Detailed Reviews
We went up to Secret Garden as a family with three children 8 - 13 for a short break. The children had fun and their father got some needed exercise which means that we would go again. I'm not sure how much we paid as my wife deals with that. 3 1/2 drive on good roads from North Eastern Beijing including one pitstop.
Our trip was after the Chinese New Year holiday but with the Chinese school holidays still on-going so there were a lot of children around.
In more detail:
- the hotel was very conveniently arranged. I've skied a lot in Europe where I'm used to having to drive or walk to the bottom of the ski lifts. This was very easy by comparison which is a big positive with three fairly young children.
- its just misleading to refer to this as a 5 Star hotel, it isn't, I'm not sure where that rating came from but it isn't. The building construction is good, the skiing is very convenient and the rooms were fine but neither the rooms nor the service nor the food were at 5 star level.
- rooms: clean and functional. Free WIFI. Good large bath with water that runs hot and fast which is a big plus point. Comfortable beds. Good temperature control. No cleanliness issues. Small cooking area that would enable you to prepare simple food yourself. All in all the rooms were fine but not luxurious. If you ignored the fact that you are there primarily to ski then it would be a good international standard 3 star.
- The swimming pool is nice although the hot pools were not working when we were there. The changing rooms were a little bit on the small side. Its a pity that the pool is completely indoor, I always enjoy an indoor / outdoor pool when skiing.
- We didn't use the gym but it looked good, much better than a typical hotel gym.
- There is a LOT of unused shop and entertainment type space on the ground floor. There seems to be a mis-match in the design of the building between the number of rooms in the hotel and the amount of shop space on the ground floor.
- Restaurants. We ate in the breakfast / lunch buffet place, in the "Old Beijing" hot pot and in the Sichuan restaurant. All of these were fine in the context of taking three children skiing but had I had more of a romantic getaway in mind they would have been disappointing. The breakfast buffet needs to be taken up a notch - for example the waiter or waitress should find you a table and bring you your tea or coffee as they do at most breakfast buffets. Here we had to find our own table. Running out of coffee is a bit of crisis at breakfast time. Fortunately my clever wife had anticipated this and brought a coffee machine from home to install in our room. Probably the food which we enjoyed the most were the jiaozi and hundun which we bought in the ski lobby area. All in all the food was ok and would not stop me going again but moderate your expectations. When I ski in Europe the food is one of the high points of the experience, here it was not (and I say this as an 18 year resident of Beijing who loves Chinese food).
- Ski hire and storage. Rental ski boots and skis seemed fine: I certainly had no issues with mine. The ski lobby is spacious and well organised. I've been skiing many times and this was the least work that I have ever had to do to get to the bottom of the slopes. The process might be a little confusing if you speak no Chinese but that is to be expected in China ...
- Skiing. This was the purpose of our trip and I was pleasantly surprised. No one should expect a huge ski area but it was more than adequate for a middle aged man who was a keen skier 25 years ago and 3 children at early to intermediate stages of learning. The slopes were, by European standards, almost empty and the lift queues very short. The chair lifts were great quality and comfortable. The slopes are focussed on the beginner and intermediate skier with little that I could see to challenge an advanced skier. The snow was lovely albeit heavily manicured and flattering to those of us with less than perfect technique.
I hope that the various resorts in this area get their act together and build interconnections so as to provide a larger ski area rather than remaining as separated walled gardens.
The children really loved their ski coaches. That was a big positive.
Some quick / easy fixes for management:
- more chairs at the bottom of the slopes outside the hotel so that we can sit and watch the slopes whilst we wait. Better still have staff ready to serve coffee, beer and hot chocolate to people sitting in these chairs. At the moment there is one bench. Nanshan outside Beijing does this much better.
- have staff show people to their tables at breakfast
- better coffee at breakfast
- get the hot pools by the main pool working. And, if the budget allows, add some hot pools outside - there is nothing like sitting in a hot pool, looking at the stars with cold air and snow around. If you can get someone to bring me a cocktail whilst I'm in that hot pool then you will have won me over completely :-)
- put a lift map / run map in the rooms
- find some ways to utilise some more of the empty space on the lobby level.

