Detailed Reviews
We have over the years used this hotel to meet up with friends either just going for lunch or on several occasions having one or two nights stay.
Covid-19 was well catered for with lots of hand steriliser, table service, masks in public areas etc etc. Our rooms were large but very tired and in need of updating.
At check in we were given our room keys and two vouchers per room £5 off drinks and 10% off food but when handed in before checkout nothing was deducted from our bill. Why give vouchers then not accept them is a mystery.
Thank you to all the hardworking staff

Dear Denise Thank you for taking the time to write your review following your recent stay at Rowton Hall. My apologies if you found the room to be tired and in need of updating, I can confirm that we do have a maintenance and improvement programme for the accommodation at the hotel, but like many things this is currently on hold. I have had a look at your account and note that there was no drinks to discount and that you were on an inclusive package therefore no additional food for the 10% discount to apply. On a positive note that you for the note with regards to the hard working team. I do hope we'll have the opportunity to welcome you back to Rowton Hall. My partner and I, along with our 17 month old daughter have just returned from a one night stay at Rowton Hall and the hotel completely exceeded my expectations, it was absolutely beautiful. Not sure what hotel some of the other trip advisors stayed at but I don’t think it was this one!
The hotel itself is very grand - it would be a lovely wedding venue. The decor and features are stunning.
We arrived mid-afternoon on Friday, checked in and went to our room. We had booked a superior room with breakfast and had room 120. It was double the size I was expecting so that was lovely. In the main room was the bed, tv, tea and coffee making facilities, small table and two chairs. In the next room was a dressing table, built in wardrobes which housed a full size ironing board and iron, hairdryer, bath robes, slippers and a safe. Then the bathroom, it was beautiful, lots of wall mirrors with a large bath and separate shower. Staff had also provided a travel cot with mattress and linen and a child’s blanket.
We had a look at the swimming pool and spa area before going out for the evening. Children can use the swimming pool between certain times but staff did say if it’s quiet at any other time, it would be ok. Towels and robes are provided free of charge at the spa.
We returned to the hotel at around 8pm and went into the bar for a few drinks. The bar area is also very regal looking and staff were attentive. We had two pints and two cocktails (amaretto sours) and it came to £27.
We had a good nights sleep and used the tea making facilities before getting ready and going for breakfast. We were seen to a table in the window and was provided with a high chair for our daughter. Breakfast was included in the price so we each had a hot breakfast and some white toast. Our daughter had some cereal and a croissant from the buffet selection. The food was beautiful and locally sourced, some of which is grown in the gardens at the hotel.
The staff at Rowton are wonderful. So very polite, friendly and attentive. They are all dressed smart and come across so professional. Thank you to each and every one of you for making us feel so welcome and interacting with our daughter - other hotels make us feel as though she is a hindrance! We will most definitely return and will happily recommend this hotel to friends and family.
See you soon!

We booked two twin rooms for our family of four. The hotel is attractive and we were looking forward to a relaxing experience and a swim in the pool. On check in I asked to book a time to use the pool that afternoon / evening. The receptionist told us to look in the info pack he gave us. When we got to our rooms and looked in the pack and tried to book access to the pool, we were told there was no availability in part because of reduced numbers in the pool as a result of covid but also because external members use the pool. The pool was the reason why we booked the hotel so we were disappointed. The only session we could book was at 7 am the following morning which was earlier than we would have liked and then for only 3 of our party. A staff member did call our room at 730 am to advise a regular member had left so there was now availability for one extra person in the pool for 30 minutes which was appreciated.
One of the rooms we were allocated was smaller than i would have expected and extremely ‘tired’. Furnishings were very worn and unattractive. Lamps had serious scorch marks and curtains couldnt be easily closed without standing on a chair to encourage the rings to travel over a flexible pole. Wallpaper was lifting from the walls and needed cleaning. The small bathroom had three flies in it when we checked in and a small window. We called reception and they came to spray the bathroom but further flies appeared in both bathrooms overnight. In the better room if you sat in the chair at the dresser there was no filling so most uncomfortable and the fitted wardrobe was bashed and marked.
We ate out that evening but were looking forward to enjoying breakfast which was included in our rate the next morning. The meat eaters among us were happy and our kids loved the pancakes with syrup. As a vegan my choice was limited, no soya based yoghurt available, avocados which were on the menu were not available. I asked for fruit tea and the waitress thought they might have ‘a strawberry one somewhere’. I had got some tea bags with me so just asked for boiling water. After asking three times it finally appeared.
On checkout we mentioned the flies issue, and were thanked for the information.
The communal areas of this hotel seemed very nice but my advice is book a more expensive room. This was so much less of a treat than we were expecting.

I had never been here before so I read some reviews and booked an over night stay for my girlfriends birthday.. I rang up to query the menu for the evening which was sent via email straight away.. I also asked if they could maybe put a little note in the room for when my girlfriend arrives to make it that extra special.. we walked into the room and the staff had left a card wishing my girlfriend happy birthday from the whole team and a plate decorated in chocolate with brownie pieces around the plate.. also the lady on reception was very helpful and pleasant and the staff in the bar were very assertive/pleasant.. the waiter after our meals brought out a plate with chocolate wishing my girlfriend happy birthday, he also was pleasant and very assertive..the food was faultless which deserves a big mention as i work for a contract catering company and have been a chef for years myself so I understand the effort from the kitchen team.. the room was clean and the bed was really comfortable so positive feedback for the housekeeping team too which should never be forgotten..all these little things add up when you arrive back and home and think back on your stay.. it was truly perfect.. thank you for making my girlfriends birthday so special, I shall be passing messages on to friends and family, keep up the effort you all put in because people like ourselves appreciate it..an over night stay like that will be remembered for many years.

