This property is located within a very reasonable walk from the JR and Keisei Ueno stations, within 10min or less. It is convenient to Ameyoko, so you can easily walk to get yourself some cheap, but delicious street food.

The room we stayed in was on the small side, but I expected this and I’d say that it was a little bigger than what you’d get from a room at a Toyoko-Inn hotel (definitely the rooms at the Hotel Sardonyx were not dated). The bathroom area was a toilet, tub/shower combo and sink in very tight quarters, with hardly any free counter space. I’d experienced this kind of set up, before, so it wasn’t a surprise, but it may be too compact and tiny for those not used to bathroom areas like this.

The room itself was very clean and modern looking. It came with indoor slippers, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair dryer, among other things, which was useful. At an accommodation such as this, you’re understandably not going to get any nice views (we had a view of the expressway/highway and high rise buildings), it’s more for the sake of convenience of why most people would stay here. The WiFi offered at this accommodation is fast and was not spotty, one of the best connections I’ve experienced at a hotel in Japan.

The complimentary breakfast was served in a room that would seat about 15-20 guests max and you choose items from a menu and they deliver it to your table. Some of the menu items cost extra (it’s all specified), so if you don’t want to pay, just stick with the basics. The sandwich that we ordered was pretty good and it came with a side of soup.

Checking in and out was very easy and pleasant, since everything was prepaid. The staff here were friendly and we didn’t experience anything negative during our time here. We stayed here for our first night that we spent in Japan, and chose this hotel in Ueno, mainly due to how convenient it was to the train stations. As such, I’d personally recommend this hotel for those who want a centralized location to the JR and Keisei Ueno stations, for those who would prefer a complimentary breakfast included in their stay and anyone who wants a reasonably priced, clean room.

We stayed at Hotel Sardonyx Ueno for 6 nights during our time in Tokyo, and it was a great home base for our trip. There are a few metro stations close by, which made our city-wide travel very convenient.

The rooms and bathrooms were small, but I know that's common for Tokyo so I'm still giving this hotel 5 stars! The rooms were very clean and quiet (seemed to be sound-proofed well because the street outside isn't the quietest, yet we barely heard anything). We had the do not disturb sign on our door and every day housekeeping would leave a bag with clean towels on our door handle, which was thoughtful. On our last day, we were able to store our luggage at the front desk while we went out after check out since our flight wasn't until the evening.

We didn't have the chance to try their breakfasts because we were busy trying other food, but it was great to know they offered free breakfast!

For the price, convenience, and cleanliness, I'd definitely stay here again the next time I'm in Tokyo :)

The staff service is good. You can check in early and store your luggage. The hotel is in a good location. It is very close to Ueno Station and the subway station. There is a popular yakiniku restaurant around the corner. Ame Yokocho's popular gourmet food and drug stores are within walking distance. The room is cleaned and supplies are provided every day. It's great that you can pick it up at the counter. Travelers staying here almost don't need to bring personal cleaning supplies. From 3 p.m., capsule coffee and tea are provided for free at the counter. The hotel's breakfast is simple but delicious. It can be used in or taken out. If you don’t have breakfast, you can exchange it for cake. If you don’t have time to eat it that day, you can redeem it the next day. The staff at the counter can communicate in English. The accommodation fee is much cheaper than the two well-known business hotels opposite. It’s really great!

It can be reached in about 10 minutes from Kyoto Ueno Station. It is not difficult to find it by following the route taught on the hotel's official website. There is a family mart downstairs of the hotel, Ameyoko Town, with many restaurants to choose from, and it is also convenient to buy souvenirs. There are Donki, Takeiya, and Futaki no Fruits. The room is small but clean. The price also includes a simple breakfast. Although there are not many choices for breakfast, the quality and taste are ok. There are some bath salts, lotions, tea bags, etc. in the lobby that you can pick up if necessary. There are also disposable tableware, which is really considerate. The front desk staff has a good attitude and there are Taiwanese waiters. Overall, I am satisfied.

Hotel is gorgeous and the view is stunning. Location is fantastic as it is only a quick walk to the nearest site seeing areas. The complimentary breakfast was truly delightful, offering a delicious start to each day of our stay. The variety and quality of the breakfast options exceeded our expectations, making it a highlight of our mornings.

Additionally, our room was simply beautiful. Its aesthetics and comfort were second to none, providing a relaxing haven after a day of activities. The attention to detail in the room's design and amenities contributed to our overall enjoyment of the stay.

Hotel staff were so nice and friendly. Room was small but well designed for the small space, would be perfect for one person. For a couple, it was tight but manageable. Extremely close to the stations, a konbini steps away from the entrance, and plenty of food options within a few minutes. Breakfast was available every morning and was delicious and just the right amount to get your day started. Very accessible for getting around Tokyo. Great hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

This was a great deal. Very conveniently located near to street food and a huge market. We had <36 hours in Tokyo as part of a layover and decided to stay here since it was near the Tokyo Ueno station which is a straight shot to the airport by train. Very small rooms as others have mentioned but the bed was comfy with hybrid buckwheat hull pillows. Shower with great water pressure. Friendly and helpful staff. The breakfast was quite simple (I got buttered toast and coffee), so plan for more hearty breakfast elsewhere.

The hotel is very conveniently located, within walking distance from the train station, from which you can also go to the airport, and from metro stations (direct line to Ginza). Also in the area of the hotel there are several shopping centers, many shops that sell vintage branded bags and jewelry, many cafes and restaurants. There is a very beautiful park and museums nearby.
The hotel itself is small, with very small rooms. But in general, the rooms have everything. Breakfast takes place in the cafe on the 1st floor, you can choose 1 of 5 options (hot dog, pancake, toast and something else), tea, coffee. Breakfast is not essential, I wouldn't count on it. The hotel is not bad, but another time I would have chosen a hotel with larger rooms, but I really liked the area.

Disappointing. The staff was lovely but this is a SMOKING hotel and the job smoking rooms smell of smoke since smoking is permitted on every floor.

I didn't smell it initially but once I unpacked and was in bed I could smell it...then it progressively got worse.

The staff let me move rooms but unfortunately it smelled too.

Also the hotel is very worn.

Fantastic location for exploring the city. 5 mins walk to Okachimachi Stn, under 10mins for Ueno Stn. The walk to each is fascinating, always loads to see but not as manic as Shinbuya or Shinjuko. Many, many, many places to eat and drink in the myriad small streets behind the hotel, including loads where people lined up to get in. A couple of supermarkets within 2 mins walk for essentials plus typical Japanese fast food. Friday night strolling round the small eateries and bars just a few mins walk from the hotel was great fun (without the overly-touristic feeling of Golden Gai). Ameyoko is on the doorstep, with loads of market stalls. Ueno park is about 10 mins walk when you need some peace and quiet. The room was clean, well equipped and small, which is normal here. Breakfast was a bit basic, with a choice of either an egg roll (bread), sausage in a bread roll, pancakes or a chilli dog. Small fridge and Kettle in the room with teabags and coffee sachets in the lobby. There was no option to use the stairs, which meant a bit of a wait for the lift at busy times. Staff were friendly and happy to store luggage until check in time. A very good hotel!
