moment, I sadly won’t be recommending your spa to friends or family.

Spent two days at the Westin Bear Mountain post snowstorm and it was quite cloudy with zero view. Not their fault, but just an observation that it is high on the mountain and subject to clouds and fog, so if you are looking for good views, it is not guaranteed.
This being said, the service in the hotel was fantastic. Front desk staff were efficient, personable and pleasant-not a single negative point encountered on this front. The hotel is clean and welcoming in the lobby area. We were upgraded to a view room (no view with the fog though) and it was large and easy to live in. Kitchen was fully stocked with everything you could want or need. Bed was comfortable and I liked the fact that there were windows that opened so that you could sleep with fresh air. The room was clean, but we did find pills under the bed...a little concerning given that people travel with children and children put things in their mouths. I suspect that the vacuuming cold have been a bit better in this regard.
Parking....many people comment on the parking. Yes, there is a reserved lot closest to the lobby, but really, the open parking is just as close and it is not a long walk, so I'm not sure what folks are complaining about.
All in all a good stay (we love Westin) and would consider it again if in the neighbourhood.

My husband had to go from mid island to Victoria for work for a few days. After a long few months of being at home we decided to make it a family trip. I called and was helped by a very friendly booking agent who helped me select a room and told me about the changes I needed to know regarding Covid - the pool being closed, restaurant changes, having to pre order breakfast the day before.....
We arrived and it is a lovely hotel. The 2 bedroom suite was very nice, it suited our family well. When I requested to have our room serviced (it doesn't take long for a hotel room to become a mess with 4 kids and a dog!) I was surprised and disappointed to hear that housekeepers were not entering rooms to clean. When I expressed this disappointment the desk clerk (Stacey/Tracey?) told me that the info was on their website. When I said I had called to book and was not told, I was given a "well, it is Westin policy" answer. They said linens/garbages/towels would be exchanged outside the room. I am not sure how leaving garbage bins overflowing with food waste, diapers, and rubbish, dirty linens and towels in the hall were safer measures for hotel guests than cleaners going into the rooms. I know I did not appreciate passing others dirty dishes left out of their rooms for 16+ hours.
They were kind enough to leave a bottle of bathroom cleaner, all purpose cleaner, a pile of rags, and a vacuum in our room. so I could do my own cleaning.
This may seem trivial to some, but as a mother of 4, I was so looking forward to having a little break, but instead I was having to vacuum, change linens, and do all the cleaning myself. A hotel room becomes very 'lived in' with such a large family very quickly. All while paying hundreds of dollars a night for this 2 bedroom suite. I left my 'Break" feeling more worn out than I started, probably because I was so excited to have a bit of a break and definitely felt like I didn't get it.
I will add, I also asked why I was paying a pet fee since no one was going in to clean up or do any extra vacuuming during the 5 days we stayed there We were told it was for the extra deep cleaning they were going to do when we leaved. I asked what additional cleaning they would do because we had a dog, that they would not do with the deep cleaning sanitization they claimed they do upon every guest departing due to Covid They could not answer me, but did give me a break and only charge a pet fee for one room, not our two rooms.
TO sum up, a pretty hotel, and one front desk staff was super helpful, but the other (stacey or tracey) was very unhelpful and unpleasant. If you are a mother looking for a break of not having ti wipe up every tooth paste spill, and change every soiled linen, then do not book here.

We arrived at Bear Mountain Westin after spending a glorious week at a resort in Tofino where every precaution was taken to keep us safe during the pandemic.
Our every need was met, however.
Then we arrived at Bear Mountain Westin Resort.
We are very sorry we wasted our money.
Reception staff were not wearing masks, despite there being no barrier over the desk.
The notices in the elevator to limit two people to an elevator disappeared the first day, and were not replaced.
Most of the serving and bar staff wore their masks over their chins, but breathed on the food and drink.
Despite the lack of concern for safety, the pandemic has been used as an excuse to withdraw services like daily coffee supplies being topped up, concierge service, and even food before 10 am on weekends or 11am during the week. No breakfast. No coffee. We were told we could order a breakfast to pick up, as long as it was ordered by 7:30 pm the night before, but when we went to collect our order, they hadn’t heard of us.
If you want a cup of coffee, walk down the street to the market, I was told cheerfully, by a staff member.
Nightly prices remain high, however.
All we got was a room. The rooms on both sides of the hotel are dark because of the deep balconies, but artificial light isn’t helpful, as the bulbs are energy saving.
Don’t plan to read.
Movies and music are available on the large screen TVs, for a price.
My husband came here for the golf.
He was given a cart. With no score pad, pencil, water or towel. Still full price, though. And no starter no acknowledgement of his start or finish.
I guess, with a pandemic, you don’t need to be helpful.
Today, only one golf course is open, apparently for “maintenance”. In July.
It’s really a shame. The hotel has a spectacular view. It could be a success with the right management.
One positive note; the young women serving in the lounge were extremely pleasant and efficient. Perhaps they should be the managers.

