We have had several email contacts with silvie, the last one 2 days before arrival. As silvie herself was on bali at that moment we should be welcomed by gunther. When we arrived we were dropped at the jetty by the speedboat, but nobody to welcome us. When we walked to the resort it was completely deserted and looking like there hasn't been anyone for months. The central meeting room was a mess, the dive centre was empty and fully filled with trash. We took a look a some of the huts, but they were all in bad shape. We don't mind basic accomodation, but this is much less. Retreat may have been a paradise in the past, but those days sees to be over. There we were, alone on the resort, no food, no water, speedboat gone and no cellphone reach. After some time we were able to escape from the the resort by signalling a passing fisherman. We were dropped at Araya a few km away (and had a perfect time over there). They told us that they hadn't seen Sylvie in 2 years on the resort and she was taking care on street dogs on bali. Very nobel but lags her responsibility for gùests of the resort. I've send an email to her with the same story as I'm writing here, but she did not respond. She probably total out of control in managing this and she may better sell this place to someone who can.

Don't go there!!!!! Very overpriced for what you get. Beautiful area, great food, but you can find this in any other place on the Togians AND not be so annoyed. „We are not a backpackers' place“ (quote by Silvie who is the owner after we asked for a water refill station). She got very defensive and tried to tell us that she is the only one in the Togians who has done recycling for 16 years by giving all her plastic bottles to the poor villagers - but of course she cannot guarantee that the bottles don't then end up in the sea along with most plastic rubbish in Indonesia. At least: she apologized in the morning for her rough actions and promised to get a water refill station to save plasic. Happy to know if this becomes truth. Owner is rude and untrue towards guests: „Don`t be so German“ when we tried to make sure that there will be a boat picking us up to get us to Ampana in time (boat was 1hour late, some other guests the day before had to wait 4hours), she told us the rooms we booked were the last ones available, so we MUST put down a deposit – but in fact we were the only guests there for two nights. Also when the staff want to go and watch television at 8pm, you will struggle to get any more cold beers for the night :( In the gardens watch out for coconuts – the palm trees are extremely tall but there is no effort to clear coconuts to make it less dangerous. But luckily the nice boat captain who hangs around is happy to climb up and get you a coconut to eat if you ask nicely. Low quality of rooms: ok for a normal Indonesian style or backpacker place: traditional shower (just a basin of cold water and a bucket), spiders, not fit for purpose mosquito net. Rooms are overpriced: we paid 2-3times as much as in any other place all over Flores, Lombok or Sulawesi in 10 weeks for having a lower standard.

Island Retreat is a place that will stay etched in my mind as one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited. It was a bit of a mission to get there but well worth it. My friend and I needed a break from our busy lives and was recommended this picturesque hideaway by a friend in Bali. We spent our week swimming in the crystal clear water, reading and relaxing in hammocks, snorkelling, playing beach bat and ball and sunbaking. The staff could not have been more polite and helpful, they were there to assist us with anything we needed. There was also three lovely resident dogs who kept us company. The food was a delicious, a credit to the friendly kitchen staff who spent a lot of time preparing it. We took a tour to one of the nearby islands to visit the local sea gypsies and then onto another island for sunset to watch the flocks of hornbills fly overhead. The owner Sylvie was extremely helpful in helping us with which flights and boat to catch and booking us our overnight stay in Ampana. She has certainly thought of everything to make your stay in the island unforgettable I hope I can return to Island Retreat in the near future.

This was an absolutely fantastis stay. If you're looking for a secluded place with lovely white-sand beach, turquoise sea, delicious food, peace and tranquility, look no more as this is the place. Located very close from Ampana (only 30-40 mins with speed boat which leaves you directly at the hotel's pier), the green paradise is a perfect getaway. My husband and I were surprised to see that this is actually is relatively small resort. All bungalows lie in front of a beautiful beach, have big verandas with hammock, comfortable bed and lovely traditional bathroom. They are surrounded by lush green vegetation with romantic coco palms all over. It gives a sense of privacy and intimacy. It's a quiet place, not accesible overland, only by boat. We spent most of our time snorkelling just in front of the resort. Whether you enter the water from the pier or directly from the beach, you will see lots of fish and nice coral. When not snorkeling, we would read on our veranda or chill out at the common open restaurant. The food was always fresh and delicious. We loved specially the fish - barbecued or fried. We had also delicacies like home-made pizza and french fries. A perfect mix of Indonesian and international cuisine. This is definitely not a place for perty-lovers and maybe that's why we enjoyed it so much. We were looking for a place where we could disconnect from the phone, computer and noise. Sylvie (the owner) created a magical place. Thank you for letting us have this experience!

We have spent 4 nights in the place with our 2 kids: 11 and 13 and they and us really enjoyed the stay. We came from so many days around the island and those were our last 4 days of the long trip. We were incredibly surprised with the wonderful cooking of Silvie and Rosa. We left the Nasi Goreng and Mia Goreng behind and we tasted her wonderful mexican dishes, hindu cuisine, italian spaguettis and amazing soupes! Thanks Silvie to give us this present! The cottages with excellent views from the hammock and the bathroom very very basic but we knew that previously.

We stayed 8 full days. We did some spectacular dives, the food was excellent and we were very happy with the honey moon cottage. The beach in front of the resort is nice and the snorkeling is good. It's a good option for families with kids and people who are looking for a quiet place to stay.

