Melissa and her team looked after us really well with personal service.
The room (#208) was large with a balcony overlooking the lake.
The bathroom was great with a lovely hot shower. Beds and linen were all nice.
Breakfast was hearty (I don't think they do dinner as an option).
To get the good views, it is on a hill, so if you're walking, it's either a windy road or some steps to get up there.
Walking along the lake to Shuishe takes about 20 mins (all flat).
You can also get push-bikes to use from the hotel for free.

We did not want to pay a bomb for a quad room and the Sun Moon Lake Bamboo Rock Garden meet our budget and had the quad room that I was looking for, to house 2 adults and 2 children.
The room was huge and offered a good view of the lake. Unlike some other hotels that we had stayed in Taiwan, this hotel felt well maintained and clean.
On top of that, the hotel arranged for a free firefly viewing excursion in the night. The kids loved it and the fireflies were beautiful! There were so many of them. Amazing!

Sun Moon lake is definitely a highlight in Taiwan and should not be missed! having booked 2 nights at Sun Moon Lake Bamboo Rock Garden was definitely a great decision!
It's a magic place surrounded by a bamboo forrest (yet very close to the main road which you can't see but hear). the staff is very polite! especially their manager (her given english name is Rita) is a jewel!!! the rooms are relatively big compared to asian hotel rooms, all have balconies facing the lake and the rooms are impeccably clean.
only the second and 3rd floor have hotel rooms, the lake view from the second floor is a bit better due to tree crowns who block the view in the 3rd floor. never the less they have a few so called VIP Suites where you have full sea view from the bath tub!
if you want to book with breakfast it's worth it. it's an oriental-western style buffet and the views onto the lake from their shaded breakfast deck are gorgeous! they also have a beautiful terrace with great views onto the lake and seats/tables shaded with big umbrellas. if I understood right the outside bar closes at 17:00. unfortunately most of the flyers regarding activity offers are in chinese, so I could not get the whole program they offer but it is also a venue for conferences. it's definitly a great place for families with kids! they offer free bicycles which are in front of the hotel, you just grab your bike and you will reach the bike pathway directly at the lake within 3 minutes! the main bus station is at the Shueishe Visitor Center which is 1.6 km away. I got a free lift to the hotel (asked the staff at the visitor center to call the hotel) and later back to the bus station! cycling the lake or crossing it with the boat are the main activities apart from hiking in that beautiful nature, visiting temples and the surrounding villages who offer some activities like pottery making or experiencing how tea is being processed from the plant to the cup...
there are plenty of different bus tours offered at the Shueshe Visitor Center!

the whole lake place is not cheap regarding all accommodations and Bamboo Rock Garden is still one of the cheaper places at the lake according to some Taiwanese I met! but it is definitely worth a visit for a couple of days. I only booked 2 nights which was not enough!
extra tip: if possible travel in november which is out of season and avoid weekends where it can get incredibly congested on the roads (with tour busses) and around the lake with vast amounts of tour groups!
all in all I would always book again Sun Moon Lake Bamboo Rock Garden! I personally was 100% satisfied!!!!

I was only here for one night. My stay was pleasant enough. Though I have to say my room looked nothing like the rooms advertised. I did have a room with a view and the view was lovely.
But the hotel had a very old school feel. It looked like a hotel you would find on the Costa Del Sol in the 80s. There's no real warmth to the hotels interior and I could almost be in an office building.
The room as very much the same, but then having said that it was blooming big with two large double beds.
The room was clean enough.
The location of the hotel is decent enough and you're meters away from the lake.
The hotel have bikes you can take out, which I recommend as the best way to see the lake. But take my word for it, going round the whole of the lake will take you a few hours.
The staff were so friendly and helpful, they were properly wonderful.
Breakfast was ok, I get the feeling that they usually offer a buffet. But due to the fact that there only appeared to be me and one other couple. We all appeared to be given a tray containing eggs, fish, vegetables and fruit. Which turned out to be plenty.
I would recommend this place. But don't expect your room to look anything like the photos.

The Bamboo Rock Garden is a perfect match when visiting Sun Moon Lake if your purpose is to enjoy nature, serenity and local life of this national park. The reception staffs are welcoming and informative. They provided suggestions on hiking trails, photo spots and transportation details to Tai Chung. They even arranged a car to take me to the bus station at the Marina (水社).
The room is stylish, spacious and offers a great view of the lake. The most enjoyable moments of my stay were 1) the super large tub which feels like you are bathing in a hot spring pool in the wood and overlooking the lake through the corner viewed windows; 2) the morning breakfast on the overhanging patio among the bamboo and looking out to the mountains and the lake is heavenly. Did I mention the free bikes?
I'll come back in May to watch the fireflies.

Stayed here for one night only and wished we booked one extra night as there were many things to do for the kids. However, even though we came in winter (end December), there were still huge mosquitoes flying around so be prepared to cover yourself with insect spray!

Rooms were very big size and decent and modern, clean. Breakfast had good variety with usual Taiwanese porridge and usual condiments. I would stay here again.

A very relaxing place to stay with a view of the lake. The staff are very helpful with all your questions, they offer free pick up and drop off at the Shuishe Visitors Center where you can ride the bus going to and from Taichung. The room is big compared to other hotels around Asia and breakfast is good.

Very nice hotel, we had a spacious room thanks to the fact that we upgraded it ourself in the hotel for a nice price.

View on the lake is beautiful. The hotel is quite clean, but we had to ask for house keeping.

Breakfast is okay, the view absolutely amazing from the sitting area.

Free parking is great! Free bikes are okay, the quality is not that good of the bikes.

I can definitely recommend this place.

This hotel was quite remoted! However it was quiet and the air was absolutely fresh!

The room was spacious & clean! Although we were 2 persons but a 4 persons room was provided! Actually our group is 15 people in 4 family! The only 2 VIP rooms were occupied to us, which is so large with a living room & sleeping room! Also there was a jacuzzi in the bathing room! Wow... so fantastic here!

There was a balcony in each room and we can have a very good view of Sun Moon Lake!

Travel on Taiwan's high speed train from Taipei Main station to Taichung, or a closer station if on a 'stopping all stations' train. Then change to the suburban electric train that runs regularly to Ershui, where about every hour and 40 minutes there is a delightful branch line railcar to Che-Cheng. From there, a Toytota Coaster shuttle bus runs every couple of hours to Sun Moon Lake. Che-cheng is a delightful village, full of historical displays about the timber and coal mining industries. I did this journey in August 2017: it was great.

from Taichung you have to take a bus from Nantou Bus company which brings you to Shueishe Visitor Center (which is the final stop). if you have a booking for Bamboo Rock Garden (recommended!!!) you can ask inside the visitor center to call them and to pick you up (it's only 1.6 km away), otherwise take a taxi! Taichung: Nantou Bus Company is located at Shuangshih Road (Taichung Park direction) about 1 km away from Taichung Main Station, you can actually walk. if you come from the Main Station it will be on the left side of Shuangshih Road. It's not so easy to find since there are a couple of bus companies located in that street and their location is a small (garage size) place. But people are helpful and you can ask for location and direction. It took me around 20 minutes to walk from the main station and buses go quite frequently. it's a 1.5 h trip and if you buy a return ticket to Taichung it's gonna cost you 340 NT$. if the lodge can arrange a car to Nantou is out of my knowledge but they are very helpful and give you a lot of tips. Shueishe Visitor Center offers a lot of different busses and tours to all possible directions and taxi is always an option. hope this helps enjoy the beautiful lodge and the lake!!!
