Our trip was so lovely! Etienne and Didier were incredible hosts. They cooked a great breakfast and served a delicious dinner every night! The whole stay was made sweeter by their cute dog, Poyo, who greeted us every time we arrived at the property. We will absolutely stay at Samana if we come back to Guadeloupe!
We had a fabulous stay at L'Habitation Cafeiere in the Cottage. We stayed in "Le Cottage" which is apart from the other buildings providing great privacy. The property's setting is magnificent...the photos do not do it justice with incredible views of the ocean and mountains. Furthermore, the location in Pointe Noire is excellent for exploring Basse Terre - right in the middle of the western coast and also relatively convenient to making trips to Grande Terre. Didier and Etienne are excellent hosts - they have helpful lists of local recommendations. Their homecooked meals are also excellent and provide a great chance to chat with the hosts and other guests.
This place is simply beautiful, and the owners thought of every detail. Thumbs up for the ecologically conscious approach. Very lovable animal housemates, as well :) We also enjoyed the fact to have English-spoken hosts, who took the time to show us around the garden and whose table d’hôte was simple and delicious.
Staying at the Samana Beusejour is a treat you will NOT regret. Its a stunning guesthouse, formerly a coffee plantation, run by two gems of human beings, Etienne and Didier. Their attention to detail, to the magnificent elements of the space, the rooms, the common areas, the pool - everything is inspired by the remarkable landscape in which you will find yourselves. But they are more than just hoteliers - they have considered in every decision they make, the history of their land, of the country...their bookshelves (from which you can and should borrow) piled with information from stories of slavery, to rum, to the local traditions and cuisine. You can definitely pop down the hill for dinners on the nights they don't do their table d'hôtes, but if you want to be spared the decision-making and benefit from thoughtful, joyous and splendidly gourmet 4-course meals (passionfruit rum galore to start as an aperitif not to be missed!), make sure you take their tables d'hôtes that re of amazing value. You will lavish in the long, vibrant meals with Didier, Etienne and other guests in spectacular settings, eating their perfect takes on local cuisine and just forgetting your everyday life while laughing, drinking and being swept away by the ambiance. Every night after my days at the beaches or scuba diving (beautiful beaches are a 15-minute drive or 30-mins up the coast for more options that are equally if not more stunning), I would come back and watch the setting sun over the infinity pool, hop into my private hot tub (take the Suite Chevalier George if you can!), shower and return downstairs fresh, sun-soaked and relaxed for the evening. Note - the hills approaching the guesthouse are STEEP and the roads winding all over the Basse Terre of Guadeloupe. Driving manual cars is highly recommended if you can or make sure you shift down to climb those turns. It's a haven, an escape, a tropical space nestled between towering mist-filled mountains and the never-ending sea, a tranquil (child-free) space - and I mean that affectionately as I was a tired mom just needing a little me-time (a momcation as I may or may not have coined). Do not hesitate and BOOK here. Quelle magnifique expérience - 1000 mercis à Didier et Étienne. Que j'ai hâte de retourner -- I cannot WAIT to go back.…
Habitation Cafeiere Samana Beausejour was for us an incredible experience. Didier and Etienne had only one concern from the beginning: our vacation should be unique! Their paradise is a little hidden in the slopes of the west coast of Basse-Terre with a magnificent view of the Caribbean, but is easily accessible by rental car. The welcome by the two hosts and their four-legged friend was extremely warm, so you immediately feel at home in this hidden jewel. The entire complex is very tastefully designed and extremely well maintained. A highlight is the infinity pool, which immediately invites you to swim and dream. Didier and Etienne's bond with this paradise is evident in their loving care of the property. History, nature and art combine here to create an authenticity we have rarely experienced before. Welcome to the Caribbean, welcome to Guadeloupe! There are several accommodations of different sizes distributed on the property. All are very furnished with attention to detail and form a harmonious unit with the property and the island. We enjoyed every morning to look from the room over the property to the sea. There wasn’t absolutely anything missing! Didier and Etienne are perfect hosts. Even before we arrived, they kept giving us recommendations for a great vacation and every morning at breakfast there were new tips for the day, which we gladly accepted due to the special situation that prevailed during our stay on the island. We were thus able to experience the versatility of Basse-Terre and returned home full of beautiful memories. Spending a day at the beach, snorkeling and diving in the Caribbean, hiking in the tropical forest to waterfalls or on the still active volcano, bathing in thermal springs and much more can be easily done while staying at this accommodation. Didier's and Etienne's tips were always spot on, even when it came to restaurant recommendations. But for that matter, Table d'Hôtes must not to be missed! The combination of traditional and local cuisine and the hospitality shown by Didier and Etienne were one of a kind. Thanks Didier and Etienne for the wonderful days we had at Habitation Cafeiere Samana Beausejour! A must for anyone looking for a perfect individual vacation!…
