I really enjoyed the beautifully designed and maintained Japanese-style room and the room’s well appointed bathroom. Simple but elegant. If you are looking to sleep on a futon on tatami mats in an elegant, quiet Japanese-style room right next to Asakusa’s Kaminarimon, they offer that here. The bathroom was a delight with the most modern toilet on the market and a big shower/bathroom space that was so relaxing. If you are looking for a full service hotel with gym, and bar, and noise, this is not the place for you. I have been traveling to Japan for decades and stayed here for the first time in November 2024. I look forward to coming back.

This was one of our favorite places to stay during our honeymoon. The staff were incredibly friendly and gave us a sweet card and gift to celebrate our honeymoon. Our room was incredibly clean and spacious. We booked a traditional room and the futons were both very comfortable, although the pillows were slightly firm for our preference. Our room overlooked the Kaminarimon Gate, which was spectacular to see morning and night. Since we were right next to the gate and Sensoji temple, we also went out and explored at night when the crowds waned - something I'd highly recommend. We also ordered the breakfast, which was delicious! This is not your typical eggs, sausage and toast, but a truly traditional Japanese morning meal. If you're open to experiencing another culture's traditions, this addition is a must. Lastly, the ryokan is conveniently located near the Ginza and Asakusa subway lines, and we had no trouble getting anywhere we wanted during our five-day stay. We will definitely be staying here again on our next trip to Tokyo!

I booked this hotel to try something new in a new area for a night last month. As with new unknown hotels, there's always a risk, but was looking forward to try it out. Plans changed and I thought I had cancelled it online, but for some mistake, it wasn't properly cancelled. I later found out they charged me the full 90,000 JPY and told me to go take a hike. I get that it was my mistake and they have their policy, but these things can happen with online bookings. They never sent one single email to anticipate the check in or call me to ask if I'm going to show up or not. Nothing but a silent charge to my credit card. The least they could have done was to give me a credit for my to stay another time. Their response since then has been horrible customer service. They're not looking to build much of a reputation as a newcomer looking to cater to the foreign travelers! With inflexibility like that, they won't succeed. Beware!

I was surprised just how close the hotel was from Asakusa subway (about 1 minute walk!). I arriving from Tokyo station, it's a train ride to Ueno, followedy by 3 stops on the subway.

The hotel is nicely decorated and has a nice vibe and helpful staff. We stayed here for our last night in Tokyo and it was really nice to experience the ryokan style accommodation one last time. We booked with agoda and got a good rate. Be aware that there are a few rules you need to be prepared for (door closes between midnight and 6am, fixed times for showers), but these are pretty usual for Japanese inns and hotels.

There are lots of streets with good amosphere and outside eatiries nearby, just be aware that many of them serve local delicacies like pig guts and whale! However, we managed to find a nice play to eat with a bustling atmosphere.

We'd definitely stay here again!

I have been in many different hotels around Japan. This trip was centered in Tokyo and I wanted to re-visit my favorite spots at the city and get some shopping done. Thus, I wanted to stay at an easily accesible hotel. Hotel Kaminarimon's locations is just perfect. You can get there easily by Ginza line, Asakusa line and train lines, so you can move around the city with the super cheap metro passes for foreign tourists (my recommendation: 3-day special pass) and also get from and to Narita airport by just one train (1100 yen by the Keisei main line, instead of paying the extra charge for the Skyliner).
I stayed in one single room with bathroom. It was perfect. I had enough space for my lugagge, I could take a long bath every night after my excursions, it was always clean and they put clean towels every day, as well as new toileries (toothbrush, hair brush, razor). They also put hot water and green tea bags everyday.
The staff is wonderful. They were also very warm and make you feel like home. At the end of my stay they even gave me a lovely souvenir.
One of the wonders of staying here is that you can go visit the Sensoji area very early (before 8 am) or at night and get some awesome views and chances for photos without the usual crowd. The Sumigawa and the skytree are also right there.
If you are on a budget, you can get some of your meals (I always bought my breakfast the night before) at some of the supermarkets around.
I will go back for sure to the Kaminarimon.

