We booked independently (much cheaper than a package) for 2 weeks commencing 11 Nov 2006.
Research on this site and knowledge of the Caribbean confirmed we were right to book half board.
The price of dinner alone if purchased separately on a casual basis came close to our half board plan comprising room, breakfast and evening dinner.

If you are looking for an international hotel brand with glitz, glamour, plastic smiles and false values, Blue Haven is NOT for you.

BUT, whilst Blue Haven is far from perfect, it offers genuine art deco and colonial style that is both chic and classy; all wrapped and presented in a subtle boutique style product; delivered best by its independent ownership. With 55 rooms, it is smaller than the mass-market brands but ensures the staff may get to know and address you by name soon after arrival and throughout your stay.

Blue Haven met and often exceeded our expectations. When we did have minor issues, which we highlighted politely and constructively, they were resolved. It might take several requests but that is the Caribbean way!

The hotel was about 50% occupied during our stay and has an ongoing refurbishment programme. The hotel is featured in a few package tour brochures from the UK, Holland and especially Austria and Germany as the owner is Austrian. We suspect package tour guests booked more out of convenience. We never saw tour buses and only the occasional local tour rep. The owner is often to be seen with his family eating in the main restaurant – always a reassuring sign!

During our stay the fitness & games area near the swimming pool was being re-tiled and decorated. New terrace furniture was also installed. The swimming pool was actually rarely used, not for any negative reasons but because the beach was so heavenly and accessible for the able bodied. (Not disabled friendly) In mid-November, which is towards the end of the rainy and low season, we never saw more than 12 swimmers in the sea or on the included sun loungers, mattresses were also available. Beach changing rooms and toilets were a few steps away and we hope that these are decorated with improved lighting soon. Although all Tobago beaches are public, we never counted more than a handful of ‘locals’ at weekends.

Noise – none other than the sea and birds on the beach. No radios, TV, phones, road traffic or planes etc. Bliss!

Evening dinner was always of a high standard although portions for myself could have been larger; especially vegetables. Our choices were always available. Desserts very limited though and themed around coconut ice cream and/or crepes (which my wife can’t eat). If you ask for an extra scoop, the staff always obliged with a smile. Smoking was not banned or even segregated and proved irritating.

Many of the staff names mentioned in past reports have now left, as retaining staff anywhere in Tobago is an island-wide problem but be assured that we found all the current staff obliging and helpful.

The only word of caution we have is to check if a group are booked during your stay in this or indeed any other hotel.
A meeting room is provided at Blue Haven but can stretch already pushed staff in many areas of the hotels operations; depending on any special requests they may have such as catering. Ensure extra staff will be available to service the group.

We have travelled widely; this trip being pleasure although we confess to a good knowledge of the group travel (specifically incentive based) business. (Primarily conferences, meetings and events) Never before have we encountered such an enthusiastic, dedicated and highly qualified general manager – Anderson McPhee who demonstrates total passion for his hotel in everything he does. (GM’s have to be skilled in all areas of business management such as hospitality, catering, finance, IT and human resources).

When you stay, don’t be surprised to see Anderson waiting at your restaurant table, helping in the kitchen and resolving IT problems in the front and back offices! In our opinion Anderson needs a small management team that can be incentivised to remain loyal to allow him to focus more on strategic development.

Blue Haven suffers that rare quality of underselling itself, particularly its brochure and web site.

For example, despite extensive advance research we were delighted to find bonuses during our stay that might interest you:

·Two kayaks with life vests (no extra charge)
·Weekly 1 hour managers cocktail reception
·Sat fortnightly themed night buffet dinner with entertainment in the beach bar/restaurant
·Special diet requests met – The only hotel out of about 12 we have found anywhere that has ever responded to our request for gluten free bread
·Low key evening restaurant entertainment several nights per week. (NB both live and pre-recorded. The latter too loud for our ears)
·Late check-outs without extra charge.
·Empty fridge and personal safe in room
·Tea/coffee hospitality tray in bedroom – if you ask!
·Beach towels on request
·See though glass shower onto the balcony and sea (all private and not overlooked from 1st and 2nd floors!)

We had a great time and thoroughly recommend Blue Haven, especially for its fabulous location and food.

Footnote: Since returning we have learned that many more staff have been recruited and are actively addressing many of the previous shortcomings.

So here's the deal....

I'm a bit of a Schraeger girl - In cities, I like hotels high on style, and I've ready to trade service for ambience ...

In the Caribbean, I prefer boutique hotels and getting to know the locals and the local area. Tobago is perfect for that. And If you like Tobago - That is , if you like unspoilt, unfussy, simple, pared down friendly pretty Caribbean , then you will LOVE the Blue Haven. I've been five times in five years ( as chance would have it I stumbled upon it just as it was reopening after the refurb ) and I've been back every year since...In fact, I'm off there again next week - I'll update you on how it goes this time ....

