Well after 3 years of travel bans and no holiday plans we decided to spend Christmas in the Caribbean and there was only one place we had been thinking about. Couples Negril. It did not disappoint. We love this place and it was just what we needed. I read some of the reviews that say it’s a bit scruffy and old but that’s what we love about the place. Of course parts of the place could do with a bit of a spruce but here’s why we love it: Service - always fantastic and staff are lovely. They cannot do enough for you. They don’t expect tips as they are not really supposed to take them but we do. Food - smaller resort than the larger ones around so the food is good quality - if you want Michelin stars well maybe an all inclusive is not for you. Drinks and cocktails are high end and they will also mix in your style if you ask. Personally a Dirty Banana at 11.00 is not to be beaten! There is also a coffee bar now and we loved that. Cleanliness - Rooms are so clean and very comfortable - yes you may get swankier ones at the bigger resorts nearby but your sheets are regularly swapped and coming back off the beach or pool to a clean room with crisp sheets is beautiful. The bigger resorts may be newer but the gardens are not as established and we heard actually the service was poor. COVID wise we felt very safe. Temperature checks at breakfast and you are mainly outside with mask wearing protocols in place and sanitiser everywhere but it was not intrusive. Beach activities fab and the beach is very beautiful - the best in the area. They really went to town for Christmas and New Year was Bond themed. The staff work tirelessly which is why so many people go back to this place. Incidentally we will too. Thank you Couples Negril - you banished Covid Blues.

The employees go out of their way to make sure you have a perfect stay. Its just a wonderful, laid back place to stay. The food is the best ever. My boyriend went fishing one day and brought back what he caught. The main restaurant cooked his fish for us. The only thing they asked if we would give the extra fish to the employees to eat. Of course we said yes. You think living in such a beautiful place is easy, but i could see the struggle in their eyes. As it is very exspensive to live there. I saw quite a few people (mostly americans) treat them disrespectfully. Althogh they said there was no tipping allowed, we secretly did it anyway. We met some of the greatest people there. Talking about you Luigi!! There was a young lady there that worked at the restaurant that stole my heart. She would sit down with us when she had a few minutes to spare every day. So in closing, consider this place as your next vacation.