We went for a weekend.I suggest to spend there at least a minimum of two days (it's around 3h drive from Beijing). The slopes are intermediate level and short, there are some black ones (more like red ones in Europe). If you like skiing is good place to escape from the city and enjoy a relaxed weekend.
We didn't go to the hotel in the station but one in the town, there is also a music bar and some nice restaurants. Since we went with a snowboard club we had our own bus but I saw there is a shuttle bus from the town to the station.

The Genting Grand Secret Garden is a new resort opened up in 2012 mostly for ski enthusiasts. The facility is listed as 5 star but it still has a long way to go to reach that standard that is expected of a 5 star listing. The family rooms which offer kitchenette including an electric element for cooking as well as bunk beds for kids are really great. In the evenings we had the problem of smoke from adjacent rooms seeping into our rooms which would then force us to open the windows and freeze for a time! The ski facilities are also great with bunny hills for beginners and children as well as tubing. The runs are great but poorly labelled so it is hard to tell which one is beginner/intermediate or advanced. There is also problem with ski equipment as my husband found that the ski failed to come off as he fell on the slope which could cause severe injury. The swimming pool was out of order which was a disappointment considering the high prices they charge on weekends. It is a good facility to stay at but far from its over rated listing.

Amazing views. Huge family rooms. Very clean. Several restaurants downstairs, including a Starbucks. Modern facilities. Activities beside skiing. We came in the summer but can only imagine it would be even more fun in ski season. Definitely recommend.

Spent Christmas weekend with family and friends. Booked three rooms. This is supposed to be a five star resort. Also the venue for the 2022 Winter Olympics. 1. Shocking check in - it is supposedly an international venue and only one person at front desk who can speak understandable English? 2. Room quality is average at best. Hand shower leaks and gets the entire bathroom wet - no attention paid to correct this in three days? Shampoo and shower gel not refilled after cleaning - had to phone housekeeping and get transferred 4 times to get to someone who can speak English! Family room with two coffee sachets? 3. TV - no English channels despite the card stating there are such channels. Only displays "Dish" when those channels are selected - clearly not functioning. 4. Shocking rates for ski training - close on RMB2000 for three hours with a trainer for a group of three? Guys get real! 5. Restaurants over Christmas weekend - two to choose from for dinner. Blue lagoon restaurant - no wine per glass available despite the menu stating this. Can only buy per bottle. Old Beijing restaurant - never any local Tsingtao beer despite it being available at the bar and listed on the menu - no we get told two nights in a row that we must order the more expensive Carlsberg which we refused to do. Miraculously Tsingtao appeared after a fight. Two nights in a row? The waitresses are rude and incompetent - they knock over a full beer over a fresh full plate of dumplings, want to charge us for the beer and gave us the beer soaked dumplings back after draining the beer from the plate. Only after a fight the charge for the beer was removed. On night two we were told to please finish as the staff had no transport after 10:20. We paid full price but were told to hurry? What standard is this? 6. After the disappointing dinner we returned only for room key not to work. Upon enquiry (now after 10:30pm, tired after a long day of skiing) a rude front desk clerk said the key won't work because we must increase the deposit. We depart the following morning and everything where we could spend money is closed?? In addition another worker said the deposit is fine but the rude one was insistent. Another fight. In a time that is supposed to be special and peaceful. Is this how we treat paying 5 star customers? 7. Finally, breakfast - is this a five star ski resort or a school dorm? Plastic cups? Dirty tableware? Oily food? Dirty floors? It is like eating in a field kitchen complete with food coupons! And don't dare having the coupon with the wrong date - that gets you horrible treatment. No, no, no! How does one travel three hours from beautiful Beijing, pay a premium and get this treatment? Then one coffee shop with no snacks because they ran out? What a pity. A looooong road to travel to five star guys! Such a beautiful resort spoilt by such basic mistakes. Sad. And then not even a name or email address for the General Manager to be found anywhere in the room or on the website. Unhappy customers therefore have to resort to Tripadvisor. So sad to write this. Secret garden please realise: not all foreigners are tourists! Some have made Beijing their home and are proud to live in China! Why spoil Christmas when we bring friends to show off our new home that we love and are proud of? Please fix it!