I have been in Island Retret with 7 friends from Germany. We enjoyed in this resort for two and half days. Room and meal are in one package but water not inlude. There are no signal and Internet so we are really disconetting with busy world and forgotten for all task in office. In front of the resort we can also do snorkling with various fish and coral. We did not need a boat because it is very close. However, we also bougt package for snorkling for a diffrent place to see diffrent view. Food is very nice. We got nice fish, pitza, rice, etc. Bedroom is quit big with muscito net. All guest have own resort wit seaview. There are mo connection road with ather place in the island. All transport should do trough boat. Staff of the resort are very friendly and responds very quict for our requet. Stay in the resort you will feel sleep in paradise.

Island retreat is located 2h away from Ampana by boat, and 2,5h from Wakai. The beach seems paradisiacal but its full of sea plants and garbage (and no one was cleaning it). Bungalows consited in a bed, a terrace with sea view and an indonesian style bathroom (no shower, just a bucket with water and a toilet). It was clean, although my advise is not to bring food to the bungalow. Food was good, staff was nice and professional. It is posible to do snorckle and diving (material for snorckling was a bit old). It was quite and peacefull, but overpriced. The biggest mistake I found was that, even the garbage in the beach was visible, no one was cleaning it!

Island Retreat was a great experience. We've a wonderfull week. The food was amazing. The fish directly from the sea. Sylvie, the owner, is a very special woman with humor, stories and special interest for nature/environment. Together with Rosa see prepaired excellent lunches and diners. Island Retreat isn't a luxury resort. Electricity a few ours a day, only natural airco and no hot shower but mandi (Indonesian way). So coming to this small paradise you don't get anything else than promised. Just relaxing, snorkling or diving, make fun with other visites, make some excursions, watching stars and listening to the sound coming from the tropical forest or the sea. The wooden houses were functional, clean and just a few meters from the sea. Sylvie and here staff did everything to make our stay pleasant. Knowing you are in Indonesia you've to except that the external organization isn't the western standard. You've to wait sometimes for a boat to pick you up. Don't go there if you want to hang on to the western way of live. Compared with other places on the Togean Island it's more expensive but it's worth it. Living in nature, direct on the borders of the forest, you can hear or see animals. Enjoy you stay. We'll come back in the near future

We ended up at Island Retreat as the Togian Islands was one of the few places where the 9 March 2016 Total Solar Eclipse could be viewed. As a group of 15 friends, we arrived at Island Retreat on 7 March and departed on 12 March, a total of 5 nights. Getting too the Togian Islands is a challenge. From Johannesburg South Africa, we had to fly to Singapore, then onto Makassar and from there to Luwuk. From Luwuk we travelled by vehicle for 6 hours to Ampana. Then we had to ferry for approximately 2.5 hrs to Island Retreat. And the flights are not seamless, so add in delays, transit time and overnight stops. We left Johannesburg at 14h00 on Friday 4 March and arrived at Island Retreat some 72 hours later. So in a world of frenetic business, limited leave and instant gratification, the Togian Islands are unlikely to be high on the destination agenda of those with limited time traveling from South Africa. In our view there were four real positives. 1. The Unspoiled Beauty. The Togian Islands (an archipelago of 56 islands and islets) are truly an Island Paradise with unbelievably good diving and snorkelling. The reef drop-off's and wall diving must be amongst the best in the world. The visibility is amazing and the array of mature coral is breath taking. We dived and snorkelled every day in near perfect conditions and only on one day did we see other divers and / or snorkelers. Good snorkelling is available from the end of the jetty at Island retreat. 2. The Catering. Notwithstanding the remoteness of the location, and the basic kitchen facilities available, the food generally was outstanding. 3 meals were served every day with a mix of local and other cuisines. There was always sufficient and too a person everybody was complimentary on this aspect. Beer is not readily available and the owner (Sylvie), went to some lengths to ensure that the beautiful sunsets were accompanies by a Bintang (the local beer) or 2. 3. The Logistics. The aspects of the trip that Island Retreat (Sylvie - the owner) arranged were seamless. This included the road transport from Luwuk, the boat transfer from Ampana as well as the daily boat for snorkelling and trips. Everything was on time and met expectations. 4. The Remoteness. No TV. No email. No connectivity. Limited power. You are cocooned from what is going on in the world. There are also many negatives. Although the wooden stilted accommodation units are quaint and of the Island style, there was some doubt about their cleanliness. The pillows and bed mattresses were not great. Our bed only had a mattress protector on when we arrived and we requested a clean sheet to sleep on. The available towels were threadbare and decidedly uninviting! The mosquito nets are the older thicker material type and are hot and grubby. There are very few creature comforts. The basic furniture is not comfortable to sit in and finding a comfortable chair in which to read a book will be a challenge. There is however a hammock on the veranda of each unit. The shower and toilet facilities are typical of rural Indonesia and involve a mandi shower. This in itself is no problem and is a refreshing and water conservation method of washing, however the toilet seats were grubby and stained. Maintenance is becoming an issue (door locks, window latches, aforementioned ablutions etc) and it is clear that if an effective intervention is not undertaken soon disrepair will become a deterrent to visitors. There is a general air that the resort is tired and not of the standard that it once was. Coupled with the eclipse, the other major reason to come to Island Retreat was the diving and snorkelling. Be aware that with regard to equipment hire, there is limited availability of equipment and you would be cautioned to ensure the exact nature and standard of equipment availability when booking. There does not appear to be a permanent dive master / instructor at Island Retreat. Sylvie arranged one on contract from Bali for the duration of our stay, but there were only 3 bcd’s regulators so a maximum of 4, including the dive master could scuba at any given time. Personally I think that the Island Retreat owners need to make a decision about where they want to position themselves in an increasingly competitive market. Notwithstanding the outstanding food, it appears to be sliding towards a backpacker’s destination but at mid-market prices. It will not take a lot to make this resort more appealing but the owners will need to decide and take the necessary action.
