It was very nice to spend a night in a tulou and experience what it would be like for the Hakkas! Chickens, geese and cats are all roaming around, and day tourists come and go to take photos during the day. The room was simple, small and the mattress "Chinese style" ie very hard. It was clean, and the shower...

The worst place I have stayed in since the 1980s. Tiny damp room. Smelly matress on the floor - no bed. Damp mould smelling duvet and pillows and bed sheet complete with a pube and blood stain. Unfriendly staff when they were actually there. Bathroom too small to turn around in, and no glass in the windows so horribly cold...

Something different for us, instead of usual hotels, to stay in an original Hakka earthen building with chickens running around in the courtyard. The rooms are modern with TV, attached toilets, beds mostly tatami-styled and no air con. However, with a fan on, the room doesn't feel warm. Basic toiletries provided but you got to ask for towels. We had...

This place is fantastic! It's located in Taxia village, which is stunning and also conveniently located for visiting the various tulou in both Yongding and Nanjing counties. The room was simple but clean and had lovely views. I had a room on the fourth floor with a shared toilet which was on the ground floor. This wasn't a problem for...

We enjoyed being able to stay in a traditional tulou, a very neat experience. The rooms are basic but clean and newly refurbished (many had nice flooring, ours just had wooden planks). My family and I had 2 rooms, both had a bathroom (with squatter and shower right above it)...but one didn't have hot water so we all showered in...

This is a good place to stop in the middle of the tulou scenic area. The hotel is situated on the outskirts of the Ta Xia village, just a few minutes walk away. It is situated in an old tulou which has been renovated recently, while the family running the place has been there since the early seventies. The tulou...

Was a fantastic experience to stay in an authentic Tulou passed down from generation to generation (not sure exactly how old it was, but was a few hundred years old). Such a nice homely experience and I would do it again exactly the same way if I were to return. Well situated in a quaint little town. Home cooked meals...

We had a recent visit to Nanjing County and stayed in this excellent Tulou. Mr Zhang and his family were quite superb in arranging all our transportation and transfers. The Tulou itself is comfortable with smallish rooms, some en-suite. Excellent local Hakka food prepared by Mrs Zhang and her family. Their home-made yellow wine is wonderful and must be sampled....

This Tulou was also named the "Apron Tulou". I stayed in this very authentic tulou for 4 days 3 nights. This place was one of the very few tulous that is well equipped but not commercialized. Before I arrived in Xiamen, I was worrying how I could find my way to this Tulou in a small village. I emailed Mr....

“Remember to state whether you want a room with private bathroom or not. There are only 10 rooms in this tulou so it's better to state clearly what you want. They also own another model hostel building. Remember to tell them that you want to stay in "tulou" instead of the modern one. They name the authentic "tulou" as Hostel 1 and the modern place as Hostel 2.”
  • My room. Very decent, clean and comfortable
