We spent a night at An Lam to celebrate a milestone birthday. It’s a small, quaint retreat around 35-40 minutes from central HCMC.
I would say it’s more of a 4 star than a 5 but that doesn’t take away from its charm.
There is a small pool, spa and a beautifully located restaurant built around a large tree. If you’re looking for a large resort with plenty of activities, this is not the place for you. But...if what you want is a place to unwind, read, relax and feel far away from the city, then this is for you.
The property is not large but it’s cozy and peaceful. There are 19 accommodations which mean it never feels overcrowded even on weekends.
We had the very comfortable family villa which had 2 bedrooms and a living area. We went into d1 for dinner and it was an easy drive to and back.
Breakfast was wonderful ( a la carte) and we spent a few hours savoring our coffees and croissants while watching the boats go by on the river. The quality of good was top-notch.
Special mention needs to be made of our amazing butler Ms Anh. Nothing was too much trouble for her add she helped me organize balloons and a cake for my husband’s birthday.
Room for improvement: There are mosquitoes and it would be good if the mosquito net actually worked as intended. Unfortunately, it’s poorly designed and doesn’t wrap around the bed.

We had 2 nights at this hotel before travelling on to the sister hotel An Lam Ninh Van Bay. It is a small boutique hotel, in beautiful gardens on the bank of the Saigon river. We had a river view room which was beautifully appointed and had a private deck and pool right on the bank of the river. The service was excellent and we felt very looked after. All soft drinks in the room were complimentary and they had a great happy hour where drinks were 2 for the price of one. The food was OK, but not the best we've had. This was a lovely hotel to return to at the end of a busy day sightseeing.

Celebrated my big 40 birthday with my husband. The place is amazing and food. Peaceful place best for total relaxation. The downfall was the service.. My husband arranged a birthday breakfast surprise to our butler. He called and follow up plenty of times until the surprise is no longer surprise. After more than an hour of waiting the butler showed up and apologies, because he forgot. :( We arrived early to the hotel so we waited for our room. Upon check in our suite room is just gorgeous and spacious. and the toilet is big as well. However, the in dressing room a water pipe broke and water comes out like a water falls so our plan to rest upon check in did not happened. It took long time to fix it. The plumber came and we have to call housekeeping to clean up what the plumber left after he fixed the water falls.

We stayed there for 4 nights. The room we had, 102, was very good. Even being in their cheapest group it was large and comfortable.
This is a place you go for relaxing and touring the area, not for enjoying the sun all day. The pool is in the shadow of large trees and the pool rather cool.
The food was excellent, however not cheap. Typical cost for a dinner for 4 adults and 2 kids was around 130 and 140 USD.
The staff was lovely.

We booked the private pool villa (V11). If you're wanting an oasis away from the city, and paying these prices, honestly your money would be better spent at the Mia Hotel or something similar to that. I'm writing this on the first night of our stay and I've managed to kill about 9 mosquitos in our room. It's frustrating because you're paying 5 Star hotel prices and throughout the night the persistent buzzing of mosquitos near your ear does not at all make for a relaxing slumber. The hotel provides mosquito repellant and mosquito incense wafting through the room, however with the choking smell of the mosquito incense, along with having to spray your body with mosquito spray before hopping into bed, made it a dreadful stay. If they can control the mosquito issue, then the place is quite beautiful, however the service, the ambiance, and the quality does not match a hotel, such as the Mia Hotel, which is also in the 5 Star class. The kids enjoyed the boat ride. The website touts a map showing a chicken coop, an organic garden, and a schedule of activities for families to join, such as fishing for the children, etc.; there was none of that. We asked the concierge for a schedule of events, and they said there was none. We asked where the fishing and chicken coop was for the children to see and experience, as advertised on their website, and they said those amenities would not be available until next year! A lot of rough edges and a lot of training needed for the staff. Even now as I am typing mosquitos are flying across the computer attracted to the light. I'm dreading going to sleep knowing the buzzing from the mosquitos will be intolerable. Also, massive construction happening on the grounds. Nothing to do, but enjoy the river, swim, and eat since none of the activities such as fishing, organic gardening, and yoga are unavailable. Also, no mirrors in our bathroom, and for an entire villa, there were only 2 wastebaskets, one in each bathroom. Overall, the mosquitos were ridiculously abundant in the room. Guests should not have to douse their entire bodies with mosquito repellant before sleeping, and if there is such a mosquito issue, the rooms need to be provided with mosquito netting around the bed. My two children's legs were bitten massively even after spraying since sleeping on the bed rubs the repellant off.