True - it suffers from the Tobago malaise of being good but not great - But this is an island that's all about not trying too hard and not taking itself or anything too seriously ..The rooms are clean and very comfortable, the location is the best on the island, the beach is delightful - ( though Atlantic and therefore a little wavey at times ) - the staff are as friendly as can be , and personally-speaking I just love the pool and watching the sun set from the small but perfectly formed pool. It's a cosy unpretentious sarong and slippers-style home from home ....

Be prepared though - In five years, the gym has never been open. The bar has always been dull, and the restaurant fluctuates wildly from season to season.

If you want smooth, seamless US style service then the Hilton or Coco Reef are for you . But if you're after something more unique, special and dare I say romantic - If you want to feel like you're in Tobago and not a namesless US-style resort, then I'd choose the Blue Haven every time .

With considerably less traffic than most islands, it was somewhat difficult to see a clear choice for a Tobago hotel using the available web sites and literature. Our preference for a honeymoon site was for it to be well-maintained, have good service, privacy, a good beach, and proximity to restaurants. Compared to other offerings, we believe the Blue Haven surely met most of those conditions and was the best value. The grounds, public areas and room were near impeccable and if you take the time you’ll see the bird and minor wildlife the grounds supports. The room staff was great and practically invisible. Due to low season, we can understand the beach area was not manicured every day. Also due to low season, we shared a 55-room hotel with about 5 other couples and were left alone, but not ignored. I’m sure they have their crowded weeks as well, but we were fortunate to avoid the Airbus load we noticed in a couple other hotels.

We truly appreciated our stay in the hotel’s signature room with its fabulous views and history. We did not, however, enjoy the almost obligatory annoyance of the customer with inadequate handling of the final bill. Just a hint to the owner who was away at the time. The only other downer was the desk’s failure to wake us for an early departure flight which was somewhat annoying. Fortunately, we prepare for such things. With an almost perfect operation, it isn’t a good thing to irritate the customer when they are leaving. Last impressions, you understand.

Being on the Atlantic side, I had assumed the medium dark sand beach of Bacolet Bay would be less than it was. It turned out to have a perfectly fine, flat surface with generally moderate wave action that did not prevent swimming or enjoyment. With our room there was a bonus in the tranquillity and sleeping pill quality of the waves, As with other Tobago sites off Little Tobago and in Englishman’s Bay, the snorkeling was unimpressive, and I had to make do with just a few small fish and little coral.

While the hotel is on the outskirts of Scarborough and some restaurants, most proved to have limited hours or were closed for low season. This made eating less of an adventure than I prefer, but fortunately the hotel’s own Shutters on the Bay restaurant turned out to be one of the best and dependable. Service was all the more enjoyable thanks to a wait staff such as Tricia and Anderson. We also enjoyed a well-run beach bar with nice lunches and Andre’s excellent service and personality at the main bar.

We send heartfelt good wishes to the Blue Haven Hotel, Tobago, West Indies. It has being fully refurbished and reopened after a difficult two years under the Covid Pandemic. The 'Blue Haven' is a tranquil family led hotel overlooking Bacolet bay, watched over by Humming Birds and Pelicans. It offers genuine hospitality in a beautiful setting. If you can marvel at spectacular sun sets between palm trees from the most iconic Terrace in the Caribbean, sipping a cocktail of your choice, then this is the place to be.

We stayed at the Alexandra and went to the Fire and Ice restaurant for dinner one night. The grounds of the resort are beautiful and very well kept. Alexandra, our server, was exceptional in her service. She was attentive and took care of our every need with a smile and professionalism. It is great that the resorts are interchangeable. We will be back.

I’m a remote worker and stayed at the Blue Haven Hotel for 2 weeks. It was the definition of working from paradise. Although I was working, it felt like a vacation. The service was amazing, everyone was so friendly, the food was delicious, wifi all throughout the hotel including the pool. I was going for a swim in the private beach during lunch break and then having a drink for sunset. Slept with the ocean sound. I highly recommend and will be coming back.

The Blue Haven hotel exceeded all our expectations! The view from the terrace is just picturesque - a true tropical paradise! The staff was incredibly helpful and the rooms always clean. The food was delicious (highlight being the catch of the day). It was our first visit to Tobago and will definitely be back at the Blue Haven soon. Highly recommended!

Sadly not. But the staff do come and ask if you’d like a drink and bring them down from the bar. Alternatively, just order drinks before you go on the beach and the staff will bring them to you.

Do men have to wear trousers in the evening in the restaurant. Or are smart shorts acceptable.
Answer from Robert Bottering

Yes the Blue Haven Hotel has a very nice exclusive beach connected to the hotel. Celebrities and royals such a the queen of England's husband have been spotted at the hotel and beach. Yes, it is safe to walk during the day as it is on any other island. There are a lot of shops in Scarborough which is a 10 minute walk from the hotel. It is also a 15 minute walk from the port which has a lot of local food, restaurants, and stores. If you want to go anywhere else the hotel will organize it for you.
