We booked in Borgo Pianello at first for winter holiday and we could not resist to book a stay again in July. We appreciated not only the beautiful surroundings but also the great cordiality and hospitality from our hosts. The apartments are nicely fitted out and provided us with everything we needed. Ground floor rooms are probably more comfortable in summer time to enjoy outside meals. Otherwise there are tables that can be used outside in the garden and around the swimming pool. Thank you for allowing us to have a fantastic summer break!

I’m a 40 years experienced globe trotter, I travelled for more than 7millions miles and I visited more than 80 different countries,... I can guarantee to anybody that Borgo Pianello is a very Top Country Relais: this family is a very Great Host. Zero Km. Premium Food and Beverage together with Family Recipes are top ingredients for their not replicable Know How Home Made in the Territory of Bologna città Metropolitana. My son and I spent a week here in late August and it’s safe to say we have had one of the best holidays. The place itself - apartments and a house set in a rambling old Borgo with a stunning backdrop of lush green mountains is absolutely beautiful. Our apartment was modern, with a small kitchen, new bathroom and a large bedroom. We had our own little terrace overlooking the pool at the back where we had dinner and breakfast. The place is self catering and there is no restaurant on site. Rather Stephanie and Marco do event evenings weather permitting. We attended the All You Can Eat Pasta Eve - a fantastic social event where we dined outside under the garden lights at a large table with locals, family and friends. Marco, Stephanie and their daughter Agatha are the perfect hosts. We also did the cooking course and had a great time learning how to make authentic Italian Pizza and Tiramisu. Stephanie was kind enough to experiment with gluten free dough for me which turned out brilliantly. We really had the best day doing this and made new friends along the way. The pool at the back is beautifully set and we spent a couple of days there quite happily soaking up the scenery and sunshine. The local town Lizzano in Belvedere has two mini markets ( they close at lunchtime and don’t reopen until 16.30) a couple of restaurants and bars. Fanano is also worth a visit - a lively market town a 15 minute drive away with more shops and choice than in Lizzano. Thank you Stephanie & Marco; we will definitely be back!

I was impressed by the beauty of the place and the splendour of the view. In the middle of mountain you have every detail set for a great stay. Cuisine was exquisite, very clean and well organised rooms and apartments, a generous backyard full of firefly on night and that green gras that gives you the peace needed and the calmness desired. Hosts were amazing also, very friendly and always keeping on mind the client needs, well organised and great planners :) We will come back soon.

We we are just back from such a wonderful week at the Borgo Pianello. We did the cookery classes which were Monday/Tues/ Wednesday,. We then visited local restaurants on the other nights. This is a very special place. Stefanie and Marco are wonderful hosts. The accommodation is fabulous - such comfort - the best we have stayed in Italy and we have been to Italy many times. The swimming pool with the background view is just breathtaking - if you are thinking of booking this venue, don;t think twice - do it - you will not regret it. We were a family of three - my husband and 13 year old son. We could not find a fault! What a truly special experience. Thank you Stefanie and Marco.

I took a one week holiday in Borgo Pianello in mid September 2014. I went alone and booked the Bilo Apartment which overlooked the swimming pool. The location on Borgo Pianello is deep in the hills with local towns a 10minute drive away. The location is simply stunning and breathtaking! There is a ski resort locally & I can only imagine that the property in the winter snow. It was like going to your dream house, the owners have clearly put a lot of time, work & money into this cluster of properties. There are lots of lovely restaurants in the area including "Trattoria picchioni" in the town of Lizzano and an amazing Pizza restaurant not for from Lizanno. The local town Fanano held a local farmer-type market in the heart of the town on Sundays where you could buy local fruit/veg, cheeses, meats etc. the local shops, cafes & bakeries were very friendly. Borgo is very much a place where you switch off & relax & watch the world go by, no need to rush around. The cookery course was a must. The hosts/owners at Borgo are Stefania & Marco who are lovely. Stefania is chef and takes the cookery course. On the course we learnt how to make 2 types of Italian soups, stuffed zucchini & tomatoes, pesto, aubergines with mozzarella, pizzas, garlic focaccia bread, cantuccini, tiramisu, several types of sauces to go with pasta. Stefania's partner Marco is a wine expert & you can buy local & Borgo wines at the house along with prosecco, limoncello, others Italian alcohol along with local olive oil & balsamic vinegar, he also chooses the wines to have with the food you've cooked & gives a little history with which drinks go with different foods. Both Stefania & Marco are very friendly and knowledgeable and are on hand if anything is required at the accommodation. There was also a warm welcome & Marco gave each apartment a free bottle of wine on arrival which was a lovely touch. I thoroughly enjoyed this holiday & I would definitely recommend to anyone and is well worth the money.

