Our first long-haul trip since Covid lockdown and we had an enjoyable 2 weeks R&R at Carlisle Bay - but not quite the 5* experience the brochure promised. First the good bits: + great location in a sheltered bay on South side of the island + our top floor Ocean Suite overlooked the palm-lined beach & was of good size + choice of 4 restaurants with a good selection of local & international cuisine + some lovely, helpful staff especially in the Jetty and Indigo restaurants Now the not so good stuff: - room was tired, bathroom needs re-fitting and poor mini-bar selection - facilities - sunbeds tatty, tennis courts dilapidated & old watersports equipment - two of the 3 hobie catamarans taken out of service for half of time we were there - gym equipment comes out of the ark - rusty and half of it wasn't working - poor service in some areas of the resort - main bar staff particularly sloppy - Jetty and East restaurant menus limited & specials not changed often enough - run down and poorly maintained public facilities throughout the resort We were determined to make the most of it and overall had a good time and met some nice people but, to summarise, this resort is seriously under-invested and current does not justify it's 5 star classification. Management accept the need for significant investment and better service so, while we would return, that will only be if/when the TA reviews demonstrate a sustained improvement to standards.

As a frequent traveler and travel consultant, Carlisle Bay was a 5 star experience. From the moment of arrival we were transported to piece of paradise in Antiqua.. The staff were welcoming and every request was fulfilled with a smile.Although, my visit was over the festive holidays CB never felt crowed or too busy. Food was excellent, with lots of variety. Accommodations very comfortable, and kept very clean by lovely housekeepers. Water sports top grade. As a family we had extra activities arranged such a deep sea fishing and scuba diving arranged by staff that were perfect. The organization at hotel is top notch, including arranging transportation, and outside restaurant reservations. Actually our best food was at the CB . I have no negatives, and I am very particular .If you want a true Caribbean experience with fabulous beaches, wonderful service this is it.. loved it so much,I have reservations again for April spring break. The management,Mr Bryan Murphy makes sure that everything is running smoothly. Again, kudos to the staff just kind caring and charming.

Our family of three spent five nights at Carlisle Bay in the company of another small family and greatly enjoyed our stay. Our daughter is nine-years-old and spent most of her time in the tranquil bay waters and pool, which only ever seemed to be used by a handful of other guests at a time during our stay. Due to an A/C malfunction in our reserved suite, our two families quickly received an upgraded three-bedroom suite on the beach, which was spectacular in its views and convenience, so that we were able to basically roll out of bed into the water, if we so chose. The restaurants on the property are extremely expensive (with the portions at Indigo and East at times comically small for the entree price) -- but we thought the pizza at Ottimo was quite good. Also, the daily breakfast at Indigo that was part of our package was exquisite - a fairly elaborate buffet with options to order from a small but high-quality menu, with unlimited fresh-squeezed juices to sample. In a sense, the "free," all-you-can-eat breakfast arguably makes up for any expensive ala carte lunches and dinners for which one has to pay separately. All of that said, highlights of our trip included taking a taxi out to the restaurant at Sheer Rocks at sunset (a lifetime, top-10 restaurant experience for me) and then to Shirley Heights, which on Thursdays and Sundays has a late afternoon/early evening steel drum band on a bluff overlook English Harbor. Both of these latter restaurant experiences require reservations, proof of vaccination (at present) and, for us anyway, a relatively expensive taxi ride (which was still very much worth it given how challenging it would have been to drive there and the fact that our overall costs for each evening were still less than "eating in" at Carlisle Bay). Both restaurant experiences were extraordinary in large part because of the unique settings of each. Getting back to Carlisle Bay itself, we were particularly dazzled by some of the little surprises at its corners ... for instance, we'd recommend taking out a kayak (which is complementary and easy to borrow) to the lagoon that one can enter at the end of the property and that runs behind it, bestowing grand views of the rolling green mountains, with fish zipping by in the shallow waters and white egrets wading around at nearly every turn. On the occasions we ventured there, we were alone and the area seemed (delightfully) under-used. Kayaking out into the bay, meanwhile, provides even more grand views of the shore while also showing access to little pocket beaches and rock formations. As noted, this appears to be a very quiet resort, and while there were several families with young children like ours, this seemed more the exception than the rule. Even with all the COVID-related protocols, we had a wonderfully relaxing vacation at Carlisle Bay!

Dear sha987, Thank you for taking the time to share detailed feedback regarding your recent stay at Carlisle Bay Antigua. We are delighted to learn that we made a lasting impression and that you were dazzled by some of the little surprises at our corners whilst kayaking. Sheer Rocks at sunset is a must see for anyone who vacations in Antigua; the sunset view at Shirley’s Heights is also a must see. Both locations offer remarkable views on the island of Antigua, and we are happy you got to experience this. We look forward to welcoming you back to Carlisle Bay in the future for another wonderfully relaxing vacation. Best Wishes.

