Fantastic choice of accommodations for people diving with DiveCarib. Rooms are right next door to dive shop. Emma was great in booking our reservation and also checking in thru the week. Room was basic but perfectly suited our needs for the week. Location was great as well. Would definitely recommend and stay again if we visit Antigua. Island Fusion restaurant is onsite and wonderful for breakfast and lunch as well.

I was in Antigua for the Caribbean Sailing Association's annual meeting. I needed a nice place to stay near the meeting. Elizabeth's place was just right. I got one of the apartments, the Omega Apartment. My room, (they are all different) had a nice double bed with a bunk bed along the opposite wall. There was a perfectly good galley kitchen as part of the room, with a hot plate, electric kettle, nuke box and fridge with a nice stainless steel sink. Everything was clean, the bed was comfortable, the AC worked very well (wind was light while there so good to have it in the evening). WIFI was at least as good as at home. At the conference several people said the wifi in their twice as expensive rooms did not work. I would say it is at least as fast as at home on St. Croix. I only stayed 3 nights so can not comment on the maid service but I would be astonished if it was not just fine. As mentioned the water pressure is a bit hit or miss but who cares. My wife and I have lived in the Caribbean since 1997 and love places like this. Think about it, you are right on the water in Falmouth Harbour, a 5 minute walk to the Antigua Yacht Club, a 10 minute walk to English Harbour, there are boats available to use on site, what more do you want? Elizabeth made boats available for us to sail on the last day of the Conference n an impromptu race. I DFL'd but that was my fault. Had a great time. I believe if you stay here you can use the boats as part of your room rent. Told my wife this is where we are staying the next time we come to Antigua, and after my description she whole heartedly agreed. Of course, she also agreed to a 3 month sailing honeymoon on a 26 footer so her judgment is already suspect..... Anyway, I wholeheartedly endorse The Lodge.

I stayed here for 10 nights for $90 a night. I was told there would be wifi in the rooms but soon learnt that wifi was only available on the grounds outside my room. I was told there would be a maid service, after a week there was no maid so I asked when she was supposed to be coming and I was told Thursdays and Mondays. I should have had 3 visits therefore however I had one visit where my sheets were changed but I had to chase up the towels. I specifically asked whether there was a hair dryer in the rooms, I was told yes and then it took 4 days for me to be given one. The shower was very weak, often not running at all or only running boiling hot water. I think I had maybe 3 proper showers in 10 days. I again mentioned this and was told the government had turned off the water to later find out that they had let the cistern run dry. I made a point of going out twice in my towel covered in soap, I was never apologised to or spoken to kindly..... I then said that I would have to go and shower with bottled water and the reply was "yes you do that"... Again no apology. I asked for a discount at the end and after initially refusing I was given £25 off the room as I couldn't deal with arguing against someone who told me that I had to understand that this is Antigua. I would not have minded things going wrong but I felt constantly fobbed off and was never apologised to.

Response from Elizabeth J, Owner at The Lodge
Responded 3 Sept 2014
We are very sorry this guest had so many problems during her stay. She is quite justified in her complaint and we have taken every possible step to rectify the faults. We had recently taken over the property and there were undoubtedly problems with the water supply (we have now had a new cistern built to overcome this) as well as the internet which was inadequate. This has now been ‘hardwired’ and works in all areas. The maid employed at the time was totally unreliable and we now have a replacement. We, of course, offer our apologies to the guest and would be happy to offer a one week stay, free of charge, to compensate for the problems experienced.

On our extended Caribbean tour this was the only place, from which we got an informative mail in advance, the only one, which precharged us (50%) and the only one, where nobody was around, when we checked in (as everywhere we had given our flight arrival time and number). Luckily there was a customer there, who offered to make a call to the manager, who then gave me some information about the cottage, where we were staying. It was the only cottage anyway and with USD 140 per night quite a bit higher priced than the rooms in the Lodge itself (some without private bathroom).

On the compound is also the restaurant 'Island Fusion', which gets raving comments, but with an owner, whom we experienced during our stay as a very unfriendly person. The manager of 'The Lodge' we never saw until the end of our stay at a completely hidden office at the back of the restaurant. When I went to pay the lady asked me, what I wanted, not being aware that I had been staying with my wife at her only cottage for 3 nights. And when I asked for a taxi transfer to the airport I was told by her to get in touch with the lady from the restaurant.

The cottage, where we stayed, was big enough. It had a double-bed, a seating area, a kitchenette. The bathroom was quite good, with enough storage space and free toiletries. Some of the drawers were full of junk of previous owners and there were no extra blankets, when it got pretty cold on the last night. Room service we didn't expect and there was none.

