We only booked 2 out of 4 nights of our stay here in Vieques, because we weren't sure if we could handle the lack of air conditioning. Turns out, it was not a problem at all! What was amazing is how much we completely unwound in just those 2 nights. Usually it takes a week to settle into vacation and forget about worries, but after our 2 nights here, it felt like we had been here a week ... in a good way! We were in Solaris 1, and it was perfect. I loved always feeling like I was outside, because normally when on vacation I feel like I need to get out of the room. That was not the case here. We really appreciated the stocking of the fridge for breakfast, and had eggs both mornings. Also, the bread they supply is excellent. The beach chairs and towels were convenient for taking to the beach. Lying on the sun chairs on the deck looking up at the stars at night was amazing. We were also fortunate that nobody was checking in after us, and the woman at reception, whose name I forget, was very nice and let us check out a little bit later since out flight was in the afternoon. We definitely recommend staying here if you are in Vieques.…
Frankly, after reading positive reviews of Hix House we were quite disappointed. First, our reservation was botched: I had booked 6 months in advance but changed our dates by one week soon after original booking. This was never entered into their reservation system so our very nice front desk person, Alice, was not expecting us and had to scramble to rebook others to accommodate our original reservation in Solaris - one of only 2 apartments designed for 2 couples. She was extremely apologetic and helpful, by the way. But the problems persisted. We had no functioning lamps and the common room was very dark with inadequate reading light. We requested new lamps a number of times but they were never delivered. Then all of Solaris lost power one evening and it wasn’t restored until we’ll into the next day. Apparently this was due to a malfunction in the solar panels. Then it happened again the next night! Again Alice was profuse in her apologies ( she had been off duty when these power outages occurred) and appropriately reduced our room charges. If it weren’t for Alice and her kind and sincere efforts to make our stay comfortable, I would give Hix House a 1 star review. Alice, those extra stars belong to you. We appreciate you!…
This was the ideal place for us to spend our five days in Vieques. The architecture is unique and the vibe is relaxed and casual. One truly feels in touch with their surroundings here. What made it particularly well suited to us was the small kitchen space in our unit. By this part of our trip we had restaurant fatigue and so the ability to prepare simple meals was very appealing to us. The room has no glass or screens and doesn’t need them. Island breezes and a fan keep the room comfortable. Bugs were almost nonexistent and the romantic netting over the bed took care of the few non biting bugs around. Wild horses and lizards roam the grounds and birds and frogs provide a lively sound backdrop. Although I gave this place five stars, I do feel they could improve on things. 1) internet only available at the lobby area 2) housekeeping should be asked to wipe the walls around the kitchen sink and stove and to clean the remnants of bugs that did happen to get smashed against a wall. 3) someone should pick up the beer bottle embedded in the path from Rodondo parking to the lower level room 4) weeds growing between paving stones on the ground level rooms should be removed AND the plants invading the hedges/garden need removal 5) supplies for breakfast seemed to be an issue - poor selection of fruit at times 6) lobby staff was prepared to leave when we arrived after lunch despite lobby hours until 5pm. At times I found the computer screen was way more important to desk staff than the person standing there. 7) our room had no fruit and no complimentary night shirts on day one. 8) the bathroom light did not work day one and the ceiling fan had only one speed which was fast an left us a bit chilly at night. 9) earplugs are a must! Frogs are noisy at night and occasionally your neighbours have no idea what “indoor voice” is.…
Had a week in PR and decided to go here instead. Glad I did! It was a great experience. Rent a big wheel golf cart and enjoy the island! Hix is super cool. Set in the highlands of the island it is quiet and peaceful. Just a 5 min cart ride to Esperanza and many beaches. No AC and the night breeze is great. (Hot at night but got used to it and loved it). So many stars and different experience. Yoga class was great setting too. Pool is nice. Just a great overall experience. Especially if you dont like all inclusive type resorts. Just a tranquil experience and glad I did it.
During my trip to PR, I stayed in 4 different hotels, and Hix House was my absolute favorite. I stayed in Redondo and enjoyed the full kitchen, private patio surrounded by plants and trees, and the open air private shower. I don't usually spend much time in hotels when I travel, preferring to tour the place, but I found myself wanting to spend time just relaxing in the room. Loved it and plan to visit Vieques again and stay at Hix longer.