Carlisle bay This resort is in the most beautiful spot and has an absolutely lovely setting - the resort is really well maintained and everyone works really hard to make your stay as pleasurable as possible - obviously when you stay In a five star resort you expect the prices to be quite high but one thing to always bear in mind is that whatever price u see add 25% as there is a service charge and tax added to everything and it does bump the amount you are paying up quite a bit. Room- we stayed in the ocean suites in room 310 - lovely and spacious and cleaned every day - loads of clean towels and the coffee and tea supplies in the room are also replenished when required - if you like coffee, there is a really good nespresso machine in the room - the mini bar was really well stocked and we were really pleasantly surprised that all soft drinks/waters/snacks/choc is supplied for free once a day - this is a nice touch as normally you would have to pay for everything in the mini bar Beach - the beds do get taken early so we had to be out there for just after 7 if you wanted beds on the front row - lovely beach though - fantastic spot and beautiful setting and the service on the beach is also really good - all of the guys who work down there are always helpful and obliging. One nice touch at the beach and also by the pool is that cool boxes are provided stocked with water and again this is free - we felt that this was really good and have never seen this anywhere else we have stayed . You can also have your lunch down at the beach and they will bring it to you from any of the restaurants, other than east which is only open evenings Spa - I went to the spa for a West Indian massage and this was for an hour - it was absolutely fantastic and one of the best I have had - I was asked to wear a mask whilst I was laying on my back for the treatment but was able to take it off when I was laying on my front - the resort does have pretty strict covid measures and they are always adhered to and there are no exceptions which we thought was really good Breakfast is fantastic such a great choice of everything and the omelettes are to die for so good - there are also options of things to have made in the kitchen too - I would recommend the avocado on toast with poached eggs - it’s so good - there is a great choice of pastries, cereal, yoghurts, and also traditional hot breakfast food; bacon, sausage, mushrooms etc all of the food at breakfast is of a very high standard and there is something for everyone East restaurant - food is good - quite a good choice we ate in here three times but it does lack atmosphere - we would recommend trying the sushi as it is very good Jetty grill - food is excellent especially the fish tacos - amazing - special thanks to Kaylin who was absolutely brilliant - She has the most amazing service skills And always made us feel so welcome - jetty grill is the best one in the resort - the atmosphere in here is always good and they generally have some nice music playing - this is also an adults only restaurant and it seems to get booked up pretty quickly - they also have a nice lunch menu as well There is also Indigo by the beach that offer a nice lunch menu but we only had dinner there once and it was a BBQ themed night and the food from the BBQ wasn’t hot which was quite disappointing - it was quite busy so didn’t want to go back to get it reheated - it was $65 per person and no way worth that - we did let our waiter know and he said it would be fed back - as a result of this experience we didn’t visit again in the evening as felt it was not up to 5 star standard - they did have live music though on the night we went so that created a nice atmosphere The other restaurant is Otimo which is Italian and we only had food from here at lunch time and generally this was a pizza that we would share - the pizzas are excellent and really tasty - I don’t think we ever saw anyone in here in the evening so we didn’t go in the evening as felt it lacked atmosphere Nakiya on concierge is absolutely fantastic and nothing is too much trouble and helped us with lots of things and organised all of our restaurant bookings - she is an asset to the resort All staff are absolutely fantastic - so helpful, friendly and nothing is too much trouble - everyone is polite and helpful and it’s nice that some of the staff call you by your name which is nice considering the number of people that stay in the resort - also thanks to all of the team in reception who again are very helpful and also to Larry who was always pleasant and so helpful Taxis - we thought taxis were expensive - I guess when you go somewhere you have an expectation of how much things like this are going to be but the tariffs are set by the government - there aren’t really many restaurants near to Carlisle bay so you do have to take a taxi if you want to go somewhere - a taxi return to St. John’s was $60, English harbour is $70 return, sheer rocks is $48 return and this is all in US dollars - so if you are going out for dinner to it adds a fair bit onto your bill - it’s just worth knowing but it doesn’t matter which taxi you have they are all the same. Places we ate outside the resort: Sheer rocks - very nice but quite pricey - nice setting La Brasserie at the slipway dockyard English harbour - very nice and ran by a lovely French couple - food is lovely and quite reasonably priced - setting is beautiful Cambusa - Falmouth harbour Al Porto - jolly harbour - really nice Italian restaurant and worth a visit

Unfortunately not a 5 star experience but definitely a 5 star price. The problem with very large hotels is the management of everything that is needed to give the best experience and this hotel falls down in quite a few areas. It’s probably the most expensive hotel on the island and somewhere we would not stay again. It’s a wonderful location Wonderful beach Large rooms But is let down by the poor staff, something a well run 5 star hotel should be on too if. Some staff were great and others were terrible. Issues we had were Room had a musty smell but with only one window at the front it was hard to ventilate the room. My wife fell ill as a result Breakfast staff forgot lots of things like drinks, cups knives and forks. Basic stuff really. Even forgot our side dishes in the evening. What you don’t want to be on holiday is to become a manager of the hotel yourself. At the Italian restaurant the chairs had tomatoes sauce , bits of pizza and looked really grubby. If you pay a fortune then you expect a great service. Food is tediculaously expensive and beware the price you see on the me u is subject to 10% service and 14% sales tax Even the bill for the room had 10% service charge added which is something I have never seen !!! When asked about this at reception they did not know what it was and we had to go through 2 managers before this was answered. My advice is to avoid this hotel and checkin next door at Curtain Bluff where we are now and it cheaper better and all inclusive. Another good hotel is The Inn at English Harbour Sorry Carlisle Bay but you need to raise your game in this highly industry. Simply being a member of The Leading Hotels does not mean you are one !! competive market.
