The room itself however was a bit tired and in need of some refresh. The furniture was scuffed in places and in particular the lights were very dim. To this, the two recessed CFL room lights were caked with dust and other filth (see picture). Changing these lights to bright LEDs and vacuuming out the accumulated dust would be a simple device to make a difference.
We found the room only being cleaned every three days quite difficult - I know this is getting to be the norm post Covid but it's not great. There is a note that you can ask for cleaning every day. So we asked, but nothing happened. There is also a strange arrangement of hanging the towels outside the door in a bag by 11am to get them changed.
On the plus side however, the breakfast (included) was good and plentiful, the staff were polite and very helpful, and the hotel is very centrally located and within five minutes' walk from the station and close to many attractions. We had also used the bag forwarding service from our last hotel in Osaka, and this worked perfectly and was well worth the c£25 to avoid hauling them on the metros and on the train journey.
So overall we would recommend the hotel, mainly on account of its location, but attention especially to the lighting in the room would make a big different for a small change.
From arrival there was no possibility to early check inn, even offered for parents with children we were very tired after a long flight and the front desk just said no early check in without not even making an effort to see if a room was available. Staff speak very little English.
Biggest problem is the dirtiness, the room felt dusty from the first moment. On the first night my 5 months baby started sneezing frequently, we thought it was an allergy but after 3 days going on an about in Tokyo we realize she didn't sneeze outside, only in the room.
I then inspected the room better, there was piles of dust in corners, behind beds, on top of TV and lamps, behind curtains, the carpet on the entrance was the worst. The bathroom was not clean also, there was mold growing in the bathtub joints with the wall and in the sink. The in-room refrigerator was also moldy.
We then complained to the front desk and asked to deep clean (in Japanese and English), they cleaned the bathtub mold, and the air filter, but still there was hair and dust accumulating in the corners. I then complained to night staff manager and he offered a new room but he wanted to check, from my room I could hear the managers cleaning the next room, when they offered I then checked and showed that there was still parts with dust and mold, they cleaned a bit more and apologized saying that the room will be better cleaned next day.
Deep cleaning never happened on the following days even we complained every day. One day they left us a vacuum in our room to clean ourselves (I took this as a mistake, but it was clearly for us to deal with the dirt). They offered breakfast tickets as compensation, we tried the breakfast one day and never came back, the breakfast was so bad that even as free I prefer to eat somewhere else.
The manager has apologized by email and offered to return about 100$ of the cleaning fee (from a reservation we have paid more than 1000$), we have not yet seen the refund after 10 days.
Good things, location is very good and Wifi is also good.
The area was great with restaurants everywhere. It was also a few train stops from the heart of Shinjuku which can be overwhelming. The train was very easy to use and to get around, it was also very cheap.
The buffet breakfast wasn't great, really had nothing for a westerner to eat or very little. Could have some more variety.
The Breakfast spread was good and the dishes were being changed on alternate days.
The room was bit small but is quite good as per Tokyo Standards. The room has tea kettle besides this there is coffee machine at Lobby and all the utility items such as tooth brush, tooth paste, razors, tea bags, dairy whitener, sugar, etc are available free of cost. The towels were daily replaced. The room was cleaned on 3rd day. I would definitely stay again during my next visit
We called the front desk 3 times to try another nonsmoking suite or to even upgrade and they said that the hotel was fully booked out.
The entrance to the hotel was beautiful, new and fancy. When you got into the room it looked like an old beaten down motel room. It was the ultimate catfish experience (hotel version)
Other than being catfished, the lobby was nice, there are free drinks, and the morning buffet was acceptable (though you still had to pay the 1500yen/person with a coupon)
The staff was very friendly as well.
