Detailed Reviews
All hotels in Tokyo are going to be on the smaller side unless you are paying a wad of cash. Hotel Mystays Asakusabashi is no exception to that. But that's about the only downside I can think of for what I am paying. It is super close to the JR Asakusabashi station. They even come with laundry machines free of charge! Highly recommended for a no frills place to call a night.

Location of the hotel is superb. Nxt to JR ( 3 minute walk ) & subway ( 10 minute walk ). Lawson grocery store just next door which is connected with the hotel and Mini Aeon store just opposite of hotel.

We stayed here in 2014. Clean, good 18sq. room with nice bedding, close to JR line. Convenient location. Walking distance to some nice little restaurants.
Good value for money. Has a convenience store next door, washing machines and dryers.

Booked this budget hotel for the Olymips in 2020, they charged me over £1500 for 9 nights stay. Due to covid, flight restrictions and the postponement of the Olympics i asked for a refund but the hotel have refused. Shameful that a company can treat it's customers like this in such desperate times. Avoid and look for somewhere else in Tokyo.

Oddly enough, we got lost for an hour as we came out the wrong exit to get to this hotel and the instructions to the hotel weren't very clear. Hotel is okay, lift is a little small and the second time we had to go back to Tokyo our room was much bigger and better.
This is a 10 year review so things are likely to have changed drastically.

Positives:
Excellent customer service. I walked into the hotel at around 9am and I was greeted by the service staff. Immediately he asked if I was there to check-in and scanned through the list of check-ins and got my name. He said that we are able to leave our luggage there till check-in timing. Guess what? All these without needing to even say anything! I was so impressed. After my friends and I came back at night, we were greeted with a smile and handed our card keys to our rooms. We requested for our baggage but was pleasantly surprised when they told us that all baggage were already in our rooms! Wow. After this, I was SO impressed. True enough, our luggages were nicely lined against the wall in one of the rooms. Imagine after a very tiring day and you get service and smiles like this. It really helped make me very happy.
Rooms were larger than I expected. I don't stay in luxury hotels much so please manage your expectations when you read my comment. There was a mini bath tub which was great to soak in. And enough space for me and my friends to open our luggages (His was small, mine was a standard large). Of course, its still Tokyo so I had to jump over to get through. Not a problem though.. my luggage was closed most of the time. There was room service and of course, cleanliness was kept to a maximum. The double bed was sufficient for 2 averaged sized asians (both me and my friend were normal built, 170cm and 175cm guys, my two other friends in another room were both 180cm and they were comfortable too). Not sure whether it would be comfortable for Europeans and Americans because you guys tend to be a bit larger. Free Green Tea, hotel slippers and Yukatas, shavers, toothbrushes, creams, which was good. AND A HEATED TOILET SEAT AND BIDET!!!
The location of the hotel is excellent. It is a 5 minute walk to the Asakusabashi metro station and 1-2 minutes walk from the Asakusabashi JR line (Which is located BEHIND the hotel). To those that need directions from the metro, Come out by Exit A2 from the metro station, walk straight till you get to the small road, turn right and walk all the way in, right past a supermarket, until you see a lawson station. Turn right at the junction and you'll see the signage. For the JR line, when you come out of the ticket gantries, turn right to exit the station and turn right once more. Walk straight till you get to the junction and turn left after that. The hotel entrance is just there. Admittedly, the hotel entrance is slightly concealed, so open your eyes to look out for it! (I hope this helps people!)
There are lots and lots of cheap food around, whether on the main street or behind the hotel, quality of food is a given, so don't worry about ordering cheaper food because, honestly, standards in Japan don't disappoint (unless you are a food connoisseur.. then...)
We only came here to sleep, so for the price we paid, it really exceeded our expectations. I was comfortable and I felt well taken care of and I will gladly come back to any of the branches of the Hotel Mystays chain.
Negatives:
Firstly, hotel staff do not speak excellent English. They speak VERY BASIC English so manage your expectations, do not get frustrated. This is, after all, a smaller chain of hotels.
There was a big of a mix-up. DO NOT USE THE SPECIAL REQUESTS IF YOU CAN. I requested for adjoining rooms and late check-out of 8-9pm. Both were approved. HOWEVER, the Japanese took 'adjoining rooms' to be 'adjacent rooms'. So I don't think they had adjoining rooms. Secondly, my second request was also initially denied and I was asked to pay for late-checkout. I was quite shocked and unhappy about that and I had to show them the email which was unfortunately in English as well. It took them awhile and a bit of time to translate and talks with their manager before they acceded to our request. Take note, I WAS TOLD THE SPECIAL REQUESTS FUNCTION IS NOT DIRECTLY AFFILIATED TO THE HOTEL SO DO NOT TRUST IT, DO NOT USE IT. Even if you do, expect your approved request to get rejected at the hotel. This is just to save yourselves trouble, because there is no point arguing with Japanese if they don't even understand what you are arguing about.
There is NO wifi in the rooms. There is an ethernet cable, but no wifi. My friends and I rented a portable wifi for our whole trip so it wasn't an issue but to those that do not have portable wifi, take note.
*ROOMS LOOK EXACTLY LIKE THE PICTURES. FACILITIES AS WELL. So that was a big plus.

