Lovely hotel with extensive CD music collection and nice breakfast. The rooms are narrow but offer two levels and private courtyards to relax and have tea and coffee. The staff is very friendly and we would come again to enjoy the serene atmosphere.

We went on a 3D2N trip to Cingjing, starting from Hualien, & taking the route via He Huan Shan to reach Cingjing Farm. We were lucky (or not) that it snowed on the day we were travelling, & hence were trapped on He Huan Shan for a good few hours before cars could pass through. We reached our minsu Shangrila Music Villa at 7+pm, instead of the afternoon as arranged.

Music Villa is one of 3 minsus / resorts belonging to the Shangrila group in Chingjing, the 1st being Hanging Gardens, 2nd is Music Villa, and the latest addition is The Old England (built only this year). Music Villa is located quite a far way from the centre of Cingjing, definitely cant walk, and u have to rely on the shuttle service by the resort.

Positive comments 1st. The villa is really nice & pretty. Great for photos. Each room is 2 storeys, & our room had 1 double bed on 1st floor, 1 double & 1 single bed on 2nd floor. 1st floor opened up to a lovely balcony & 2nd floor had a mini balcony also. Food wise we had dinner at Hanging Gardens (no dinner service at Music Villa) - food is really good! Service at Hanging Gardens also is exceptionally good. More on that later.

Negative comments.
1. Rooms are poorly heated. It is now winter, He Huan Shan was snowing on the day we arrived! But there is only heating on the 1st floor! We have a 6 mth old baby, and hence we chose to sleep on 2nd floor where there is more space, but we got really cold at night! Doesnt make sense to have more beds on 2nd floor but no heating! Plus, there wasnt even electric blankets (when most minsus we've been to in Taiwan wld gladly provide that).

2. Service at Music Villa is appalling. The staff at this particular resort are perhaps inexperienced, hence very inflexible & unaccomodating. Travelling with a young child calls for flexibility, and we had to ask them to help arrange transport out to Cingjing Farm at a separate time out of their schedule but it was not easy! We had to banter with them for a long time before they finally agreed to send us out to the tourist centre & then we wld have to take the public bus to the Cingjing Farm ourselves (tourist centre was only 5 mins away by car). I must say though, that the staff at Hanging Gardens were more than helpful whenever we were there for meals, and I think it's really experience that matters.

Overall, for the money we paid for Music Villa, it was not a good experience. On retrospect, we could have paid for much less & gotten a friendly minsu experience. So think twice if u are thinking of going to Music Villa for a comfy friendly minsu experience. If u do want to stay with Shangrila at Cingjing, u may be better off at Hanging Gardens, where the staff are much nicer & more experienced.

We stay here from 16th to 18th Oct. The staff are very helpful, special thanks to Shirley & Tony for their assistance in all the transport arrangements. They made us feel like VIP the moment we check-in.

Shangrila has 3 hotels - namely Hanging Garden, Music Villa & The Old England. You could ask any of the staff from any of these hotels to arrange for transport to the various places of interests or to the other hotels (under Shangrila) if you are their guests & happened to dine or visiting one of their hotels. They hv designated pickup timing but they are always happy to arrange for special pick up (if you have a big group or your timing happen to coincide with a big group). Their transport arrangements really make it very convenient for us, we have the best of both world. The convenience of transport to the places of interests as well as the serenity of the our hotel, which is really peaceful & quiet, away from the crowd.

The room that we had is fantastic, double storey, the upper storey consists of 2 single beds but we only used the double bed on the 1st storey. We asked for a room with a view & indeed we could see mountains & part of a river from our balcony. They even hv a coffee machine (complete with coffee powder) & snacks. As they do not have a kitchen in this hotel, they provide free instant noodle after 11pm. From 9pm-11pm, they provide free drinks (with 2 types of nuts & 3 types of cookies per table) at their lobby. You could choose your drink from the drink menu provided. They would call you at about 8.45pm everyday to remind you that there are free drinks at 9pm. Good Personal Service !!

We went from Taichung to Cingjing by a rented car which charge us NT2000 per car. We had some idea on how to return to Sun Moon Lake which is our next destination but not 100% sure. We were really glad to learn that they could even arrange transport for us to Sun Moon Lake & charge abt NT450 per pax if to XinShe Information centre & abt NT 500-550 per pax if to your designated hotel. These rates is only abt NT100-150 more expensive to the rate charged by some of the tourist buses. From the Free-Go website, I think they are charging NT400-450 per pax. But do note that you have to share the car with some strangers (which is perfectly fine with us).

If we were to visit CingJing, we will definitely stay with them again & may even try out their Old England.

On arrival at Music villa, we left our luggages and went to Old England for high Tea. Being a guest at Music Villa, we were entitled to a discount for the high tea and it turned out to be very reasonable. The scones were delicious and so were all the lovely cakes and sandwiches.

At the Music Villa, there is a friendly staff from Philippines who could speak Mandarin well and a young girl who helped us willingly with our luggages. The dog named Golden is adorable but likes to sleep alot. We had dinner at Shangrila Hanging Garden (at the town centre) as transport was provided.

Breakfast was adequate with free-flow of cereals, prunes, cranberry, yogurt, different types of coffee, tea, porridge in addition to a bowl of salad and three layered wholemeal sandwiches, mushroom and scrambled eggs.