This is 3rd time I am resubmitting this review as its bouncing back that included too many locations - I guess useful things aren't meant to be included... so hopefully this gets approved and you will benefit from this review, as I intended it to; This was our 4th hotel and last leg of the 2 week trip between Martinique and Guadeloupe - a place I was looking forward the most, to wrap it up in a romantic and serene atmosphere this French West Indies trip - while a small part was spoiled by the November 2021 riots in Guadeloupe I must say the Samana (as we would call with my wife) gave us this final feeling of escape and unplugging from our every day life life, and quite frankly from the crazy reality on the island at the time - if we get a chance to return to Guadeloupe it would be this place that I would want to return to, for various reasons written below, is I still have your attention. Normally I don't do this but this one is different - if I may, I recommend having the dinner with Didier and Etienne the sooner the better - we waited until the very last night and I thought it was a wonderful "ice breaker" that would give you the absolute best and full experience here - see below under "Food & restaurant options" for more on this. Location: so the drive normally would take you a bit under an hour if you head through the mountains (super nice road and easy ride, we took it on the way back to the airport on our final day) but we split our stay in Guadeloupe between Basse Terre and Grand Terre at two different locations - and in all fairness I would still do so if I turned back the time but! I would switch an extra night to Basse Terre instead of Grand Terre as there is simply way more to visit/do/check out on this side of Guadeloupe than on Grand Terre -- perfect for exploring the island location/stay or if you simply want to escape from "reality" and "hide away from the rest of the world" - closest town is about 5 minutes drive north you need a pharmacy for a COVID return test - also easy drive up north you have the beautiful sandy beaches Room: I believe we stayed in what is officially called LA GUESTROOM - it's in the main building where the owners reside as well - we enjoyed it a lot, very nicely decorated, fridge in the room, A/C that for the first time we have never USED!!! you are in the higher elevation so it's much cooler and breezier - quite the contrary the first time ever I put socks on while in the Caribbeans :) and had the hoody once or twice in the evening/super early morning - a very cool "literally" experience :) the unlimited fresh filtered water was a very welcome benefit, so was the welcome Ti Punch rhum cocktail DIY set up with the rhum refill of Bologne's finest. Bed was great, so were the pillows (mosquito nest present but not needed during our November stay, no bugs other than lizards "in the room" :) the shower with in house organic shampoo/shower gel and soap - the scent was outstanding!!! Plenty of windows to open to let the fresh mountain breezes in - loved it! I also loved chilling on the outside patio with chairs in the morning and observing the humming birds visiting the flowers right next to out room - absolutely hypnotizing! In house water is filtered and available for free refills FYI - this is a very green and self sustainable property! Hotel Grounds: getting here isn't tough but it certainly ain't easy - I want to be very honest and I would say that getting here takes some effort and so does getting out/down the mountain but this price you "pay" is for what the grounds of the hotel have to offer - you are very very high and in the front you have the ocean and in the back an actually big drop hidden behind bushes in the mountain elevation - stunning therefore 360 degrees views! The swimming pool was one of my favorite ever - the views, tranquility, nature - I am still captivated by it! The rooms all lead via pathways to the center area - the breakfast/bar/gathering place where all guests get to meet and greet - also, where the cocoa tree grows!!! It's crazy I visited St Lucia and the like to see a Cocoa Tree and here it grows right in the breakfast area - absolutely stunning ground, views, place! Did I fail to mention to the boxer doggie Poyo by now? I used to have a boxer back in Poland and this guy brought back so many great memories - he is just like my good old doggie, like a kid that never grew up :) yep, that's boxers! They are in a never-ending "puppy/child age stage," always full of energy and want to play, steal your flip flips, shoes etc. yep I warned you and so will Didier and Etienne :) Also, I would have forgotten - there are 2 funny cats on the property, not a cat person here but seeing them playing was very pleasant - they get a long so well with the doggie as well! One of the cats looks like the Grumpy Cat! :) Swimming pool: what can I say that you wouldn't assume already by looking at the pictures? I loved it! It's saltwater, it's in the peaceful area of the highlands, occasional butterflies during the day time and birds at night "dropping by" make it even more of a special experience - the only thing I would add as a cherry on the top is Poyo, the boxer doggie living on the property stopping by every now and then to drink some water - he is absolutely awesome :) used to have a boxer back in Poland and if there is one thing to be said about that breed is that these guys are a "kid" all their live, so expect energy, fun, expect silly, goofy and friendly behavior - NEVER BE AFRAID OF A BOXER, they are a child at heart all their lives and the nicest dogs out there! :) I miss that Poyo guy as I miss my old boxer from many years ago! The swimming pool area is a must every night for some amazing sunsets - serene, peaceful, romantic. Food & restaurant options: the breakfast area is where people get together each morning and can meet face to face, every room has a place at the big table and its own reusable cloth napkins (loved the reusable idea, very green oriented property overall!!), the coffee, the juices, the home made cakes, the home made jams I could be raving about it and still you need to try it to know how amazing they are! Etienne, especially, is