My family and I stayed here for two nights, and overall it was a wonderful experience. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The layout of the room was nice, as it was very spacious. The shower was also outdoors with a beautiful view. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Vieques.
We had a lovely relaxing time at HIH. Carmen at the front desk went out of her way to find us space at the last minute when a neighbouring hotel messed up our reservation. She could not have been kinder or more helpful. The rooms were beautiful and truly unique—a great opportunity to teach the kids about sustainable development and how structures can be cool and breezy even without air conditioning. Wish there were more places like this that offer an eco friendly stay without compromising style and comfort. The breakfast supplies in room and helpful suggestions for nearby dining were also really appreciated. Will definitely recommend Vieques and in particular Alix as a place to stay.
I would start by saying we never actually managed to visit Hix so if you're looking for a review of the stay itself, please skip! I booked a stay at Solaris 4 ($420/night) through Chase Rewards but received an email from Hix that unfortunately due to a system error, that room had already gotten booked. They offered me Redonda 3 ($325/night), which we were fine with, as long as we got refunded the difference in price/points. Alternatively, Solaris 3 (also $425/night) was available when I booked, so I asked if we could switch to that instead. The General Manager Edgard ignored both questions and just repeated that Solaris 4 was not available. I called up Chase to see what they could do, and they contacted Hix on my behalf. Hix insisted that the only option was to cancel the reservation (note that today is 3 days before we are scheduled to arrive). Turns out Solaris 3 was indeed still available but they inexplicably would not switch us to that same-priced room. They then went ahead and cancelled our reservation unilaterally, leaving us to scramble to find another place last-minute during a busy spring break. Unprofessional, shady and dishonest.…
I hardly know where to begin. Eduardo, the manager, and the assistant manager, Carmen, are just incredible-- thoughtful, friendly, accommodating, and professional. Over the years I have traveled a lot, and I have never encountered staff like this! We booked our vacation a week prior to arrival. The hotel was essentially fully booked, but some people canceled- so Edguardo worked his magic... and we were able to stay even though they had to juggle a lot and we had to move rooms... as a result we were able to experience 4 different rooms. The Solaris 3 was our favorite- stunning views and so nicely appointed. Our second favorite was the Triangular 3- a totally different vibe, and a little more set back, but still lovely. And finally, Redonda 3 + 4 were still amazing (with views over the pool), but we did not lay out of the room as much as the other rooms. All rooms have kitchenettes and they provide- eggs, olive oil, butter, bread, jam, salt + pepper, coffee + a French press, tea, sugar, fresh bread, pastries, and 2 types of juices as well as a water filter. This is actually particularly helpful as restaurants are not too nearby, so in a pinch it is great to have food at the ready. The overall vibe of the hotel is so serene. The architecture of the hotel somehow places a priority on being one with the natural surroundings. At night there are the vibrant stars overhead... and noises of crickets, owls, birds and other insects which lull you to sleep... as does the swish of the fan over head and the light breeze as it moves your bug netting to + fro over your bed. In the morning, depending on your room, you will be awakened by the sun rising... as well as the nature around you waking up- roosters, dogs, birds, the occasional whiny of a horse. I really can't wait to return. Muchas Gracias Edgardo y Carmen !!!!…
We stayed in the Triangular Matisse, and wow, what a place! If you're looking for peace, serenity, and rejuvenation, this is your spot. We woke up every morning to see the sun rise over the ocean right from our bed. There are multiple spots to lounge and chill in the suite, and the rooftop deck is INCREDIBLE. the staff was friendly and kind, especially the manager who helped us check in (thanks for going out in the rain to help us park our van, we really appreciated your extra effort and are sorry for getting you so wet!) The local bread was delicious, and they even kindly substituted the eggs for an abundance of fresh fruit (we are vegan and the fruit was a wonderful addition to breakfast!) This place is rustic, charming, and a one-of-a-kind experience that we are so glad to have had! Thanks to everyone at Hix Island House for making our stay so incredible!…