Once I went for a swim in front of the compound, which is possible, but no place to hang around. For this one has to walk for half an hour to Pigeon Point Beach. After 3 days here we were happy to move to the far more expensive, but also far more enjoyable Copper and Lumber Store Inn in nearby Nelson's Dockyard.

I stayed here for the world sailing championships - it’s clean and super close to the harbour, even has its own dock. Sandra’s restaurants is fabulous, she accommodated our group so well! After almost three weeks we were very sad to say goodbye!

This is quite a difficult review to make, it depends what you are looking for accommodation wise.

The Lodge is part of the Antigua Sailing Academy and is well situated in Falmouth Harbour, it is a great place to go if you love your boats / yachts. It is about 10 minutes walk to the main centre of activities in English harbour where there are a number of decent bars / eating establishments. The harbour houses many very large and expensive yachts. Pigeon Beach (very beautiful and uncrowded) is around 25/30 minutes walk away which includes navigating a rather steep hill. The sailing academy does a splendid job of providing free tuition and activities for young disabled kids plus it is a good training centre for young and old alike.

I wasn't sure what to expect when selecting the lodge as my base for watching some cricket. All I required was a base, nothing too fancy and that's what I got. The accommodation is akin to a hostel experience, some rooms had en-suite showers others used the shared facility. My room to be frank looked a little tired, the walls were thin you could hear next door snoring / talking etc. there was a smell of damp in the kitchen / bathroom area, the sheets were changed once during my two week stay. There were a couple of cockroaches scuttling around the kitchen but I guess that is part and parcel of living in the Caribbean. The kitchen had a toaster, microwave and kettle. There were three friendly dogs on site but dogs do what dogs do i.e. leave mess so be careful where you tread. The air conditioning worked fine, the shower worked albeit rather weakly and the wifi worked well in (and nearby) the room.

Elizabeth is rather an eccentric lady, she clearly loves her sailing and I gather was very good at it in her time. Elizabeth (and her husband Peter) rent the whole facility (they live nearby) and sublet the bar / café. Any queries I had pre-booking were responded to efficiently. Elizabeth also has a car that can be rented on a daily basis for an EC$80 donation to the Sailing Academy. The car is suited to the pot-holed roads that abound throughout Antigua, it won't win awards for car of the year but it is functional. The café is run / managed by Sandra a lovely Jamaican lady who had been in Antigua for many years. The staff here are lovely and helpful, the café is clean and is a good place for the guests and many ex-pats to gather in the evening. I have to say the food here was excellent and great value. Curried goat was my favourite dish but every meal I had was authentic, well cooked and extremely good value. There is a bus service that runs past the Lodge, the number 17 runs regularly between St Johns and English Harbour. The drivers stop wherever and it is a great travel experience for EC$3.75 per journey.

So in essence the Lodge is a fine place to use as simply a no frills base with good food available. If you are looking for luxury accommodation then the Lodge will not be for you. If you have a love for all things boat then you will be heaven.

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Lodge (in the Cottage) for five nights and enjoyed it thoroughly! Elizabeth, who runs it, is hospitable and welcoming, and Karen at the Academy Cafe (on the grounds, steps from our home away from home) was a wonderful hostess and a treasure trove of advice on the area (and made sure that we did not miss sunset on Shirley Heights, which was, as she predicted, one of the highlights of our stay). She also made sure we ate plenty of delicious, fresh, healthy food! Elizabeth gave me a nice thorough tour when I arrived to show me where everything was, and in fact had already sent a very helpful written guide to the area by email as soon as I reserved the cottage, so I felt like I knew exactly what to expect and how to get around.

The property is located on the grounds of the National Sailing Academy, which gives sailing lessons to local kids, including disabled kids and kids who can't afford to pay for the lessons. Dive Caribe is also located on the property, as well as The Academy Cafe, which I mentioned above.

