The property grounds were nice. The pool was also small but clean and inviting (it was cold for me but refreshing). However, check in was complicated because we couldn't bring our heavy luggage down all the winding stairs and paths. We ended up leaving the luggage in the car and that was very uncomfortable and all our belongings were all over the car after fishing out the items for the night-no safe in the room. The bed was the worst of the 3 hotels we stayed at in Martinique. The room was sufficient but not very much water pressure. I requested a sea view for a celebration and it was there but obstructed. We checked out after 1 night. There was one restaurant in Tartane that was welcoming and the others just weren't because they were all booked. So food is hard to find. The sea is really nice and the hiking awesome. This hotel is probably rated high for back packers. There was a nice younger man at the desk who tried to help with translating to English as our French is limited (I tried to study it but lost it in stressful situations). There is a property cat who is really sweet.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to let us know your appreciations! First of all we are really sorry for all the worries you have encountered. Usualy when it's too complicated, on request we are happy to help our customers down their luggages because we are aware that the stairs are many and we do not hide it, what a pity you have not said anything. Also, a safe is available for guests at the reception, this on request ... again a pity that you have not made the request. Concerning the restoration, Tartane small village of the commune of Trinité counts 8 restaurants, 6 snacks, 1 pizzeria and 3 places where you can order meals to choose to take away. All are displayed in the information book available to all our customers at the reception level and their horraires and phone number if you want to book. Sorry that this was not enough. Anyhow we hope this does not spoil your stay in Martinique because the main thing is that you had a good holiday on our island. The Résidence Océane and its team thank you for your comment !!! We appreciate and take into account your remarks to advance and satisfy our customers better !!! Greetings! The Océane team

We stayed here for 3 nights to experience a different part of Martinique (we've come to this island every year since our first trip in 2008). We were lucky to be put into a room off the lobby with a SPECTACULAR view. The unit was small but updated and very clean. The view was fabulous, though lower units would simply see trees. Though the nearby beaches aren't suited to non-swimmers and the town is nothing grand, the hotel was quite nice and exceeded our expectations.

We really enjoyed staying here, and did so for four nights upon our arrival in Martinique (easy drive from the airport - even in the dark). We asked for a calm studio and were given one, which we appreciated. We only had one neighbour. The studio was clean, simple but with everything we needed, including a nice bathroom and a splendid terrace with a magnificient view. We also loved the pool where we swam every morning before breakfast and at night, in the warm darkness it is magical. We catered for our own breakfast, and when we went the price of the studio was very reasonable. The staff (special mention to Bettina) were lovely and very helpful and courteous and did all they could to help us (extra towels, recommendations and phone calls to restaurants, .....) Nice beach (but more for surfing than swimming next to the hotel. Good for hiking the beautiful Caravelle trail, but also Pointe Rouge and the little town of Tartane is good for shopping (you can buy food at a local little restaurant and heat it up in the evening: cheap, easy and delicious; there is also a good bakery) So we would certainly go again

Stayed in the hotel for two days, we were really impressed by quality of rooms and amazing view. There is an surf school nearby which is very convenient. We also took a hiking route close to the hotel which was perfect.

We stayed a few nights at this hotel and were truly dissapointed. The service is nonexistant and we payed over 150€ per night for a room that reminded me of school trips somewhere in the woods. The internet was not working and our room was smelly and full of bugs. There is no Bar, no Restaurant - nothing you would expect from a hotel. It is more like a hostel with high prices.

Response from Hôtel O, Directeur général at Residence Oceane Hotel
Responded 28 Aug 2017

Nice smallish room with a very good sized balcony/kitchen/eating area. Everything we needed to cook, a rather large sized fridge and a great view. Lots of steps to deal with but that is just the geography of Martinique. My wife and I spent six days here and we still had a few things on our list we didn't get to Next to a national park with some spectacular hiking trails, a three minute walk to a beautiful beach (best swim entry is all the the way to the left or south end of the beach) Great bakery in town opens around 6 am close 6 pm ,highly recommended.

