Late posting, my stay was during December 2018. I booked this hotel thru Agoda, not very many options as it was the year end holidays and close to New Year’s Eve celebration in Taipei which is the city’s busiest season. Taxi can pull up directly at the hotel entrance on ground level. Bell staff are available if one needs help. Large sitting area in the lobby, and I saw guests sat while waiting for rooms during the afternoon. Room size was not very large, but it was adequate for one person. Sleep quality was also fine and the mattress was very comfortable. The overall cleanliness of the room was good too. From the hotel, you could walk to the popular shopping area of Xinyi in about 20 minutes, not exactly very close but not too fair either. Perhaps need to hail a taxi if one does buy a lot of stuff from the malls there. Best shopping option would be the Mitsukoshi stores and they have a few blocks, might take days to walk around them. I still prefer other better connected budget or three star hotels in Taipei, and United looses out on its location.

My wife and I wanted to watch the fireworks from a hotel in taipei but we didn't book anything until 2 weeks prior. By then, most hotels were either sold out or super expensive. We decided we would just book a hotel, watch the fireworks near sun-yat sen and then stay at the hotel for the night to avoid the crowds going back. I had booked a deluxe room, as it was the only and last room available 2 weeks before new year's eve. I tried calling them to see if there would be a view of taipei 101 from the room, but they told me the room I booked didn't have a view. Nonetheless I still proceeded with the booking. Upon check-in, I realized I was given the highest floor and the room with the closest view of Taipei 101. Room 1803 (ask for this!). I couldn't ask for more, it had an amazing view of the fireworks without getting stuck in the crowds. The room was clean, but clearly dated as many other reviews have said. It is right outside sun-yat sen mrt, so it's super convenient as well.

United Hotel is stiutated in perhaps one of the most-happening spot in Taipei's glamours Xinyi district. While the location is more than perfect, the hotel itself is outdated, with poor infrastructure and technologies. The lobby is atrocious, with a smell that reminds of you fish market. The hotel's own reservation system and guest-services system are still paper-based (can you imaging that? It's real!). Despite all these shortcomings, the hotel staff is great, with great services, its immediate response and follow-through somehow compesnated the outdatedness of the hotel.

Came to Taipei on a last minute trip with family of 6, made reservation for 2 rooms - superior suite and deluxe twin. Price is economical for this prime location in Taipei. Perfectly accessible to all major attractions in Xinyi district. 1 minute walk to MRT station, 3 minute to the Sun Yat San memorial park, 10 min walk to department stores, 15 min to Taipei 101. There are restaurants and shops all around, with a 7-11 across the street, and massage place too, Starbucks in the corner, everything you need or ever want to visit is accessible from here. Breakfast is ordinary with small spread of variety. Staff are polite and above average. However with every question I raise, they almost need to check with someone and revert later. I guess management is very centralized and not so flexible. Small lobby and check-in desk, often filled with people. This being an old and dated hotel, it’s hard to ignore the moldy and damp smell upon entering. This is also present in the room. Room is spacious and clean. Furnitures are old though. A little strange they put a queen sized bed in the superior suite. It’s a huge room with minimal furniture and a small queen sized bed. The layout of the room is poorly designed. Deluxe twin on the other hand is ok. Water pressure for the toilet is way low, you need to keep flushing for at least 5 seconds for the water to go down. Shower pressure is good. TV is old, my fish so old for today’s hotel. It’s a 32 inch maybe, at least it feels like it. Resolution and sound quality are both bad. Parking is behind the property and is often occupied fully, totally difficult park. We have a 7-seater, it’s almost impossible to fit into one of the spaces. So we opted for private paid parking offsite. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Location is unbeatable, just don’t expect to live like a king. For more comfortable living with ample parking and less crowds, I highly recommend Eslite hotel where service and hotel quality are both excellent.

Pros - Good location - Convenient - Plentiful of food around, convenient stores & 1 supermarket - Water pressure is good - Carpet looks clean - Housekeeping aunty is consistent except for last 2 days of my 7 nights stay - WiFi is strong and stable - Hotel has own car park facilities Cons - Dated and lobby has a musky smell - Room has faint smell of renovation - Weird shape & furnishings, not user friendly - Suite is misleading, just a slightly bigger double room rather than a proper suite - No towel rack, only one clothes hook in bathroom - Face main road and construction of Big Arena - Blackout curtains is too short, light penetrate through the sides early in morning. - Odd placement and lack of power points, only available in local plug type, no international plug type. - Bring your own power extension block - Small basin - Initially hot water took some time to come on - Midway of my stay, hotel has no hot water till my room mate fell ill bathing in cold water - Aircon is extremely cold even when turned off, the cold air continue to flow into the room. - Can smell cigarette smell along corridor - Poker face Friendliness - Toilet seat is not heated unlike other similar rated hotel in Taipei - The room safe is not secured to the wall, the entire safe can be carried away easily. This review's star rating is for the hotel's location and staff effort, else I'm inclined to a 1 star rating instead. Clearly this hotel cannot handle high occupancy , the hot water supply was not available for 3 of my 7 nights stay where the hotel is 100% booked. Hotel management claims that it just broke down, reading the previous guests' reviews, the water heater seems to "break down" not too long ago too. The front desk did not bother to inform guest of the water heater breakdown upon check-in, I had verify this with a friend who check-in during the disruption period. Personally I found this practice to be very disturbing of the hotel to continue accepting the reservation when clearly it cannot even provide the most basic function. Night shift duty manager Eric has to boil a huge pot of hot water for the shower in the interim while the hotel "rush to repair" the heater for many days. The hot water supply resume after the weekend when occupancy drops. Hotel Assistant General Manager - Calvin , was cheeky in trying to brush off the lack hot water as non issue. I had to remind him that the hot water issue was a recurrence documented by previous guests' review. This hotel's 4 star rating is an overhype by international standards, maintaining a 3 star rating would be challenging to begin with. It's a pity that this property is in such a low functionality and service level, the property is in need of a major refurbishment to bring back the glamorous past. Lastly, in processing the refund to my credit card, the finance department actually emailed another guest's charge slip to me instead. I wrote back requesting to make good (with a copy of the email to the Assistant General Manager), the hotel till date has not replied.
