What could be better than a fortnight of sun and warmth in the French West Indies when the weather at home in NW Europe is almost at its wintry worst ? Three of us (my partner and one of our good friends) recently spent two great weeks in Guadaloupe - new territory for each of us. This island is really two islands joined by a narrow mangrove swamp and our first decision was to spend our time in the western half which has the misleading name of Basse Terre; I say misleading as it is quite mountainous. For a short visit to Guadaloupe, a car is a necessity and our second decision was to stay on the west coast of Basse Terre for the two weeks of our holiday. Happily, I came across a reference to the gites owned by Victoria and Yves Lansigu who are based in Bouillante. In fact they have two groups of gites, one at Bouillante and the other a few minutes drive north at Pointe Noir. Our first week was spent at Pointe Noir and the remainder of our holiday was at their second site, happily named Les Jardins de l'Espérance. The four individual gites at Bouillante are on a hillside, surrounded by lush forest with a small but neat swimming pool on site. Our two-bedroom bungalow had a nice balcony with a kitchen and sitting/dining area; each bedroom had an en-suite bathroom and each was equipped with air-conditioning. The beds were comfortable and their was ample storage in cupboards and chest of drawer units. While we mostly ate in local restaurants and cafes, the kitchen had all the equipment that any visitor might reasonably require. The comfort we found in these gites contributed in no small way to our overall experience in Guadaloupe. Having that first cup of coffee each morning on the balcony while watching humming birds flitting around was just one of the many pleasures of Les Jardins de l'Espérance; the fact that the cost was very reasonable was also a another significant plus. I cannot recommend them too highly !…
We spent some days at Victoria's place near Bouillante. The apartments have a great outdoor kitchen and sitting area, beautiful garden with lots of tropical plants and flowers and a swimming pool. The drive down to the beach at Malendure is fantastic. A great place to chill out. Definitely recommend this place to land on earth after a busy time.