All reviews are a bit biased based on individual preferences. I will do my best to be unbiased in my review and provide some (hopefully) helpful information. We have travelled a lot to all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean (4 times to Jamaica) and tend to prefer adult-only resorts. I hope there are at least a couple of tidbits here that help future travelers to this resort. ROOM: We booked a beachfront room but when we arrived, we were 'upgraded' to a garden view suite'. It was a larger room but close to the road with traffic noise. Seeing/hearing the ocean is important to us so they accommodated our request for a room change on Day 2. New room was much smaller but very close to the beach. NOTE: you will not get a room facing the ocean with a full view - you will be close to the ocean but will have a side view from the balcony. There are in-room breakfast placards and bar fridge placards in the room - if you want anything for either, you fill it out and hang it outside your door. NOTE: if you select the alcohol, they bring a full bottle albeit not a premium brand. FOOD: We found the food to be fairly good. You do not go to a resort for Michelin star dining. The menu did change up mid-week so it didn't get stale at any restaurant. There is also one night that is lobster night at all restaurants. We are not buffet people but it was fine for breakfast, enough variety. Lunch options between the beach grill and veggie bar were OK - not a ton of options but the food was decent. We arrived later in the eve after the 2 hour drive from the airport but were able to have dinner at Haliconia no problem. We found the food at Lychee to be very good as well as at Otaheite - they would be our best experiences. A bit more hit and miss at Heliconia. You could get coffee/latte/etc at the coffee bar starting at 7:30am and late at night could get food beside Heliconia. The veggie bar was OK if you wanted a healthier option - note that the wraps etc are premade and a bit on the small side but you can always order more. The restaurant employees were good and were accommodating - we had a change to a res for Otaheite where we wanted to go earlier on the same night to sit with another couple - they were able to move us to a table for 4 at the earlier time which was great. BARS: There are basically 4 - one is the swim up bar in the pool, one in the Grill restaurant, one in the buffet restaurant, and one at the Piano Bar. In our opinion, the one at the Grill/Halicionia didn't offer much atmosphere and was more there to service the restaurant. The one at the buffet was OK. The Piano Bar didn't open until 10pm and the swim up was just that. For us, it would have been great if they had a true beach bar down on the sand to stop for a cocktail with a view of the ocean after a day at the beach; and a classy 'lobby bar' type set up to go for a nice cocktail before or after dinner would be nice. The bars here are average for atmosphere but the service is good and the drinks are good. BEACH: Beach as nice. Very clean, lots of chairs and floaties to be had. Yes, there were vendors wandering but they stayed by the water and, for the most part, if you simply said 'no thank you' they would say have a nice day and move on. You do get beach towels in your room and there is a towel table by the beach to sign out towels - they take your room number but didn't seem to be carefully managed. No shortage of towels. They give you a flag - if you want anything, you stick the flag in the ground and they will come over. POOL: The pool was well maintained. Swim up bar was great - sort of in its own pool which was nice. There is another small pool by the dive shop if you are looking for quiet. There are 3 hot tubs - one at either end of the pool (one didn't have jets working) but the gem is the one tucked into the trees beside the dive shop pool. It is bigger, more secluded, and quieter. ENTERTAINMENT: We loved the entertainment. If you are looking for the typical 'cheesy' shows (i.e. Michael Jackson show) you won't find that here. If you enjoy live music featuring a great house band and a live singer (or an entertaining steel drum band) then you will enjoy this. The entertainment is in Cassava Terrace (the buffet restaurant. It typically included just the house band from 8-9 (for those having dinner) then they stepped it up with a singer joining from 9-10 (the ones we saw were fantastic), then at 10 if you wanted to keep going, you could head up to the 'Piano Bar' where it alternated between singalong/karaoke/dance party on different nights, depending on your preference. One night there was a bonfire on the beach with a live performer as well - nice to mix it up. OTHER: - CATS: there are several cats around the resort - we would see the same couple in the buffet restaurant and a different few at the beach grill. They are all friendly and in good health. There is actually a protective structure on the resort for them and they all have ears clipped to show they are fixed/have shots. Apparently someone from a local shelter makes sure they are cared for. Be kind to the cats. - EMPLOYEES/SERVICE. All employees that we encountered were great - very friendly and helpful. Tipping didn't seem to matter too much, unlike other resorts. We did give tips a few times in appreciation. We did try to tip our bellman who took us to our room, but he wouldn't accept it. -COVID TESTING - we needed a PCR test to return to Canada - they took us by shuttle to the sister property for that. Allow about 90 minutes to get there, wait in line, get the test, & return. You get the results in 24-48 hours. TIP: verify the info they are submitting - when we got to the airport and showed our test results, it turns out they had made an error in by birthdate. They let us through but it did take a bit of time. - COVID PROTOCLS - generally fairly good. The employees all wear masks (although, like everywhere else, not all were covering mouth & nose). At breakfast, you were required to wear a mask to be seated and they took your temperature. That was not a requirement for lunch/dinner. The resort did what they could for COVID protocols, but not all the guests did and it wasn't really enforced (some guests acted like COVID didn't exist - no mask, no attempt at social distancing, etc.). Would have been good if they enforced the masks when in restaurants and if they took temperature at entry to all restaurants at any time of day not just breakfast. - INCLUDED EXCURSIONS: We did the catamaran trip - it was canceled due to wind/waves a couple of times but we did get out. You had to wear a mask to get on the boat but once on/seated, it wasn't really enforced. It wasn't over crowded so you could keep some distance. It was a great activity - go for a swim through a cave then watch the sunset on the way back. The trip the Negril Cliffs/Bar was not available due to COVID (you could book via the Tour desk for $15USD/person if you wanted to go to Rick's Cafe). We did the 'Trading Places' and took the shuttle for the day to Couples Swept Away. Was worth seeing the other resort but we went primarily to go for a walk on Seven Mile beach which was worth it. If you want to return to the resort early, it is $10 by taxi. - OFFICE OF NATURE: If you want to take a 20 minute walk down the beach (to where the blue tarps are), the first place you will see is Office of Nature. For $25USD you can select your own fresh lobster and they will grill it for your lunch. We would recommend. - DINNER ON THE BEACH: extra change of $200USD. We don't normally do these types of things but if you are looking for a splurge, it is nice. They arrive at your door to escort you to your dinner which was a nice touch. We had the lobster as our entree - so much food we couldn't eat it all. NOTE: they have 3 options - on the beach, in the treehouse, or in the gazebo - you will likely not get the treehouse as it gets booked months in advance. - COMMUNICATION: We had 2 small issues where lack of communication internally was an issue. We moved our beach dinner from 7:00 to 7:30 via the service desk 2 days ahead of time, but it didn't get passed on to the food/beverage team - our concierge showed up at our door at 7pm and we were not quite ready. Same happened with our Otaheite reservation - we changed the time via the service desk so that we could work around the entertainment planned but the info didn't get relayed to the restaurant and when we arrived, they told us were were scheduled for a different time. It all worked out but just an awareness. - CHRISTMAS: Couples Negril did a great job of Christmas - Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on the beach (albeit an hour later than they had said) and they had a steel drum band playing. Christmas Eve they had a cocktail party - wasn't well advertised/communicated ahead of time but was nice. Cookies in the room on Christmas and the buffet was moved outside around the pool on Christmas night. All in all, we enjoyed our time at Couples Negril. If you are used to the Secrets brand, Couples is not quite that but it is still very good and, in our opinion, a good option for adult-only all-inclusive in Negril. Swept Away looked nice too but much larger resort.