Thank you for staying at Hotel Mystyas Asakusabasi. Thank you for you positive and negative comments. Your positive comments encourage us to do better and your negative comment help to find our weak point. Both commets need us to give hospitality service. Thank you for giving your valuable time. We are very happy that you appreciate our staff. We will keep your luggage and put in your rooms when you arrived before the check in time. You stayed at double room, so it comfortable for 2 Asian people. We also have bigger size room like superioer double room and twin room. Please check our room on our website www.mystays.com . As you say the toothbrush, towel and shampoo are in the room and other amenities are in the first floor. We are very sorry that we got misunderstanding about your Special request. We got a special request from booking.com by you that you want to check out at 20pm or 21pm. We thought that you want to check out one day before and we accept mistakenly. . Because normally the check out time is 11 am and extend until 14pm but have to pay extra charge 2000 Japanese yen per hour. We have to clean the room after you check out and have to sell same room to another customer at same day. When you check out at 20pm we could not clean that room and have to shift customer to another hotel. If you told us at check in time that you want to check out at late night, there would not be misunderstanding. Its our mistake that we would not say the check out time when you check in. And your next request was you could not fulfill because we had not adjoing room. We have limited staff we can speak English. We are very sorry that we make you fill uncomfortable. We will accept your request if we can. As you say the wi-fi is only in the lobby. We are lending wi-fi router to the room but stock is limited. We are providing free wi-fi in the room soon.

I made an advance booking for 5 nights for a 19 square metre room with two deluxe single beds with views of Tokyo Skytree Tower. This hotel was our sightseeing base. We were going to be out and about.
The room did not disappoint. Modern but not luxury but with all the facilities you require with comfortable beds and room to move around.
Incredible value hotel in a perfect location on the edge of central Tokyo with easy JR train access to all places of interest and areas on the two most popular train lines, the Chuo and the Mananouchi lines, also close to Metro lines for Ginza and Asakusa. We loved the neighbourhood with its little suburban restaurants and coffee shops everywhere. A convenience store next door.
One stop over was Ryogoku where the Sumo wrestling competitions are held and we were able to see many of the wrestlers on their way to the stadium. One station the other way was Akiharbara - for all electronics. A few stations up the line with one change is Euno - a must go, especially with children. A few stations down the line with one change is Tokyo.
Well run hotel with helpful staff, sometimes a language problem but ok. Laundry facilities free - pay only for powder. Iron & stand available. Free wifi in lobby. I used it while I did the laundry just off the lobby.
We would definitely stay at this little hotel again if we return to Tokyo. Great experience. Super value. Highly recommended.
Note: We had 7 day JR Rail for long distance rapid train travel throughout Japan. While in Tokyo just buy daily JR city rail passes at 750yen each to get around. For Asakusa or Ginza line (private railways) travel just buy a metro ticket when needed.

I've stayed here for 5 nights and I have nothing but praises.
Pros:
- Cleanliness (god knows how important this is)
- Facilities (dryer/washer/free moisturizers/shavers that can be taken for free from the lobby)
- Room (comes with hairdryer/room slippers/mini fridge/kettle/toothbrush/toiletries)
- Right next to a 24 hour convenience store. Helps when I'm hungry at night :)
- Right behind the Chuo Sobu Line that leads you to Shibuya/Shinjuku with train change
Cons:
- Wifi provided only in lobby and not in the rooms. I've been to Japan 5 times and this is actually the first time I encountered a hotel with no wifi in the rooms. Even the hostels I stayed in provided Wifi. I think Wifi is quite important? Granted, there's wifi access IF you bring your laptop but it's so inconvenient :(

Very comfortable western style rooms. Tremendous bargain price for what you get. Perhaps 30 meters N of Asakusabashi, with a Metro entrance on the corner. Great toiletries.
By walking to corner and turning right, I could easily walk down past Ueno Station to Ueno Park and all those museums. Zoo's right in the park too. Tips: the subway entrance nearer the hotel is eastbound (Ueno to Asakusa), To take Metro to Shinjuku, Tokyo Station, etc, you cross to the S side a Asakisabashi. The better Nearby restaurants are on that side of the street as are the luxury shops selling lacquer cabinets. Incidentally, there's an excellent grocery store inside the JR station at Ueno that has foreign food that are hard to find elsewhere in town--from Beaujolais Nouveau and European chocolate to American junk foods like Snyder pretzels and Doretos.
By walking to corner and turning right, it's an easy walk to Asakusa and the temple complex, as well as the sprawling shop and restaurant complex. Tip: if there you can walk across the bridge to the giant golden flame, which is the Asahi brewery beer-hall.

The room:
My room (room #504) stank of smoke. I am a non-smoker, so this was a big problem. I was not informed my room would stink. I asked for a room change but was told that the hotel was full. Their solution was to give me a air-freshener spray. The smell was so intense I found it difficult to sleep. The night temperature in Tokyo was about 5C, but I kept the window open to alleviate the stench.
Bathroom:
The bathroom was small, but have bath tub and shower. They supplied a toothbrush which was replaced daily.
Location:
The hotel is about 1-2 minutes from the JR East station, West Exit. Being close to Akihabara, it is well located. They also have a basic local map, though some Tokyo tourist maps would have been appreiciated.
Internet:
Wifi is only available in the lobby, but the room did have a network cable.
Staff:
The hotel staff were polite and had decent working English. Though unable to help with room smelling.
Laundry/Toiletries
There is a free to use laundry room next to the lobby. Also in the lobby is a cabinet with free
razors, shower caps, ear buds.
Overall:
I would have given the hotel a 4, if the room was in decent condition. Confirm the state of the room being booked if you choose this Hotel. Tokyo is great, the poor lodging did not spoil the trip, but it should not have been an issue.
**Perfect if you happen to smoke 100 a day**