Booked on Expedia. Foresight to contact hotel a week before trip. They had never heard of us. Expedia ghosted us, wouldn't help. I called hotel directly to arrange. Please consider downloading an app called maps.me and while at home, zoom in on Martinique, download the map to your phone/IPad/tablet. The most accurate offline maps I've seen. Really helps find hotel. Parking lot is on top of a hill. Walk down about 10 steps to reception, check in 2:30. Free coffee, but breakfast 10 euros/day each, for light food. We had 2 rooms. See photos for property map. Room 23 was on lobby level. Room 15 was 5 steps down. Room 15 had queen size bed, and a single bed. Room 23 had a bunk bed in 1 room, and a queen in the other. Units built into a hillside. Pool below the lobby. Walk down more steps, and there is a code gate, opens to a public parking area for beach (surfers beach, part of Anse Bonneville, I believe). Road from hotel parking lot descends to this lot. Free wifi was good. Loved the kitchen, see photo. Rooms have:microwave, fridge with 2 bottled water, coffee maker with filters, dishes/glasses, salt. Wash bin, trash bin. 2 burner stove, pans. Sink. Tv, AC, wifi. Clothes drying rack, patio table. Bathroom with shower only, and no outlets. Higher rooms have better beach view. Pool: no longer open 24/7. Lighted til about 11pm, closes 10:30. No lifeguard. Not heated, can feel cool. 7 chaise lounges, rinse shower. Wildlife; resident cat, wanders the property, friendly. Small birds visit the patio every morning. They will eat anything they can find left out, including fruit, bananas, crackers, etc. very tame. Crabs, small ( and large!) live in the rocks around the stairs. Tree frogs can be noisy at night. You can hear the surf from each room. Security: coffee area & front desk locked up about 7 pm until morning. Feels safe here, not many people around in public areas after 8 pm. You have several keys on key ring. The locks are stiff, not real secure. You enter room via patio. Must lock the door to keep constant breeze from blowing it open. We locked door from patio into room while out. Relaxing stay. You could walk up the road to restaurant Le Phare, which has a bar, patio, maybe 5 min walk. Bring groceries from Vito gas station market in Tartane (5 min drive) or other food. Bring coffee, microwave popcorn. Bring hair dryer & shampoo if needed. You could bring something to secure the patio door, or grab a rock off the hillside to prop it closed.smoking allowed on patios. Not good for wheelchairs due to all the steps. Message me for any other info.

These are the positives. This place is more like an apartment complex than a hotel. It offers many positives and a few negatives. Our room for a week had a kitchenette on a balcony, overlooking an incredibly beautiful view of green hills, orange cliffs and turquoise sea in cove with constant crashing waves. We could eat lunch and dinner on the balcony, facing that beautiful view. We took the generous continental breakfasts, at an extra cost of 10 euros p.p. per day. Well worth it, although the coffee was bad. We were glad to cook most of our own meals, with food that we bought in the huge Carrefour grocery store in nearby Trinite’ (15 minutes away). Any food that we could buy in Paris was there. The residence is built on three floors along a steep hillside. My wife has difficulty walking up stairs, so we asked for a room that was easily accessible (meaning at the top of the hill and next to the breakfast place & reception desk). A pool was situated on the middle level. All the personnel were particularly friendly and helpful. A young woman manager spoke English, to help guests who did not speak French. These are the negatives. The residence is at the end of a dangerous, sharply curving road, which was pitch black at night. It was scary for senior citizens like us, although young people might not worry about it. That is one reason that we preferred to cook our own dinners. The beach at the bottom of the hill was really one for surfboarders, with a slim stretch of sand and powerful waves. (We could hear the waves crashing ashore all night!) One inconvenience was that our bedroom was very tight, in part because it was set up with a second, separate bedroom with bunk beds for children. However, I was able to see other rooms at a lower level that were much bigger and set up differently, with a roll-out bed for children. Our room had a very narrow bathroom, with a tiny corner shower, having a broken, floppy showerhead. Our bottom line. This place is lovely, inexpensive place to stay for a week to use to explore the island.

My friend and I stayed in a studio room at the hotel this January. The room has simple furnishings- a closet with hangers, bed and a shower with hot water. The best part is the outdoor kitchen and balcony that are perfect for this Caribbean paradise. The two burner stove top was perfect for our cooking needs and a nice size fridge held our goods for the week. The unit comes with plates, silverware and pans so you're all set. We cooked our breakfast and lunches here each day- it made it convenient to come up from the beach or pool when hungry or needing a break from the sun. The balcony views can't be beat from the room we had (top floor- even with the lobby) as we had ocean and pool views- exactly what you would want for a view in the Caribbean. Pool- clean and gets sun until about 2 pm Ocean- right down a short path from the hotel. I had no problem with the hill or any of the stairs in the hotel but if you have knee problems or trouble with stairs this wouldn't be the place for you. I had read trip advisor reviews before coming so expected the beach to be small and good for surfers- this was true as a small surf competition was happening on our first day. Wifi- only works in lobby for the most part Reception- no staff from 7:30pm-7:30am so if you have questions or need to pay or check out early/late you will have to plan to do it before they leave. Minimal English- enough to get by, which is expected as we are in a French speaking country. We speak no French so It was nice to have some English for some quick questions we had! Location- good if you like to hike as mangroves and cliff hikes are nearby. Only a few restaurants in the area. It is pretty secluded you WILL need a car if you plan on going pretty much anywhere- which we knew in advance so that saved us! Grocery is about 15 minutes away. Overall great hotel, good for people who like to do their own thing, want access to a kitchen and don't need 5 star amenities.

If you are in Martinique, make sure you spend at least half of your time at the Oceane, whether you are traveling as a couple/family, traveling with kids or traveling with friends. If you are involved in water sports, the Oceane is the place to be. This trip was my first in Martinique and there will be many more; Residence Oceane will be where I will stay. The only potential negative about this place would be the fact that the front desk closes at 8:00 PM but I understand this is typical for the area. Also, I was told that the complementary wi-fi may not work well in suite 23, where I was, but in the bedroom I was able to place audio calls on FaceBook and whatsapp with no problem. So, go ahead: book/visit Residence Oceane for your trip to Martinique and enjoy your stay.