Entry and exit to the area where these resorts reside costs total 130RMB (20$) both charged as 65rmb on entry and exit. So if you are coming with your car from Beijing, including the toll gates, you pay in total around 240RMB (40$) just to be able to access the resort, insane.
Then 4 hours of pass including ski rental for 2 persons costs 1700rmb (300USD). Only the front desk is friendly, the rest is unwelcoming, typical for China. Rental pants and jackets were not really clean. Equipment was okay but could have been better maintained.
Like any other person on a ski holiday, if you look forward to having a drink at the mountain bar while watching the scenery, well don't, because they don't sell alcohol. It's the most unadult way to ensure the safety of people.
Base lounge restaurant is only for hotel residents with a card, if you'd like to purchase food they ask you to leave.
So we ended up having our drinks sitting in the parking lot then left.
It ends up being a real dull experience and overall not really fun.

we drove up Saturday and back Sunday from Beijing. Generally agree with the comments below, skiing is well organised but the slopes are groomed flat so a bit boring after 2 days. The hotel is nice, in case your aree xpecting lots of stuff in the kitchen such as wineglasses or any sort of plates and cooking things, just take your own. There is no system to borrow or get access to them, especially f your Chinese is not good.
Also, check which restaurants are open and book in advance, we had a nice meal at the reasonably priced Chinese restaurant, and breakfast wasn't bad either.
The ski rental gear is really good quality, and the system works pretty well. The queues for the chair and gondola are not well organised but weren't very long, so got plenty of runs in.
There was rather a lot of smoking going on on the non-smoking floor, but the rooms are nice and the beds comfy. we were excited to see a balcony jacuzzi bath, but disappointed that it wasn't connected up.
The trip back was smooth until we hit the traffic jams at Badaling and finished up nearly 5 hours on the road back to Sanlitun!