Total bliss from the chaotic bustling city of Saigon! The staff were so kind and made us feel at home straight away, a lot of attention to detail made the room with a pool very special - it was very difficult to leave the serenity of it to go on our sight seeing tour. Our butler organised all of our tours, which were all excellent. The cocktails were to die for and we got addicted to them... every night we had to have one! And the very romantic experience was to take the speed boat there and back to town - we really enjoyed every minute of it!

The experience of this hotel starts from the moment I stepped onto the speed boat for the journey up river. The view along the way is wonderful.
The staff was already at the pier welcoming us as we are approaching and absolutely took care of everything from then on.
Set in nature, the place is like a cocoon of green, and the foliage acts like a sound dampener, I hear birds chirping, crickets, wind chimes, rustling of leaves and even the occasional droning of passing boats is soft and lazy. This place has the best landscaping I have seen anywhere.
The room is so huge that even the numerous full size pieces of furniture do not crowd the space. And the bathroom is one of the largest I’ve seen.
The F&B is really quite good. I was expecting to pay alot more compared to HCMC since it’s a secluded location and I can only dine there but the menu is surprisingly very well priced.
The pool is absolutely a sanctuary. Trees tower over and plants hug the edges. However it ces with some inconveniences like leaves and twigs littering the bed and the pool side. I also got some bird droppings as I lay on the bed.
The only one complaint I have is when I dropped in the lounge for happy hour and was surprised to find myself in a club. The music and the interior design were loud and over the top, completely the opposite of what the hotel sets out to be.
Overall, it’s a resort I totally recommend to anyone wanting a short relaxing getaway from the bustling HCMC

We stayed at the An Lam last November and absolutely loved it. We had a pool suite that was private, intimate, and tranquil. So we were looking forward to our Valentines Day weekend getaway. Alas, not al rooms are created equal, even within the same room category. Unfortunately, for our second visit, we were given what must be the worst room in the resort. While it was designated as a pool suite and at the same price point as our previous room, it was terribly located on the top floor of the back house, behind the resort kitchens. From the tired looking (and quite dirty) pool deck we had an unobstructed view into the kitchens and, for better part of the day, we could also hear them and smell them. The complete lack of privacy was made worse by the fact that staff walking to and from the kitchens as well as other guests walking by to their own rooms could look up and see us lounging on our pool deck or inside our bedroom and bathroom... and we could see them from our bed. Cherry on the top, there was a suspicious sewage smell on and off throughout the day. Needless to say, we cut our stay short even though it was non-refundable. Would I recommend the An Lam River Retreat? Only if you can get a guarantee in writing that you will get a good room... and avoid busy times so you can change your room if needed. Pictures for proof.

This city escape plan is really affordable. Room is excellent, we can go directly shower room from private pool. The bathtub is made of a block of black stone. And all foods are delicious. we could relax only 30min shorts trip from the city.

The resort is located outside the center of Ho Chi Minh, about 40 minutes by taxi. It takes about the same amount of time to get to the airport by taxi. Our room was spacious and had a seating area with a comfortable sofa and an armchair. Behind it was the very comfortable bed with mosquito net. There was also a fridge, a kettle and tea, a Nespresso machine and glass bottles were filled with fresh drinking water every day. The large bathroom was separated from the rest of the room by a curtain and sliding glass doors. There was a free-standing bathtub next to the shower. The restaurant had outdoor seating right by the river, or indoors, which was cooled with fans. The breakfast buffet was gigantic! There was a wide selection of dishes from the Western and Asian breakfast spectrum. The dinner menu was also varied, although we only tried Asian dishes (fresh mango juice 6 USD, mango salad 8.50 USD, fried salmon with side dishes 14.50 USD). The food was OK. We really enjoyed the sorbets (3 USD per scoop). We visited the rooftop bar once. The interior is impressive! The pool was beautifully surrounded by tropical plants. There were sunny and shady spots. We thought it was a shame that this area was a bit neglected. The cushions on the loungers, the parasols and sun shades were stained, and the beach towels were a bit worn. There was a bell so you could call the restaurant if you wanted to place an order. But no one came, so I went myself. We didn't try out the spa, we thought the prices were too high.
We used a very special - free! - service offered by the hotel a few times: in just 20 minutes, you are taken to the Bach Dang jetty by speedboat or from there to the hotel. There is a fixed timetable and you have to reserve seats in advance (for example through the butler).

Currently, we do not have any major construction going on at the Retreat and the main works have been completed. After this, we will only have periodic preventive maintenance scheduled.

If you just show any local taxi driver the phone number to an Lam they will call for directions for the last little bit if they have any problems. We stayed in an Lam 4 nights and got taxis from central HCM (grab taxis, like Uber - very good) with no problems at all.
However, as I say in my original review, we won’t be going back to An Lam.
There are more places to choose from in the Thuan An area.