Once known for excellence, the hotel and restaurant has rapidly declined in quality. Last stay I brought business partners and discovered at checkin that massive changes were made by a new owner. This reduces options on rooms size and space, no access to the original Fairway suite properties. Dinner at Bella was a solid 2 star, rib steak was nothing more than a luke warm slice of prime ribroast grilled to look like steak. Nobody could find the keys to access the wine cellar and eventually when they did bring the wine our dinner was half over. Annoyingly, free parking spaces have been reduced significantly, with the premium spaces close to the hotel only available for a fee.

My family stayed at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort for 4 nights in August. Pandemic caused most resort service to be suspended, but this didn’t prevent them from charging us ; $18/night resort fee which seemed like a cash grab, frankly. We booked a nice 1 br suite but as they were constructing a new ballroom, construction noises began at 7 am weekdays. We requested and gladly moved to a corner suite which was much quieter. Rooms were huge, wonderful views and amenities. Now that the Bear Mountain parkway is completed, it is a much easier drive to downtown. Front desk staff were top notch, especially Bella, Sean and Tracy. Asha at the restaurant provided top level service and fine breakfast. All in all, this resort was quite good. They lose points for having no resort amenities at this point and still having the audacity of charging guests a “resort fee,” however.

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the rooms and beds are super comfortable. We stay there every summer and really miss the pool and the laundry facilities. You can now go to the pool and gym beside the hotel for a fee ($45 for a day, $100 for 3 days or $150 for 5 days). The rooms with full kitchens also seem to have less and less supplies available, but generally have everything you need. The restaurant and conference renovations are very modern and so many different, comfy and unique chairs! Assuming they will be renovating the lobby area to match the rest of the renovations. The coffee shop nearby is great with some basic grocery items if you need them for your room. Overall, it's always a great stay. Please bring back the laundry facilities for guests!

We had not been to the hotel in several years. It is now part of Marriott. We had to work so we could not play golf, but there are two courses—mountain and valley, and everyone we talked to loved playing there.
The hotel has been remodeled on the floor where you check in. The restaurant is spacious, has a great view, has a great bar, and has very comfortable seating. The furniture in the lobby is very comfortable—mainly terrific couches, and for cooler weather, there are blankets to use on the couches.
We had breakfast there the two mornings that we were were booked. I wish they had oatmeal, but the food was delicious, and the staff is very accommodating to change things if the order is not quite right. I ordered the granola dish, and was concerned about the fruit bowl mixture so was able to have a banana instead. My husband enjoyed his smoothie. We ate dinner there one evening, and both of us had fish. He had salmon and I had halibut. They were perfectly cooked. We also ordered the vegetable bowl to share, and were happy with the amount of vegetables and selection that included broccoli, and carrots. We checked the menu on-line, but you have to go to the restaurant to see the menu because the on-line menu is not updated.
The two things we found frustrating is that although our room had a kitchen, coffee was not supplied and my husband had to go to the front desk to get it first thing in the morning. And we were very surprised there was not a gym. Previously we could use the facility that is less than a 5 minute walk. When we checked, we found out it is not available to guests, and for day the cost is $45.00. We took long walks when we got up. Our monthly cost at home is not much more than that.
We will definitely return.

It has a spectacular view! We were so excited to stay at this Westin property and knew we were in for a weekend at a higher end luxury property. The front desk staff who greeted us were friendly and knowledgeable and just lovely to speak with.
This is where everything then turned around. One elevator was broken and then both elevators broke. Taking the stairs lead us to a construction site that required an escort to leave. Sitting on our gorgeous balcony overlooking the mountains and golf course should have been a perfect picture moment until the window washers who were working below started to speak profanities non stop while working which required our family to go back to our room.
The Express Service button on the phone resulted in 4 or 5 attempts until someone picked up and then needed to wait a very long time including multiple follow up calls before the towels arrived. Not sure I would call this Express.
Don’t expect a typical Westin experience. This is more like a decent Holiday Inn with an amazing view. This is a very average hotel. Lots of other options near by at a significantly reduced price. Definitely not worth what they are charging for a very average room with outstanding views.
BTW - Calling and leaving a message for the General Manager was pointless. As of the writing of this, we are still waiting for his return call. I shouldn’t be surprised. This is inline with the Express Service button in the rooms. No one responds:)

I phoned them for you
Yes, they have a shuttle that goes downtown, limited hours and $20. I apologize as I did not ask if that was one way or return
2 restaurants in the hotel...very good but high end. Jacks is next door...very good food and great prices. Down the hill 15 mins drive into Langford there are many great places to eat. :)
We didn't use the pool but you have to use your room key to access the pool area. So it's limited to the hotel guests only.
I not sure about a shuttle. But I did see a public bus. Up the road from the hotel.
Don’t forget Victoria has great public transportation. It will be a couple of transfers but you will get more scenery. And not have to drive in the gridlock. The highway is close enough for you to drive. To Buchart Gardens. It is not complicated to get to.
