This review needs to be read in conjunction with my previous review of nearly two years ago. The Sharrow's new proprietors have done well to retain many of its endearing features of yesteryear while bringing it into the 21st century. The restaurant may have lost its Michelin star but the quality of catering remains excellent. Not many hotels exceed the...

Since visiting this area when our children were young we always promised that we would one day stay at this hotel. We stayed in the cottage suite what an amazing place I loved the cozy feel of the rooms packed with antique furniture and crockery the bedroom had a beautiful king sized bed. The bathroom was really modern and extra...

Surely the best location in the Lake district, the hotel itself is beautifully presented and like walking back in time. We'd booked for lunch but were considering staying at a later date and asked to see a room. We were shown one of the rooms upstairs overlooking the lake and were both extremely impressed at the high standard of the...

We stayed in the Cottage Suite overlooking the lake and the view is certainly spectacular, particularly in the morning with the mist hanging over the lake and the snow capped peaks in the distance. There is no bar as such and no draft beers but drinks are served in a lake view room again with a splendid vista. The cooking...

Having lived in the area for several years, an afternoon tea gift gave us the excuse for a few nights away. Bear in mind I booked the November /not Saturday (£135 B and B package) which I knew included the lowest tier room. We booked dinner one night and afternoon tea the next. Bad first: -Whilst not unexpected, the room...

We were fortunate enough to be given a gift voucher for afternoon tea at the Sharrow Bay hotel. I opted for lunch and wasn't disappointed. The new menu for Autumn was superb and the food was presented beautifully and tasted mouth-wateringly good. The loin of pork was cooked to perfection and served on a bed of rosti potatoes with a...

Tremendous views of the lake and mountains makes a beautiful backdrop for a lovely experience. Wonderful food and great wine list, very helpful sommelier makes choosing such fun. Beautiful room with pleasant areas to relax and gaze out at the marvelous views. Lovely location for walking. Thoroughly enjoyable and felt completely at home.

Let's get the bad bits out of the way first. I really don't mind paying for good quality, well presented food where clearly a lot of thought and care has gone into its creation. What I do object to, however, are borderline rip off prices for simple drinks. Unfortunately this was the case here; a glass of lime and soda...

Oliver S, Manager at Sharrow Bay Country House Hotel, responded to this review

Dear Ian B, We’re happy to hear you did enjoy our Sharrow Through the Ages lunch. It offers more choice than the average fine dining lunchtime menu, and particularly at that price; with as you say, all the home-made bread you could wish. Your coffee for two, in a double cafetière, should have been accompanied by four Petit Fours each,...

We wanted to visit Sharrow Bay for afternoon tea but upon calling to book our reservation and asking if there was a dress code, we got told 'no jeans' As my husband and I had come on a laid back holiday, we hadn't packed for a fancy afternoon tea so had to cancel our reservation. We still wanted to go...

I last visited this hotel over 12 years ago, and what a different experience. The warmth and open welcome that was once the trademark of this grand dame of hotels has sadly gone. No sherry in the room, many of the beautiful antiques are no longer there, the wow of the tasting menu was not to be found. The staff...

Dear Squiffy1973, we are sorry to hear you feel disappointed upon your return visit - things have indeed changed in 12 years following several changes in management. The collections you comment upon were inherited by a previous manager and it was his choice to dispose of or keep as he wished. We still have many lovely original pieces which we...
