Carlisle Bay Antigua offers a serene beach and a friendly atmosphere that many guests cherish, coupled with a diverse range of dining options and activities. However, some travelers have raised concerns about the hotel's value for money, highlighting unexpected charges. While the staff's attentiveness is often commended, inconsistencies in service and room maintenance are noted. The well-kept grounds and cleanliness receive high marks, yet reviewers suggest that the rooms and certain areas could benefit from modernization. Although the location is praised for its beauty, its remoteness may deter those seeking nearby attractions.

We booked this trip as an “end of maternity leave” treat for me and so that we could enjoy our first holiday with our baby boy (9 months) somewhere truly relaxing. Carlisle Bay could not have been a better choice. We and the couple we were travelling with were both upgraded to suites on the beach with separate rooms for the babies, which was a fantastic start. The food was divine - fresh, well cooked, and creative - and the cocktails and rosé were free flowing. Pleasingly, there were no nasty surprises on the bill (we were on the All Inclusive package - which is 100% worth it because the food is not cheap!) Sharon from Kids Club babysat our boy most evenings, which meant we could really enjoy the place. The staff could not have been more helpful - it was just such a great holiday.
The only two things that were a slight dampener were the sandflies (which I appreciate are part of the deal in that part of the world - and the hotel was gracious enough to supply us all with bug repellent!) and the arrival of large corporate group whose presence somewhat dominated whichever part of the hotel they were in. Otherwise, cannot complain!

Just finished a wonderful week in Antigua. Carlisle Bay sits on a beautiful secluded beach. They offer some non-motorized sports activities, which is very nice . They provide floats that are secured in the water, which are lovely to lay on and relax in the sun during the day . They provide you with large bottles of water daily in your room that you can take to the beach, which is nice, if you do have a water bottle, they have refill stations as well. There’s a mini fridge in the room which most of it is complementary even a few snacks and chocolates.

Be aware to get up early and go catch your spot on the beach as everybody does that. Especially if you want to oceanfront seating. Rooms are excessively large and well appointed. Decorated beautifully and very clean. Views of the ocean are from almost every room. Food is very good, service is great. Was very happy overall with our stay.

There are a few things we felt that could have been improved. We wish we were told upfront about the three floors of accommodations as we were put on the third floor. I just finished physical therapy for hip bursitis and was put on the third floor and had a difficult time going up three flights of stairs for a whole week with no elevator. We had to ask a few times for things like bath mats for the bathroom, shower gel, things that have should’ve been looked at when housekeeping came. The lighting on the grounds at night away from the main area of the hotel is limited and very difficult to see. We were glad we had our flashlights on our phone to help us. We felt it was a little dangerous and easily could trip if you weren’t really paying attention.

There was basically no service on the beach. Which was a bit of a disappointment. It’s not like nobody came by, but it was not very often and you really had to search somebody down. For a five star hotel, the linens, bath towels, and bed were not comfortable. The bed was like sleeping on a stack of books. I had to request feather pillows because the pillows were hard too. The towels were scratchy, and the linens were not fine linens that you would expect at a hotel of this caliber.

They coordinate your pick up and departure arrangements but do be aware they charge you $75 each direction which they do not tell you upfront. Also, they arranged for taxis if you want to go off premise to different restaurants for dinner. This is a very nice service and is charged to your room. The tip for the driver is not included . The taxis can be quite expensive.

The most beautiful beach and the best swimming on the island in my view as so calm with clear turquoise waters. Snorkelling right from beach saw puffa fish, turtles and was safe for kids to do. I would highly recommend the two bedroom ground floor onto beach as you literally step from your terrace onto the beach and into the sea! The rooms are nice not 5 star furniture and curtains are looking very old but everything worked well. Spa and tennis plus paddle tennis courts were great. I would say the only downside of the hotel is the food (apart from East which was delicious Asian food) and service a real let down. We sometimes waited 40 mins for meals which is not fun with hungry kids. I sent my food on Christmas Day back as the fish was so salty I couldn’t eat it and the soup was revolting and the cost extortionate. The head of catering needs to have a good look at his menus as both indigo and ottima could easily be improved and the quality of the meat! However breakfast was amazing each day. Loved the free tea with cakes each day we looked forward to it! Kids club caters very well I would say up to 8 years old above this there is nothing for teens to do apart from play tennis. Be aware like most 5 star Caribbean hotels food and drink is expensive 13 dollars for a glass of wine or cocktail and even water is expensive so even though we were half board we still had a £2500 bill at end and I had one cocktail a night!

This was a real mixed bag of a stay. The stunning location was affected by some odd service failings and some genuinely worrying billing practices.

Firstly, Carlisle Bay the area is stunning. A perfect Caribbean beach surrounded by pretty pristine nature on the more secluded south side of the island of Antigua. The pavilions are lovely heritage-looking wooden buildings and the buildings holding the suites are tastefully designed. However, quite a lot of the furniture is very tired looking with scrapes and quite outdated. We had a beach suite, which was large and nicely laid out, but it did look tired.

