My family of three recently made a return trip to the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana ( family resort) and their sister property Zilara (Adults Only) are located in the high end Cap Cana development about 15 min from Punta Cana Airport (PUJ). This was my first return since the grand opening back in Nov 2019. This property is Hyatt Category 6- 25,000 World of Hyatt (WOH) points for double occupancy. There is a maximum of 2 adults and 2 minor children per room. Each additional person would be 12,500 WOH Points. Room rates seem to be coming back to normal now around $600-$700 a night. Since the two properties are adjacent, Zilara and Ziva guests are allowed to use the facilities at each others property. The only restrictions being that childr are not allowed over at adults only Zilara. We visited last week of February 2021 and its important to note that this property has risen to #1 spot in the Punta Cana region according to Trip Advisor in just one year! Room - King Grand Master Suite atZiva Check in was conducted in the Club lounge and we paid upfront and was offered the special insurance for $30 per person (no charge for minors) for the entire stay. It meant that if we tested positive before we returned home, this insurance would cover room and board for us all at ZIVA for the forced 14 day quarantine. As a Hyatt Globalist, I was upgraded to one of the space available Grand Master suites which there are only 6 of these in the entire property. Please note that they are the farthest from the beach but in the main building and had a beach view. There were two bathrooms. There was a nice little nook area room for my little one to do her homework and sleep. We also loved the whirlpool and butler service that came with this suite. Housekeeping Due to COVID-19 precautions, many other Hyatts have reduced housekeeping to practically no service for 3 days. Ziva has taken the opposite approached and doubled down on room cleanliness. Housekeeping was here daily and even mopped the floor with special cleanser. In the evening, they call us to check if we need turndown service and another cleaning. I really liked that we had the option of turndown service, rather than the hotel use COVID-19 as a reason to reduce service. So we are very happy with the cleanliness overall of our room and the entire property. There was 100% mask compliance from the Hyatt staff as well as security carrying boxes of masks available to guests throughout the property. Overall, we felt very safe being there. The Kids club and Canapolis Waterpark Who knew that the Kids Club was the key to the success of Ziva parents everywhere? The complimentary Anok kids clubs that is run by Edward Cervantes’ entertainment team of Stephani, Katy and Hokenda are amazing. Parents are allowed to drop off their kids over 4 years old free of charge. All kids are expected to be masked during all the activities. I saw kids of all ages and my 8 year old daughter loved it and advised that she didn’t want to hang out with us because she made new friends. She couldn’t stop talking about the full size treehouse inside the club. In addition, Stephani was a wonderful day care provider as she safely led arts and crafts time, face painting, t-shirt making on the beach, pool time, and balloon making. They are open from 9am- 5pm. For older kids, there is a teen zone with Nintendo video games, foosball, billiards and air hockey in a separate room and both are adjacent to the water park Canapolis. My daughter loved coming to Kids club daily and felt safe as many activities were either in their shaded outdoor lawn, or at the beach and at the kiddie pool. Protip: Daily movie night by the excellent Stephanie and Katy run at the main lobby lawn from 7pm-9pm. So you could leave your kids for cinema and go to dinner at Zilara alone and be back to pick up your kids in time if needed. The Canapolis water park which is shared by Zilara and Ziva guests. The park is open 11am-5pm on weekdays, opens at 10am on weekend. My daughter had never been to anything like it at a resort. It has a Lazy River that is not very lazy; there are tons of waterfalls and water canons that will ensure you don’t stay dry. There are 4 slides side-by-side that can be enjoyed by kids or an entire family. We may have raced down together a few times. There are slides for all ages there. Once you reach the top platform there are life guards there at the top and bottom of all the slides to help determine which slide is best for a young rider. You have four choices of slide to take: hard vertical drop, medium and easy slides. One of the slides had an almost vertical drop and another is really long and incredibly fast. Our favorite was the father/daughter dual inner tube slide. You can go either alone or with a second rider down. Although the pools are not heated, the water temperature is not cold, rather refreshing. We spent a few hours everyday there and it definitely kept kids on this side of the property which made the Ziva pool generally free of rambunctious kids. This is a positive if you want to hang out and read a book at the Ziva pools, but be away from the music and light party scene at the Zilara property. Pool Scene: Since you could hang out at either property, Zilara is adults only and focus on singles and couples. Ziva is families oriented crowd and oddly enough, seniors as well. If Zilara is the European executive theme, then Ziva is going to your wealthy grandma’s house. I guess the seniors don’t mind the kids and more chill vibe compared to the Zilara property. The water is not heated but it isn’t cold while I was there. There are a couple 15 person hot tubs including a Club pool and Club jacuzzi. Globalists will be happy to know that the cabanas that rent for $99 a day will be complimentary for them based on availability. My very attentive butler, Junior gave me a local phone to reach him every day and made sure that I had