We stayed in the Javelin room and it had a lovely. comfy bed and the building is super-quirky. I would have given it 5 stars had our bathroom shower been cleaned before we checked in and if the promised dog bowls, dog bed etc promised for the £15 extra charge been delivered. But other than the not very clean bathroom and lack of dog provisions, a very good stay and we would stay again.

Response from Joe Simkins, Owner at The Red Lion
Responded 21 Mar 2023
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are really pleased you had a pleasant nights sleep and enjoyed the quirky parts of the hotel, The Red Lion certainly does have its quirks due to the age of the building and is really loved by all who stay here. We are sorry to hear about the bathroom, this isn't our usual standard and the relevant training has now been put into place to ensure this doesn't happen again. The £15 per room dog charge is for the deep cleaning of the room upon check-out. The dog blankets, bowels etc are complimentary and subject to availability as we only have a limited stock in place. If you do decide to come and stay with us again, please book with me directly at joe.simkins@newdawnpubs.co.uk and I can ensure these things are in place for you when you arrive. Kindest regards, The Red Lion

Two rooms were booked for a 50th birthday surprise for a one night stay & evening dinner. We arrived to check in and be shown our room. The room was not clean. Dirty inside out dressing gown behind the en-suite door, stains on the bedside cabinet, stains on the dressing table, dirty saucer and a carpet that obviously was not hoovered. Our family members arrived after ourselves to be shown their room. Their experience was hairs on the dressing table chair, a dirty toilet etc., We duly informed the management who advised they would clean both our rooms but a decision was rapidly made to leave. This is not what you would expect to find at a room rate of £150 per night! Apologies were given, they did try to put it right however not good enough for us, so we left for a far superior venue elsewhere. All very disappointing not what one would expect to experience especially for a birthday surprise stay!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, I'm really sorry to hear you were dissatisfied with your room, this isn't our usual standard as we have many happy customers previously. I have fully investigated this and have put the relevant training into place to insure this will not happen again. If you would like to discuss this matter further please email personally at joe.simkins@newdawnpubs.co.uk Kindest Regards, The Red Lion

From the moment we arrived everyone was so nice, friendly and helpful. The service, food and drink was excellent. All the staff were just brilliant, nothing was a problem and if there were any queries everything was tried to rectify the situation. A slight cause for concern was the heating. The radiator was off in our room presumably because it gets very hot but it would have been nice to be able to open the window - condensation, airflow etc. All in all a great find. A very well run pub and we hope you have continued success, if we are ever back in the area we will be visiting!

This is a great find, and a perfect place for us to stay when visiting family & friends in the area. Lovely friendly welcome, great food options available, and to top it all lovely well appointed rooms. Really comfortable bed and good shower pressure too. Breakfast downstairs in the morning was a lovely continental option with fresh pastries, toast, Preserves, juices, fruit & yoghurt. The coffee was EXCELLENT! Parking on the street opposite is usually available and is free between certain hours - just check the displays. We will definitely stay again! - Thanks for another lovely stay!

Stayed two nights here and overall this was a pleasant stay in a lovely village. Staff were excellent and the food very good. There seemed to be a problem with the breakfast on the Saturday and a slight mis understanding with the room on the first night. However, this did not detract fr9m the stay and would have no hesitation in recommending this Pub/Hotel. Have to say raised my two queries on the Sunday with the two managers who were there and they were so polite and dealt with the matter in a most professional way. Thank you for your time and care you gave me much appreciated.

A really poor and disappointing family lunch. Tough steak, various menu items incorrect. Children ordered chicken burgers but staff later explained had run out of chicken, only for the next table to be served chicken 10 mins later. Banquet seats were filthy at 12.15 - obviously hadn’t been cleaned. Staff offered free round of drinks for trouble but otherwise very defensive. Life’s too short for lunches like this. Shame as decor was nice.
