Stayed there for 2 nights to do the doubtful sound cruise and felt very comfortable there. Sure, you will always find something to improve (like the worn-out furniture on the verandas), but I had a lovely stay and Jimmy, the owner, is such a friendly and helpful guy, felt like coming home when I arrived there. Thumbs up and I...

I got to Freestone in a serendipitous way. I was heading elsewhere and had not been able to secure lodging when I picked up a Finnish woman hitchhiker headed toward Te Anau. Somehow we ended up calling Freestone Backpackers in Manipouri (Te Anau was sold out) to find her a place and the owner had a bed for my hitchhiker,...

Jimmy the owner offers great mountain views from some private rooms at his back packer lodge but beware of Jimmy the seamster. He wants $120 in cash before you inspect his room, just see the view from the deck. Then he disappears and your are left with no towels or toilet and no where to find them.. His Air B&B...

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. I'm Jimmy’s ex- partner and feel to clarify a few things said. I could say nasty things, but one thing I can say for sure he has always been a fantastic host and I admire his work ethic. With 70 he’s running the whole place alone now as Backpackers...

If you get to stay at Freestone, consider yourself lucky. Jimmy is an amazing and sweet host, and built all of the cabins by hand. I stayed in one cabin with a friend our first night in New Zealand on our way to Milford Sound and it was exactly what we needed: we woke refreshed and relaxed with birdsong exploding...

Mum and teenage sons spent several days based here as we explored this part of the country from Milford and Doubtful Sounds down to Lake Hauroko. Heron Lodge provided comfortable beds for all with a stunning view over Lake Manapouri. All the kitchen stuff we needed was there, the bathroom block always clean with hot showers and Jimmy a convivial...

We stayed one night in a double cabin (fantail) in September on our way to Doubtful Sound. Was nice and warm with the pot belly stove. Great bed with nice linens and a spectacular view in the morning of the mountains across lake Manapouri. Kitchenette had all the needed pots and pans to cook with. Bathrooms were spotless. Definitely recommend...

When I arrived I was offered either one of the normal hostel rooms or to stay in the spare room in his house. At first I said the hostel rooms as they look like amazing little cabins with seats outside and a fire pit with wood. However I then saw inside Jimmy's AMAZING house he built himself and instantly changed...

We stayed for two days. The cabins are clean, basic and rustic but that is their charm. Located in a hill side with views across the valley to the mountains beyond. The cabins have wood burning stoves and there is an ample supply of logs so you can stay warm on cooler evenings. Relax on the deck in the evenings...

It was clean, and the beds were pretty comfortable. We stayed two nights in different rooms with our Milford trek in between.(so really any bed was going to feel great) I think the big problem here is that the family is split up or splitting up and no one is putting much care into the business at the moment. It...

I spent 2 weeks in Freestone in winter 2013 and i had an amazing time. Our cabin was great, very cosy and clean and from the front porch you could see the lake and fjords in the distance. Kerstin and Jimmy are lovely hosts. Definately recommend to everyone who loves the nature and would like to experience something different!
