Detailed Reviews
Me and my wife stayed at the Naturalist in January, and My gosh. We need to return. Such a wonderful gem of a location, great service, great staff, stunning views and a just totally relaxing and most ideal vacation. As you approach the location from the hilltop you see this Hotel and the whole Castara village, honestly the excitement will start to hit you.
We stayed in the Crows Nest room, which has a balcony and is the most coziest hotel room I have ever stayed in. Room has internet, cable tv, a kitchen and a big bathroom with hot and cold water.
As soon as we arrived we went walking all around the village and everyone was pleasant and friendly towards us. The beaches both Big Bay and Little Bay were nice to bath in but for us Little Bay is our favorite, Great beach for snorkeling. Did I say the views are stunning.
I recommend this location to anyone who wants to get away, to escape to paradise, a location where the staff treat you with respect, the owners are around always willing to help and assist you the views are totally stunning and a location build with the sustainable tourism product intact. I shall be returning soon and at least 2-3 times a year. My Heart belongs to this location and village.

My wife & I spent a week here the first week of 2020. We chose to go to Castara, because it is NOT the normal tourist thing on Tobago. We wanted somewhere quiet, with a nice beach, a few restaurants, and plenty of battery recharging. The Naturalist ended up being where we stayed.
As you'll see from all the pictures here, the hotel strikes a good balance between fancy & appropriate. If you want a Hilton, don't go to Castara. If you want a place that isn't intrusive to the environment around, that has everything you need for your stay, you'll be happy here.
The staff are fantastic. They're happy to chat, happy to help you plan. If you want them to order roti from a nearby place early in the morning (and even have someone go get it for you!), they'll fix that, too. By the way, do that. The beef is excellent.
The room we had (Grouper) was clean, well-appointed, the beds comfortable, and the view wonderful. It's worth noting that there are many rooms, and the view will be very different depending on where you are. Our rooms was on ground level, closest to the beach. It was splendid.
Hummingbirds... there are tons of hummingbirds! Ancile (the owner) has put out a number of feeders on the property (we had one on our deck, too) and you can spend hours just watching these wonderful creatures. You'll eat breakfast in a haze of hummingbirds. It's initially very unreal, then it just becomes charming. Also, if you should happen to leave a feeder out after dark (as we did one evening), it'll get swarmed by wee fruit bats. Some might find that intimidating, but I thought it was excellent. They completely emptied the feeder overnight :)
Don't come here to be in a hurry. Accept that you're on island time. Leave your computer at home.

Best location in a small fishingvillage Castara. Good service, nothing is impossible 😀 Ask for Ancle and Tracy and they will fix it. Beatiful view from the hotel over the ocean and the rainforest, we lived in Snapper. The people in Castara were very friendly and we felt like a part of the community. A nice place to stay for a family or a couple. You can rent a car at the hotel for a small amount and easily drive around the island. A nice waterfall is close to the hotel, just cross the footballfield. If you want to go on a nice boattrip, ask for Flow, a local fisherman 😄 We can warmly recommend the Naturalist Beach Resort👍

This place was one of the worst I've stayed. I booked a wonderfu, invitngl beachfront room, that turned out to be a dark, damp room, that smelled like mold situated down a noisy, concrete hallway.
When I politely tried to follow up, suggesting a new room noting the price and advertising pictures were not what was provided, the owner shouted and tried to intimidate He told me I was a crazy woman, asking if I knew that about myself. As a solo female traveler, and with him being very aggressive toward me, I had to go find another place to stay on short notice in the middle of a busy holiday stretch at night.
I would not recommend this hotel at all. I had booked on Air BnB and was provided my money back after they investigated my stay, confirming that it was falsely advertised. Following that encounter, he continued to message me noting I was an awful person.
I wish I would have known in advance about the owner and his property being the way it is. I would advise you at all to avoid this place, you can easily access the beach from any other point in Castara. You can certainly find a better place close by!

We had a two week stay in the three bedroom apartment which was one of the best locations we have ever stayed. Sitting above the sea watching the sunsets or even watching the rain, it was the perfect peaceful spot!! There were sunbeds on the veranda aswel as ones available for use on the beach. Tea and coffee is provided in the room, beds are comfy, view from bed to die for!! The people in these apartments and village are so friendly and we made some lovely friends. Breakfast was tasty with a good selection, sometimes we even had fresh fish caught by Ancle the afternoon before. Loved it here so much we are going back for three weeks over this New Year. Sadly we couldn't get the same apartment as we left it late to book but I'm sure the one we get will still be good. Lovely boat trip arranged by Ancle in a small group of six which was really special. There is a great restaurant a few steps away on the beach, plus sevral others within walking distance. the supermarket is a five minute walk along the beach. It is somewhat limited and very expensive but there is a big one you can use if you have hired a car. Take some duty free wine/spirits as the drinks are very expensive in the supermarkets. £20 for a bottle of wine, £50 for vodka. A car is not needed but preferable as there are so many other beautiful beaches to visit, and of course the rainforest! We also enjoyed helping the fishermen bring their nets in. You must walk down to the waterfall in the village for a swim - it is very easy to get in and out and so clean and fresh. Talk to your neighbours, most seem to come back year after year and can give great tips on places to visit. I cannot recommend this place enough, would give 10/10 if could. Can't wait to be back!!