We visited the cookingclass and were here for a week with a group of 19 persons. As leader of this group and having seen all kinds of places I can strongly recommand this one. Enjoy the fantastic scenery, the warm Italian hospitality and the great food and wines. So nice to be away from the busy life and relax at this beautifull place and nice people.

We stayed at the Borgo in August, with our daughter and friends with their children. We loved it. The Borgo has been restored in 2006 and turned into 7 nice modern apartments. All have a nice bathroom and a smaller or larger kitchen, fully equipped and some apartments have a dishwasher too. It's located on a slope. At the back there is a swimming pool (unheated, which is nice when it's 30+ degrees) overlooking the valley. The Borgo has wines from their own and other wineries, jams, liquers, etc. and you can get nice espresso, cappuccino or Italian aperitif. It's close to several villages where you can get you groceries or find restaurants, pizzeria's and trattoria's. It lies between Bologna, where you can go to by train (10 euro return ticket from Porretta Terme), and Florence. There are excellent opportunities for hiking in the area and the nights are truly quiet. The Borgo has many places outside to sit and barbecue. You can even do your laundry. The owner, Marco, is very helpful. A perfect place for a nature loving people.

Location was easy to find thanks to our GPS, it was easier since it was not totally dark by the time we arrived. Area is magnificent, surrounded by mountains, hills etc. The apartments were nicely decorated and converted. We stayed in apartment number 4, facing the parking area. All area is quite. Since the weather temperature by night was still low, we had the facility to warm up the apartment by using wood burning fireplace. Unfortunately we weren't lucky enough to use the pool located in this unique area, but we were able to spend sometime by the pool. Location: The apartment is cut-off from the main town and therefore to go to the nearest COOP supermarket meant to drive some 8Km in narrow roads and hills and another 5Km in more decent faster roads. The only drawback is that in these roads it means a 30min drive approx. WIFI & TV: Wifi was bit problematic to connect with at times and slow, TV only had a couple of Italian stations. When it gets pitch black there's nothing much that one can really do in the area. The option is to spend evenings in cities. Verdict: Recommended.

If this very positive review seems too good to be true, I suggest that you look at my other very reviews on Trip Advisor to see that my wife and I require a high standard to be satisfied. My wife and I spent 6 wonderful days at Borgo Pianello. We wanted a peaceful break away from all stress of everyday life. The holiday region and location was to be a complete surprise to my wife. The internet site of Borgo Pianello was very professionally done and raised my expectations to a maximum level - even though the presentation did seem like a bit of an "over-sell". Upon our arrival late at night, my first impression was that the apartment was smaller than the internet presentation indicated. However, my wife immediately was very favourably impressed. After a good night’s sleep (on the double bed with firm mattresses suiting our taste) and seeing everything in broad daylight, I was also more than happy with our choice. This view was confirmed time and time again during our stay and our dealings with the owners. To us the major positive aspects were the following: > Creativity, careful planning and wonderful taste in renovating, extending and furnishing old buildings to a very modern standard without sacrificing the historical beautiful simplicity of the original architecture. I was pleasantly surprised to find modern windows with double glazing as one knows it in Germany from where we come. The accommodation successfully incorporated modern and antique decorations and furniture. > Peaceful and beautiful surroundings. Although the apartments are quite close to a regional road, its location is such that one hardly notices the road or occasional traffic. > Our apartment possibly was one of the larger units and was fully equipped with everything that one would normally need for a self-catering holiday - a dishwasher might have been useful to families planning to prepare most meals themselves. > Upon arrival the apartment was clean and tidy and everything was in good working order. > More than adequate storage and hanging space available in the cupboards. > The quoted price for the accommodation was completely fair and there were no hidden costs at all. What impressed us was that even firewood for a grill (and fireplace!) was included, no additional charge for electricity, cleaning upon departure or tourist taxes charged, all bedding, towels and even drying cloths for dishes were provided. The same applies to liquid soap in the bathroom, a roll of toilet paper and various small and pleasant surprises. > The owners were very helpful in all respects. The co-owner and wife, was particularly charming and spent much time giving us personal tips on where to buy cheese, meat, fruit and which restaurants are particularly good. Recommendations on hikes and day trips were excellent. All their tips proved to be fully unbiased and correct. > Although some other guests found the pool small, we found its size, design, standard and particularly its cleanliness superb and perfectly suited for the purpose of cooling down and swimming a few lengths. Admittedly during our stay there were only 4 other couples staying there (without bigger children), meaning that everything was more than adequate for the guests. > Whenever we mentioned something to the owners needing attention (eg. shower outlet in working order but having a slight smell) it was attended to without delay. > We needed to do some ironing and was offered the use of their steam iron in their laundry (without any charge). > We made a few suggestions on smaller improvements that might be made in future, which were well received by the owners. For us this was a wonderful short break that will remain in our memories for years to come and we can wholeheartedly recommend this accommodation to persons looking for peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings and in accommodation that is personal and charming.