On to the service. This was very hit and miss. The people in the restaurants were friendly and the food was largely a good standard. But, the room servicing was so hit and miss… one day you would have your coffee cups taken away, but not replaced. The next, you would not have any shower gels left and would have to call and ask for some. Some days the minibar would not be refilled. Not bad on its own but a long list of these things starts to get irritating.

There was also bizarre behaviours that had obviously been trained into the staff as they all did it. If you passed a member of staff on the paths coming the other way, they would stop walking about 10/15 metres in front of you and stand awkwardly smiling at you as you walked past. This was extremely awkward and I really felt sorry for the staff as it was demeaning to them in my opinion.

The worst example was the facilities people. Our patio doors were broken on one side which meant that when you closed the other side it would not lock, leaving the room unsecure. The facilities people came and spoke to us like idiots, saying we just needed to hold the other side shut in order to lock. But really the bolts on the opposite side were broken, causing the problem. They said they would come the following day to fix the broken side but never turned up. The lock on the broken side was literally HANGING OFF. There were other things not working.

Generally, the people were lovely.

The billing issues were the worst part. Bottles of wine appearing on the bill when we only had a glass (glasses are included in all inclusive, but not bottles). They also charged us a $70 charity charge twice in the final bill. We had to ask for this to be removed (only the incorrect one). They urge you to have a bottle of water at the beginning of every meal, but we were only informed mid way through the holiday that this was all billed (they don’t offer you any other water option so this should not be billed in my view). We left feeling that we were being taken advantage of. The reception staff didn’t show any surprise at these things (even the incorrect charges) and there was a disinterested arrogance displayed when we challenged them on incorrect charges.

Sadly, I’m not sure I would go back.

Arrival / check in was slick. Kids given fish food to feed the fish outside, keeping them entertained, adults given a refreshing drink and towel.

We had a beach terrace suite and my goodness was it worth the extra money, you are on the sand, my cup of tea on the balcony each morning, watching the kids play in the calm clear water was bliss. Rooms were cleaned twice daily, they worked around your schedule. One day my son spilled a drink on his favourite pillow (comforter) and they whisked away the pillow and case and had it back to us before his bedtime.

Food was wonderful. The all inclusive is exactly that, all inclusive. No set menus or excluded restaurants, it was truly all inclusive. Fruit smoothies delivered to your lounger each morning, the cocktails were freshly mixed using good quality ingredients, no sugar syrup machines in sight. The wine on offer was good quality and enjoyable. The children were able to wander down to the bar and order themselves a drink or snack with the barman high fiving them and making them feel special. The menu in the main restaurant changed regularly and the Italian and Asian restaurants were also brilliant. Friday night at the firepit jetty grill was fabulous, drinking cocktails under the stars listening to live music, it couldn't get any better.

The beach is well maintained with soft sand. The water beautifully clear and perfect for snorkelling. The kids club is excellent with a variety of activities including boat trips and a trip to sting ray city! The watersports staff are also fantastic, friendly and accommodating.

The resort is laid back and relaxed but is tasteful and classy throughout. The staff learn your names and make you feel special, always greeting you with a smile, nothing is too much trouble. The kids roamed freely around the resort and felt very safe.

The very few downsides:
The pool has no shallow end and for a hotel that focuses on being great for families this is a real negative.
There is no entertainment in the evenings which makes it very quiet. We were not expecting tasteless karaoke and booming music but some live steel bands or an occasional beach show would be a great addition.

We have booked to come back in October 2023 it was so good!

The Hotel most of the ingredients to be the best Hotel on the Island unfortunately at present it is living of its past reputation. The management is virtually non existent, the rooms desperately need a refurbishment as do the public areas. Breakfast is a typical example the staff are mostly brilliant but the indigo restaraunt is full of tatty chairs and tables, a pastry unit that looks like it was found in a skip and a toaster that belongs in a skip. Simple things like covering the sun beds on a night time ( most are dirty and mouldy) would go a long way to showing the Management are looking after the customer. I note the General Manager never answers any of the issues raised and instead just ask you to E Mail him direct.

We have met a number of frequently returning guests and all of them without hesitation say they will not return again until the Hotel is upgraded. A few further points the Management might want to address are the Children’s Policy and the dress codes if it wants to return to the status the Hotel once had.

My wife and I have just returned from a 10 day holiday at The Carlisle Bay. Whilst we have been to Antigua before this was a first at this hotel. We were not disappointed . We had a comfortable and well appointed room on the top floor of a block to the east end of the resort enjoying a balcony with a sea view. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. We were 'fed and watered' to a high standard in each of the 4 restaurants. This south facing resort sits on an attractive sandy bay with very safe swimming. If you are interested in sailing the bay enjoys excellent ( often gusty ) breezes which make for exciting Hobie Cat sailing. If there was a shortcoming it was the hotel's location; it is quite a long way from civilisation so if you wish to visit (say) English Harbour ( which we did ) you will be out for quite an expensive taxi fare. However that did not spoil our enjoyment and, all in all, I am more than happy to recommend this hotel.