There are other accommodations besides our cottage on the property (in the Lodge building next door to the Cottage, there are two self-catering apartments and several other rooms). However, Elizabeth does not run the hotel for profit; instead, what she makes from taking in guests goes right back into giving kids sailing lessons - which made us feel really great as we watched happy children going back and forth getting their life jackets on every day. It's a warm and vibrant place, not at all like being isolated at a resort somewhere, which is exactly what we like. :)

The accommodations in the cottage, though not fancy, are very pleasant. Our studio/cottage had a queen-sized bed with a comfortable mattress; a small kitchenette area with fridge, two-burner hotplate, microwave, toaster, and electric kettle; a compact table with two chairs; and a couple of very comfortable armchairs to relax in. Brochures and maps with local information were also provided in the room for us, which was handy. There is a compact, tower-type oscillating fan, and an air-conditioning unit, which we usually turned on only for a few minutes just before we went to bed as the sea breezes kept us pretty comfortable. The bathroom, given the size of the cottage, is pretty spacious, and the shower was quite roomy. Windows have both light-blocking curtains for when you want complete privacy and bamboo roller shades for when you want some light and breezes coming through. Everything worked fine except that one roller shade was jammed on one side - but we just raised the other side when we wanted a bit more breeze. There was plenty of cupboard space in the kitchen for any food you wanted to store; the two nightstands by the bed, each with three large drawers, were great for clothes for our stay. There were hooks with hangers on them for anything you needed to hang up. Two generous-sized beach towels were provided for us. We also had a picnic table right outside our door, or we were welcome to sit outside at the Academy Cafe's outdoor tables, including one in a beautiful pavilion overlooking Falmouth Bay and the National Sailing Academy's dock. The wifi signal in the cottage, and outside, was fine. There is no television but I can't imagine why I would have wanted to sit inside and watch TV! The one thing we could have used in the cottage was a broom so that I could have swept out all the sand I kept managing to track in! but Elizabeth (or rather, her husband Peter) kindly lent me one from her home, which is also right on the grounds, so no worries. :) We were told that the tap water was meant to be fine, but because the pipes are old Elizabeth provides bottled water from water coolers for her guests to drink, available whenever you need it.

Swimming was available right off the dock, and Elizabeth made sure to tell me that we were welcome to use the Academy's kayaks, sailboats, or paddleboards - though we sadly did not have time to do this, so I am not sure if that was included in our rate or if there was an additional charge. Though my kids were not with me, I am a mom and it seemed to me that this would be a fantastic, fun place to stay with kids - casual and relaxed with swimming off the dock and watersports right there, lovely grounds to run around on, and plenty of things to do in easy walking distance.

Everyone on the property is very friendly and helpful, and it is such a good-spirited, relaxed atmosphere. The Dive Caribe dive shop guys, whose office is next door to the Cottage, are great too - I wish we had had time to have them put together a snorkeling expedition for us, but our visit was just too short. The Cafe hosted a private birthday party one evening (someone's 60th) - and as we were finishing up our dinner as they were getting started, they offered us pieces of birthday cake! (The party wound up by 10, as well, so no problem with late-night noise).

The location was, as I said in the heading, perfect! English Harbour is a compact town, and we were a five-minute walk from a small market on the town's edge, and perhaps a twenty-minute walk to Pigeon Beach just around the point, which is lovely, has two restaurants (one at each end of the beach) if you want a drink or a meal, and has tons of shade if like me you don't like grilling your sad, fish-belly-white northern self in the sun when you are out of the water.

On the way to the beach you pass through the town of English Harbour, which has lots of restaurants and bars - we mostly ate at Karen's wonderful Academy Cafe, though, as her food was fresh and delicious, her prices were unbeatable, and she herself was such good company that it was hard to be bothered to walk anywhere else! There were lots of options, though, including several local ladies who cook out of the fronts of their houses on the weekend - everything looked and smelled delicious.

We also enjoyed spending some time looking around Nelson's Dockyard, which is a national park with lots of interesting historical buildings (several housing hotels now), a small museum, and some extremely gorgeous yachts. We were preparing to pay the entry fee and the man asked us where we were staying - when we told him, he waved us through without taking the fee, so I think that if you are staying in the town of English Harbour you are allowed in? or, perhaps, the gentleman was just being hospitable and kind, like so many of the people we encountered in Antigua.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in English Harbour and would highly recommend The Lodge. Elizabeth and Karen made us feel just a bit like family, and I hope we will have the chance to return someday. :)

Loved spending a few days at the Lodge. I had a great room with a shared bathroom. The room was clean, quiet and very cool if i wanted it. Lovely grounds right on on Falmouth Harbour couldn't be beat.

If your are looking for a cheap resort, this is not it. This place is for those on a budget looking for good value and a country setting.

Looking forward to getting back to antigua and the lodge!

I have stayed at The Lodge twice, most recently for 3 nights. It's location is great, on the water at Falmouth Harbour & walking distance from plenty of bars & restaurants. The place is basic but clean with good a/c & excellent value for money. Being part of the Antigua Sailing Academy, it is helping to support Elizabeth's wonderful sailing programme.....that's reason enough to stay there!
