We loved nearly everything about the Decanter Hotel! We booked one of the French Balcony Suites, which although it is was an internally facing room, it was so quiet with a private outdoor sitting area and adjacent to the hotel courtyard where we could listen to the sound of the courtyard fountain from the living room area. The suite was spacious, with a huge sitting area, full kitchen large bedroom and bathroom. The king size bed was so comfortable! We especially loved the rooftop deck which we pretty much had to ourselves since it is only open to the public on the weekends. It has a gorgeous view of the cathedral and city. We brought our bottle of wine and some tapas we bought at the local grocery story to the rooftop and had our own private happy hour overlooking San Juan at sunset! The location of this hotel was unbeatable, right up the street from the El Convento hotel, and less than 2 blocks to San Sebastian Street including the famous La Factoria. It is a short walk to so many restaurants, bars, shops and you can easily walk to the El Morro, the waterfront and really all over Old San Juan. All of the staff were so friendly and helpful with everything as well. We will look to stay at the Decanter again next time we visit San Juan!

The location was great, as you are across the street from the Cathedral. Easy to get around in Uber, walking distance to tons or bars and restaurants. Easy 5 min walk to catch the sunset over the water. Clean hotel with friendly helpful staff. Would definitely return.

Our stay at the Decanter was exceptional. What a beautiful historic hotel located in the heart of the old city! We arrived from the airport at night and went promptly to sleep, but upon waking and stepping out into the street in the morning was an amazing experience. You are in the middle of the old city, surrounded by narrow cobblestone streets, multi-colored buildings, across from a historic cathedral. Easy walking distance to El Morro National Historic site, great restaurants, cafes, and tiny plaza parks... Our room was comfortable, clean and cool (with good air conditioning)--- including a private courtyard sitting area. Apparently Decanter has a great rooftop bar and groundfloor restaurant, but they were closed mid-week.. Next time we stay for the weekend!

Stayed in the Chardonnay room with a french balcony. It met all our needs and has a perfect location for exploring Old San Juan. Staff was friendly and helpful and room was clean. We had a drink at the rooftop bar one night which was super convenient.

The Decanter is a small boutique with charm. The room we stayed in was a nice size but dimly lit. They had a nice rooftop bar and a restaurant on site. The staff was friendly and they made sure we had a nice time and was very attentive. The room could use some touch ups but would definitely stay again.

We only had one night in San Juan and wanted to spend it in the old town. Most of the hotels on Trip Advisor were large major brands basically catering to tourists off the cruise ships Then we found the Decanter, which was perfectly located within easy walking distance of the fort and other attractions, was a charmingly remodeled older building with only 20 rooms, most of them suites, and boasted a roof top bar and restaurant. It turned out to be as delightful as advertised. The roof top bar was lively and fun, with great views. The restaurant was excellent, it even carried one of our favorite California wines. Service was respectful, friendly and fun. Our first floor suite was large and comfortable, everything worked, including the AC. If there was a negative, and it is a small one. our room could have used more lighting. But that didn't stop us from having a great time and we would happily return and recommend to anyone wanting a small boutique hotel experience in San Juan.

Centrally located, on a relatively quiet (but not dead) street in Old San Juan. Most everything is walkible in OSJ, just keep in mind the heat, steep hills, and cobbled streets. We were 2 couples staying in Rooms 304 and 305. We were balcony neighbors which was fantastic. We loved being able to communicate from balconies. The rooms consisted of a bedroom, living room, bathroom (shower, no tub), and balcony. Great old world style with modern amenities. Elevator and I believe a generator should power go out. Room 304 was good except of the band-aid on the fire alarm (I assume to cover a disturbing light), opened water bottles, and the strange tape on the safe batteries. Room 305 had issues: poor to zero lighting in the bedroom, no way to reach the ceiling fan pulls and no remote for it, balcony lock did not work, and worse, the air conditioning did not work and left a puddle on the floor during the night. Having said that, maintenance was extremely quick to address these problems. They worked on them, but they weren't fixed by the time we left. We stayed 2 nights. The air conditioning line was frozen. They improved it for the second night, but it was still hot. Since the balcony didn't lock anyway, that door was kept open for a breeze. There is street noise which is to be expected, but nothing that kept us awake. It's a lively city at night. The hotel refunded the room $100 per night for the inconveniences. The first night we were there, OSJ had a water problem so the hotel told us they were turning the water off from 10pm to 6am and that the restaurant would be closed. It wasn't the hotel's fault. It was all of OSJ. Apparently it happens from time to time. We were told by locals that we were lucky the electricity was still on. The hotel did provide us with free water. Please don't use my issues as an excuse not to stay at the Decanter. All four of us actually LOVED staying there. It's Old San Juan; it's old. We would be thrilled to revisit the Decanter. It's in a great location, the staff were very attentive, and it was clean.
