I was a teenager in Japan in the late fifties and have been back many times since. I enjoy staying in traditional Japanese style inns (Ryokan). This was far and away the best experience I have ever had. If you are looking for traditional Japanese this is the place. The location is outstanding. Mere blocks from plenty of shops and restaurants. In addition when jet lag gets you up at 3am there is a 24hour Seven Eleven a block away and a 24hour McDonald's about three blocks away.

The proprietor, Mr Kiyoshi Endo is unbelievable. Friendly, helpful and available at all hours. The place is clean clean clean and has a Japanese onsen (hot bath) that was perfect. As is typical in a Ryokan slipper type footwear and Ukata (a cotton Kimono) are available so no need for your own loungewear.

The breakfast is traditional Japanese. Good and plentiful.

If I could rate this place ten stars I would.

I'm not sure if my name comes up on this review so it is Orlando Stephenson and you can leave a message on my facebook page if you want more information

I was torn between staying at a hotel or a ryokan, but I decided to go with a ryokan. I wanted to stay in Asakusa, but most of the ryokans there were quite expensive. This ryokan, however, was relatively affordable. The service and location were also pretty good, so overall, it was a nice choice!

My husband and I and our two children, 13 and 11, stayed for 5 nights in a B type room and absolutely loved every minute. It was easy to get to from the airport via train at night and we were very surprised how much room we had -even with the four futons out we still had room around our little table to sit and enjoy a cup of tea after full days sightseeing. The futons were lovely, warm and comfortable (commented on by both kids!!) and VERY quiet at night (which I was very thankful for). We had breakfast (2 Japanese and 2 western) for the last two days and regret not getting them earlier-delicious and filling. Yes the bathroom is small but certainly adequate for what you need to do in there. All up terrific, last year we stayed at a expensive hotel in Shinjuku (which was great) but I would choose Ryokan Kamogawa again without hesitation.

I stayed here for two nights, and was very satisfied with the room, and the hotel facilities. The room was lovely, with a separate living room, where a flask of hot water and Japanese tea awaited us. The futon mattresses were thick and very comfortable. There was air-conditioning in both rooms, although we didn't need to use it. The free wifi was very good, and we had a safe, a mini fridge, and a tv. We were also provided with slippers and robes.
The staff on reception were friendly, attentive and helpful. We were able to book private sessions in the communal bath -really like a jacuzzi, without the jets. It was lovely and relaxing, and we availed of it both days.

As a followup to our previous review, we did indeed stay once again at Family Hotel Kamogawa for the fantastic New Year's celebrations in Asakusa from December 25th, 2007 through January 2nd, 2008. And once again, we had a wonderful experience, enjoying their very traditional Japanese hospitality. All of the staff were unfailingly kind and helpful, particularly Mr. Hiroyuki Yajima, the general manager. There's a very sleek and comfortable new shower room on the second floor, which is generally intended for western visitors. The Japanese bathhouse on the lobby level continues to be a relaxing delight. And don't be concerned about using the communal toilets on each floor...they're western-style, spotlessly clean, and have all of the high-tech amenities peculiar to Japan, including heated seats and cleansing sprays from below! The cafe which adjoins the lobby is also a nice spot for either western or Japanese breakfasts. We now tend to think of the Hotel Kamogawa as our home-away-from-home when we're in Tokyo, and can hardly imagine staying anywhere else in that huge, amazing city.

We took a taxi here and he had a little bit of trouble finding this.

It is definitely walkable to Sensoji temple as well as Tokyo Sky Tree.

We only stayed here one night on our way back from Osaka. It was cute and had a little Japanese bath. We slept on mattresses on tatami mats. There was a separate room that had a table. We did not stay for breakfast as we were leaving on another trip that morning. The bathroom was quite small but they provide soap and shampoo so all the necessary things. It did get cold here the night we stayed and my only gripe is that the heater had no English instructions so we weren't sure how to work it.

FYI, was difficult to get a taxi from here. I would recommend acknowledging that you will walk from the subway stop to and from here...unless you can flag a cab on the street.

Thank you for your staying and posting a comment. We are sorry for your getting cold! We are making an English instruction for air-conditioner. If there is any question, we are glad to be asked. You can call "9" to the front desk from the phone in your room. The bath in each guest rooms is not so large, so that in the next stay, if you would like to stretch your leg in bath tub, we recommend you to try the family bath on the 1st floor. Since our building is facing to a one way road, some of the taxi get confused. The nearest landmark is "Asakusa Public Hall (Asakusa Koukaido)". We are on the kitty-corner from it. <Access around Asakusa area from our hotel> Asakusa station ... 5 minutes by walking. Sensoji temple ... 5 minutes by walking. Tokyo Sky Tree ... "7 minutes by walking + 3 minutes by train (Tobu Sky Tree Line)" or "22 mins by walking". We look forward to the possibility of serving you again. Thank you.