This review is during the covid pandemic issues and this is our first visit to Rowton Hall, it was a mini break to recharge the batteries after working all through the current issues and needing a rest. A beautiful character house, unfortunately the spa was still closed but due to open soon, there was a reduction in staff on site, who did all they could do in the current climate, there was no housekeeping (staff kept us topped up with tea/coffee etc) or bathrobes which was explained in their email and totally understandable, a very limited food menu at present, service was good though. We treated ourselves to a suite which was lovely, and a decent size with plenty of room for clothing, a hairdryer, iron, safe, hospitality tray was provided. 3 TV’s! Including one in the bathroom. Be warned the shower temperate was hard to regulate and could be extremely hot. Some TLC required and updated a bit, however this may have been delayed because of the virus. Staff friendly and approachable who try very hard to make your stay enjoyable, look forward to visiting again when things are ‘normal’. A bin in the bathroom and some coat hooks for jackets, a support bar to help get in/out of bath/shower to prevent accidents would be welcomed. Bed was very comfortable. Thank you

We came across this wonderful hotel by chance when looking for somewhere to celebrate my friends 70th birthday after our cruise was cancelled. We where originally attracted by the web site photographs of the stunning grounds. Don’t get the wrong idea, yes we are in our 70’s and yes we like to cruise but we have sophisticated tastes for fine dining, beautiful surroundings and a barman who can mix a decent martini. We found it all at Rowton Hall and so much more. Check in was friendly and efficient. We where escorted to our delightful rooms, I felt like I was walking into a bedroom at Downton Abbey. I had a massive bed, refined period furniture with fine linens and a tray of delights including coffee, tea, milk, biscuits and mineral water. The situation with Covid 19 had insured that the room was not just clean but surgically clean. The bathroom had an enormous tub, a sink almost big enough to bathe in, delightfully soft towels warmed on a heated towel rail and splendid Elemis toiletries.
After quickly depositing our clothes in the dressing area it was time to test the barman, wow he didn’t disappoint!
We enjoyed several cocktails including a fabulous Martini and welcomed enthusiastically the complimentary Prosecco and very tasty canapés served as a prelude to dinner. Our dinner on both nights was delicious. I can’t fault this hotel and highly recommend it. I thank and congratulate the management and wonderful staff and hope to see you all again soon

Beautifully kept hotel and grounds. This was a restful stay with not much to do as spa and pool closed, expect for reading a book in the quiet terrace and peaceful garden.
The bedroom suite was spacious , comfortable I did experience the same issue with TV tuning as others but something that was easily able to resolve . We enjoyed both our lunch, dinner and breakfast , the chef clearly takes pride in the tasty food that is being presented .
We felt that those delivering the service were inexperienced or just rushed , hot drinks delivered without sugar and very little milk , had to go and get it myself after waiting too long .
There was a bill correction to be made on our final bill, to make use of your kind gesture of bar and food discount vouchers, seems from reading other reviews this is a common issue.
The vouchers are offered due to booking the room directly on the hotel website , so would recommend doing this as it is best price anyhow.

I stayed for the weekend for my birthday and despite covid, it was a pleasant stay even though the gym and spa were closed. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was nice. No buffet breakfast, you have to book a time and order but there was a good variety. Rooms are very big with both a shower and bathtub, bed was very comfortable. Also food is an all day menu as opposed to a lunch and dinner. The food was good quality overall. They also had a surprise dessert plate in my room with happy birthday on it for me in my room, which was really nice.
The downside is that they do not clean your rooms daily, so you have to use the same towels and make your own bed unfortunately. I think this is due to covid, but was disappointed by it as I like a fresh towels and my room cleaned. Also no mini fridge in the room, but there is kettle, tea/coffee, safe, hairdryer, ironing board and free WiFi. The TV had limited channels, only ITV and for some reason no BBC or Sky news which I thought was odd.
the shower is dated but pretty cool as you rarely see these old fashioned bathtubs anymore.
Overall a nice traditional countryside English hotel with large rooms. Very friendly staff and pretty gardens to sit outside. About 10 min drive to Chester city.

On arrival they put me in what I assume was the worst room in the hotel 208. It was very small, smelt of smoke and the only window was painted shut. I asked to be moved and they offered room 124, which was so much better. My question is, why not put me in that empty room to begin with surely the chances of me leaving the hotel with a better impression would have been enhanced. Makes no sense to me but anyway it didn’t matter based on what was to come. I had booked DBB so this included £30 towards dinner, on arrival I asked if I could dine in my room which they agreed, this was a big mistake. Obviously under the current circumstances, food is brought to your room they knock on your door and leave the tray outside. Which is totally acceptable, but unfortunately if you identify anything wrong the staff member has gone. So no condiments or sauces and let’s just say the food was desperate for it. The hotel rules stated that when you finished you needed to call reception to ask for your desert to be brought and tray to be taken away from outside the room. Of course the strategy hinges on the reception being manned. I called and it just rang, I left it 10 minutes it just rang, further 10 minutes same again on the forth occasion it was answered I ordered my dessert. It never arrived so I called reception, the result was obviously consistent. Eventually I gave up and went to sleep without the desert I had paid for, may be the hotel was in fact a health retreat and they were watching my calories for me. So on checkout my expectation was they would obviously reimburse the £30 food charge. Let’s just say that they wanted the £30 more than I did and that was the price the hotel had allocated to customer service. Rather than stand and argue about them not giving me what I had paid for and adding to the stress in my life I walked away with the departing comment ‘we will leave it there then’ from the reception manager ringing in my ears. Enjoy the £30, spend it well you worked hard to keep it!
