We didn't know what to expect with this vacation, but few places have made us want to return as much as the Grand Lido! There was some new to the Marriott chain hiccups, but they are getting it together. What a great addition to the Marriott family! The Grand Lido is a small part of big Royalton resort, so it gives a more personal feel than the other Royalton areas. As a Grand Lido guest, you get access to ALL other areas of the Royalton, including restaurants and entertainment. Most of our days were spent with the wonderful staff and guests of the Grand Lido, and our nights were spent at the rest of the resort. Big shout out to our butlers Orane and Betina, they were on top of getting us everything we needed. Of course a shout out to our "entertainment" host Simone, lovingly known as VP (go ahead and ask her if you get the chance), always a big welcoming smile. She honestly made us want to come hang out at the pool with her and the other guests. The days really flew by. If you want solitude here, you can have it. If you want entertainment and good conversation, you can have that too! We loved it here, actually started planning our return before we even left!

We visited the original Grand Lido multiple times when it was part of SuperClubs and once after it was part of the Breezes. Our experiences at the original Grand Lido were fantastic. When the Royalton Complex was built we weren't sure what to expect from the new Grand Lido. We were pleasantly surprised. First, the staff was fantastic. Tianna - at the front desk for our stay - did a great job getting us oriented on arrival and coordinating our Covid test results for departure. Our butlers Ricardo and Condley were there when we needed them and also anticipated things before we asked. The pool bar was small but the atmosphere was great, We enjoyed chats with Chevia, our bartender, she also made excellent drinks - the plantation punch was a favorite. Simone, our social coordinator, lighted up the atmosphere and left us a couple of souvenirs for our vacation. Food at the pool grill was very good - the jerk chicken and beef were excellent. Grand Lido shares restaurant and entertainment facilities with the Royalton/Hideaway complex. The entire resort is beautiful and perfectly maintained. It appear all of the rooms have ocean views. The Lido area has sunset views of Booby cay (it was named that before Lido was there). We spent most of our short visit in the Grand Lido area. We did go to the Royalton/Hideaway areas for dinner. Service was excellent at all of the places we tried. Food at the buffet was good, very good at the Dorado, but we were disappointed with the food at Hunters - the steak house. The petite fillet was actually what we know as a petite sirloin and it was over seasoned for our palate. We were impressed with the Covid measures in place through out Jamaica. At the resort masks were required inside except at tables and hand sanitizers on entry to restaurants but the measures weren't onerous. The bottom line - How does it compare with the original Grand Lido? The new Grand Lido is smaller than the clothing optional beach area of the old Grand Lido so the space is more limited and you don't meet as many people. The rooms and views are better. The staff is just as welcoming and friendly - because it is smaller the interaction with the staff at the new Lido is even more personal. We plan to return - hopefully after Covid!

I apologize for being a month late with this review. We stayed the first week of December. This was our 2nd stay at Grand Lido and just as awesome as the first. Upon arrival, we were greeted with “Welcome Home,” and that is truly how we felt. We were back at home with family that we met two years earlier. Everyone at GLN was welcoming, friendly and wanting to make out stay memorable. We requested the swim out suite (9012) that we were in 2 years ago. There was a problem the first night but moved to our requested room the next day. Anna and the front desk people were awesome. Our butler, Orane, was there when we needed him and met every expectation. Ricardo was our butler two years ago and he remembered us and helped out as well. It was like seeing an old friend. Simone! Simone at the pool bar is an incredibly bubbly person who makes time spent there just incredible. From games, to trivia, to rock painting, she makes sure the party is just wild enough to be so much fun. (When you meet Simone, ask her what her nickname of “VP” means.) This is now a Marriott property so the Marriott rep on site arranged a Chef’s Table dinner for all Bonvoy members. It was a great time with some great people. We met so many wonderful guests and we had such a great time visiting in the pools and hot tub. The Spa is very nice and we had a couples massage that was wonderful. The hotel takes great precautions with Covid and made the required Covid test to fly home very easy. Finally, two observations from last time to this time. First, there was no offer of a bottle of top shelf liquor to be brought to our room to enjoy during the week. This happened last trip. You guys should reinstate this practice. Second, this time there was no hassling of guests to attend a time share presentation by virtually every employee. This was such a relief not having to worry about how to politely decline the offers. Thanks to everyone at GLN for going above and beyond our expectations.

The fitness team was amazing, specifically Jamol, who held a pool workout class everyday. There was a wide variety of aged people in the class. And Jamol made it incredibly fun and yet the workouts could be challenging just depending what you wanted to get out of it. Either way 10/10 would recommend doing it to get your body moving while on vacation.

DO NOT STAY! Overall poor hospitality, terrible management, and fails to meet the Marriott standard. Additional charges and fees (~$700), difficult management, and challenging use of offered services. On the positive side, physical rooms and property are nice. For those who want more detail: As someone who has stayed more than 1,000 nights at Marriott properties, I can confidently say these properties – both the Grand Lido and Hideway at the Royalton Negril – are poorly managed. My reservation was booked for two adults through the Marriott app for a five night stay. When we arrived at the Grand Lido check in, the representative stated the reservation was only for one person and the hotel required an additional $700 to add a second adult. After the agent spoke with the manager, Anna, it was confirmed that this is a common issue when guests book through the Marriott app. The representative apologized but stated there was nothing that could be done and I must pay the additional $700 or they would not check us in. We had just flown three hours to Jamaica and took an hour and a half taxi to the hotel. With no option, I paid the additional fee. When the representative gave me the room key, he expressed his apology that the room type I was guaranteed – a king bed – was no longer available so he had placed us in a double room. Frustrating. We were also sent written confirmation in advance of our stay for dinner at Calypso for our first night. However, after we checked in the agent apologized that they could no longer locate the reservation, though they read the written confirmation provided by staff on site, and the restaurant was fully booked for the night. The next morning I asked to speak with the manager when she was available to address the issues from check in. Anna met with me in the lobby. In our conversation, she reaffirmed the Marriott app booking issue, told me she has notified Marriott several times, and that nothing changes on the Marriott end. Nonetheless, there was nothing she was willing to do regarding the additional $700 charge the night before. As to our king room guaranteed with our reservation, she offered to downgrade – her word choice, not mine – to the Hideway with a king bed. She indicated the rooms were the same but the view, services, and on site amenities were not. She said we could accept the downgrade to have a king bed but, once again, would not refund any of the additional $700 charge or charge us the normal lower rate for Hideway rooms (versus the premium rate for the Grand Lido). In an effort to apologize for the challenges, Anna offered a free couples massage at the hotel spa and a complimentary dinner for two on the beach. We were told it would be the standard 50 minute massage for each of us. Yet, on arrival to the spa, we were informed it was a 25 minute complimentary massage but we could pay an upgrade fee for the standard 50 minute massage. We rejected the bait and switch. For the beach dinner, we later found out that Anna, as manager of Grand Lido and the Hideaway properties, had placed additional limitations on how and when we could enjoy the offer. This was frustrating when it came to scheduling the dinner but the meal itself was nice overall. In short, the rooms and property are modern and well appointed. Everything feels clean and updated. However, management acknowledged the issues were a result of the Marriott app and on site staff mistakes. Yet their solution was to downgrade our stay, charge an additional $700 fee, and make it very challenging to use the complimentary services they offered as an apology. I recognize the Royalton properties are new to the Marriott family. I am hopeful that in the near future, Bonvoy loyalty will be recognized and management improvements/training will enhance a stay to meet and exceed Marriott standards. Unfortunately, we were so disappointed that we will not be returning to any Royalton family property in the future.