Stayed in this ryokan with my family in November 2016. This was our first time staying in a ryokan with floor mattresses and tatami mats. Sleeping on the floor was actually very comfortable. The rooms were a decent size and there was a private bathroom. There were a couple of minor issues with the room (one heater didn't work, remote to turn on lights out of batteries). We tried the western breakfast and we were very impressed with how balanced and fresh this was. The ryokan is within easy walking distance to the Sensoki temples and shopping/restaurants in Asakusa. I would caution non-smokers that the hotel lobby and restaurant are very smoky during the day - seemed that both locals and tourists were smoking in these areas. Fortunately the rooms themselves do not smell like cigarette smoke.

Bad element 1 - The shower/bath is short and skinny, BY JAPANESE STANDARDS.
It's smaller than my suitcase.
The bath is ~40cm (I measured at the widest bit it gets thinner in the middle) wide and ~80cm long and ~50cm deep. However, It's only use is as a shower (sort of) or a bath for the under 7 year olds. This takes up about the same amount of room allocated for the toilet, which is right next to it. Gesture to wildly whilst washing your hair and the shampoo ends up in the toilet.

Bad element 2 - The cigarette smoke in the ryokan is awful. Our room was non-smoking and so smelt ok but the minute you opened the door, you'd feel queasy it was so strong. Also some people whom we guessed were the owner's friends given their manner and relaxation, regularly congregated in the foyer smoking like the proverbial chimney.

Bad element 3 - Poor sleep quality. There was not enough bedding (even though we used the extra in the cupboard) so I got cold as I slept and although there was an aircon heater we couldn't make it work to blow consistent hot air despite following the instructions provided. There was also lots of noise from the outside alleyway in the wee hours and the doors of other rooms sounded very loud.

Perhaps we were just unlucky but I'm never staying here again and I don't recommend it as a place to stay.

Good elements: Great location, great staff with good english, free breakfast of toast etc, nice sento (right next to the foyer so if you pop down to the bath people walking past in the street could see you through the glass doors if they happened to look at the right moment) with a lockable door so you can go down as a party. It's well priced and convenient.

Note: There are no arrangements for you to do washing. You can get to the 2 coin laundries in the area (one on the main road one literally right behind it but you have to got round the block to get to it. Note: Not open on a Thursday and the owner is a rude battle axe who runs the sento next door, mentioned in the lonely planet tokyo guide 2010) by a short walk. To get there go out the main entrance turn left walking away from the temple. At the main road go left a few blocks and walk down the covered mall area until you reach ?kaminarimon dori? with the ROX 3 building on your right (there's also an entrance to the Asakusa JR station here). Turn left and it should be on your left within 500m. There is soap for purchase, ~6 washing machines and 4 large dryers. 100 yen coins only. We were desperate for a wash and fold service after a while.

I did a lot of research before selecting this place. I chose it because it had three great things going for it: Location, availability, and cost. Its location is fantastic -very pedestrian friendly. 3 minute walk from Asakusa station, and less than that to the Ginza line entrance. Less than a minute walk to the Nakamise Dori shops and less than 5 to the Sensoji Temple, plus it is also within a 5 minute walk from a supermarket and the Matsuya Department store which has the most amazing prepared food market place in its basement. Additionally, there were a lot of local, inexpensive food options with in a 2 block radius, including a wide selection of yakatori, soba, tempura, sushi and the like. We stayed in a large Japanese style room with a bath which was ~$140 US dollars ($70 a person). The room was spacious with a screen dividing the sleeping area from the tea area. Very clean - the only slightly negative thing which seems to plague many ryokans is a slightly smoky/musty smell. It was not bad enough or distracting enough to diminish the experience in any way though. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, though their English was somewhat limited. They let us check in a few hours early without any difficulty. Our last night we had to move to a smaller room without a bath, which turned out to be just as pleasant. And the public toilet and bath were fantastic. We still had enough room for our luggage which was substantial: Two large suitcases, two carry-ons, a stroller and other miscellaneous things. Noise didn't seem to be an issue. The other rooms were occupied but we never heard anyone, but we did get to meet a fellow traveler (from London) over breakfast. It was a good choice for traveling with a 20-month old. There is also a basic but nice playground nearby for kids to let loose in. We would definitely stay there again.

The senso-ji area has many small streets, so while the ryokan is super-near (2 min walk to Senso-ji?) it took me more than 30 min to find it.

So for those who are looking for this ryokan, when you are facing the temple itself, look for the signboard in the picture. Take the path (also in the picture). The path will have both right and left turns. At one of the junction, you will see a Japanese convenience/drugstore (selling umbrellas, cosmetic etc like Guardian's). Turn left at the next turn.

The staff can speak English, and they have a cafe for paid breakfast which serves both Japanese and Western breakfast. They also have a indoor onsen which you can reserve at 30-min slots.

There are many shops and restaurants nearby.

The breakfasts are made to order individually I think 6.30 maybe too early but you could ask.Tokyo has plenty of bakeries where you could get something the day before there is a fridge and kettle in the room so you could make your own breakfast.

Its probably 10 minutes walk go the train and then30 minutes to the airport. The problem is finding the train platform .We spent the best part of an hour working in out the day before we left.
