Old Theatre Inn is a registered historic landmark and features one of the best examples of theatre temple architecture in Yunnan. Dating from 1780, the theatre temple once was a village school which was converted into five boutique guestrooms. At Old Theatre you will find friendly local village staff, great homemade meals, trails into the mountains, a cozy library and unsurpassed views of the Shaxi valley from our terrace. Come see why Old Theatre Inn is consistently ranked one of the best small hotels in China.
As part of a 3 week 2016 China journey including Shanghai, Beijing, Great Wall, Xi'an we spent 6 days in Yunnan. Stops included LiJiang, Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, Dali, Xixhou Village and Shaxi. Shaxi is a quiet, beautiful village on an historic section of the ancient Tea Horse road. We stayed at the Old Theatre Inn which began as a village location for live theatre. The small number of rooms are good size, comfortable, clean and traditional area decorated. The Inn includes a main building and restaurant. The food was excellent and delicious. A great setting to eat, relax, talk and enjoy your favorite libation. We enjoy local flavor, so took a local bus from LiJiang to Jianchuan town center, maybe 2 hours. A private driver than took us to the Inn, about 20 minutes. The Inn provides a ride to the nearby Shaxi village to walk around and enjoy. Worth the time. I would definitely return to the Old Theatre should I ever return to Yunnan Province.…

Really enjoyed our two night stay at the old theatre inn. Such a beautiful historic building. Rooms were cozy and comfortable. As it’s a historical building water pressure was a little low but this is a minor detail when staying somewhere so magical. Enjoyed delicious dinner and breakfast at the Inn. We had a car so it was easy to get around. Hotel is set in a small village about 2k from Shaxi old town. Was so glad to be staying here and not in the town itself. Staff were so helpful, efficient and kind. A great stay!

This is an amazing little boutique hotel with 5 rooms in a small village just 4km outside of Shaxi. The hotel is situated in a 200 year old complex with an old community theater. The rooms are very stylish and comfortable. The hostess, Sam, is very helpful and speaks decent English. Furthermore, her staff prepares amazing dinners for 55 CNY per person, absolutely amazing. Breakfasts are tasty as well. Sam is also willing to help with laundry and other things as well. I absolutely recommend this place! We had a great stay!

A magic place in the countryside; rooms are not huge but very tasteful, with a perfect shower. The restaurant is good, with a wine list, and breakfast also very good. If you fancy something out of the ordinary and enjoy silence, this is the place for you.

My husband and I stayed two nights in July 2018 in this fascinating place and we really enjoyed the stay. The staff is kind and helpful, tea and homemade biscuits were waiting for us at our arrival. The room is clean and has a kind of eco-eastern atmosphere and we appreciated the peacefulness of the place. Breakfast was ok: good bread and excellent homemade jam. The thing we enjoyed most was having dinner on the balcony in front of the old stage: a unique and romantic atmosphere! There is just one thing to improve: the food was good, but not very tasty.

Such a change from the souless modern places. The rooms were beautifully decorated and the whole place is a delight to stay in. The surrounding countryside is peaceful and fascinating. We had an explore using the bikes form the hotel which was a lot of fun. The old town of Shaxi is great, good for tourists but not overdone at all.

The Inn is in a quiet spot a 40 minute walk from Shaxi village, overlooking fields where one sees hard working women planting seeds. The Old Theatre was lovingly restored, our bedroom was nice in one of the original rooms of the 200 year old Inn. clearly the bathroom had been added more recently. It was simple but functional. Jessica and Sam seem to take turns on being on duty. Jessica's English was quite good, Sam's not so good but we could get by. Breakfast was good and there was a good choice. Dinner was okay but nothing to write home about. They do stock Australian wine which they sell only by the bottle, but can keep it for you to finish the next day. When the weather was warm, we enjoyed having our dinner on the balcony overlooking the courtyard.

Dear Angela, It's such a pleasure to have guests like yourself who appreciate the beauty and quirks of our historic buildings. Sam and Jessica are both local people who are always working to improve their English so we're grateful for your kindness and patience. We will change our dinner menu for Spring now, so as to offer more seasonal fare that hopefully everyone will enjoy. Be well and safe journey, Old Theatre Inn Family

We looked forward to this 3 night stay more than any other on our two week China trip. The descriptions do not match what is really on offer. Yes, the site is special and the Old Theatre itself an authentic example of traditional architecture, and yes the property is intimate (5 rooms), but the limitations are not noted in the advertising. The rooms are very small, with no place to put anything away, so one is hefting bags onto and off the bed, unable to unpack. There's a sign next to the toilet instructing all guests not to put ANY paper into the toilet, but rather to put it in a covered sanitized can, which, it is promised, will be removed daily. On our 2nd day, the can had not been removed, nor the room attended to. Regulating the shower was a daunting experience - going quickly from freezing to scalding. The food at dinner was mediocre at best, though the breakfast was OK. And while the Old Theatre Inn is inexpensive, it did not seem good value. On the plus side, the other guests tend to be interesting people and the walks in the area give one a good insight into rural life.…

Response from UndertheMoon, Manager at Old Theatre Inn

Dear Friends, We have noted your experience above and want you to know we are committed to improving. While our rooms are small (size and photos are all clearly noted on our website), all of our rooms have foldable suitcase stands, and the beds are elevated for storage underneath. As with all old plumbing in Asia, we have a covered bin for toilet paper which we do sanitize daily, so if for some reason we had not been able to go into your room if you were there during the day when our housekeepers clean, we have to wait a day. We're sorry if this was an inconvenience for you. It's our practice that if guests put a lot of their personal effects on the bed, we do not want to move them so we leave the bed as is, though we do clean the rest of the room, refresh towels, etc. There are many hooks and a hanger bar for clothes to be hung up. We are planning to expand our rooms to include a changing area, but as we are a registered historic property, it has taken us some time to be able to get this approval. Thank you again for helping us improve! Sam, Jessica and Old Theatre Inn family

If you don't want a cookie cutter guesthouse experience then Old Theatre Inn is for you. The heritage building is beautiful and the views out over the countryside are breathtaking - especially good while sipping a glass of wine on the terrace! Little touches like the wine list and the environmentally conscious approach (no plastic water bottles in the room, for example) really make the experience.

We already love Yangshou Mountain Retreat and the sister Hotel in Shaxi is also great. Amazing building simple but comfortable rooms, great local food, lovely staff and if you ask the local band will perform on stage. Been in China 15 years and combined with temple visit and the local Friday market one of our best experiences here.
