Alishan National Scenic Area is the perfect Taiwan tourist destination for a touch of nature. A number of scenic trails and hiking routes are established by its localized climate and landscape offering unique range of lush plant-life and fascinating sceneries that are always wonderful to explore. Gon-A-Kam Trail, Fenruei Trail, Fentai Trail and the famous Mt. Da Tong Trail are in Fenchihu area, where guests may simply visit while accommodating at Fenchihu Hotel. Also, the renowned sunrise views at Mt. Da Tong Peak which set 1,976 metres above sea level provides an excellent spot for sunrise and sea of clouds sceneries, and about 330 degrees panoramic views overlooking nearby tribes and forests. What is more special about the sunrise sceneries at Mt. Da Tong Peak that is the dawn here lasts longer than Alishan and sometimes even up to 3 minutes and 20 seconds! Other fascinating Fenchihu attractions include Bright Moon Cave (Min Yue Ku), Meteor Cave (Liushinyen) and The Eighteen Arhats Cave can be seen along the hiking trails for a marvelous Fenchihu travel.

Detailed Reviews
This is one of the best hotel in Fenqhihu heritage village. It is steps from the train station and very famous for the train box lunch which was one if the unique lunch box in Taiwan. Almost all travelers visit this hotel to taste the lunch boxes, and if you are a staying guests then you will get discount for the meals. Mostly traveler stay in this hotel to make a trip to Alishan National Park, rather than staying inside the park,it is an option to stay at this small village. They are several types of room, and the cheapest room is the Japanese tatami room. The wooden bathtub is a bonus with herbal soaking bag provided in the room. The hot water is not running for 24 hours, and there is no heater inside the room, so be prepared the cold weather in the high land. Hotel doesn’t provide breakfast, but they give coupons worth 200 New Taiwan Dollar per pax per room per night to buy breakfast at 7/11 mart just outside the hotel. Room also have tea and hot jug but no coffee. Outside the hotel there are many eating places, but make sure to have early dinner as this is a sleepy village and almost all shops close at 7 PM except 7/11 mart. At night there is nothing to do as the village is very calm and almost all guests sleep early to prepare a long day at Alishan National Park. This hotel in certain season also provide a walking tour to see firefly, very comprehensive and free for all staying guests. For those who opt not to stay inside Alishan National Park, then this heritage hotel is an option. One more thing to add, the bus station is also three minutes walk from the hotel. The bus station serve Alishan NP and Chiayi Station and HSR.

As a group of friends that travelled around Taiwan, we planned to visit the Alishan National Scenic Park and most notably the famous forest train track connecting Chiayi to Alishan that was built by the Japanese back in the days.
The fare via train is around 250NT$/pers and there's only one train per day from
Mon-Fri between Chiayi and Fenchihu (9:00am Chiayi - 9:10am Beimen all the way to Fenchihu 11:20am) (during weekends, train depart 10am in Chiayi, I'm not sure if it's an extra one or if the 9am one is replaced by that one)
It is likely possible to book tickets on internet but we didn't managed to cause we couldn't find the english version of the website. We managed to buy the last seat ticket on the very same day and since there was only 1 ticket for 4, we decided to take turns for the seat :)
It is possible to get on the train even if all the tickets are sold out as long as you can bear standing for more than 2 hrs and do not mind the bumps.
At the time I'm writing this, the forest reack between Fenchihu and Alishan is closed and so we naturally decided to stay in this hotel.
Excellent location, 5-mins walk close to both the Fenchihu railroad station as well as the Fenchihu bus station. This hotel is ideally situated geographically between the city and the mountains. Under constant hot and humid weather since we began travelling through Taiwan, we welcomed that haven and decided to stay an extra day before hitting the city again.
Swarming with every kind of shops during the afternoon, Fenchihu turns back into a quiet and quaint village in the evening which is even better if you try to avoid massive tourism and tour circuits.
Except a 7/11 that closes indeed at 11pm (rare for TW!) , there isn't any disco, bars or any nightlife fortunately.
However, the hotel offers a fun-and-family free guided tour : come night, you can take part in a tour and go admire fireflies, which are numerous in this region and at this altitude. Very cool :)
Another tour is also organised for free during the afternoon (starts 3pm, lasts ~90mins) and will take you among others stuff, through a train museum where you'll be able to see old models that were used back in the days on the Forest Railroad and inside a really impressive bamboo forest close to the hotel. A really nice and easy walk.
There's also a 3rd walk during the early hours but we haven't gotten the chance to experience it.
The hotel also acts as a restaurant and serve the famous Fenchihu bento (pork/chicken though you can ask a vegetarian one too) for 100/120 NT$, soup included. A laundry service is available for 20NT$. (+20NT$ for drying)
Also,
If you wish to watch the Alishan sunrise and/or go hike really early, it's possible.
The really kind personal (special thanks to Jill and to the other girl at the counter, I regret not asking for her name) can plan that for you, np at all.
Single way : 1500NT$ for 4, back and forth : 2500NT$ for 4.
The driver Mr.Lin and the other driver will wait for you the whole day at the parking, no hurry at all in order to be readily available as soon as you decide to exit the Alishan park ! Wow !!
We left the hotel at 3am and ended up hiking inside the park to go down only at noon.
Considering the mountain driving part took almost 1hr, that the driver gets to you at 3am and waits for you, and that the cars are huge and comfortable this is more than a reasonable price.
Finally, some words on the quadruple room.
Very spacious, we get to sleep on comfy tatamis. Extra towels and blankets are available in the closet. Huge flat screen, a/c , japanese style bathroom and room.
Alishan Tea box is given as a welcome gift and bags of aromatic herbs are provided for the bath.
Good amount of mural plugs but not universal ones.
What else to say ? That was a really unexpected nature retreat away from the fast and furious noise and speedy life of the city.
We liked a lot and can only recommand.
Thanks for all :)

