What an remarkable experience i had at Rocky Roads together with my fellow students and two lectures. When we got there the owner of the place was there too greet us first, what a well mannered and respectful person, he had his broad smile and shared a few jokes wit us showed us around and also made sure all our needs... We thoroughly enjoyed have your group with us. We knew that you were here to learn about the fine art of hospitality, and so we just did what we always do......! Seriously, the energy and keenness of your group, and your openness to your learning process was humbling. We fondly remember your group quietly working away in the evening by... More

Yes, absolutely no need to be cold in winter camping with us. Just make sure your electric blankets are turned on so that you can snuggle into a warm bed after enjoying the bracing night air and the stars when you leave our fireside space in the main house.... The winter days are probably the best days here - cool... More

Our man Rocky has many fans, and deservedly so. He's probably the best host I've encountered, not because he tries to be....rather because he DOESN'T try to be, he just IS - if that makes sense! That's so refreshing in these days of plastic smiles and folk trying too hard to be nice.... (Yes, Rocky, you are allowed to blush...)... More

Rocky Road is a so called glamping, which simply means a luxurious camping and the place fully delivers on the name. The tents are high quality, with comfy beds and electric blankets to keep you warm during chilly nights. The toilet/bathroom facilities are high quality and clean. The biggest trait of this place is actually the owner, Rocky, and his... More

Yes, camping does NOT need to be "roughing it". Thanks for your great review, and I've passed on your appreciation of our greatest asset - Rocky - to him. We're so glad you felt the way we appreciate all our guests - that's what makes it fun for us! Leon More

Ours was a last minute booking as, due to flooding, our accommodation in the Keurboom National Park was cancelled just 12 hours before we were due to go. Fortunately there were tents available at Rocky's. We hadn't stayed at a backpackers in years but we decided to give it a go with our two teenage boys. We had a great... More

We've noted your comment about the hot water - always problematic with gas and uncertain water pressure in rural areas. So pleased your boys were "turned on" to petanque......such fun to while away languid evenings. Glad your stopgap visit to us was a pleasant surprise! Leon More

I always book my holidays at the last minute and was struggling to find accommodation. Local Attractions recommended I try Rocky. The owner is called Rocky and he is an awesome guy. I emailed him and got a reply that evening telling me not to worry. I arrived one week later and it was awesome. Well suffice to say its... More

Rocky Road is a fantastic place to stay. Beautiful chalets and luxury tents stand in a magnificent garden. Close to Birds of Eden, Monkeyland and Jukani - some of the most amazing tourist attractions. Great cooking facilities or food offered. Friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Stunning, spotless bathrooms.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Rocky Road Backpackers in The Crags, about 18 kms to the east of Plettenberg Bay, is on a secure rural small holding set adjacent to indigenous forest and surrounded by open green pastures with wonderful views of the Tsistsikamma Mountain foothills. Our tranquil, laidback base is the perfect place in which to relax and enjoy nature far from the rush of normal day to day living. The well maintained large gardens have many shaded ‘chill spots’ where one can unwind with a book or the company of others while the plunge pool is a great spot to take off the heat on those hot daysIt’s also a great spot from which to explore and experience the many attractions that the Plettenberg Bay region has to offer. We are close to the world’s highest Bungy, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, The Elephant Sanctuary, The Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre and unspoilt Natures Valley. We’re well positioned for marine boat safari’s, game reserves and a vast network of scenic hiking trails covering forest, mountain and coastline.Rocky Road Backpackers is conveniently located a mere 2 kms from the N2 and is listed in the current editions of Coast to Coast, The Alternative Route and is also an accredited Baz Bus stop. Our accommodation is the standard mix of dorms, twins and doubles in the main farm house, bungalows and fully equipped luxury safari tents while those preferring to provide their own tents are free to do so.. Our entertainment areas come alive after working hours with an enclosed veranda/bar area with two fireplaces, the outside fireball for fireside chats and when the plunge pool is swung over to the hot tub on Friday nights. Rocky Road has a well established reputation for its quality farm style breakfasts and evening meals – roasts, casseroles, stews and, of course, the end-of-week braai’s. It goes without saying that the social happenings also add to the memories, which is why many people have returned to continue their experience of Rocky Road. ... more   less
