Awesome historical building (a converted hospital) with lots of character. Jan who owns the place was awesome and took the time to make us feel at home as well as giving us great advice about the local attractions. The bunk beds were a bit squeaky which was a shame but overall the character of this place and the fantastic service...

If you want cheap, simple and a awesome location for the Caitlins this is it. Awesome place to wander and explore, you get a sense of the history of the buildings and imagine the ghosts within when this was once a hospital and old folks home. Loved the quirky little lounges and rooms.

Quirky old building with great dining area, large kitchen. We stayed on a powered pitch but there is a wide variety of accommodation in this YHA which used to be a hospital. Really friendly helpful owners. Great wifi compared with all the other campgrounds we stayed at in Riverton, Invercargill, and Catlins

We are single mums with children, wanted to try out camping the kiwi style.... only to find that we didn't bring enough tents. The staff was friendly. He got us another tent - mega huge one that can contain all 7 of us, he even set the tent up for us. The staff made sure we were okay living in...

We stayed here as it was the only place with rooms available in the area that we wanted so we were pleasantly surprised. Yes, it's basic as you'd expect from an ex youth hostel. However, the room was comfortable and had an ensuite. The communal kitchen and lounge were useful. Wifi didn't work in our room but was OK in...

Stayed in the Old nurses home part. Own ensuite in room, comfy bed. Shared a kitchen - plenty of room and we had a shared long great way to meet other fellow travellers.Loved the history of this old hospital and the friendliness of the operators. So appreciated this place being kept alive. Even the old boiler gets stocked with coal...

Stayed here in single room, which had own washbasin & bedside cabinet, which was great. (No clothes hook though - puzzling as it'd be simple to put them on the door). As it's an ex-hospital it is large and rambling with extensive grounds - would be ideal for a large group (camping available too). Free wi fi. Rather shabby but...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Thomas Catlin's. We were thrilled with our apartment, the old matron's flat. It was on its own on the top floor with a little balcony. Although a bit rough and ready in places, it was huge and full of character. We felt that we were staying on a movie set! The hosts were welcoming...

This is a backpackers in an old converted hospital. Quirky but sort of depressing. Small room with ensuite & shared cooking facilities. Boring small town. They charge too much for what they offer. Comfy bed though. I would look elsewhere if anything available before going with this place.

Hi Mizy Thank you for your comments. Yes, we are a former hospital and very hard to disguise this! The rooms are quite small as they were originally the nurses rooms. But the bathrooms are quite large as they are one half of a former nurses room. Most now have a flat screen television. We are also a camping ground...

If you're looking for comfortable accommodation that has character and a host who is friendly and appreciates humour, you've found your spot. The building is a gem - a hospital originally that has undergone a number of iterations. It's homely and oozing character. Love the way its history is on show from the stunning wooden floors to the separate dining...

Hi there Thanks so much for your lovely review. We loved the comments about the host and his "thing" for orange. You hit this one on the head!!! We are continually trying to upgrade and maintain our building but we will never disguise its history. Nor do we want to. Look forward to seeing you again! Cheers JAN