This was our first time in Jamaica but we have stayed in various all inclusive resorts in the past. I would say Couples Negril is just okay. We had a fabulous time (because who wouldn't on a tropical vacation!) but the resort experience was not what we anticipated given the price and also reviews. Rooms/Hotel- in need of updating. They were nothing special and were showing major wear and tear. The bathroom was especially disappointing. We don't spend much time in our room, but it would be nice if they were more upscale. We had also paid for an ocean view and that was a joke. You could NOT see the ocean from our room. Housekeeping was poor. We had to ask so many times for extra towels and washcloths...we took to just taking them from the cart. I felt that the entire place had a bit of a dirty feel in general, like it just wasn't kept up. Food- The food was overall very good. My issue is lack of variety. They only have four restaurants and one buffet. The buffet tended to serve the same things over and over again (especially for breakfast). Lunch also was fairly limited. The Otaheite restaurant was delicious. We ate there twice- every aspect of our meal was amazing. Bars- Good drinks, service was friendly. Beach- the beach was very nice. Enough chairs for everyone. No umbrellas, which was surprising. Beach service was VERY VERY slow. We mainly just went to the bar. I liked that the water is so calm and they give you rafts to hang out in the water. That was a big plus. They do have a nude beach section, that may be a downfall for some people but it didn't bother us. I have heard some beaches in Jamaica are very small, difficult to take runs/walks. This was not the case, I was able to run on the beach every morning. Activities- I loved all the water sport options. They were helpful in teaching you if you didn't know how to do certain things (hobie cat for example). We did a morning snorkeling trip and SCUBA was also an option, although we did not do that. They have a free catamaran tour which I would also recommend. This is a very, very small and low-key resort. I liked that it was such a short walk to the beach. I liked that it didn't play loud, obnoxious music. It was very laid back and felt casual and comfortable. Those aspects were very positive. We were there for new years and they did throw an amazing new years event. If I had never been to an all-inclusive resort before, I would have given this 4 stars. The 3 was for what I felt was lack-luster service, lack of food options, and an overall feeling that the place was not well kept up and run down. If you are looking for a wow factor, this is not your resort. However, there were a lot of people who appear to come here over and over and I can see why, there were lots of positives as well.

Dear onerunnermom, Thank you for choosing to stay with us. We were happy to learn there were many positive aspects to your visit but disappointed that certain areas did not exceed your expectations as they do for others. Please feel free to email abe@couples.com if you have any additional comments or would consider trying one of our other resorts. Kind regards, Abe Issa

Couples Negril is a very nice resort to relaxe, disconnect and recharged. The room was very nice too, and the housekeeper always had a new surprise (towel design) with flowers left on the bed. The room itself was clean they also had a drink form to complete every day if you want your fridge to be filled up (they never missed a day). We were at the resort for 10 days and the food was always good. Whenever we had a request or some thing that we need they were always there to fulfil our needs. If they would be one thing this resort should work on, it would be to clean the tables more often during the day around the pools and pick up the dirty dishes. Finally we spend most of our time at the beach which they kept very clean. Overall our experience at the couples Negril was very nice and we would definitely recommend it to our friends.
