Good location. Room was very spacious. The staff speaks very little English but they try their best to be accommodating. Good WiFi. Nice bathroom. Very good breakfast buffet on the top floor. It’s on the far side of the lake but it’s a cute area with lots of restaurants and food vendors.

It’s scenic and great hospitality ! Great family bonding with the cooling weather 12-20 degrees then in Spring. One night is enough but we had stayed two nights.

We had taken cab up the mountain and it’s almost 3000 NT . Coming back, we use the ferry and tour bus that is more cost effective and in fact better for sight seeing along the way.

We had some tea appreciation and bought teas back. Also look out for the rice wines and vinegars are good buys !

We had a great stay at Cherng Yuan Hotel. It is located at Ito Thao pier, the 2nd largest pier at Sun Moon Lake after Shui She pier which is the main pier and the location of Starbucks coffee shop.

Once we stepped out from Ita Thao pier, the hotel is spotted. The location is great. It is near to the pier as well as the bus station that you can take the "Around the lake" bus which take you to attraction spots around the lake.

I need to point out that the bus is running til 5.30pm only. Anyway, the shops around the lake would close early at 7-8pm and it will be pretty dark at night so you shouldn't move around. At least, the FamilyMart (the 24/7 convenient store) is open all the time and near the hotel.

The room is large, clean and comfortable. We can look over the lake from the loft on 7th floor where the hotel serve breakfast. It is really relaxing on 7th floor. We also have a small glimpse of the lake from our room on 5th floor.

The staffs are all very friendly and have a very good manner. We would love to stay at Cherng Yuan again

We stayed for 2 nights at Cherng Yuan Hotel and have to say: quality for money.
Location of the village: There are basically two main villages at Sun-Moon Lake. The one village (I think it’s called Shui She Ma Tou) is where the buses and taxis arrive; this hotel is located in the village Ita Shao, on the other side of the lake. Ita Shao is much more atmospheric (plus, here you can actually come into much closer contact with members from aboriginal tribes who run their shops and restaurants there). Careful: the boats that cross the lake stop running somewhere between 17:00-18:00. If you arrive later, I guess you can catch bus, but that will drop you off somewhere at the road running around the lake - but then you will have to walk about 10-15 minutes (or a taxi, I assume). Our boat ride lasted about 20 minutes as we drove toward the hotel (it stopped at other places) and 10 on the return (direct).Ita Shao is also an excellent base if you want to visit the Butterfly Park or take the Cable car to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village and the theme park (tip: buy the ticket to both together – it’s much cheaper) as both are located there. Nightlife: practically zero – around 22:00, the village went almost dark.
Location of the hotel: Excellent. It’s about a 1-minute walk from the pier, in a side-street. If you’re lucky, your room might have a lake-view; otherwise, you’ll be able to enjoy the lake view from the breakfast room (there is also a veranda). Since Ita Shao is really tiny, you’re never more than a few minutes away from the hotel.
Rooms: Huge, clean, comfortable. Windows open slightly. Complimentary tea/coffee; complimentary slippers. If I remember correctly, there was no safe. Bathroom: clean (toiletries: shower gel & shampoo from dispenser). Wifi connection (complimentary) good. No noise in the morning (even though there was a hotel right next to ours).
Breakfast: The breakfast room is wonderful, with the lake view. The breakfast itself was ok but not overwhelming: no egg station; scrambled eggs were a bit too runny; no cheese or butter; one toaster only, so you might need to wait some time for your turn.
Check-in/out: smooth and fast
Staff: Professional, accommodating and polite
Overall: excellent value for money!

The service was excellent! We love our rooms. It was spacious, clean and neat. The toilet was spacious too. I like the fact that I just need to collect hot water outside my room. It saved me the trouble to boil hot water. My siblings love that there was heater in the room as they were afraid of cold. The hotel owner was always lovingly serving us tea to 12 of my family members. The hotel location was excellent. It was just in front of the pier and we were able to have the first hand news to know that the pier was open during the unpredictable weather. The Ita shao pier was excellent as it has all kinds of eateries and yet it was not over crowded. The restaurant just right beside the hotel serving beef noodles was quite good. The fried rice was nice too. I went to the main pier which was Shui She Ma Tou (水社),it was over crowded and never ends of loads and loads of tourist that came with coaches. I was so glad that I did not choose to stay there. The best thing to do was to spend half a day riding bicycle around the Sun Moon Lake. The design of the bicycle path was excellent. If you would like to enjoy the ride effortlessly, it would be good to ride on a motor engine bicycle. If you are riding with your young kids, it would be a must option to take the electric bicycle.
Lastly, my hubby left his mobile at the hotel. The owner helpfully dispatch it to us to our Taipei hotel. We have an enjoyable stay at Sun Moon Lake.