Cabana #12 everyday I was there. Upcharge items: Some the extra items that require additional charges are the photo shoots, romantic beachside dining, spa packages, excursions, premium wines, and lobster add on. Club Guests and Globalist Perk Restaurants: Chinola (Ziva beach front Globalist and Club Lounge restaurant for Lunch) While all guests have access to Ziva’s beachside New American healthy spot, Chinola, for dinner, they also have access to the Mercado Buffett. But Club Guests/Globalists will also have access at Chinola for breakfast and lunch. This was one of the two Club level restaurants (other being Shutters on the Zilara side) that made quality made-to-order food. They featured healthy, keto , Paleo, gluten free cuisine that anyone that has special request would love. While the cuisine was tasty and healthy. It wasn’t for me. It was one of the weaker and less imaginative menus on the property . But after sharing the feedback with them about my desire to try something more authentic, they we able to bring some Dominican dishes that were extremely tasty, a bean soup that was unforgettable. To their credit, they were always willing to accommodate and make something that was made to order for us. Ultimately, we were there more than any other restaurant (next was Mercado Buffet) because my daughter is a very discerning eater. Our daughter loved their salmon and rice. It was a special request. We preferred it over the Mercado Buffet for breakfast or lunch. My suggestion would be to become a Hyatt Globalist ( only 30 nights in 2021). Lunch at Shutters Peruvian Club Restaurant (Zilara) is also available for all Ziva club guests 18 years and over, as it is only a 5-7 min walk over there. If you like these amenities like top shelf liquor and access to club lounge and restaurants, I would recommend you pay extra for this access for club lounge or be a Globalist. Shutters - Peruvian (Adults Club Restaurant for Lunch at Zilara and open to Ziva club lounge/Globalist ) This was the best lunch spot of the two properties but on the Zilara side. Peruvian ceviches and tiraditos were main stars here. Dishes were light, refreshing, and flavorful. The service here was great and very attentive. I want to bring this point. The restaurant servers were quick to bring us drinks and refills and attentive to all the things that we needed. I would say that this was indicative of everyone that we encountered here. Service was superb. Their Peruvian Sous Chef , Oskar Valle, who previously worked at high ended restaurants provided his signature dishes here. Their goal was to provide a high level restaurant quality meal that you would normally pay for outside the property. #Shutters #clubrestaurant #globalist Mercado (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner buffet) on the Ziva Side. This is the main restaurant that is open for all meals. It is a variety of dishes from Dominican Breakfast to Mexican chilaquiles. The quality of food is decent with made to order omelettes, pastries, fruits and juices. I personally like the cooked to order items here like fish and meat portion during the dinner side. The dining hall was not crowded and items were quite fresh. #mercadobuffet Tempest (Hibachi/Mongolian BBQ)Ziva I past by the Hibachi restaurant most nights because I am not a fan of the actual food. Tried it already Ziva Cancun and Ziva Los Cabos and it was always one note from my experience. They put the same teriyaki soy sauce on the rice, chicken, beef, and shrimp. But I tried it again anyway to give it a shot. The show was decent but it lacked the egg trick, the steaming volcano 🌋 or anything new. It’s unoriginal from my perspective as someone who has been to Benihana a few times. But it could be fun for the kids. Somehow this was cool in 2000, but the lack of fire makes it a skip for me. The management says that people request the hibachi show, but admits that it is one of the least popular restaurants here. They also have a Mongolian cooking dining section with regular tables, if you don’t want to sit with other guests at Hibachi table due to social distancing. Noodle and Thread ( Italian ) Ziva Dinner Only One of the best restaurants there and highly popular. Due to COVID they rotate different restaurants. This Noodles and Thread italian spot is probably the most popular here on the Ziva side. My wife loved their Caesar salad and the short rib is fall off the bone. I don’t think I ever skipped dessert and the tiramisu is 🔥. Highly recommended Noodles and Thread. No reservations allowed. It’s first come first served. Opened 6:30pm-10:00pm. Early dining is recommended. Busiest times is 8:30pm. Brando’s (French) Zilara dinner Only A nice high end restaurant that we visited. The French onion soup is served table side which is a nice touch. All the dishes were made very well. Another interesting item is they also serve items from the Journey’s Hindi menu here as well. Be aware that meal service took 1.5 to 2 hours so if you have your kids watching the evening cinema be aware to be at Brando’s for 7pm at the latest Journeys (Hindi) Zilara Dinner Only My wife were really excited to see unique offerings like an Hindi restaurant at this all inclusive resort. We really liked the intimacy of the rail car and was able to snag a table inside here for dinner at Journeys at Zilara. We ordered lamb appetizer, mutton curry and chicken tikka masala. The garlic naan was fantastic as well. Zilara continued commitment to the culinary arts and authenticity was evident by its fantastic cuisine which was lead by an Indian chef. We observed great recognition everywhere there was a birthday celebration for their diners. #journeys #hindi #indianfood Navigator (Seafood)- Ziva Dinner Only This is a great seafood restaurant and the only place to find lobster. Actually I wish this place was opened every night. We loved the seafood bisque, the lobster skewers and the calamari appetizers. The one thing to be aware of is the outdoor dining aspect as the wind off the beach picks up and can be loud and breezy from the air. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal here. They have a children menu here as well. Presto - Snack shop at the Ziva Pool area If you are wondering what is available poolside, they offer a burger and wood fired pizza cafe. Fresh and very good Neapolitan style pizza here. Great to order while having drinks at your cabana. #presto #pizza #burger #Ziva Extra special option- Beachside Dining If you want to end your vacation with a bang considering telling the concierge or your butler(Junior)to arrange a beachside dining. He arranged a photo shoot and special dinner in a gazebo on the beach. Both are extra charges. I swear that they must have listened to what we like in our time there. For this special mean, they brought fresh caprese salad, sushi for us, and they had a lobster tail based on what my I shared with one staffmember earlier that week. My daughter loved the salmon and rice per her request. But they had chicken fingers and other kid friendly items as well. Chef Oscar/ Juan and some the management Pedro, Marlen, Heidy and Perfecto Contreras walked us over there to our surprise as a final night goodbye. #extra #specialrequest Beach The water was warm. There are plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas here. Drink service from the Coconos There are four palapas available as well on the beach. The seaweed is evident. But they have a truck pick it up every morning. There are some seaweed right at the shore but if you choose to swim out to the turquoise water just a little you will see warm and clear waters. They have sail boats and kayak available to use as a guest amenities. Gym/ Fitness Center - The Refinery (it is shared between both properties) They have the most incredible state of the art hotel gym I have ever visited outside of Hyatt Chicago Athletic Association. We took one of the functional training circuit classes at 10:30am with Frendy, our intense personal trainer. We worked up a sweat that was as intense as the on property dining. Spinning Rooms , elliptical, heavy weight, new machines, CrossFit type space and kettlebells and wall balls. Actually it reminded me of an Equinox gym with private yoga room, spinning classes, and all the latest cardio equipment and threadmills. The classes are complimentary. No need to register just show up to class on the assigned schedule. It shows up on your TV screen 📺 in your room. Entertainment I have to admit that every night after dinner, I looked forward to the 9:30pm entertainment each night. There was such a great show every night. If it wasn’t a Magic Illusionist Show, then a Retro band, then 4 tenors Il Divo show, Karaoke Talent night, and lastly boy band/girl band night. I want to recognize Edward “Wow” Cervantes for booking great talent nightly. COVID testing Upon arrival, our butler help us set up an appointment for the return COVID test. Although, I’m more familiar with the PCR test, the rapid Antigen is fine for US. PCR may be required for Europe return passengers. antigen test was ready in a couple hours. I tested at 12:30pm. I had results for by 2pm same day. Airport accepted at AA checkin without any issue. Antigen was complimentary for hotel for hotels guests. We were there at least three nights. PCR test took 2 days to receive so need to test at least 3 days out from departure. Because the labs were in Santo Domingo to send to the labs for results. it is conducted in the ballroom next to the lobby. They have a team on site there to make an appointment with passport when you arrive. I showed up at 12:30pm the day before departure and had them by 2pm. They gave the results in an envelope The cost of the antigen rapid test was included with cost of our stay whether it is on award/point stay or cash stay. Staff: The staff here has been incredible and made sure to make our stay special but that was true everyday for all the other guests that I spoke to as well during our 5 day trip. I wanted to thank Junior, our butler, who always knew where to find us and answer all my calls. He gave me a local phone to use to call him anytime. The great leadership team definitely runs a tight ship that hired friendly staff. In fact, although I tipped the staff throughout my time here I never felt compelled or never felt it was expected. The staff did everything from the bottom of their heart. In fact you will see all the staff put their hand over their heart and bow as a sign of their appreciation for you being there. It was definitely heartfelt and even though they always had their masks on, I could tell the smile though the mask each time. Here are the notable staff members: Pedro Tomas- General Manager David Barreiro- Hotel Manager and F&B manager Heidy Mendoza- Room Manager was incredible Marlen Mena- The Resident Hotel manager Felix Perfecto- Asst F&B manager Jose Rivera- Brandos Elvin Santana Brando’s Chef Wilfredy, Chef Enoc- Chinola Andrea (Club lounge) Carlos ( our incredible Photographer) Julio Mercedes, Joel Sella (Asst F&B) Pedro De Jesus ( banquet manager) Overall impression: So should you book a night here? What most people think of Dominican Republic of the hustle and bustle is not found here at Cap Cana. Management understand that they attract the jet setters from LA, NYC and the rich and famous of Santo Domingo. They have been able to create a 5 star luxury experience at an All Inclusive. Service with a heart is not lip service here at the ultra exclusive Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana development. This is a new property just one year old and the staff and their dedication to top notch cuisine is evident. Once you come here you will see why I feel it is the best Ziva Property in the Hyatt network. #ziva #grandmastersuite #2bathrooms #tub #whirlpool #jacuzzi #balcony#noodlesandthread #italian #ziva