First of all, Fenchihu is a nice place to visit but may not warrant a night stay in the town.....of course depending on what you are looking for.
Perhaps the only "commercial" hotel in the area, the hotel is located right in the town just minutes away from the traditional street. Fenchihu is famous for its bento set which makes Taiwan Rail popular as many simply packed a bento set for the train ride. The hotel was said to be the originator of the bento set and is currently operated by the 3rd generation. Check in was simple as they will brief you on the 3 complimentary tours they offered and also the free bento set.
Room wise is something I hope I didn't get to sleep in as it is tatami style with thin mattress place on the ground....ended up didn't sleep well. The room is in need of renovation but this is perhaps what made this hotel unique. A wooden bath tub can be found in the bath room which gives it the retro feel. Hot water is only available for several hours per day.
Honestly I wouldn't even recommend a stay on this hotel unless you like to retro feel and being away from the city.
The place itself is worth a day trip as it has greeneries and snacks to offer in the town and the famous old railway track. Also worth mentioning is that there is a nice home cooked restaurant located opposite the man drop off area known as "Tian Ma Ma" which offers good cheap food at NTD 250 per head. You do not get to choose what you want to eat but whatever the chef prepares. Had a decent meal there in the evening.
Also in the traditional street, you get to sample all the snacks that made Taiwan famous.
Again, only stay here if you want a feel of being in a small town!!

The hotel is quite nice from the outside. There is a SevenEleven on the upper floor. Reception was friendly.
I didn't like the Japanese-style room at all. The furnishings were very old. Tatami mats and futon bed and a small, low table. The bathroom had a narrow Japanese wooden tub that flooded the bathroom when emptied (no separate drain).
For breakfast, each person received a 100 NT$ voucher for the SevenEleven.
Not a hotel I would want to stay in again.

Stayed there for 2 nights. First night was uneventful. Second night the place had many Chinese tourists. Guess 'she' had no empty room so decided to bunk in with us.
Sister dreamt of 'her' not allowing her to use the toilet. The mum dreamt of 'her' forcing her to drink from the toilet bowl. I saw 'her' in between the beds.
In addition, there was a funny smell that filled the hotel.
I must admit that the staff n the owner were very friendly and breakfast was ok. But stay at your risk.

We did not stay at this hotel but we got vouchers for the bento there via a driver. We were looking around as it was close to lunch period and it was right at the entrance of the town. We walked in and wanted to walk out almost immediately. The place smells off-putting and their service is horrible. Asked the counter staff for help but was serviced by a lady who was impatient and had a "do not waste my time by asking too much questions". Eventually, we walked out and went to another bento stall nearer to the train station which served very good bento. As a rule of thumb, a place that has to give vouchers to drive business is one I believe you do not have to try. The good ones are usually those that you get for what u pay (or wait) for.

Generally, Fenchihu is a lovely place to visit but with the Forest Railway to Alishan halted due to the landslide a few years ago, it's still a hassle to take the 2hour plus ride to the hotel. We reached the hotel around 5plus after taking one of the only 2 public bus rides from Chiayi Railway station. One is at 7 plus am and the other at 3.10pm. Alight at the last stop and the locals will happily point to the direction of the hotel. The hotel is located below the 7-11. For the price we're quite disappointed with the state of the hotel. Things look relatively old, especially our room. Upon check-in we were given each a herbal pack for warm baths to be enjoyed and the 20% discount voucher to the specialty shop at the old street. The air in Fenchihu is extremely refreshing. I'll suggest visitors to take a short walk around the forest trail in the morning. The old street is also quite interesting but relatively smaller compared to Jiufen and Shifen in Taipei. The night firefly tour provided by the hotel was sadly canceled due to the rain that night. We've spent a relaxing a relatively quiet night in the room watching television. The wifi connection on our floor had some problems and the staff had to restart the system for us, which after a few hours was disrupted again. Our room was a little stuffy too. The next morning, we were greeted by a group of China tourists in the breakfast area. After the first few minutes of attempting to queue up for our food(we seem to always be last in the queue from all the shoving), we decided to take another walk outside. After returning we were greeted by the remains of the war despite signs around the area that guests should clear their own plate. Luckily, the staff did quite a good job of cleaning up everything quickly. Breakfast was simple. Not the best we've had in Taiwan but one of the better ones.
Tip: If you visit on a weekend, there's a bus up to Alishan

Fenchihu is a great place to stay for a couple of days to soak up the mountains and enjoy a slower pace to other cities in Taiwan. The hotel is fine for this purpose but don't expect a huge amount. Our Japanese style room was fine but wasn't made up in three days. The 7-eleven above the hotel is very useful for getting beers during the ad breaks in movies (there isn't much to do here at night). The breakfast is Chinese style and quite good. The staff are helpful but don't speak much English.

I recommended this place as it should be the best accommodation in Fenchihu. It is located right in the town center.
Fenchihu is a very small from the way down from Alishan. Fenchihu was once the biggest train stop station for Alishan train last time. Since the train operation has been suspended, Fenchihu has become a historical site. However the town ppl is still trying to maintain it's culture. If you are here, you must try the famous bento lunch box. It is just twd10 and you can eat something very special.
I stayed here for only one night but have eaten 4 bento lunch box!! Fenchihu hotel owner also provide free tour around this town explaining the historical site and attraction spot. At night, the town is so silent but in the morning there is one row of shop operating like back in the old days.
This place is Something special that you should stop by.

Good hotel but no activities really. Only stay one night. The hiking looks cool but the leeches don't. Price was good. The service was fine. Not much of a mountain view but did have old style charm and the barrel tub was awesome.
