I stayed at El Encanto with a small group tour. The staff were absolutely wonderful and went out of their way to take good care of us, especially Lazaro. If you need staff who speaks English, this is a good spot for you. The location is not in the main tourist area, but it is just a few blocks from the Malecon, with one or two decent restaurants in walking distance. It's about $10 to take a cab from the Casa to either Ciudad Viejo or to Vedado, where most of the tourist activity is.

El Encanto is absolutely charming. It is well-restored and my room was very clean. There was a chemical smell in some rooms that bothered a couple of people in our group. I'm guessing it was pesticide, and after we visited a hotel in Vinales where I got bitten by mosquitos in my room, I was glad to return to El Encanto, where I didn't see a single bug!

There's a rooftop terrace, although the view was only of other nearby buildings. There's an elementary school across the street and next door. It was really fun to watch the students come outside for recess and phys ed class, when they played in the street.

The included breakfast buffet was adequate, with either scrambled eggs or pre-made omelets, fresh fruit, bread for toast, and a couple of plates of meats & cheeses.

As noted below, room 106 is very large and seemed more quiet than other rooms.

The rooms are very clean and the staff is professional and friendly. Free breakfast everyday. They also stock cold beer, water and sodas in the back room. The only negative, and it was a very big one, is that if you upgreade to a suite, like we did, the suites over look the street which is EXTREMELY NOISY from 7:00 am until about 2:00 am. As such if you are lucky you may get five hours of sleep.

This is my fourth time staying at this lovely bed and breakfast/hotel. You really fell you are staying in old colonial Havana. The rooms have all the amenities for a most enjoyable and relaxing stay. Hot, spacious showers and the rooms are spacious as well. The staff is very accommodating to every need and go out of their way to make sure you are happy. The area is very safe and walking distance to EVERYTHING. I definitely recommend this to families and the adventurous travelers. Will definitely be back soon. Love it!!!

We stayed at El Encanto with our Friendly Planet tour group for a week. The staff, especially Ray and Lazaro went out of their way to make us feel at home here. The room was spacious, clean and well maintained. Everyone there was friendly and very accommodating. The free breakfast was a great way to visit with other travelers before a busy day. Wifi was available in the morning and early evening. We were always greeted with a smile when we returned after our day's activities and Ray or Lazaro would help us with dinnner reservations or taxi arrangements, and even with food delivery when we were too tired to venture out for dinner. The rooftop terrace was a wonderful place to finish our day visiting with our fellow travelers! Thank you to all the folks at El Encanto for treating us like family.

Our tour group of 10 stayed here while we were in Havana. It is located in Centro Havana in an authentic Cuban neighborhood. The Malecon is a short walk away and you can see the water from the front of the building. It is rather large and resembles a hotel of a bygone era. The common areas are very nice as is the rooftop patio. Both are good places to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer. Our room was small and very clean. There was plenty of closet space, a fan and air conditioning, a safe and a hair dryer. The staff were great, accommodating, friendly and most helpful. Breakfast was also very good with fruit, tomatoes, juice, toast, ham, cheese, eggs cooked to order and coffee and tea. There are several nice restaurants within walking distance. We enjoyed watching the children at the primary school next door and across the street. The Cuban neighbors were pleasant and friendly.

This is the second time that I have had the pleasure to stay at El Canto.
This enamoring home from a former period of time captured my heart.
I am certain it is not just the exquisite building, but the beautiful staff that makes this house a home. I felt as if I was in my own dwelling.
The amazing women of the kitchen put out a beautiful fresh breakfast spread daily. Raysel and José welcome guests with their infectious smiles and outpouring of self. To see the absolutely gorgeous owner, Tamara present, over seeing the day today operations is a wonderful thing, knowing she has everyone’s best interest… by being present, you know you are going to have a good experience.
I have not stayed anywhere else in Havana. And when I come back, I see no other reason to go anywhere else but home at El Encanto.

I stayed here as part of the friendly planet tour. Ray and Jose were amazing hosts. They went out of their way to make sure all was AOK and were a pleasure to talk with. The cooking and maid staff were friendly as well. The rooms were spacious and came with AC, and best Wi-Fi I had during my stay. They provided recos in the neighborhood and even walked us to a dinner one night. Highly recommend.

Friendly people that give you a truer Cuban experience than in a big business hotel. Some of the nicest people I've met in my travels. All in a beautiful building with a wonderful and diverse free breakfast. The rooms were nicely appointed and comfortable.

I came here in early December with a group run by Friendly Planet for their "Authentic Havana" tour. This is a renovated colonial-style home in central Havana. The architecture and decor are beautiful. There are two open-air atriums and an open bar area on the roof. There are ten or twelve individual suites, each with its own bathroom. There is WiFi available. The rooms are clean and well maintained. The ceilings and doors are very high with the doors going through an arch with stained glass at the top. There is TV with local Cuban channels. The continental breakfast includes toast, sausage, orange and pineapple juice, bananas, papayas, and guavas. Breakfast is eaten in a room on the first floor. There is a reception room where the front door is with rocking chairs and a piano. If you need to get in, just call them and they will open the door. The hostal is a short walking distance from the beach and the Malecon promenade. The staff is courteous and responsive to your needs. You can convert dollars to pesos for a 10% fee. The 10% fee is mandatory by the Cuban government and is not an hostal policy. Along with a key to the room, you are issued a key to the safe in your room where you can keep your passport and other valuables. You cannot drink the tap water and toilet paper cannot be flushed down the toilet--it must be put into a waste bin. This is Cuba so this is typical. You should drink bottled water. The rooms are cleaned daily. The room has a fan, an air conditioner, a bed, a sofa, a dresser, a refrigerator, and a couple of nightstands. We were there for four days and the power only went out for half an hour. This is Havana so sometimes the utilities are intermittent. Overall no complaints. Keep up the excellent work.

Spent a week in Cuba and stayed in two different places for lodging with a day trip in between. This place is a hostel and feels like a nice hostel. The price is decent and breakfast is included. But of the three places we stayed this was so transactional - money, keys, room, done. No welcome. No offer to help with dining or directions - in fact seemed annoyed when we asked. Cuba is such a warm place - this was not.

catherine j asked a question Dec 2019
are hairdryers provided?
Answer from bedling2nterrier
Alexandria, Virginia14 contributions41 helpful votes
Yes, there are hairdryers in the bathrooms. The plugs are different than the U.S. If you bring your own electrics, you will have to bring a type C (220 V, Europe-style) adapter. Best Buy had vending machines at the airport. I was able to get a power adapter for $30 that allowed me to charge my phone while I was there.

We prearranged a taxi from the airport via our agent who was arranging our trip after Havanna but the taxi had slight problem finding the hotel after dark. I would ask the hotel if they would organise a taxi to pick you up as they arranged for one to move us to the next location at a decent price. Remember you need to pick exchange your cash to local currency at the airport , there is often a queue leave at least 30 mins for this after you get out.