Dear Yunuen M, Hello, this is Hotel Kaminarimon from Tokyo, Japan. Thank you very much for your review. We are very happy that you have enjoyed your stay in Tokyo this summer. Yes, we are proud to stand at the foot of Kaminarimon Gate, and we hope it was easy for you to find our hotel. As you have mentioned, our hotel also recommend metro passes for foreign tourists, and we too believe it is one of the efficient ways to travel around Tokyo. We are also glad that our cleanliness and service has met your standards. Asakusa is one of the few cities in Tokyo where you can feel the traditions of old Tokyo, "Edo", and we believe that you can encounter new findings every time you visit. Take care, and we look forward to serving you again! Kind Regards, HOTEL KAMINARIMON

Had a fantastic stay at this place. The staff are lovely - very helpful, courteous and all had enough English that we managed just fine. The whole place is spotlessly clean - we've been traveling round Asia for 8 months and this is the cleanest place we've stayed. The wifi signal is good, there is also a laptop available for guest use. They provide you with kimono style dressing gowns, 'slippers' and toiletries, as well as a flask of hot water and green tea each day. The rooms also come with TV.

This is a traditional hotel/inn, so it's futon mattresses on the floor and shared showers/baths (unless you book an en-suite). The rooms are small but most rooms in Tokyo are.

The location is superb, literally seconds from Kaminari-mon gate and a few mins walk to Sensō-ji temple. We didn't have a clue which area to base ourselves in Tokyo but made the right decision with Asakusa. As others have mentioned, it's not on the JR Line but it's only 2 stops (or about 20 mins walk) from Ueno, which is. Plenty of eateries, 7Elevens etc around. It's a touristy area but has a real buzz from morning till night.

We originally booked for 3 nights, with a view to moving to a cheaper hostel for the remainder of our time in Tokyo but the combination of comfort, location and price (Tokyo is so expensive that you soon realise that £60 per night for a mattress on the floor is actually a good deal), meant that we stayed here for 10 nights in total. The staff gave us a little gift each when we left!

We would definitely recommend hotel Kaminarimon and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

I'm really surprised that this place doesn't have more reviews or isn't in the top 10 (as of my review date) because it was an amazing stay! The location is excellent - I was able to see the Kaminari-mon passage and market from my window! It's also surrounded by excellent restaurants and sights and the metro station was 2-3 minutes away - incredibly convenient! Being close to a main road, you would also have no trouble hailing a taxi if needed.

The room I stayed in was still very brightly lit and spacious (had enough room for my suitcase, closet and a private shower). It was spotless and the mattress was thick enough that I didn't have to request a second. There was also free internet and a good TV. Bath towels, robes, slippers et all were spotless. I had a great view outside my window, and it was very quiet.

The staff (counter manager, cleaning staff, etc) were very friendly. Unfortunately, depending on who was at the front desk, not all of the staff spoke English (though they had at least one manager that did speak English to help facilitate my reservation and answer my questions by email). One manager I spoke with was very nice and provided me with a number of excellent suggestions on nearby attractions and where best to view the cherry blossoms during my stay in April.

The one drawback is that there's no second door for which they can allow you to enter with a separate key or pass if you wish to return pass curfew. But as long as you let them know in advance you plan to return after curfew (I think it was 12am) then you should be fine.

In short, this was a great place to stay and I would definitely stay there again! Just an interesting note - I came across this ryokan after the infamous Sawanoya and Annex Katsutaro (both of which were ryokans I stayed at prior and loved) were full. I asked them if they had good suggestions and eventually came across Hotel Kaminarimon. By the way, this seems to have served me well in Japan - people giving helpful advice/suggestions on what to eat and places to stay. Even if they are competing ryokans, it seems ryokan owners/managers are well aware who of their peers are among the best (as further exemplified by Sawa-san recommending Annex Katsutaro to me a few years ago when they didn't have rooms for me during certain nights).

Unfortunately, we do not have a completely non-smoking room at our hotel. For those who prefer a non-smoking room, we do our best to get rid of the cigarette smell before the guest arrives. Please note that there may be a slight smell of smoke when you go out from your room as other customers might be smoking in their rooms. We hope that this answer your inquiry.