We are a family of four: 2 adults, two children (10 years old and 1 year old). We stayed 3 nights. This is supposed to be a 4 or 5 star resort. Also the venue for the 2022 Winter Olympics. I don’t understand how it will become a venue to the olympics. The hotel has a long way to go... It was a pure disappointment, a complete reap-off. We spent 2,600 RMB per night over Chinese New Year, really not worth the money, unless you absolutely want to stay at the foot of the ski slopes (the ski is very convenient) and have a nice bed to sleep at night and not expect to take a nice shower.
POSITIVES:
- the king bed is comfortable
- walking distance from your room to the ski slopes
NEGATIVES:
-Room: we got a big family room with a Bunk bed for the kids. The rooms were extremely hot, during the 3 nights we stayed there we turn off the air conditioner and opened the balcony door to cool down the room. It was -30 outside. Even with the door open and the air conditioner off we were in T-shirts inside the room. It was a sauna! In the bunk bed there was a light. When my son turned on the light it was so hot that my son couldn’t sleep. The lamp warmed up the bunk bed. The carpet in the room is extremely dirty. The hotel needs to address these issues immediately. Please take out the carpet!!! The light of the bathroom is linked with the light of the balcony. Every time we would turn on the bathroom light, the light from the balcony would be on! There was no light just for the balcony.
In the evenings we had the problem of terrible smell from adjacent rooms seeping into our family room which offer kitchenette including an electric element for cooking. Besides, we could hear everything from the neighbours rooms.
- Bathroom: it has two toilets which is weird... but ok! The worst is the bath tube. The water pressure is really bad... it takes forever to take a shower which is horrible after a day skiing. Besides, the design of the shower it’s a completely non sense where it floods the entire bathroom. Management must fix this immediately. Besides, there was hair in the bath tube when we arrive. I had to clean myself the bath tube before taking a shower.
- Service: service is terrible. We ordered two extra towels and they told us that they couldn’t bring them to the room. If we wanted we had to go downstairs to pick them up. There’s no English speaking staff at the hotel. There’s just one lady at the reception who speaks mediocre English. We were able to order some food for the room just because our son speaks Chinese. There’s no available English staff to take your orders. If you don’t speak Chinese, forget food in the room.
When you do the check in nobody explains to you the hotel facilities and where are the things located. You have to figure out for yourself.
- Food: food is mediocre all over the 3 restaurants. Breakfast is a nightmare. Dirty tableware, dirty floor, poor quality food. You need to wait for someone to finish their breakfast, ask the staff to clean the table and sit without looking to the floor. Cleaning the tables for them is just to take the dishes, they don't clean with a cloth and detergent. It is like eating in a filthy kitchen.
- The swimming pool is dirty and the water is cold. We put our foot inside the swimming and left immediately. The hot pools were not working when we were there which is a disappointment after a day skiing. I think the hot pools are always close.
- The gym looked good but we didn’t use because it smelled really bad.
- Internet: very slow and wouldn’t work most of the times. We had to use 4G.
- TV: there are only four foreign channels - CNN, BBC, HBO and another one i don't remember now. It would be nice if there was a movie renting system as after 4:30pm, there’s nothing to do and considering that the facilities of the hotel are terrible.
- Children playground; children area is dangerous. We took our 17 months baby there and I (her mother) got hurt in order to “save” her from getting hurt. I saw other kids getting hurt. The stairs were falling down. I called the staff and I explained that it was very dangerous. The staff just decided to put the stairs which had fallen without any repair... I had to explain them that if you touch the stairs again they would fall again... it is when they decided to shut down that part of the playground but didn’t bother to fix it. The playground is also dirty.
- We went to the spa but we found extremely expensive and we didn’t use. For a back massage/60 minutes it was around 500CNY. Not even in the high end spas in Beijing we find such expensive prices.

I cannot imagine a more poorly organized or executed operation! Please, do yourself a favor and avoid this place. In short, this is a mediocre 3-star hotel with 5-star rates. Stay in Chongli town, where you will get what you expect and pay for. If you stay at Genting, you will be sorely disappointed.
First, they have ZERO internet or telephone presence, making it impossible to coordinate with them before you arrive. This was especially difficult for us.
Second, they offer no accommodations for those paying a premium to sleep at the resort that are not offered to the general public skiers. The bar and lounge area are engulfed with skiers and ski gear, leaving no space for you to lounge within the common area. The concierge is busy accommodating skiers that are not staying at the hotel. Why would one pay to stay at the hotel if all of the amenities are open to the public?
Third, the amenities are bogus. The "spa" was not included in the price of the hotel room (a whopping 2000RMB), nor was it a spa. The outdoor hot tubs did not operate, so we were directed to the "hot spring," which was a dirty bath tub in the men's room. After realizing that my wife would have to hang out in the men's room, we promptly left and were charged for the experience. Not even the pool table or the Foosball were included in the room rate (an extra 30RMB per hour). So again, why pay the room rate, when you can simply hang out all day and then sleep in Chongli town for one tenth the rate?
Finally, the room was a 3-star room posing as 5-stars. The shower leaked, flooding the bathroom. The ceiling still had markings and measurements all over it from construction. And, the thermostats didn't have any control over the room, which was 27 degrees Celsius. Also, the hotel has carpet in a country that has never convinced me that it has vacuums. I was worried that the floor would muck up my ski boots.
Take-away... save yourself a headache. If you stay in Chongli town, you won't get much better, but you won't be asking yourself why you paid a premium to be on the mountain. And that, to me, is worth all the difference.