Perhaps the most relaxing vacation my wife and I have ever experienced! Carlisle Bay is set on a private cove with a great beach. Resort was sold out per management but we never felt crowded, rushed or competing for space. The staff was great and certainly tried to make our stay pleasant, and it certainly was. The food was terrific and we experienced good service throughout our stay. Note the "dated" resort comments and while accurate really had zero bearing since grounds were impeccably clean, our suite was spacious and had all amenities you need. Most importantly everything worked well and connectivity was seemless with great wifi and cell service. We went off resort for two dinners. Do not go to Basilico but DO go to Sheer Rocks! Sheer Rocks has an incredible location on west coast and it was a great culinary experience. BTW resort taxi drivers are excellent and made getting around safe and easy.

Special shout out to Jetti Grill team especially Benn who tended bar as they were great. Certainly try his signature drink the Benny Boo! The sunsets on the beach at Carlisle were amongst the best we have seen anywhere and for point if referenceour 9th island visited. Also liked the live music every night especially the steel drum band BBQ.

My observation for the Carlisle team is to beef up beach chair service as it's a lost revenue opportunity and I think something the guests want. Also a small coffee shop for to go items and those who want a grab and go breakfast or afternoon cup might play well.

All told this is a great place to unwind, relax and enjoy the beach. The staff cares and we had a fantastic trip.

Thank you and we will be back!

We have just returned from a fabulous holiday at Carlisle Bay. This stunning resort is set on one of the prettiest and largest bays on the island with spacious suites which are located right on the endless sandy beach. The sunsets are so pretty and the entire resort exudes calm and tranquility. There is an abundance of water sports, tennis, gym and yoga available but if you just want to chill on the beach, enjoy the warm turquoise sea and be pampered with cocktails from beach service, this is the place for you. We were blown away by the wonderful food in every restaurant, the management and staff are very welcoming and caring, nothing is too much trouble. Car rental is very reasonably priced and nowhere is too far, there are 365 beaches in Antigua which should not be missed. We love Antigua and this trip did not disappoint. Thank you Carlisle Bay.

I very much wanted to love this hotel as we’d seen it a few years before whilst out on a sailing trip and had fallen in love with the location. However, we were disappointed on several fronts:
The food is mediocre at best, we tried all 4 restaurants
We had to ask on 4 separate occasions on the same day for the mini bar to be restocked and it was finally done the following day - we were not on the all inclusive package so a opportunity missed for the hotel
Our room was not serviced at all on one occasion, so full bins, unmade bed and damp towels were the order of the day, despite advising the front desk of the issue
I realise these are ‘first world’ problems but you choose to stay at a hotel for these luxuries and pay handsomely for the privilege and they really are basic asks for any hotel
However, the biggest issue for us was the behaviour of the children on this resort and there were lots of them. They ran unchecked through the main restaurant and a simple rule set by the hotel could have avoided this, namely, children should remain seated in the restaurant for the comfort of All guests. It’s a common rule in most households so I’m sure parents would be on board with this courteous request
It is a very family focused hotel so couples should be cautious before booking as the pool is filled with kids with inflatables and the associated noise is less than relaxing. Don’t misunderstand me, I love kids, I have 4 of my own but some parents allow theirs to become feral where normal standards of behaviour fly out the door!
The management team, whilst very charming at the meet and greet drinks have clearly not got a handle on running this hotel as expected of a five star resort and it needs much improvement.
We wouldn’t stay again as at this pricepoint, there are much better options, especially if travelling without children.

Vaughan on the beach and Winston at the front lobby were the stand out staff members, professional, friendly and efficient. Other staff could be surly.

Drinks are available all through the day. Kids had plenty of milkshakes etc. Local spirits are primarily used in “adult” drinks. I don’t remember snacks being readily available but there was afternoon tea provided each day if you so wished.

Dear Stephanie K, Thank you for submitting a question via this forum. Please know that our Ground floor Beach Suites have a foot bowl on the steps leading up to the patio, that way our guests can clean the sand off their feet before entering into their rooms. Should you have any other questions please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Kindest regards.

My wife was really ill on the day of departure and even then they still didn’t let us have a late check out. Certainly don’t leave a good taste in your mouth.

Hi Adolat K, Thank you for your interest in our activities. We usually have Soca Zumba on Tuesdays; Pilates on Mondays and Fridays; Yoga on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturdays and Aqua Aerobics on Thursdays. We look forward to welcoming you in mid-October and hope that you will be able to enjoy the activities offered.