very hard on himself but he just whips put these amazing breakfasts and the attention to details is just... is FRENCH! That's the the biggest compliment I think I could give a person, the attention to details is French! So even though he sometimes feels like things could be better, trust me you will love! There is a reason why French cuisine is so well known and respected around the world, and here it shows why! Now, to the options etc. - I highly recommend having the dinner with the Etienne and Didier the sooner the better - was it the best absolute food-wise meal I had ever? No. Was it great? For certain! So why do I say this? Well, I say this is because that's what many of us got used to - dinner being just food and here dinner is what the TRUE DINNER should be about - it brings all of us to the table, it's the cocktails and appetizers before, the conversation, the get-to-know each other, the sharing the table - we did it during our last dinner where we needed to get up at 4AM in the morning next day so take my advice and do it the right way - do it the first day you arrive, get to know your hosts, they are a great couple of people who really put their heart into this and are still like you human, have a past life, experiences and lifetime to discuss and share with you and want to learn your side of the story - from the bottom of my heart Didier and Etienne, especially, I wish I turned back time and did this on the first night rather our last night! :) As to the other places in this area of the island, go explore your points of interest and check out what Base Terre has to offer - this is French West Indies, Creole & French cuisines combined so just research and explore what's there as you can't go really wrong! (I left some reviews for places we visited separately) Things to do: I love rhum/rum/ron! Needless to say we went from to the Rhum Museum and Distillery Raimonenq as I love rhum and other than 10 distilleries in Martinique a week before, I ended up seeing 4 ones while in Guadeloupe (except for Bologne :( which was my top of the list and sadly because of the riots and road blockades I didn't get to see, nor the Vanibel coffee plantation :(((... we had seen the Distillery Longueteau, Montobello, the lighthouse in Old Fort (Vieux Fort), tried to see Banana Museum in the south on the way here but it was closed, we had seen both Grand Anse beaches, the one in the north of Basse Terre as the one in the south, we attempted to see Forth Delgres during our "still COVID" November 2021 trip but no luck... Basse Terre is a one big playground, waterfalls, hiking, beaches, vanilla farms, coffee farms, rhum distilleries, you name it it has it all! Overall: despite all of the dramas surrounding the local uprisings and road blocks during our November 2021 trip this place alone would be the reason why I would return to Guadeloupe and that speaks volume, it's just an oasis "away from it all" where you mind and soul regenerates and breathes, an essence to what I seek in traveling and being away "from home" :) thanks Etienne, Didier, and Poyo for hosting us! :)…
As a first-time traveler to Guadeloupe, I cannot imagine a more beautiful introduction to this island. Etienne and Didier's hilltop property is simply stunning and located on the most beautiful side of the island. Their lush gardens are beautiful and pictures simply don't do it justice. We spent almost every night lounging in the infinity pool, watching the sunset in perfect silence. More importantly than the location, Didier and Etienne are excellent hosts. This was one of the most personal experiences I've ever had during an international stay. As experienced locals, they have so much knowledge to share about the island. Don't miss out on dining with their Table d'Hôtes service... They are amazing chefs and the local Caribbean/French cuisine is divine. When you're visiting, make sure to spend adequate time exploring the Basse-Terre side of the island where the bed and breakfast is located. We loved snorkeling and wading at the Petit-Anse beach, just 15 minutes from the property. Long story short... If you're looking for the perfect introduction to Guadeloupe, stay here!…
We stayed 11 nights with Didier and Etienne and enjoyed every minute. The room was spotless clean, the high quality decoration is chosen with lots of love and you can see their eye for detail everywhere on the estate. The garden is an oasis of calm and the views of the ocean by the invinity pool are breath taking, especially (but not only) at sundown. In the evenings we enjoyed the Table d’hôte and the quality and the taste of the dishes were superb. Didier and Etienne make you feel like staying with friends, they have given us always good recommendations for restaurants, beaches, excursions.... If you are looking for a high quality, boutique lifestyle place in Guadeloupe, you will fall in love with la Habitation Cafeiere Samana Beau sejour. Thanks for the great time! Ernst & Tobias…
This property is a dream come true. Spectacular views, infinity pool, tastefully decorated rooms, a tropical and lush garden,... Didier and Etienne make great hosts and serve a nice breakfast and dinner. We had the suite and loved the jacuzzi on the terrace. Samana is located ideally to explore the whole west coast with its amazing beaches. Make sure to get home in time to enjoy the sunset from the pool...
Nestled in the mountains, Habitation Cafeiere Samana Beausejour is a rare gem. The views are stunning, overlooking both the mountains and sea. The decor is artful and well balanced with the breathtaking natural beauty of the property and gardens. Honestly, one of the best breakfasts I have had anywhere. Etienne and Didier are warm and accommodating, quick to provide their guests with any request. We opted for the dinner option 3 times since the selection of wine and food was better than the local restaurants. The rooms have all the amenities you need and the bed was very comfortable. Magical and Charming!