We walked to the town centre ( 30 mins slow walk or 15 mins brisk walk) where there are many walking trails, lavender cottege shop, starbuck, fruit stalls, swiss garden and cafes..

The plus point about staying at the Music Villa is that it gives you a feeling of staying in a traditional English apartment. If we visit Cingjing again, I would choose to stay near the town centre and there are many minsu there.

Originally, my plan was to stay with The Old England which is the most expensive among the 3 hotels operated by the same company. Due to availability, my friends and I eventually chose the Music Villa.

The hotel and its room is great. The room has 2 storeys, with a double bed at ground floor, while 2 single beds upstairs. Also, there is a little garden on the ground floor. On the 1st floor, there is a little balcony (subject to the room you stay) which can accommodate a small table with two chairs. It's relaxing to enjoy the coffee (which you can make it by the coffee beans provided in each room) with your loved one in the little garden or balcony upstairs. But it's too bad it rained heavily most of the time during my stay.

Besides, in each room, it provides the heater and the CD player with amplifier (on the lower floor). You can borrow 3 CDs each time at most. It's perfect to have the light music and a cup of self-made coffee in the room.

The hotel does not provide the dinner nor lunch. But the staff can help to book the tables in another 2 hotels of the same company. There is breakfast provided and you have to choose either Western or Chinese dishes on the night before. All of us chose the Western English-style breakfast and it's yummy.

The hotel locates quite far away from the town center. It's probably takes 30mins for walking to/from the town center. But it's no good to walk at night or wet weather. And it provides the shuttle service to/from another hotel and you can access the town center in 5 mins from there.

If you look for a 'convenient' place, this hotel may not be the best choice. But if you want to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, esp if the weather is good that allows you to sit and drink outdoors, the Music Villa should be a good one for you.

My good friend and I visited Cingjing over the weekend, and stayed in Shangrila Music Villa.

1. The rooms are spacious, new and with a nice terrace. The interior design is an imitation of old-English manors.

2. No dinner is provided in the hotel. We are asked to choose to dine either at the Old England (usually a three-course meal for 1100 NTD) or at the Shangrila Hangling Garden Resort (for a much cheaper price). I understand that most choose to dine at the Old England, which provides excellent food at a very reasonable price in addition to the opportunity to take photos and enjoy the architecture at the Old England.

3. The location is a bit far-off i.e. a 30-minute walk from the nearest bus station. We took a taxi there from Taichung, which costed us NTD 2200. We initially asked the hotel to help us book a taxi from Taichung to the hotel, but the cheapest that they quoted was NTD 2500, which is must more expensive than what is usually quoted by taxi companies in Taichung.

4. Good service. Shirley in particular was very helpful. We were very surprised at the attitude of a younger receptionist though. We came back from dinner one night where the hotel had NO ELECTRICITY. We stepped into the lobby and everything was pitch black. Naturally, we asked the receptionist in charge (a younger lady) what was going on. She replied that due to the rain, there was a power failure. We then asked her whether someone was doing any repairs, and for how long we would have to stay huddled up in the cold reception area. The receptionist immediately became very defensive and told us that it wasn't her fault, and that it was the "Government's fault" and the "Government is repairing the electricity right now" and there is nothing they could do about it. We were rather taken aback by her defensive attitude - of course we weren't blaming her or the hotel for the power failure. We simply wanted a reassurance that someone was fixing the problem, that it would be fixed within an estimated period of time, and that the hotel apologies for any inconvenience caused to its guests. We got nothing of this sort, and were left to huddle at the reception/common area that was cold due to the rain and only dimly lit by candles.

Apart from this hiccup, the service was quite satisfying. All of the staff (apart from the young receptionist thankfully there only at night, it seems) were very helpful, helped us arrange transportation, called us to arrange for drinks to be sent to our rooms at night, etc.

The hotel is nice and all rooms are 2 storey with nice little balcony, it is really cozy to spend an afternoon sitting there and have some coffee and tea. The location is a bit far from the tourist centre but the hotel does provide offer shuttle bus.

Hotel staff are really helpful and friendly and are very responsive to our query. They offer afternoon tea and drink session at night too.

It is probably the best boutique hotel we've ever stayed in (we haven't been to many). Might be a bit pricey but it's definitely worth it. There are many similar places around of this kind but we are satisfied with our stay. The location is a bit far from the attractions (15min walk up the hill) and they don't serve lunch and dinner. But they provide shuttle van to and from the dinner place and the attractions, so it is okay. The staff there are very helpful in everything. They do serve afternoon tea and one cup of evening wine. We had 2 people but were offered 2 floors in a room. The toilets in the room is not so modern but still acceptable. Overall it's a pleasant stay.

For mature couple, It is, no doubt a place you can easily reignite the feeling of love and togetherness. It is a place where city-folk may find peace and true relaxation, away from the usual busy and forever rushing pace of life in the city. Transport could pose a major challenge. You may have breakfast at the hotel, dinner at its sister hotel nearby: Hanging Garden (i must say the food there is fantastic, the ambiance was even great). So what about lunch? Oh, this you got to figure it out yourself and make your own arrangement. The kitchen here is not cook-worthy and that's explain why the hotel does not cater for meal. Rich library of music CDs and reading materials (chinese novels if you like). The outdoor air quality surely is excellent, but the hotel could improve on maintenance (leaky toilet) and cleanliness (settled dust on flat surfaces).