For me, this hotel has it all, convenient location; terrific lagoon view; wifi, big room with jaccuzzi bathtub, all at a much more reasonable price than all big hotels in the area. Have to qualify that I had booked the family room which comes with a bigger room and the jacuzzi bathtub. I added an extra bed as there were 5 of us but even then, the room was
still quite spacious.

Hotel owner was also very helpful to offer suggestions on places we could visit, street food and restaurant as we did not do any homework. They had suggested that we should try the various street food for lunch as these will be closed in the night which we did and will recommend this for you to do the same. For dinner, we tried 富園餐館as recommended (its only round the corner,1min walk away) and the food was very good!!

Took the boat ride and did not enjoy it. However, if you like to check out some of the places of interest accessible from the pier then this will be an option as other options will be cycling or taking the internal bus that arrives at 1hr frequency. The boat ride cost NT100 if you buy from the hotel or from the ladies at the pier. Quite a number of other places of interest are only accessible by car/bus. Personally if I were to do this over again, will just spend all my time in the comfort of my room to enjoy the lake view without jostling with the crowd.

This hotel is at the Ita Shao pier in sun moon lake and not the main Shui-She pier. We booked a minivan for the trip from Alishan to sun moon lake so getting to Cherng Yuan was relatively fuss-free. We stayed in two family rooms on level 5 and 6 of the hotel and got an unobstructed view of the lake.The moment we stepped into the room, we were wowed by the view of the lake. We also saw firework display during the night. The room was huge and there were many channels on the TV which is truly essential since the village shuts down at 8pm everynight. Miss Cherng - owner of the hotel was truly hospitable and she was able to provide us with many recommendations on where to eat, timing of the river-taxis, and the sights to visit. The hotel is just by the pier, and about 10-15 minutes walk away from the cable car station. You can purchase discounted cable car and river taxi tickets from the hotel. The room also came with a jacuzzi which was a nice touch. Although the breakfast was a small spread of congee and condiments, and bread, the hotel is situated in the middle of a street food paradise so make use of the opportunity to walk around and try the food. There is a mochi stall that is fantastic and its just to the left of the hotel. Also try the chinese bun sandwich, braised tofu-sandwich, cabbage spring roll, chicken wing stuffed with rice, and milk tea. A very good recommendation from the hotel was the Fu Yuan restuarant - one of the best chinese food we tasted during our 9-day trip around taiwan. While i recommend the cable car ride, the cultural village was nothing to shout about and was a very artificial set-up. However, I have to take one-point off because our transfer to the Taichung HSR was half an hour late and as a result, the driver drove at 140 km/h which was an experience we do not wish to repeat.

Hotel very near pier so easier to reach via boat then bus. That said, It is a 3 min walk from bus stop.

Interior, while decorated in quite traditional study room style, is a bit too dark and uninviting for my liking.
I booked a lake view room. It was a little run down.

Counter staff not friendly at all. I didn't feel welcomed, unlike the other 3 hotels I stayed in Taiwan for much less. The only saving grace was breakfast - breakfast room has nice view with helpful smiling staff.

Try another hotel...

Overall a convenient location within walking distance to the gondola and Itathao pier. close to the lake but a little too pricey for the accommodation. Room (double beds facing the lake) was large but dated. Staff was not as helpful - just there to check you in and out.

Pros:
- Close to the Sun Moon Lake Gondola;
- Nice view of the lake if choose lakeview rooms;
- Spacious room and bathroom (bath tub and shower stall).

Cons:
- Hotel does not have a restaurant onsite; and most restaurants in Ithatao area close very early. A convenient store is located one block away.
-Breakfast was basic;
-Room could use refreshing; throwing toilet paper into the toilet was not allowed;
- In room fridge and tea kettle did not work.

The staff were very friendly and willing to give good recommendations about where to go and eat. The room was spacious with a spectacular view of the Sun Moon Lake. Breakfast selection was limited but adequate. You also had the lakeview in the breakfast room. Good to start your day!