We stayed at the Naturalist Resort from December 26, 2020 to December 31,2020.
This visit was long in coming as we toured the resort about 3 years ago and fell in love with the apartments that are a hop, skip and a jump to the sea. However, as faith will have it, the apartment we set our eye on, was occupied for the said period we wanted, so we stayed at the Blue Marlin, which was upstairs.
If you love waking up and seeing an unobstructed view of the sea and the sound of the waves to lull you to sleep at night, then this is the room for you.
The apartment sleeps three(3) persons comfortably and includes a full kitchen, a personal wrap around balcony and breakfast, which was a plus for us.
The host Ancle, made sure everything was in order and the morning conversations at the breakfast table, were divine.
I will strongly recommend this resort for all travelers, to experience Castara and all the wonderful natural surroundings, that make this place so unique.
Stay safe.

We stayed at Naturalist Beach Resort in the Blue Marlin Apartment for 8 nights and we found paradise. The apartment has a spacious still very cozy bedroom with a queen size bed and a single bed, the kitchen is big and is well equipped and the bathroom even had a jacuzzi. Best of all is the huge terrace, which literarly goes round the apartment and where you always find sun and shade at the same time. There are four beach beds, two tables and enough chairs on the terrace as well. We loved to sit on the terrace watching the fishermen and the sunsets. The apartment is right above the sea so you fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the waves. The stairs going down go directly to the beach, you are only steps away from the sea. The beach and the sea are stunning, we went snorkling and saw some beautiful fish, a turtle and stingrays. Breakfast is buffet style and included in the room price. It has local as well as international food and is really delicious. Ancle, the owner, is always around, he and his team are always friendly and help in any way possible. Ancle also answered all my mails instantly and was very helpful even before booking. He took us out snorkeling and fishing with his boat one day - he really did everything to make our stay a memorable one.
Across the apartment there is D'Almond Tree Restaurant, a nice restaurant with a lovely and always cheerful owner and delicious food at reasonable prices. It's just a few steps to the village center where you find a supermarket, ice cream store and more restaurants. Castara and The Naturaliste are a very special place and we cannot wait to return!

My husband and I have been returning to The Naturalist every year since 2005, with the only two exceptions being one during the Covid lockdown, and one due to a surgery that prevented travel. In fact, many of the guests at this establishment are return visitors -- many coming back for years and years, like us. The reasons for our return are many. The setting is unbeatable; our room is right on the beach of Castara Bay, with seabirds diving for fish, and the local fisherfolk casting their seine nets every morning right off our deck. The staff are friendly and helpful, always happy to answer questions or provide an extra saucepan for the self-catering guests. The rooms are kept spotless, with cleaning service and bedding changes every two days. The village is small but well equipped with fruit and veggie stalls, a small supermarket, fresh fish every day, a pharmacy, an ice cream shop, several bars and a few good restaurants., not to mention the famous dirt oven where fresh bread and rolls are baked in the traditional manner. The Naturalist and Castara are like a second home. And the proprietor and host, Ancle George, is always accommodating and always welcoming.

It is always special to return to this hidden away cove and the adjacent charming village of Castara. Enveloped on three sides by majestic tropical forests, this is a hidden jewel for those who know or seek the relaxation, humility, and simple visions that the natural world brings. At a time where Nature around the world is being exploited, mistreated, disrespected, the experience in Castara and its environs helps us to reunite with the environment in a profound way and frankly, pushes anyone with a conscience and caring for our children's future to boldly make lifestyle changes and attitudes that are compatible with and contributing to a healthier environment. The accommodations are superb and the views from the property are magical, especially in sunsets. The owner Ancle and his staff are very welcoming and helpful. If there is one trip that your budget might allow and that fits the essential sustainable rules of being very selective on how often you use air travel, this is a memorable, fulfilling choice!

Review of Hotel X:My experience at Hotel X was unfortunately far from satisfactory. We had booked a room with a sea view and received confirmation of our booking, but upon arrival at the hotel, we were assigned a room overlooking the garden instead. The staff claimed that this was the only available room for the price range we had paid for. What exacerbated our experience was primarily the unfriendly attitude of the staff throughout our stay. We did not feel welcomed or well taken care of. Additionally, the cleaning staff missed cleaning our room several times during our stay, making our experience even more inconvenient. In summary, despite having expectations based on the confirmed booking of a room with a sea view, we were disappointed not to receive it and by the unfriendly service from the staff. I would not recommend Hotel to other travelers.

Each apartment is different & therefore has different rates. Its best to look at their website & contact them directly for up to date information.
Sorry just saw this - Yes we could snorkel from the beach in front of The Naturalist on the far side of the next cove - it was an easy swim over or you just walked to the next cove and swim from there. We do not dive, but we had a car and used the blogs to find other beaches to snorkel from - There are many with easy access from the beach.
Yes. Very cold ones.
